  • Dr Joanne Reed from the Garvan Institute explains her research into the underlying cause of autoimmune disease. Read more: www.garvan.org.au/research/co...
Hope is a radical program to understand autoimmune disease. Our researchers think there may be a common cause underlying type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. Existing treatments only suppress the symptoms: there are no cures as yet.

I was diagnosed with severe RA a couple of years ago out of the blue. First symptoms was liver inflammatory markers off the scale and undiagnoseable, next the incredible joint pain during the night like being beaten up with a cricket bat. Both joints left and right over much of the body which gave away the disease.
My life stopped unable to dress or carry out basic behaviour without assistants.
Big doses of Prednisone gave me immediate relief and MTX and plaquenil has put me into complete remission and the removal of steroids.
DMARDS have given me my life back and back to flat out at work again, so good. Bugger the snake oil treatments, theres no way im going back to hell pain.
So lucky to live in a time of medical history where people have such great science at their disposal.
Keep up your fantastic work good people.

rogue cells are CD4+ cells with self recognition TCR; There are 171 million different Clonotypes of TCRs in the blood in any given individual, only one of the 171 million need to be rouge to start clonal expansion which then will get better coverage on the human cells to detect further any similar patterns and mark them for destruction, so if first recognition in case of lupus happened in skin, then the next step with clonal expansion the kidneys are recognized by them for damage and then joints, CNS cells etc,....
