I remember stumbling on this "biopic" one day on TV. It was a few years around the anniversary of his death, and seeing this, it makes you appreciate The Jacksons: American Dream movie so much more because this was awful.
Y'all did a fantastic job on this roast. It's definitely one of my favorites of this year, next to It's Pat & Leprechaun 3.
Yeah. American Dream hurt my feelings, too, though. I don’t why it’s so hard to do a decent Michael Movie. Maybe we need Steven Spielberg. He would make an EPIC Michael movie. He is an amazing storyteller, he can humanize any character, and he will make sure you are a sobbing mess when those credits roll. I’m not a big fan of white people telling Black stories, but everyone has failed so far, IMHO. Michael Jackson People! Call up Steven and see if he can do a movie with GOOD WIGS, special effects makeup, full dance numbers, a PROPER Diana Ross, a Janet Jackson who is actually part of the story, and breathtaking concert montage scene at the end, closing with “Man In The Mirror” with the ending credits…then…bonus footage of “Captain Eo”, and BTS footage.
Call…Steven… Spielberg!
tv guide played it constantly in the months following his death
@@TheErikaShow James Cameron would have did an excellent Michael Jackson film.. Steven Spielberg with a budget would do a great job..
The Jacksons: An American Dream is a CLASSIC miniseries. The ensemble cast was OUTSTANDING! Angela Bassett, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, Terrence Howard, Monica Calhoun, Vanessa Williams, Billy Dee Williams, Holly Robinson Peete, Jason Weaver and the late Wylie Draper who was PHENOMENAL as the King of Pop. ❤

I swear, I spat out my drink when I heard that🤣
Korey hit it right on the nail again. If you don't have the money to produce a biopic on such a legendary artist, DON'T DO IT. Even the Tupac film should've been treated how Spike Lee approached Malcom X.
At least that Tupac film had someone that actually LOOKED like the dude!
@@keijijohnson9754 Absolutely, but the film was underwhelming. The trailer conjured such anticipation.
@@keijijohnson9754sad thing is that's the only thing the movie has for itself
"Ray" set the standard for how a biopic is supposed to be.. The blueprint is right there..
@@kenrickkahn Heavily concur. I may even put Walk The Line in that category
I lost it at "powdered donut with a perm".
A good MJ biopic would need:
- An actor who could convincingly play normal and weird-looking Michael
-That actor also being an excellent dancer/singer (if you didn't go the lip-sync route)
-A script that wouldn't alienate either the "he's guilty" or "he's innocent" crowds
-The blessing of the Jacksons and whoever to use Michael's music, without having to turn the movie into a hagiography
It's basically impossible and not worth attempting.
bruno mars?
There is a Michael Jackson biopic in the works. Michael’s nephew Jafaar Jackson (Jermaine Jackson’s son) is portraying him.
There’s an eerily uncanny impersonator who’s in his early 20s. Creepy looking and can dance his ass off 👌🏽

The guy that played Michael Flex Alexander, his wife Shanice(of "I Like Your Smile") did a recent interview on QuestLove Supreme Podcast said that they told him after the audition that Michael is going to be involved and they'll use the real recordings. As soon as he got to the set, he find out the movie was going to be unauthorized and the make up was awful. Dude was excited to play Mike, the producers lied to him & made him sign the dotted line. 40:35--The American Dream/J5 miniseries version of this was unintentionally HILARIOUS!
The original footage of the incident had MJ dancing as if nothing's happened, all while his hair was on fire.
"Help! Help me please!" 😂
I rewatched it on Tubi and I laughed when he fell down the stairs. I couldn't help it, They filmed his fall like it was a pratfall.
That roll down the stairs--which would have broken his neck--was like something out of cartoon. Amazing, Michael Jackson is one of the most well-documented people in history (and that includes his own personal home movies) Yet, people STILL either get simple things wrong or aim for hyperbole. At this point I'm like--screw a biopic--just release every bit of footage from the time he was a baby to his last rehearsal and call it a day.
@CharliArmstrong frankly, I'm more open to a Janet movie myself, and have it feature just a little bit of MJ's life.
@@phillipwattsjr.4714 Ugh, I don’t even want it to be done to her. Look what was done to her brother with this monstrosity. Can you imagine what some joker would do with the Superbowl or the “secret baby” nonsense? I see biopics as something for historical figures who aren’t as heavily documented.
Edited to add: And even that has to be taken with a grain of salt. I enjoy the biopics on Bessie Smith and Josephine Baker and Frida Kahlo for what they are. But can I be certain of even a little historical accuracy outside of spelling their names right?
I was a teen watching this on VH1. Man, me & my family laughed & made jokes through the whole movie. Flex destroyed his career playing MJ in that terrible movie.
He got put back on with the TV show One on One
One on One started before this monstrosity of a movie. That show premiered in 2001. This bad movie was after that.
27:44 I lol’d when he said “evil temptress” lmao that was a good one. Tbh the way that you guys were all joking and adding fake dialogue to each scene was hilarious and reminds me of how me and my cousins have always joked about movies.
Holy hell, I totally forgot about this VH1 biopic 😆 MJ looked horrifying. That reminds me, I would love a DT review of the Black Dynamite episode where Michael Jackson is the villain. Billy & Martin's reactions would be priceless.
Soon as I saw the thumb nail I heard Billy’s laugh 😂😂😂😂
Glad I'm not the only one
Michael: She makes me feel like...
Bobby: A man.
Michael: No-- I can be me, little Michael.
"...that's what we DON'T WANT!!" 😂😂
Now this is one i didn't expect to get reviewed. 😂 I already know I'm about to be laughing like crazy. What's funny is when i rented this film when I was a child I thought I got an adult film by mistake. When flex was saying "Its Armageddon" during the 9/11 scene I couldn't stop laughing
And then Katherine Jackson saying afterwards: "It's the beginning of the eeeeend!"
You should do a bad movie roast for the Lifetime Aaliyah movie. It was absolutely horrible. Low budget and poorly acted and they also didn’t have her music rights for the film.
i second this
TLC one too
That one was horrendous
Hell, the girl that played Aaliyah didn't look or sound nothin like her either when she would sing in the movie. No hate towards the actress tho but they could've at least found someone that looks & sings like Aaliyah. I'm really hoping they come out wit a way better biopic wit the lead actress that not only sounds & dances like Aaliyah... But also looks like her.
@lenindominguez1986 And I'm really hoping that her brother makes an actual biopic cuz dat Lifetime one doesn't count. Like, you could tell they put zero effort into it. And both Timbaland & Missy Elliott better be a apart of it bcuz having those 2 involved would make it way better.
Diana Ross coming to Michael in a vision actually kinda reminds me of a brief scene in the Elvis movie where Mahalia Jackson more or less speaks to Elvis from beyond the grave. The difference is a.) it's sort of implied that Elvis is in a drug-induced stupor, and b.) it's a Baz Luhrmann film, so the film is over-the-top enough that you know not to take everything it says as absolute gospel.
American dream will always be the best biopic of michael Jackson .
The upcoming biopic looks promising.

The late Wylie Draper who played Michael Jackson (late teens/adult years) in "The Jacksons:An American Dream" (1992) was the best.
Jermaine Jackson's son, Jaafar in the upcoming biopic from Antoine Fuqua will definitely pull it off as his uncle Michael.
Flex Anderson going from Homeboys in Outer Space to One on One (dressed up as MJ on a Halloween episode) were cool moments in his career.
Playing MJ in this was all wrong.
They were trying to tell the stories of his life.
Somehow it didn't feel right and Flex admitting that it wasn't says a lot.
Thats because the Jacksons had a hands-on role in the making of the film. Michael personally picked Wylie to portray him in the movie.

Either way thats weird as around that time mj said he thinks people are trying to kill him. So thats prob why they had it in the movie
I remember watching this when it aired, around the time of the second trial. I was 14, didn't know shit about movie production and was still ASTOUNDED by how bad this was. As a fan who tried to absorb everything MJ, I blocked most of this movie out of my memory- but this brought it all back. I'm so mad Korey didn't show the cheap Neverland gate in the middle of the woods lmao... Flex tried, and I like him as an actor, but wow. The vibe of his portrayal of Michael was "big dumbass kid" and every time something bad happened, he was like "?????!!!!!". But it was 2004-5, I remember how the media portrayed Michael; even when they were positive it was still hurting his reputation.
At the end of the day this was just how y'all said: poor direction, no budget, etc. but also bad timing/luck because it essentially ended on a cliffhanger during one of the worst times of Michael's life. Here's to hoping the next few productions coming out do Michael some justice. Really looking forward to the one his nephew Jaafar is starring in.

Man, the idea of doing a Micheal Jackson biopic in the 90’s when he was still in his prime feels weird.
Edit: ah, so this was from 2004. My mistake
Well, this was done in 2004, when he was too busy with legal shit to do music and the majority of America was okay with treating him as a joke, regardless of whether they thought he was ultimately guilty. E! News once had a daily show of recreating the MJ trial transcripts because they couldn’t film in the courtroom, that's how big he was then.
Younger generations can know
I barely remember a 90s TV mini series, but it was about the Jackson's rise to fame. I remember it still focused a lot on Michael.

Shanice (Flex Alexander's wife) recently talked about _Man in the Mirror_ on Questlove Supreme podcast. She claimed that the movie Flex agreed to star in was very different than the movie which was filmed. For example, it was supposed to be "authorized" (produced with Michael's permission/blessing), and it would've had a bigger budget.
Apparently this movie was in heavy rotation on The Roots tour bus. 📼😸
I haven't seen it in years. It seemed like the first attempt to depict a less flattering side of Michael, with his flaws and missteps. Maybe that's why MJ's authorization was revoked (besides Michael having bigger concerns in 2004). 🤔
