Never thought about the P42DC
My last 6 months of engines service, I operated these techno-turds. I cursed every mile I went with that computer on wheels. I ran the "trash eights" out of LA until I went to zone 5 to finish my career running VRE commuter trains in and out of DC. It was sitting in a pill box or a bunker. Jan. 4, 2011 was my last run on train #95 to Richmond, VA. Turned it on the wye at Acca YD, then parked it at the Staples Mill Rd. station. I wanted to piss on the thing, but people were watching. My first run of my career was on a GG1 as a fireman on a passenger train, I ended it on another GE.
Was never a fan of the look of the P40 and P42, but at least a couple ought to be preserved -- they have lasted in revenue service longer than the famed F40PH (which I adored) and have been the "face" of Amtrak trains for a majority of Amtrak's existence.
Fingers crossed for the Genesis P32s and P42s to be rescued by preservation, commuter railroads, or small freight railroads that need any of them for Office Car Specials.
Although apparently no commuter rail operators have (yet) gotten any P42DC units, some got some of the very closely related P40DC units (ConnDoT/Shore Line East and New Jersey Transit), as well as the more distantly related P32AC-DM (Metro-North/ConnDoT).
