The tension in this movie is so well done. This is one of Tony Scott’s best films
One of the most underrated movies of all time, imo, along with The Game. She has to watch that. Hackman is a GOAT, one of my top 3 fave actors of all time.
US Navy Trident C4 ballistic missile Vet here. I got to serve on these boats. Going underway is never easy. Luckily we never got over extended on our deployments. Each sub has 2 full crews, a Blue and a Gold. So ya go out for 70ish days at a time, then come back and sit in an office till ya have to go out again. "Boomers", the missile subs, are the greatest deployment ever. If you could be on the same boat for 5 years you could plan Christmas 5 years down the road. And you get a huge tax credit for only being in the country 6 months out of the year.
I am a fellow boomer submariner. I was going to say basically the same thing.
Lafayette SSBN 616 vet ,EWS/ELT out of Holy Loch. Amazed at tech advances since then.
@revo1336 my first boat Francis Scott Key SSBN 657 Gold crew. So glad I got Gold crew cause when I reported Gold was out, and in my introduction conference with the Blue COB, I found out he was my father's roommate in nuclear power school.
@tomdavis8524 I had to hard resist talking about riding down the missile compartment on the blankets when we did Angles and Dangles. Not to mention the fun ways we entertained ourselves. Throwing shipamtes rack in the freezer while they were on watch.
Fast attack boi here (USS New Hampshire SSN 778). I always envied you guys your set schedules. I liked my European port calls and being on mission, though.
Submarines once!
I love how this Hollywood blockbuster movie, for all its thrilling moments and performances, is essentially a play about clashing ideologies in a moment of great stress and fear.
I never thought of that! I could totally see this as a stage play. Wow, great insight!
One of the most underrated movies of all time imo.
Nicely put!
@@Pastor_DisasterRight?
Agreed there's barely any action scenes but this movie is 100 times more intense than the climax of Ant Man or Black Widow. I literally felt nothing when watching the climax of those movies, it's just a CGI splatter.
This one is just a banger. The cat and mouse game here is top tier. Tony Scott is horribly underrated.
True on all counts. Tony was more consistent than Ridley for my money.
I love this f@@king movie; I don't know why more people don't talk about this movie the same way they talk about Shawshank, Pulp Fiction, Braveheart, Goodfellas and other iconic movies from the 90s. Two amazing performances from Gene and Denzel. Tony Scott was on fire in the 80's and 90's.
9:16 missed the chance to call the Dog a "Subwoofer"
I did!
@@holddowna I must have missed that, I just remembered the subnautilus.
@@holddowna Internal Affairs1990 react
RIP Tony Scott. All time great military film. I can't believe you're watching this great movie. Was just talking to my nephew about how great this is.
Tony and his brother Ridley have made iconic movies. It was a gut punch when he took his own life.
On September 26, 1983 a Russian - Stanislav Petrov - prevented the outbreak of WWIII.
The full account was made in a 2014 documentary titled “The Man Who Saved the World”
A single human’s deductive reasoning saved us from being nothing more that a radio signal in the far off future, for some unknown civilization to pick up. It’s a stunner.
You have to remember, driving a ship or a sub like that is not like Han Solo piloting the falcon. They do exactly when the captain instructs to the degree. They make no choices whatsoever.
Love this gem both lead actors really crush it and supporting cast is all amazing as well.
This movie was inspired by a true event in 1962, when senior Soviet Naval Officer Vasily Arkhipov wouldn't agree with the other senior officers to launch a nuke at the U.S. navy, which was known as the Cuban Missile Crisis. An underrated but important man in world history
Which stresses me out even more. How many TFOAs have we had too? It’s crazy.
@@DopeSauceBenevolence At least one that involves a nuclear submarine that I know of
@@DopeSauceBenevolencemore than I suspect we want to know.
Wasn’t there one that fell off in Mexico?
You can't miss with Gene Hackman. One of the great actors of all time.
That incident wasn't known as the Cuban Missile Crisis it happened during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Which was a LOT bigger than just one Soviet submarine.
"We're here to preserve democracy, not to practice it." As a veteran of two different branches of the US military, I can confirm that fact.
6 Academy Awards for acting in that last scene - Jason Robards (the Admiral), Denzel, and Hackman all have 2 apiece.
R.I.P Jason Robards. I met him once at the U.S. Naval Academy. He was an amazingly talented and humble man.
Hans Zimmer wrote one of the most dramatic and suspenseful soundtracks ever, used in countless TV commercials, sports broadcasts, and movie trailers ever since. The theme music might be more famous than the movie itself.
I miss this Zimmer. He hasn't made a good score in a long while.
Das Boot (1981).
There I said it so you don't have to.
Shizer they all said it
The Command, a movie about the Kursk disaster.
@@redstarlegion7009 Well the Kursk disaster is more of a showcase of how badly the Russian government can screw up maintenance on their own submarines and torpedoes.
In order to complete the submarine trilogy.
6:30 I told my wife that if I ever got recalled to work and I hadn’t mentioned an exercise, to pack up and drive south.
He’s not trigger happy. He is following Standard Operating Procedure. He’s right, and so is Hunter.
I know I was editing and I was like u dummy - but that’s reactions
So it’s just following SOP to threaten to murder another member of the crew to coerce someone?
they're both right & wrong
At the time, Capt Ramsey (Hackman) was absolutely correct in his actions. Full authority rested with the sub commander, and he controlled the launch decisions. That’s why they made the comment at the beginning about the three most powerful men in the world. Shortly after this film came out, the system was reworked to remove the captain’s control, placing the launch decision in the hands of the president directly. I had two friends who were involved in developing the security and cryptography systems to allow that change. Fascinating stuff, but incredibly complex. Layers of safeguards and countermeasures to ensure against unauthorized launches, as you’d hope.
@@KevinThomas-ok2evExactly, but the Russians do it the other way. The get a constant radio signal from home base which means all is well. Should that signal ever stop, or get interuppted, for ANY reason, the order is to launch all missiles at their targets. Makes you hope they build good radios and have installed them correctly and there are no sunspots messing with communications.
Jason robards, old school Hollywood royalty! What a man!!
The thing I love the most about this movie is that the plot and story are fairly generic but it’s the storytelling, filmmaking and acting that really elevate this movie into something worthwhile. Tony Scott was unimpressed with the script when he signed on to direct, but saw the potential in it so he gave it to the writers of the previous two films he’d just directed Quentin Tarantino and Shane Black (True Romance and The Last Boy Scout) to punch up. And if you’re familiar with their writing styles you can pretty easily identify which scenes each of them put their stamp on.
I love the subtle ways the writers point to the ideological differences between the Captain and the XO. From the conversation about horses, to their opinions on the morality of bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki, even down the color of their skin points to these two men being completely diametrically opposite one another. Top tier story telling.
You can thank Quentin Tarantino for that last one being not so subtle. I found that whole conversation about whether the horses were black or white to be just... weird.
Great choice! The tension, dialogue and chemistry with Denzel and Gene was just magic in this.
One of my mom's favorite action movies. RIP.
The interplay between the two leads went above and beyond for a action movie of it's class. No right being this good. I still have it on DVD along side many great 90s action movies. It's one I regularly return to, to watch again and again over the years. A true gem
That pronunciation of Greenwich ("Green-witch") had me laughing so much
Good one, Ames! Yeah, rhis one is intense. A great movie with a great cast. Thanks for sharing it.
"Das Boot" is the most accurate and thrilling submarine movie.
Can’t wait to watch!
@@holddowna If you do try to watch the miniseries instead of the movie. The movie necessarily cuts out so much of the atmosphere to make a normal runtime, the miniseries is just superior.
Greatest submarine movie ever made. Perfectly captured the intense boredom, brutally Spartan conditions on a German U-Boat, along with the absolute terror of imminent death. Pertinent numbers there; during the war, 40,000 German sailors served on submarines. Of those, over 30,000 were killed in action. The single highest rate of loss of any military unit in history, including Japanese Kamikaze pilots. Great film.
@@holddowna You have to react to it!
This is one of my favorite movies of all time.
Mine too.I also served in the Navy, but,I was stationed on aircraft carriers. The BIG boys and back bone of the navy. GO-NAVY !!!
This movie is 70% Washington and Hackman chewing the scenery. And they're both great at it.
A young Quentin Tarantino did an uncredited rewrite of the script. You can hear his handiwork in the snappy conversations about the Lippinzaner stallions, the Silver Surfer comic book, and Kirk and Scottie in Star Trek.
One of my favorite submarine action thriller movies!
Nominated for 3 Oscars:
Best Film Editing
Best Sound Editing
Best Sound Mixing.
The first US submarine was the Turtle, during the Revolutionary War. It was a one man vessel and drill that failed to drill into a British ship. But it was the first!
The classic WWII sub movie "The Enemy Below" was one inspiration for the director of "The Wrath of Khan."
There are so many cool elements to the film and the making of the film - one which I love is that Jason Robards who plays the admiral in the last scene during the court of inquiry is a WWII veteran who was TORPEDOED on the USS Northampton in the Pacific - they had some real old salts involved in this film and it's friggin cool
Gene Hackman is my favorite actor of all time. Such a powerful, passionate and talented performer. I have never seen any other actor among the very most impressive for 5 generations who can replicate any character with flawless and perfect depiction, and his delivery is equally impressive. A highly underated, unrewarded by accolades actor who left Hollywood for its biased envious hiararchy of moguls and actors since Hackman wasn't a bow to the SAG and Film masters and only learned and mastered his craft with extraordinary talent being singularly one of a kind. I salute you Sir Hackman, king of the craft! I must add also that Denzel is an extraordinary actor that has impressed me again and again
This was a fantastic era for suspense thrillers!
The first R-rated movie I ever got to go see in the theater. I was probably a bit on the young side for it, but I still remember my Dad telling me we could go and getting to have a day at the movies with him. Plus the movie was a banger, so for all those reasons this movie holds a very special place for me. What a day.
Morgan Freeman told story about working with Gene Hackman in Unforgiven in that scene....you know that scene. He said "When Gene came up behind me and whispered in my ear "I'm gonna hurt you. And not gentle like before." I didn't have to act. I was legitimately scared because he's so intense." 😀
I remember Denzel saying that when he met Sidney Poitier, he told him that the first six films he makes will basically define his career, so choose wisely. Looking back on his career, I'd say he listened to that advice.
No one does pissed off like Gene Hackman! I saw this movie on the giant screen at the Cinerama Dome theater in Hollywood. What an experience that was! Great video!
I miss Gene in movies, and I wish Welcome to Mooseport wasn't his last movie but still an epic career.
@@BishopWalters12 I almost want to read his books.
I wonder if he has ever written one on being pissed off?
I would dearly love to see a reaction to "Mississippi Burning". Hackman at his finest, IMHO, and equaled by Dafoe, McDormand, Dourif, and Ermey. Even the minor roles, like Michael Rooker and Stephen Tobolowsky, are riveting.
This movie came out, just as I got out of the US Navy. I was visiting my folks, (both retired Navy), in Gadsden, Alabama. When Hackman did the speech in the rain, and he and COB shouted "Go Bama!", the whole theater roared out "ROLL TIDE!!".
"Crimson Tide" is also the nickname of the football team from the University of Alabama... Just in case no one else mentions it
and they have sex with their sisters.
Yes I saw that actually
They hook up with their sisters, right?
@@BishopWalters12 Always good to have one token bigot out there in the peanut gallery.
That's why the dog is named Bear. For legendary Alabama coach Paul "Bear" Bryant.
The music that was playing when the sub first went under the sea was Eternal Father, Strong to Save. It was written by an Englishmen, but both the US and British Navies have adopted the hymn (as well a few others, if memory serves.)
It's also known as "The Navy Hymn"
@@RabidTribble Correct!!! 🤘🏼
I was in the eighth grade during the Cuban Missile Crisis. To say that it was very scary is a HUGE understatement
Man Viggo mortenson in another classic. He the perfect slow buiild up to get him ready for his peak.
Viggo in "The Green Book" was amazing. Phenomenal movie. Plz watch it if you haven't already.
Viggo takes a lot of great little roles in the 90s that would propel him to his era of leading man movies in the 00s and 10s. My fave is his appearance as Satan in The Prophecy.
@@LordVolkovViggo in the Prophecy is just so perfect
This is the kind of movie where the leads just the best in each other.
This cast is bananas. They could have performed this as a stage play and it would have been incredible.
Crimson Tide is fun. Quentin Tarantino helped uncredited write a bit of it. He wrote the line about "silver surfer".
Also the Lipizzaner bit.
DEFCON-1 is nuclear war; DEFCON-5 is peacetime. So DEFCON-4 is a slightly higher state of readiness. Going to DEFCON-3 is when the worrying starts.
I love how Quentin Tarantino did an uncredited script punch up. You can totally tell the Silver Surfer, Star Trek, and horse color bits were all his. RIP to the legend Tony Scott
My stepdad was an E9 and after 20 years in the Navy left because he married my mom. He was very by the book and was a voracious reader. He, I believe would have stood with the EX until the transmission was 100% completed.
Denzel was the XO (Executive Officer - 2nd in command) not the EX.
I have no idea what an EX is on a U.S. Naval warship is.
And yes, I was in the Navy for 11 years. I know what the XO is.
We are slowly heading for Das Boot :D
With stop aboard the USS Dallas along the way.
In all my years of film watching i have yet to see anyone make a movie involving the submarine as good as Das Boot. It is the gold standard.
Thank you for doing this reaction. It's a bottle movie (all action happening on a ship) and it is a relentless, smart, character-driven thriller. I miss movies that deal in ideas this seriously. Nowadays, we get "hero of destiny" retreads. I prefer heroism based on deeds and real choices. Your channel is fantastic, keep up the amazing work!
The COB.. ..that means Chief of the Boat. Senior enlisted man on the boat.
I forgot that Aragorn was in this movie! :) "Go Bama!" heck yes!!! I got my B.S. from UA in Huntsville, and have visited the battleship USS Alabama in Mobile bay, so those references make my feelings very feeler-y. But also deep emotions about the role of prejudice and slavery in building the south. This movie deserves to be seen more today...
Love it; a reactor who knows her dogs!
Tony Scott's film style really suits this movie well. Lots of close up shots and fast back and forth scene swaps really adds to the building pressure and anxiety of the whole situation. Definitely one of his best films with an incredible cast.
Nice. One of the all time greats.
One doesn't question a narcissist. We have lately been experiencing this. You understand better the end result of that.
The Captain isn't an evil, or bloodthirsty man. He does not WANT to launch the missiles. The fact is that he has been given legal orders to do it, and he believes that orders are given for a reason. It does not matter if he understands why, or if he agrees. He does not have the full picture. Threatening his crew with lethal violence is not unhinged - their inaction is potentially going to cost millions of lives.
To a large extent, obeying orders is about faith - individual leaders can be stupid or wrong, but overall those in position to give orders have demonstrated that they have aptitude for command and understanding of the consequences of giving orders. If the subordinates ever lose faith, chaos ensues.
Fundamentally the Captain is a believer, and Hunter is a doubter - not yet a heretic but unwilling to take actions with such high stakes, without verifying for himself.
Soldiers are trained to obbey orders without question. A Good solider carries out orders without questions, but some of the worst attrocities in history occured because "good soldiers" carried out orders without questions.
It is overrall a difficult moral dilema that this movie tackless flawlessly, at least in my opinion.
Hello Ames!😊 This and "The Hunt for Red October" are my favorite submarine films. This one is definitely closer to reality than Red October. Although, Gene Hackman's character did insult the Air Force at the beginning of the film.😉 Great reactions to this tense submarine thriller, Ames!!!!🎬👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I have this wierd relationship with this movie. I think The Hunt for Red October is the better submarine story, but the acting of Denzel and Hackman is the absolute best.
I had a work buddy who served in the Submarine Corps, U.S. Navy. Part of his job involved target selection if the call ever came. He had some really funny stories.
In his own words: "The entire purpose of a nuclear submarine is to go somewhere, lay low, and be scary."
YES YES YES you absolutely need to watch the Sopranos. 🤞🤞🤞🤞
If you wanna ride a horse, start with a morgan. They're sweet, gentle, and easy to handle. I love them. They're beautiful.
19:25 -- RE: "It would be hot down there."; A: Depending on a lot of factors, it *might* manage to get hot but Fun Fact! submarines (starting in World War 2) were among the first ships of the U.S. Navy to have proper air conditioning plus freezer refrigeration on board, because the only thing keeping the air "Hot" is the inside cabin pressure and carbon dioxide. The outside water temperature tends to cool down everything inside the submarine over time, until finally the air starts to lose its moisture to condensation. So, to keep the ship properly dehumidified and thus pleasant air conditioning via heat exchange is used, and since this sucker is nuclear, there's lots of power for it.
With all that being said, "Silent Running" is the mode of operation where a submarine turns off any and all equipment which would be noisy enough for another submarine to potentially hear it using hydrophones, also known as passive sonar. If rigged for silent running it is possible that the inside might get more uncomfortable but the air exchangers probably won't be as noisy as the high pressure steam being used for electrical generation.
Now that you've watched The Hunt for Red October and Crimson Tide, Das Boot the German film must be on the list.
The submarine trilogy.
“…Shooting a miss-I’ll of nucular power” 13:43 your little pronunciation idiosyncrasies are so endearing! Peace, from New Mexico ✌️
What an incredible movie. so intense and great acting.
What's amazing about the story, that I think nobody ever talks about, is... they actually sent orders to launch nuclear freakin' missiles and then changed their mind.
Love that you reacted to this. One of my all time favs
One of my favorite movies - great reaction!
I loved this movie despite its inaccuracies about CO/XO dynamics and EAM protocols. I was on SSBN 731 and it was cool seeing my old job of running gas generator keys from the CO to the tubes!
How do the CO/XO dynamics work on a sub ???? And what're the EAM protocols on a sub ???
You have a very authentic reaction. You seem like you're a sincere person. A very good friend and loving family member. Thanks for sharing your reactions
I remember being told when I was in the Navy that my job was to defend the Constitution, but it didn't apply to me.
"Going down, Going deep"
I think i have seen that movie...
I was a Marine, but a friend of mine was a Submariner who hates this film, basically saying the chain of command could never break down like its shown here. it's unlikely a guy with Capt. Ramsey's personality would be in command of a SSBN or any sub for that matter. The missile drill while there is a fire aboard would be a courts martial for hazarding his command, he would have been relieved by the XO on the spot. Later it does get a little more complicated but in the end Ramsey would have been free and clear to launch his missiles since he had valid orders in hand, but he would also never be in command authority again because of the other surrounding circumstances. Sure orders are expected to be followed, but not blindly which is why commanding officers are also expected to exercise discretion and good judgment if the order they have been given no longer seem to fit the evolving situation. I was once in a situation where I did not follow a direct order and the officer tried to bring me up on charges, but the Company Commander heard us both out, looked at the officer and basically said "this will be an embarrassment to you if you move forward with charges, it sound like the corporal made a good decision and acted correctly".
One of my favourite films of the 90's. Straightforward premise, two great leads and tight direction. Just nail-biting film-making.
one of the best warfare movies out there.
First time watching one of your reactions. You are fantastic! Very organic, great lady cave in the background, funny, and absolutely gorgeous.
I love this movie. Its up there in my top 10 favourite movies of all time.
It’s really sad they don’t build new legendary Hollywood stars anymore. Will we ever see another Hackman? Eastwood? Brando?
I fear not.
They also use glycerin which they spray on the skin to look sweaty. It doesn’t impact the makeup like Vaseline and water does. I am do a special kind of makeup called Moulage it is SFX makeup to create realistic injuries.
Me stressing out over that last note that whoever is President has that much power.
One of my top 5 movies all time
What I love about this movie is that neither man is particularly wrong about anything. It just depends on your viewpoint.
DEFCON 4 is mostly harmless, it's one of the two Peacetime DEFCONs.
The guy in Launch Control that the captain threatened to shoot, Petty Officer Hilaire, was played by Scott “Don Malarkey” Grimes
Amy, if you like Tony Scott, Hans Zimmer and James Gandolfini, then you must see "True Romance".
Written by Tarantino, it also has Patricia Arquette, Christian Slater, Samuel L.Jackson, Brad Pitt, Gary Oldman, Christoper Walken, Val Kilmer, Tom Sizemore, Dennis Hopper, Chris Penn and more!
And once again, another banger of a soundtrack from Hans Zimmer
Hi Ames!! What a great reaction and edit! I think you'd make a totally fly missile sub driver. On the subject of the word "Greenwich" (for next time you encounter it, which you're going to), this is one of those words invented by the English, and they in their wisdom like to say it "Grennitch". 😆. As a fellow North American, i like finding better ways to say words, but this is one people might get ruffled about. Have a great rest of week, ✌🏼
More: Greenwich, England is the location of the worldwide time standard. When you tell a computer or device your time zone, things like GMT+3 mean Greenwich Mean Time plus 3 hours. Zulu is a military shorthand.
At the end when Captain Ramsey said mr. Hunter has the Con it means Hunter has Control of the Ship he's not giving up being Captain
My first experience with your channel. Loved your reaction to one of my favorite movies. Subbed! Thank you for sharing!

Great movie idea and I agree totally with you on both actors!!!
Love this movie!! Great reaction as always. And that quick comment about wanting to watch The Sopranos? - YES PLEASE. If you do, pls make it a reaction series
Love submarine movies! My favorite is Das Boot from 1981
As a Navy vet - I love this movie - we had a few moments where flag officers disagreed - we had procedures in place that resolved these issues immediately - but what if… I love it.
The attitudes, dialogue, characters are pretty well done - they must have had some killer Navy advisors for the film.
The only issue I have is the one officer shouting at the enlisted guy - good officers take care of their enlisted - the people that make you look good.
Out in the fleet, if an officer yelled ‘give me 20 pushups’! I’d have told him to ‘F off’
Yeah you tell that officer to f off if you don't like your current rank. That is easily article 15 material at the very least.
@@Stubbies2003 article 15? What were you Army?
Captains mast - 6 times in 6 years on my boat. It was always the ensigns- one was a guy that wanted to be saluted when we were underway - after the 3rd sailor told him to F off he found out we don’t salute underway on our boat. Haha
Course I was in during the 80s - officers earned the respect of the enlisted - it wasn’t a requirement
Cary grant also star in black and white submarine movie "run silent , run deep". Also that movie "the enemy below" also a good movie.
Cary Grant was also in Operation Petticoat, another sub movie.
Cool I love him I just watched arsenic and old lace!
I think that the Cary Grant submarine movie you're thinking about is "Destination Tokyo" (1943). He was not in "Run Silent, Run Deep." That 1958 film starred Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster.
Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster. Along with a very young Don Rickles. Another great sub movie, but involving a very different time in submarine technology. If you ever visit Cleveland, stop by and tour the USS Cod. it’s a Gato class sub, still in its original WWII configuration. This was the same type of boat seen in “Run Silent, Run Deep.” Great movie.
