America: I’ll designate this new flamethrower as the M1.
Garand: …
Carbine: …
Thompson: ….
Bofors: …
Abrams: …
Even the m16 and m1911 share the name m1 lmao
Bofor Deez Nuts!
The "M~" means model in the name of the guns. The M1 Rifle (The formal name for the M1 garand) means it was the First rifle to be specifically manufactured for the military since the naming system was adopted. The "A~" that you might see means alteration and it means that it is an altered version of a previous design, but the alteration wasn't large enough to warrent a new model, but large enough to require distinctionp.
So that would mean
M1 Flamethrower is the First flamethrower to be designed by the military. (Its name isn't M1, it's M1 Flamethrower)
M1 Carbine is the first carbine designed for the military.
Now let's jump forward a bit to the M4A1 Carbine (This would mean Model 4 Alteration 1 Carbine). That name means it is somewhat substantially different from the M3, so it's Called the M4. However the M4A1 is a different gun from the M4 (You can tell from the A), but rather than being almost completely new design, it's an altered version of the M4. The difference off the top of my head is that it also has full auto instead of just burst and semi. So it gets called the M4A1 since besides that they are identical.
I know the naming scheme confuses the hell out of a lot of people so I hope that helped a little.

I must admit my first experience with a flamethrower in a video game was a memorable one. The year was 1998 and the game was Turok seeds of Evil.
