Great video! Only a few things that i’d like to quickly correct and add!: - Thriller 25 was released before Michael’s death and it was his last album of new material published while he was alive. - Starlight and She’s Trouble, while having been leaked, were leaked in awful quality. The releases on Thriller 40 sound amazing compared to the original leak quality. - Sunset Driver was actually recorded for Thriller. A common misconception is that the version of Sunset Driver we have now was for Off the Wall, when in reality the version for that remains unreleased. - Can’t Get Outta the Rain was the B-Side to the single for The Girl is Mine, and is just an overdubbed version of “Can’t Get Outta the Game” aka Part 2 of You Can’t Win - Got the Hots and Carousel were not leaked, but rather both were released on special editions of King of Pop and Thriller 25. Carousel however does have a version with a longer bridge and intro that is leaked. - Behind the Mask (as heard on Thriller 40) is not the final version of the song. Unfortunately, the estate of Michael Jackson does not have the rights to publish any songs produced by Quincy Jones, which is why no Quincy songs have been released post Michael’s death. The exceptions are She’s Trouble, Starlight, Slapstick, Nite Line, and Hot Street which they do have the rights to publish although they are Quincy produced tracks, aswell as Got the Hots, Carousel, and Sunset Driver. Basically because the estate doesn’t have the rights to these Quincy songs except for one’s that were previously slated for Thriller 2001 and 25, they can’t release any new material except for Michael’s home demos and what they have the rights to. Hope this clears some things up! But I loved the video! Great documentation on the mess that was this album 😂
Yeah once he said the passing of mj in 2008 after thriller 25...I swear I stopped watching. Was gonna comment & after reading this...thanks for saving my time!
- Heyy, you got that thriller 40 cover art i asked you to do?? - Su...sure thing, boss!! I'm adding the final touches! - Great! Remember, it's really important! ... -FUCKFUCKFUCKFUCK
Well, Sunset Driver at least is available for streaming since The Ultimate Collection isn't on Spotify. I discovered the track through the game MJ:The Experience. Got The Hots indeed ended up on some compilations. I discovered this track as a bonus track on The Dutch Collection from 2008. Hated it at first and haven't heard it for 13 years. But now I love it ❤️ Who Do You Know and Caroussel are aside from Sunset Driver my favorites.
I got my Thriller vinyl record for the first time ever along with my Thriller 40 CD. I was disappointed that they didn’t release the deluxe and expanded edition of Thriller such as the single edits, 12-inch singles, the demos of Beat It, Billie Jean, Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' and P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) and the instrumental songs from the Thriller era. Third eye and the fans was telling the truth after missed opportunities because of the estate. I don’t understand why they didn’t release the deluxe and expanded edition of Thriller just like 1999, Purple Rain and Sign o' the Times. I agree with you and the fans.
Nice comparison. The Prince estate is definetly doing an immaculate job when it comes to album reissues and deluxe editions. They're pretty much putting the MJ estate in shame.
nice talk, i was also disapointed about the unreleased tracklist, most of them appeared on the internet ages ago however, id have to disagree on your opinion of the toy, which is my favourite cut off this release, it features such jazzy arrangement that is akin to what a Stevie Wonder song would sound like, i didn't expect that honestly, as i always find best of joy from the 2010 Michael album sounds quite cliched (aside from the overly comercial production imho, it is just fact that the chords are also simplified, cutting most of the jazzy extensions/voicings from it, perhaps to make it reaches wider audiences, so it is more a matter of taste). So with that being said, this version of the toy is totally worth to be included, many fans love Michael for him being one of the pop music industry's greatests, but imho, there are also fans like me, who doesn't care much about dancing and performances, but rather love him for his music (to me what makes his sounds so unique is how he blended the jazzy structure of motown with the more modern sonic aspect).. Despite being a MJ fan who loves all his works, it is safe to say that, for my very own personal taste, im not usually a big fan of dancy music, and i barely enjoy anything hip hop, so acoustic cuts like the toy really is almost divine to me, as it captured the pure songwriting of MJ (id have to declare that i highly respect his production works, as MJ's music is often rely heavily on production) i do like the new cover too, but yes, while it looks great on physical copies, im not sure about the streaming stuff cheers
I agree on everything. Another edition for Thriller? Such a rip-off. I would prefered if they released a brand new album called "Thriller Live", in two editions 2CD and 2CD+DVD. The first CD would have all live performances of songs from "Thriller" either in the Jackson's Victory tour or Michael's solo tours, unplugged versions, award ceremonies etc. CD 2 would have the previously unreleased songs, plus brand new remixes of some of the legendary songs. DVD should have all the videos in 4K plus making of the videos and live performances in 4K and also the documentary about the album that changed the music industry. And ofcourse a double LP for the fans of the medium.
Oh wow, looks like someone's got their ideas even more straight than the estate xD if they read your comment they'd be surely in shame... Really interesting additions, thanks for sharing!
Wouldn’t really make sense to release performances from the bad tour as a thriller associated release. They don’t relate. Also you should know thriller and beat it are the only thriller videos we will get in 4k. Simply because billie Jean wasn’t shot on 32mm tape, it was shot on 16mm tape. It’s physically impossible to enhance 16mm footage to 4k sadly. However I understand what you mean. All I know is that BTS footage of beat it and thriller will be shown in the thriller 40 documentary. Also with as victory tour 4k footage.
Changes I'd make to Thriller 40: - Delay it by ten years; 50 years is a much better anniversary to celebrate than 40 years. - Reduce disc 2 to 9 tracks to keep consistency with the track listing of the original album. - Replace Can't Get Outta The Rain, Behind The Mask, & The Toy with Hot Street, Nite Line, & Someone In The Dark, respectively. By the way, just to correct you, even if I'd replace one of them, it's actually correct for (at least these versions of) Can't Get Outta The Rain & Sunset Driver to be on a Thriller reissue rather than an Off The Wall reissue. Yes, they were both originally meant for Off The Wall, but the versions featured on Thriller 40 are the 1982 recordings of these tracks.
Personally, I don’t mind Thriller 40 but I wish it was properly promoted, and I’m glad the logo was changed when it was released. But Third Eye said “goofy toilet paper” logo😂😂😂😂
We all know that anything put out by the estate is going to be a Half Baked job and this is no exception. I am happy to have these unreleased songs and good quality but there is so much more they could have done with this release. It is missing a bunch of other songs and has a few that are included that are not even from the era. Since they clearly were clenching at straws for the era they could have easily put Somebody's Watching Me on there. Also the two other Paul McCartney songs like the man and say say. They should have put both the opening and closing version of someone in the dark on there. Victory Tour Blu-ray with remastered short films. I don't think anyone would have complained if there was some video or music that is slightly after the Thriller era. If you look at what the prince estate has done with his album reissues and the unreleased tracks. I don't understand why Sony can't just hire a bunch of us fans to help out with these projects. I would do it for free and not care if I received any credit for it. I just want to see it done right.
i hope bad 40 is good when the time comes. there are alot of unreleased tracks for it and hopefully we get an hq version of the version of another part of me used in captain eo
Sunset Driver was recorded for Off The Wall and rejected. It was rerecorded for Thriller and rejected. The version on Thriller 40 is the 1982 version, so it does belong. The 1979 version never leaked.
@@thirdeye4470 “Sunset Driver” is a demo written by Michael Jackson. It was worked on during the sessions for Off the Wall and Thriller. The original 1978 demo was to be on the Off the Wall (Special Edition) in 2001, but was kept off at the last minute. “Sunset Driver” was finally released in 2004 as part of The Ultimate Collection, and again in 2022 on Thriller 40. Contrary to popular belief, the “Sunset Driver” released on The Ultimate Collection is not the 1978 demo, but a different version recorded in 1982 during the Thriller sessions. This is all over the net. I can't say it's facts, but just listen to the music. The synths the drum machine. Music didn't sound like that in 1978 and 1979.
THANK YOU ! from start to finish you have perfectly articulated all of my grievances with this album and the nightmare that is michael’s estate. t’s so frustrating that his life’s work has been left in the hands of people who rush releases and don’t care about quality in any regard. the artwork? a mess. the merch? appalling. the tracklist? beyond disappointing for all the reasons you stated, but i wasn’t really surprised considering their track record 😐
I personally liked it, especially the sound for some songs, it's a treat. But I admit I also expected more for an album like Thriller, the feeling that the project is unfinished, especially when we see what other artistic competitors do. In any case better than the Thriller 25 that we have already had that is worth saying.
Billie jean was shot on 16mm and then edited onto tape. The master of the music video is on tape. The only way to remaster it is by scanning the 16mm and re doing the effects again, which isn't hard at all since they are very very simple effects. Hopefully they still have the negatives somewhere
It's not the estate that has not done a good job with the anniversary reissues is who's ever running the estate has the key. It's like the car, you can't be mad at the vehicle itself for it to crash another car, it's the person that drives the car that lead to a car crash.
Of course. But by saying "The Michael Jackson" estate I am always referring to the ones who run it: his team and everyone involved in every Michael Jackson posthumous project or event.
tbh, in my opinion, the estate should have consulted with the family and the fans to make a combined decision on what would be great additions to the Thriller 40 release. And I agree with you: the album art previously released was a piece of shit. The estate did not properly think this through.
Actually, I kind of liked the Thriller 40 celebration. Sure, it could've been a better (ALOT better), but I think it was cool to have a celebration after basically nothing for the past few years. Plus, the celebration is not fully over because the Thriller 40 documentary has not come out yet from the time of this comment. With the announcement of the new biopic, I bet this is the beginning of a new era for Michael Jackson.
what i wanna know is why there an album of Thriller 40 anyway like we already heard of 'Off the wall 25" and 'Thriller 25" in the first place like we already heard these Michael Jackson unreleased songs anyway the album should never be exist IN THE FIRST PLACE AT ALL. PERIOD.
While I agree with most of your points I do have a few notes to make that i either personally disagree or have questions about. -Leaked doesn't mean released. Just because a track has been leaked for years doesn't mean it's an official release. You have to realize that michael has millions of fans and not everyone supports or keeps up with leaks so not everyone would've heard "Starlight" or "She's Trouble" plus their now in a mastered Quality. And to add this real quick, Starlight makes the absolute most sense to be on here. -Did you get "Who Do You Know" & "What Lovely Way To Go" confused, because "Who Do You Know" was never leaked? -It's a good thing that remixes weren't on this album. These are supposed to be the original tracks without being edited. Not something like Xscape or Michael. Overall i did like your video I just think these were the only things i had to note down. Also I think the estate is slowly trying to do more for us as fans, I mean they were dealing with legal issues but idk if that had anything to do with affecting this. Hopefully within the next few years we have many more new releases.
Hey there! Thank you for your comment, you have some very fair and good points. To answer quickly to your statements: I ofc know that leaked doesn't mean released, but my main complaints were that they had decided to release them and catalogue them as "new" material eventhough most fans had already heard them. The estate is well aware of this, yet let down (part of) the fandom by including these instead of never heard before material. A further complaint on this was that some of these songs were never even considered for thriller, so that adds to the disappointment. Apart from that, I don't recall having said that "Who do you know?" had already been leaked, but if I did then it was surely a mistake, because you're right, "Who do you know?" was brand new and totally unheard. I never said it was a bad thing that these songs were released as demos and not remixed! I actually am more in favour of that instead of the other option. What I did say is that, in cases were the demo is to thin, raw or unfinished, which is the case of "What a lovely way to go", the release of the demo is truly disrespectful in my opinion, as it clearly doesn't show Mike's best and is not comparable to his finished pieces, and that a remix in such cases is necessary to finish the song properly, which is what I believe any deceased artist would want to see with their posthumous music, it being finished and not unfinished when released.

Je suis d'accord avec vous ! Je trouve qu'ils ont fait n'importe quoi pour cet album !!!!!
Just to tell that thriller 25 came out in 2008 when Michael was alive and I do mostly agree with Thriller 40 album the only thing I like about the album was the demo of behind the mask and the PYT demo and that's it. To be honest I'm not a big fan of Michael older demo's from Off The Wall to Thriller and rather have a Dangerous, History and Invincible Anniversary album over a lazy Thriller 40 and I love how you call the new merch with the goofy toilet Logo. 🤣
Okay I am a hundred percent against blaming the estate for releasing songs that leaked already. Hell, if the estate didn't have to consider that, the album might have much more deserving tracks instead of things Sony tossed on in a desperate attempt to find something you guys haven't heard on RUclips.
It doesn't have to be a "desperate attempt", if they take their time on it it might end up as a decent record, not much worse than the material already leaked. I actually think that including tracks already leaked is much more of a "desperate attempt", as of trying to make as much profit from tracks everyone has heard already a million times.
@@thirdeye4470 If they just put Niteline and Hot Street and the like, people would have complained that the whole album is already available on RUclips. To stave off that criticism, they need finished songs from the Thriller era that people are unlikely to have heard. And no, they couldn't finish the songs themselves. Tons of fans complain when they do. Trying to live up to the "rarities" promise in the era of leaks is the only reason Can't Get Out of the Rain is anywhere near this album instead of things that would obviously be better.
I feel a few of these songs were done in the 70s , ok maybe re touched in the 80s and 90s but they should have been songs from the 81 / 82 sessions. They Toy is bland ( Best of Joy is 100 times better ) , Who do you know is very meh and the others have been online for over a decade some of them. A victory tour release would have been much better than this. No promotion. The estate have no clue and clearly have never listened nor will listen to the fans. Such a money grab and if MJ was still around he would have thought this was as tack af. Like he did with the pricing scandal over the Victory tour ( which was solved after he pretty much nearly refused to tour ) .
They didn't release Hot Street and Niteline because they have been all over RUclips. You can see them desperately fighting to find unleaked material. Why go with Can't Get Out of the Rain? It was a Thiller era B side and there's a chance not many people have heard it. Same rea The Toy and Behind the Mask are here. Sunset Driver too. What you are doing here is yelling at the estate for the fact that there are entire albums worth of leaked MJ songs on RUclips. Why did they risk including three songs on Michael that weren't him? Because if it worked they could turn the rest of the songs they had into an album no one has heard.
I swear that the toy, and who do you know are remastered and not the originals, tell me how they as demos sound better than the actual album that came out in 82-3 lol
Oh and the promotion issues and the like aren't a function of Sony but Wade Robson. As is reissuing Thriller and Bad, but not Dangerous and History. Thriller is popular and pre scandals.
So is Dangerous as well? And scandals behind, my issue with them reissuing Thriller is that it's already been done twice, both under Mike's supervision (aka better than what the estate did with this album)
@@thirdeye4470 And my point is between the BS scandal and all the leaks Sorry thinks releasing a popular album with little fanfare so they can quietly get paid is better than an all out effort with what is in their view a riskier project that might draw the ire of social media. You haven't noticed how mainstream music doesn't mention Michael unless they have to? How music streaming apps don't easily show him in the search results? There were very loud calls for deplatforming after Leaving Neverland. I was just saying that and the whole leaks thing explains the tracklist and the muted promotion.

Thanks for the comment. I recognised my own mistakes and corrected it in the video itself rather than changing the audio, but thanks anyways.
The Estate is lazy just throw something out.
I don't think so tbh, but they could be, who knows.
I like many.of the songs..But this looks like a money grab.
They should have waited until 50 years to do this
I don't think that would have made the project any better xD
@@thirdeye4470 yeah you right I heard most of the Demos they should have added some that nobody heard
The estate is not helping with these album not promotionno releasead singlr no advance music
So....is it just me, or does Beat It sound ALL WRONG on this release?!
I haven't really noticed any difference, but it might just be me if it's the case.
