The Weird Gun Iceberg - Level 1

- Ever since humans realized they could stick rocks down a tube and blast it back out by lighting spicy dirt on fire, we’ve been trying to figure out better ways to do it. In this video, I want to look at some of the guns made over the centuries that had odd or unique designs and features to them, and in some cases, kept them from standing the test of time. A lot of these guns might look silly and weird in retrospect, but that’s also because many of the designs I'm going to look at were bold, innovative, and in many cases had never been done before or since.

@Wendigoon Thanks so much! hope you like it. I'd love to know what you think
Me coming to the comments to make a gun wendigoon joke:
Wendigoon in the comments: Ayy!
Wendogoon x angry video game nerd
the middle east version of a .50BMG or 20mm mounted on a truck it's a pipe with a bullet in it and a guy with a hammer and the first guy hits it and he's deaf for the rest of his life,so then the 2nd guy fires the 2nd round, and this repeats until all 6 people in the bed of the truck are deaf.

“Yeah but what if you had a 1911 chambered in .308?” Is a crazy statement
@@AaronHarver-dj4yq crazy that it was a real thing too
At this point, I'm convinced you could build an entire game with just 1911 derivatives... And if a full auto 1911 exists... that somehow wouldn't surprise me... There's so bloody many and some just straight up make you ask.... "WHY!?!?!"
The Thompson/Center Contender already existed.
@scottjs5207 look up baby face Nelson's custom .38 super 1911...
@@DarthBrandybuck .38 Super is a "hotrod" pistol caliber. .308 Winchester is a beefy rifle caliber.
One incredibly unique fact that I think you missed when talking about the FG42 was its dual mode operating system that I don't think has been done on any other (at least well-known) weapon.
If you were firing the gun on semi-auto, the gun fired in a closed bolt configuration for superior single shot accuracy. But when you switched it to full-auto, it would start shooting from an open bolt like a typical LMG. Very weird fact about it that is often forgotten about the weapon itself in my opinion.
@no-legjohnny3691 ah man I totally forgot to mention that! I absolutely read that in my research though. Good point
The Armalite AR100, CETME Model A, FN HAMR, Johnson LMG, LWRC IAR all fire from open and closed bolt like the FG42.

For anyone wondering about the VR game he's playing for showing off a lot of these, it's a game called Hotdogs, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades. It's a fantastic game with over 500 perfectly modeled firearms (and counting) and plenty of high-quality mods for weapons and maps. The hidden gem of this game is Take and Hold, a fantastic game mode that I have personally played literal HUNDREDS of hours of, it's endless fun. Plus there are tons of other game modes and plenty of sandbox levels. The devs are constantly adding new things, even 8 years after the game's original release. All this for only 20 bucks. BUY IT! (VR is required).
P.S this video was fantastic.
thanks! Take and Hold is fantastic. it took me far too long to learn how to spawn lock magazines 😂
Suggestion for your next parts: Groza and PSS pistols. Both were obscure Soviet assassination guns, using ammunition that traps the gas in the casing after a round is fired. This means that the gun is near perfectly silent and doesn't need a supressor. PSS is self loading and you'll hear the action cycle, but the Groza is scarily quiet.
Those are both on lower levels! I actually have some vr footage using the groza. How the h3vr devs got detailed access to something like that is the biggest mystery at all.
I took a shot every time you showed a bullet and now I missed half the video. 10/10 video!🎉
I am so sorry, hopefully it was cheap alcohol
Hey, if you haven't already completely planned all of the guns you will feature in this series, you should seriously consider featuring the "Obrez pistol". It's a strange modification some people did on Mosin Nagant Rifles, by removing the stock and cutting off most of the barrel.
great vid, can't wait for the rest of the series
I'm honestly surprised I haven't seen an iceberg video about firearms, let alone the odd ones. Very interesting, you earned a sub lol. Here's a suggestion if it wasn't included, check out the "Cripple Shotgun", I believe Forgotten Weapons has a video covering it
is that the one with the janky buttstock? that could be a good add!
The Sharps wasn't the "standard issue rifle" at the time, hell it wasn't even the standard issue breach loader (which were generally only given to calvary). The standard issue rifle was the muzzle loading 1861 Springfield rifle musket, loaded just like the brown bess from the revolutionary war only much, much more accurate. The closest thing to "standard issue" breach loader was the Spencer repeating rifle. The army standardized this as the standard issue calvary carbine after the war
@@Legitpenguins99 Sure, it wasn't the only rifle being used, but it saw heavier use than even the Spencer for a good chunk of the latter part of the Civil War, especially among cavalrymen
Love the use of H3VR footage, great way to showcase guns
Man that metal clinking sound had me tripping hard I thought something was in the room next to me.
📣📣SIXTEEN SHELLS FROM A THIRTY OUGHT SIX📣📣
I've never really understood the consept of a proggressive trigger for weapons intended for military use, because one of the big things that adrenaline does to you is it almost completely removes your fine motor functions, meaning unless you're extremely skilled, it's difficult to pop off single shots. That is unless I've understood the order of the firing modes copmletely wrong and pressing the trigger all the way down causes the gun to fire in semi auto.
nope, light press is semi, full press is auto. a wierd idea for sure
Thats why you train, train, train up to the point of failure.
So it becomes a drill, and in the muscle memory, so you dont lose your sh*t when it gets real
If these are only level 1, I'm hyped for the rest. Many of these would be level 3 of most non-enthusiasts lists, so I'm excited to see things I've never even heard of later on.
That and the accuracy and slick presentation definitely earned a sub and a comment for the algorithm
@DSlyde I appreciate it! there are definitely some wacko ones out there that I hadn't even heard of before I started researching for this project.
Me like G11 because i play Phantom Forces.

I wish StyLis Studios didn't add the AN-94 to Phantom Forces so early in the game's development so they could actually make it really good. Then again, they always could. Ah, too bad I've got other stuff to worry about, now.

@syko2164 that could be an entire video series on its own
@@DarthBrandybuck since Brandon hasn't been doing the Gun Meme Review lately, steal it. I love seeing new stuff covered by new gun guys.
My Dad had a gun shop when I was growing up and had an SAAS system with a 12" barrel in 7mm-08. It was one of the greatest hunting pistols I've ever seen in action. I really wish he wouldn't have gotten rid of it. It was a little hot on the hand, but after putting a muzzle brake on it, it really smoothed out. Really great woods pistol.

Cool video, very interesting.
I wonder if “Parlor pistols” deserve a spot on this list….. back in the old days people would have their little parlor pistols that were anemic enough that they would shoot them indoors!! In the parlor!! While having drinks and generally a good time! I know I’d love to just sit around, having a beer and like, plinking little gongs set up all around the place. People from back then straight did not give a F@$%!! Lmao
@quiggs8361 yes, I will absolutely be talking about the Flobert guns!
It's absolutely fascinating how many of these "failed gun models" are now the basis for lots of Nerf guns! 🤔
Most of the obscure, weird guns I knew about popped up in this first tier, so I'm pretty excited to see what absolute insanity comes later. Landstad 1900? AN-94? Calico maybe?
all three actually!

"A chain fire on a pepperbox is basically a Critical hit."

Gotta love the avant-garde novelty of some of these. Seems like some of them were almost onto something and just needed one more step to perfect.

I would argue that the gun-axe is less wierd than the rest considering their popularity with Czech, Polish, and (sometimes) German cavalry, as well as Scandinavian Marines for boarding actions.
its definitely the most common, but I wanted to make the gun+contact weapon concept all one thing instead of spending too much time on each example
31:00 you should look into the EAA Thor, where they took this even further and went "What if a 1911 could fire .45-70, .500S&W, or 7mm Remington Magnum?"

The Dardick is essentially an updated version of the Landstad revolver.
Non-german speakers trying to pronounce "Koch" never ceases to amuse me. The sound is difficult to explain too, since I have never heard of any equivalent sound in English - but as I just confirmed, the Hebrew " מגח " or "Magach" as one might have heard if somewhat familiar with tanks, comes pretty close, but is a bit too hard a sound to pass for native German pronunciation.
In fact, a friend of mine who's American and been studying the German language in his free time, tortured himself quite a bit trying to replicate that sound. The trick, in my humble opinion as a native speaker, is to try to get that mucus out of your throat, but in a noisy and half-assed way...
Your haircut and beard reminds me of custom faces we can "build" in MGS5 xD

You could maybe include the Pindad PS-01 in the iceberg. It was a rather faithful recreation of RoboCop's Auto 9 and fired a shortened 5.56 NATO cartridge. Didn't end up getting adopted but it was probably the closest case of any movie gun being accepted into official military service.

Hello, I'm taking some time to buckle up this video. May I ask you if you would consider one gun weird? Like the Beretta-Revelli (Beretta 1918)
@vittoriovaglio2031 that's an interesting one! the gun itself is a pretty standard semi auto, but the top loaded, gravity fed mag is definitely unconventional

At 30:11 you pull up an AR, am curious what brand optic that is and how you like it? I have a cheap Cvlife version from China on mine and it’s held up surprisingly well. I like the design and am curious if there are better out there. Great video
@AaronHarver-dj4yq it's a cheapo firefield I got with my employee discount at Academy. Definitely not the greatest out there, but for what I spent it's held up pretty well. Obviously can't compare it to a sig romeo or anything but it hits where I want to at fifty yards so I'm happy with it. My thinking was I didn't want to shell out big bucks for an optic I wasn't sure if I would like or not. I had only ever shot an AR with iron sights before so it was really just to test out the waters. I would definitely not expect it to hold zero on anything bigger than a 5.56, but I have heard a lot of people use these cheap red dots on pcc's and .22s to pretty good effect. I am going to upgrade to a 3x vortex when I have time to hit the range next.
