- A teenager in Britain has been cleared of cancer after a revolutionary new treatment for leukaemia. The treatment is called base editing, and involves genetically engineering a patient's DNA. Doctors have hailed its success as a breakthrough and say could be used to treat a wide range of other diseases.

Great story, I'm happy she is recovering.
There was a similar treatment done in NY a few months ago but targeted rectal cancer. They applied it to over a dozen patients, all of them had no signs of the cancer after the treatment and the tumors were gone.
There seem to be many breakthroughs but they are rarely covered by the media.
They covered it. But a lot of the media are more interested in the political circus.
@@inisipisTV Yeah, I seen it on CNN in a 2 minute segment and that's it. That along with this should have been headline news on all major networks. You are right about what they feel their priorities are.
Well, it's not available to the general public.. so it would be pretty grim to publicize it readily. People who are losing loved ones would go berserk to acquire this treatment etc etc. Who knows about the side effects. What if her unusual immune system allows other diseases to mutate into much worse shapes. I believe you shouldn't publicize it as a "cure" (you know that's how the headlines would look) until it's at least out of trials. And even then, it's only going to be used for the treatment resistant cancers and as a last resort.

@@98Zai I'm not sure what point your trying to make. I never said it should be "publicized as a cure". As for the side effects why don't you research them before coming here to imply they were negative?
I said there are breakthroughs happening and they don't get much media coverage. Media coverage brings in donations and greatly increases fund raising. It also raises interest and awareness on the subject causing more people to study it in school which creates more researchers and doctors. Biden recently had a big press conference talking about the steps he is having U.S government agencies take trying to cure many forms of cancer in the near future. That also got next to no press coverage.
You know what got a lot of press coverage? Experimental covid vaccines.
So pleased to see good news in a world filled with evil and suffering.

I don't think it can be understated how much value this forward thinking research has in degenerative disease. My mother has MS, volunteered for a trial at Mayo clinic and now is REGENERATING where before they would have at most hoped for stabilization. These kinds of studies save so many lives. It truly makes me be grateful to live at a time where I can witness the innovation of creative scientists and the tenacity of a child who reminds me SO much of other children I personally know who didn't make it to age 15 let alone come close to a cure.
I hope they can try this with Neuroblastoma someday. It has awful life expectancy and Shriner's won't take children with it.

Brave little girl. I’m so glad things worked out for her for now. I had a friend from NY here in Japan. He was diagnosed with the most aggressive form of leukemia when he was young. Then his leukemia went into remission magically. But it came back with vengeance after 20 years. I lost touch with him after his return to NY, and as I looked to get in touch with him, I learned that he died months after returning to the US. I was so saddened to learn he passed away so quickly and never had a chance to talk him again. Hopefully she can live normal healthy life but all the money he had and all the options he had available at his disposal, health is something you can’t buy with money.

Base editing is not a cure, but something more: it is a new area of medicine. Like surgery or vaccination.
There will be thousands of specific treatments in this area, and hundreds of currently incurable diseases can be cured this way. But it will take time, and for some diseases it won't help.
We need a world that glorifies scientific breakthroughs that affect humanity as a whole.
Newly discovered Cures, energy breakthroughs, space achievements, restoration breakthroughs and so on should be what makes headlines.
This is all great news and the scientists making the breakthrough should be recognised publicly.
Scientist and engineers are the people we should admire not pop stars 😊

@@billmoretz8718 thats good, im not sure what your point is though, the headline is gene therapy offers hope for untreatable cancers, and typically if theres another options patients aren't experimented on, especially in the case of a child. So i'm guessing even if you're correct T-cell treatment cures lukemia which i don't doubt there are all types of ways to go about it. It wasn't available or effective in this case, and many others, or Luekemia deaths wouldn't be a thing and this wouldn't be a story.
@@AstraI it may have not been tried here. Main point is that some treatments from breakthroughs in the past have had long-term side effects. Hopefully this doesn't. The more tools the better. Some people may not respond to this, but will others.

It has to go through cinical trials first meaning it has to be tested of a lot of people afther those treatments they have to wait a long time so i would guess around 25 years

Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children is part of the NHS = zero charge to the "normal person" in question. Scaling up is a separate matter which depends on how many cases this technique may be able to treat.

The 14 year old son of a friend had leukaemia. Luckily, they lived in the UK. This is what my friend said to me:
(1) Her son was treated immediately.
(2) They lived in Exeter but the centre of excellence for his type of cancer was in another city. So one of the parents would have to take the kid up to the hospital. The boy would be put up in the hospital and the parent accompanying the child would be given a place to stay next to the hospital. All of that was for free.
(3) There's a younger boy as well. So the entire family received counselling support - because it's tough for the whole family.
Her son is now in remission and studying medicine.
My friend told me that she's so grateful for the UK NHS. They NHS took care of all their financial worries and all they had to focus on what taking care of their Sons - the one with cancer and the one without.
Can the NHS be improved? Sure.
But does the NHS offer care for patients and their families. Yes.
