Here in the Netherlands you are allowed to park also against the driving direction/on the other side of the street when it is a street with 2 directions.

You`re assuming the Merc driver had a licence. Certain areas seem to have a "communal" licence, shared by everyone. The trouble with the van broken down in lane 1 is moving it. In that situation, I`d be tempted to hammer it on the starter to get it to the side. The trouble is, as usual, nobody will let him cross the slip.

*Some* cars will automatically put the lights on - at least the DRLs - when warming up. I know you can manually turn them off, but that assumes you're actually in the car - some cars (especially EVs) have apps which allow you to remotely turn on the HVAC; this tends to wake up the BCM (Body Control Module) which thus turns on the lights.

    • @lovrito2008

@@lovrito2008 You've either misunderstood or haven't properly read my comment. IF you have a car (e.g. an EV) that allows you to remote heat/cool the car, this will (in many cases) turn on the lights, at least the DRLs. I know this happens with my own MG4. And a lot of them are here on tourist visas, can't read or speak english at all, working on accounts that aren't theirs and the account owner takes a cut then pays them in cash/transfer to their international account. Needs a crackdown, and the illegal ebikes need cracking down on too. A few times I have seen stranded vehicles in a live lane and the majority of the time it is severe mechanical failure preventing the wheels from turning, locked / broken differential or seized drivetrain.
A few times it has been a simple flat tyre where someone refused to drive on it but we do need to give the benefit of doubt occasionally that it can't move. This one appears they tried to move as they are close to entering lane 1 and at an angle so I suspect that van isn't going anywhere until recovery can lift and shift or drag the van away 👍

When I was growing up in the 70's the Police didn't take kindly to Vehicles being parked on the side of the road at night facing oncoming traffic(especially unlit roads). Something to do with requiring headlights to pick up the reflection from red reflectors?

I have some sympathy with the wrong lane problem at London roundabouts - if they're not familiar, it can be hard to know early enough where you need to be, from a navigation perspective. And satnavs often direct you to the wrong lane.

The learner at 16.30 - I was going to disagree with you on a couple of points, firstly learners need to get experience of driving in all circumstances, so didn't really have an issue with them in the outside lane, they have to learn, then I also thought there could be a right turn ahead, so might be getting ready for that, being prepared. Then I saw them cut across the lane and thought that is exactly why we have p!ss poor drivers on the road if that's what the teachers are telling them is acceptable.

    They BLIND other drivers and
They DO NOT project a beam of light so drivers
cannot see a damn thing 500mm past the bonnet.
Old Halogen globes would project light FAR ahead even on Low beam and were practical.

The correct name for the cyclist is "FOD" = Future Organ Donor; if he survives the week, he should buy a lottery ticket, after that manoeuvre.
Ré the broken down van; I have had a situation where my fuel gage stuck and I didnt realise I was very low on fuel; when it finally unstuck itself and gave a low fuel warning - I made it all of 5 m before the engine cut out.
Bearing in mind, the reserve tank was HUUUGE and I normally drove another 60 miles with the empty light lit before refuelling (2.5 GALLONS from low fuel light to empty tank)

If it helps, I call bad drivers and motorcyclists the same - an acronym I picked up from the voluntary ambulance service that is widely used amongst emergency service personnel.
I correctly called FOD on a BMW driver dangerously overtaking on a blind corner a few years ago; sure enough, 15 minutes later I came across his lifeless body in the remains of his car - wedged under a HGV on another blind corner.

For those who say LDC is road raging, you should think about what road rage is, I once saw a man jump out of his car with a tyre iron in his greasy paw and start smacking a car with it. Why? because the car had tried to merge in turn but the idiot with the tyre iron didn't let it so the car beeped. The idiot got 6 months in prison and banned for 3 years, that's road rage, shouting at a stupid driver is letting off steam and frustration, it ain't rage!!

It would be prudent to cut drivers some slack around terminal 5, as that's where all the airport rental customers emerge, so there's an excess of drivers washing the windscreen instead of indicating, stalling at the roundabout because it's the first time in years they've driven with a manual gearbox, slowing down in order to read the complex overhead signs before going past, not staying in lane because they don't realize that the lines are largely imaginary, and trying to reset the controls from those of the deaf Icelandic midget who apparently last had the car. Then on the M25 they think they have a puncture, but it's only the road, and why is it so frighteningly congested?
Having said that, hire car drivers are as bad or worse than any others, with the exception of white van men, who are a breed apart.
