This band has meant more to me than any other over my 67 years on this earth...LG was a musical genius....the drugs didn't work.....still miss him.....
The rhythm guitarist had to remind mouth the lyrics to Lowell. It’s crazy that it’s a old gray whistle test and the band is that fucking good they were like we can do this.
*Huge* Little Feat fan here! My God was Lowell George ever a brilliant musician. The talent that man had could fill a stadium. We lost out on decades of great music with his untimely death. Long Distance Love has always been one of my favs of theirs along with All That You Dream and Roll Um Easy. This song in particular always gave me strong Van Morrison vibes.
I will never forget the day Lowell sang the lyrics from his solo album for me while the vocal free tape played on his Nakamichi deck in Nashville 1978. So great! He treated me and my entourage to third row center seats that night and for the next show in Memphis. A great talent
It’s amazing that Lowe can sing as well as he is in this video, considering the fact that he’s so high on cocaine and alcohol that he’s literally sweating bullets! Every year, my brother and his friends on Nantucket threw a “Little Feat” party on June 29th. It started out small, but over the years it grew to be a rather large affair. It was often held at Corky Lang’s house… and that eventually led to other rockstar luminaries finding themselves on Nantucket so they could go to the party. It was a wild time and included massive amounts of barbecue, seafood right off the boat, adult beverages/party favors, and a jam session that often went on into late Sunday afternoon the next day! It was the same weekend every year and during that unfortunate June in 1979, Mr. Lowell George took his leave from us and left his worldly concerns behind. Lowe died on Friday, and the next day the official name of the annual event was changed to: “The Lowe George Memorial concert”. True story! Sadly, Mr. George was really coming into his own with the release of “Thanks, I’ll Eat It Here” The song 20 Million Things is a miracle of songwriting narrative and music production. That is both exquisitely, complicated and very easy to listen to at the same time. In fact, that song is often taught in music schools and conservatories, because there is a plethora of wonderful examples of harmonic rhythm, bass line re-harmonization, New Orleans style, percussion, and drumming, and so forth.
Your comments are very interesting. I am familiar with these songs “Long Distance Love” and “20 Million Things” not only because of Lowell but because of the fact Jackson Browne, a really best friend to Lowell, thoroughly respecting his talent and choosing to cover those two songs recognizing how brilliant they were. He was Godfather to both Lowell’s daughter and the daughter of Warren Zevon, whom he also thought was a brilliant writer when no one else did. But that relationship a whole other story.
Eh, Paul McCartney was, as an overall musician. But he had WAY better control of his demons. I'll never understand why such a good-looking, talented and obviously not stupid guy would grant his demons full reign to destroy him. D'Angelo is still alive, thank god, but he's another good example.
The greatest band that ever rented the Earth. Jimmy Page had high praise for them too. Their first album reminded me of Sgt. Pepper, raw, brilliant and like nothing that came before or since.
top tier comfort video. i love everything about it. the creepy british guy at the beginning, the fact that they all look like they’re on another fucking planet, and the slow drawling version of this song, almost discordant but still groovy as fuck. soooooo good.
The British guy is 'Whispering' Bob Harris, the presenter of the music programme The Old Grey Whistle Test - he always spoke softly 😄 nice guy actually.
Im 66 myself and i wore out many 8 tracks of this album. Go to the bank and get a handful of matchbooks so we could wedge the tape up to get it to play!!!!😂
Damn, damn, damn, damn, damn. DAMN. The planets aligned when you guys did this song and this album. LOVE, love, love LF for all time. RIP Lowell, Richie, and Paul. Rock n Roll Heaven is rockin' for sure these days!
Of all things this song got me through airborne school. I was singing it in my head, to keep from thinking about jumping out of a perfectly good airplane
Students at the local college turned the classical radio station into an underground broadcast Friday nights at midnight. They played the just released Last Record Island I was was blown away. I'd never heard anything quite like it. Purchased the album when I got my next pay. Still have it & it remains one of my favorites. It still grieves me LG is gone. Imagine what how his genius would have developed over the years he missed.
What a great band they were! No other Band musically near them 2 other bands make the cut The Band and The, Allman. Bros, maybe the LATTER DAY Amazing Rythm Aces but it was, those vocals, N gdameat songwriting of Lowell George n Billy Payne that elevated the to the best Band ever! Melbourne Australia,
There's someone I know which captures these lyrics perfectly. Someone I have never met in person, but she keeps me fed with her mind, Heart and humor. However, knowing I will probably never meet her is still painful all the same. Glad Lowell and the boys all those years ago would be able to give me something to sing and sometimes cry to. RIP Lowell and Ritchie. #OneLove
“Hello Give me Missing Persons” They said: “what is it that you need?” I said, “whoa: I need her so” They said “you gotta stop your pleadin’ Cuz no matter what you do You can even pray to heaven above All you ever get from her is Long distance love” ❤️ I read the papers And I got the blues I’m so sad to hear the news: “Help Wanted” - but not enough... I guess these times are gettin rough ❤️ Her toes were so pretty And her lies so sweet I wonder: Do she know? Do she know she hurt me so? Cuz no matter what I do I can even pray to heaven above All I seem to get from her is Long distance love ❤️
I have loved this long since 78' when I first heard it. It still gives me solace and hope in equal measure, a sublime gem that stands tall against the ravages of time. We all have a bit of long distance love in us.
@Earl Guthrie Thanks so much. I saw this on TV in NZ at the time, spent the whole of the next day with it running thru my head. When the internet became a thing I looked for it, several times I found it but the links would break. Awesome to find this once more, now that video downloaders are a thing.
Great track. Lowell was feeling no pain in this croon session. He and Jackson Browne were good friends. Jackson has covered this song laid down on some of his early bootlegged gigs. Lowell's version, suffice to say, is outstanding.
It was summer of 1978, I was making a late night turn around run from Flagstaff to Santa Fe. I noticed my fuel light came on and I was out of gas. There were no gas stations for the next 27 miles. I had no extra fuel on board. I was doomed. If this shipment didn’t arrive on time my entire family would be killed. There was nothing I could do. Out of nowhere, the sweet sounds of Lowell George’s raspy voice came slowly oozing out of my speakers and filled the cabin of my rig. As I sang along with tears streaming down my face, thinking of my family and how I let them down, I looked at fuel and it started to rise. Thinking I was hallucinating, I became confused but kept singing. I started singing harder and harder along with the this song and just as the song ended…my fuel light shut back off. Miraculously I was able to drive long enough to get to the fuel station and complete the run. My family was saved. Thanks Lowell George.
becasue you were willing to be movin!!! good on - Tehachapi to Tonapah - driving the back roads so won't get weighed - well you know the rest of the story
ya but it was stoned on good smoke - and maybe some china with - but Lowell other than the sweat look pretty clear. I think his body just ran on the chemicals. they didn't effect him like others. But he got to heavy and did too much and the heart just stopped plus the dam cigs. I think that was the worst - was the cigarettes…
This must have been recorded after the first of two motorcycle accidents Richie had before it was put into his contract that he could NOT ride again! Richie's hospital bills - including his home address - were printed on the back of the Little Feat album, forcing he and his family to move. The 2nd accident happened in 1979. Richie was in the hospital, in traction, and was not able to participate in the Tribute to Lowell at the Forum in LA.
always thought lowell was a phenomenal muscian and fantastic slide player ,sometime its hard for me to tell his voice from van morison! RIP BROTHER YOU ARE MISSED TERRIBLY!

As a 19 year old, i listen to music from the 60's through the 90's primarily. Im a musician(guitar, drums, vocals) I remember the first time i heard the live waiting for columbus album. I was 7 and i fell in love with it just like the greatest hits lynyrd skynyrd album i had and many many more albums of all these great musicians. I hope one of you older heads could tell me why he had 2 mics...whats the reason?
One mic for the room and the other mic going to the film audio. There was probably another mic off camera picking up the ambient room sound for the film reel. This was a small rehearsal room at the Alley studios in Los Angeles.
Love Little Feat ❤ I saw them live with Lowell George in 78. Incredible concert. Lowell was phenominal. Bonnie Raitt was a huge fan of Lowell. There is a live radio broadcast made on Long Island in 1972. "Ultrasonic Studio" is the album name.. Bonnie Raitt, Lowell George, Freebo and John Hammond. Incredible album
I love this old grey whistle. The band is on a binge. The drummer has a black eye. The guitarist is talking Lowell through the lyrics. It’s not dis. They showed up and did great.
Could you imagine you and the boys are chilling , working out a jam and you get perfectly in line and your lead singer sings along so melodically and beautiful? By going off the sweat of the brow it almost seems like what happened on that colourful sun filled day
This band has meant more to me than any other over my 67 years on this earth...LG was a musical genius....the drugs didn't work.....still miss him.....
So is Bill Payne ... and no one drums like Richie did (sometimes, even he couldn't repeat the things he did)
me 3....
Yeah I cry when I hear this song, I guess it’s kinda a personal thing, and 1975 was a good year to be alive.🎃
Agreed, The most amazing band ever, very lucky to see them live a couple of times in London..
Likewise, three times in London, Lowell had it all, the songs, the slide and a voice that made angels smile
After almost 50 years, this tune still gives me shivers of delight. One of the most beautiful songs of lost love ever.
Never seen a band so stoned, reminds me of being in the crew bar on a Saturday night when I was at sea
The drummer had two black eyes. What happened last night?
The rhythm guitarist had to remind mouth the lyrics to Lowell. It’s crazy that it’s a old gray whistle test and the band is that fucking good they were like we can do this.
This is so beautiful! And I love that they all look high as a kite and the drummer has a black eye 😂
For sure haha
Richie Hayward was in a bad motorcycle accident around this time. Possibly why he has a black eye.
They were having a blast ! 🥳
Yeah the ultimate stoner band
Bonnie Raitt once said: I miss the Feat more than being 9 Years old… I‘ll go with that… (now 59).
She and Lowell were both big drinkers ending up in an argument with Bonnie hitting Lowell over the head with a bottle. So it is said.
