melon how dare you not even mention ‘sexy villain’, which has already garnered over 1M views on its official music video, basically as the lead single of the record. such fresh vocal harmonies & killer production, throughout the whole album really. it’s a strong 8 for me
I don't get why Sexy Villain is such a standaout for so many. I like the song, but I like like all the other songs on the album more. The other songs are more catchy, more interesting and more groovy at the same time.
I hate when he decides to just completely not acknowledge certain songs on the album. I know he's trying to make short-ish form videos but it's as simple as saying "I didn't think X track was all that special but i enjoyed it/ i didn't like it" part of the reason I watch these album reviews is for me to see different perspectives on my favorite songs. I really like Buzz me In and wanted to know what he thought about the production on that track. guess I'll never know.
I gotta give it another listen or two, but yeah, I think this might be my AotY as well. Just so zany and creative. Every song has something interesting going on. Loving wyd, Grumpy Old Man, and Front Tooth in particular.
This has to be one of the most euphoric albums i've heard this year and tbh it's really gonna be not only a part of my year end list but become a big part of my life as well, the way she manages to sound unique in all the tracks and how some she hides some really clever lyrical moments in each song makes it so much fun to always go back and noticed something you missed before. She really is one of the best new artist in recent memory and i'm so happy she's getting the respect she deserves.
i dont blame u for forgetting sexy villain cuz of how busy u are, but that’s one of the best songs to me despite how straight forward it was. the loud guitar for the bridge was a bit much but still a great listen
Remi Wolf is just full of style! I found this album to be just a ton of fun with some really cool and fresh production. Cannot wait to see what Remi does next! :)
It's probably been said to death in these comments already, but I love that Remi is able to unapolagetically do weird shit on this album. Liz is probably my favourite track on the album but who else would do that ending bit of Quiet on Set? Also I've heard the 5 Guys bar 50 times now and it still hasn't gotten old.
It's a 10 for me. Only a few miniscule critiques. Although I would say it's a little on the shorter side, I think it's practically perfect and it's explosivity, character, and uniqueness is something to be desired for in more music.
Out of curiosity, how much criticism do you feel you can lodge at an album and still give it a 10? I personally consider a 10 to be perfect, so with me for instance I’d give Bandana by Freddie Gibbs and Madlib a 10, but there’s one line i really dislike that keeps it from being a perfect album for me so i give it like a 9.9
@@abrahamjoyal376 TL;DR: Essentially, a 10 for me is an album that gets above a 95 on my scale PLUS my personal stamp (with some community influence) of masterpiece. This album's dropped to a flat 95 because I do agree that it's not as perfect as I'd originally rated it. Long, in depth comment :): A 10 for me is probably different from most. I rate albums using a weighted average of the ratings I give in 3 distinct categories (horrible, great, personal rate). I won't go in depth into how that's calculated, but the point of it is to balance personal enjoyment with the objective quality of the music (production/mixing/etc.). It seems a little more complicated than it is - it's a simple 5 line code of Python. The one possible downside to this average is that songs that are meh or are decent become kind of irrelevant to the final score I give a project (although I made it that way purposefully lol).
@@abrahamjoyal376 I think this album has it all and has zero skips so I'd agree with a 5/5, honestly. Unironically, I'd say it's as enjoyable to listen to back to front as TPAB and any 10 Anthony has personally given
This is my favorite album this year. I don't *totally* understand the 7 since you loved all the singles and said you liked both Volkiano and wyd, which leaves like 4 tracks, but I will let it slide... Anyway everyone should listen to this, the singles are bangers, the deep cuts are bangers, 7 does not mean bad :)
Between this and Gorillaz Song Machine, I feel like his perception gets thrown off when he hears a large amount of great tracks in advance of an albums release.
I mean 7 is pretty positive. Sadly most people have school trauma and associate 6/10 with failing or not doing great. 6/10 means he liked it more than most music out. 7 is damn enjoyable if you ask me
@@JELL0521 I know a 7 is still good, don't get me wrong. I'm not angry at the score or anything, but he talked about the album so much before it came out and enjoyed all of them enough to praise each one of them individually... and then it ended up with a 7 when those songs are all almost back to back. I think the difference between a strong 7 and a light 8 is marginal but I would have given it to her personally.
Okay I know that you interviewed her but complaining for 6 minutes about why Anthony Kiedis is her favorite Anthony and then begging her to change the title of the song to Anthony Fantano wasn't right and can't be called a review, melon!
I liked this record a lot. It reminded me of how I felt listening to Amine's Good for You: it's light, it's fun, it's got some introspective moments, it goes a little too over the top sometimes, but it just puts a smile on my face. Good album. Edit: It's quickly become one of my favorites this year. Every song is infectious.
Street you live on is one of my favorite songs of the year, great melody, sticky hook, and perfect closer. Definently see where the vocal manipulation critique is coming from, but with Remi everything is so out of left field that it just works.
I really enjoyed "Buttermilk". I felt like it didn't have a strong sense of progression because that shitty relationship she describes was cyclical. The nature of it all could not progress, and when tries to towards the end (with the screams in between lyrics) to do something different, it ends in almost the same cadence that the song began in. It's not satisfying, but it gets the point across. It just strikes me as a track that'll resonate with anyone stuck in a cycle and VERY aware of it. Tho at the same time, if that track was any longer than 2ish minutes, it might have had the opposite effect. Other than that, I really gravitated towards Front Tooth, Liquor Store, Anthony Kiedis, and Sexy Villain. She is such a dope artist. I haven't been this excited about someone in a minute.
Buttermilk grew a lot on me, it reminds me of something Secos & Molhados would have done, but angrier. Cannot not love it, Remi is an universe, hope she continues surprising.
I knew Sally was going on the least favorites with some of the audio parts, personally grew on me a little bit but on a first listen I was put off a little. Standouts for me were Liquor Store, Volkiano (which surprisingly started out as a least favorite until a couple of listens later), Front Tooth, and Grumpy Old Man. Least favorites were probably Guerilla and Sally with how abrupt they both felt but they were both still good tracks. 7 is honestly a good score for her debut album, I would've given it around an 8 in my opinion.
The fact that they took some production decisions that may appear "too much" is the Nr 1 reason why this is such a great album. You can hear funk, rnb, rock but none of the tracks are produced like those genres. Using autotune where it's not "suposed" to be used or cranking the fuzz on the guitars where everyone expected a clean tone. That's what music production is all about!!
THIS VIDEO I LOVE THIS VIDEO ive been listening to remi wolf since like what, 2020, 2021, my first song of hers was photo id which i came across when i was watching netflix Grand Army. had to listen to the whole song, got to the last minute or so of pure crazy autotune thing, got weirded out, but then i just fell in love with her fucking music. like oh my god i love her songs and nobody around me knows her. I love that this was on fantano's radar. I had been anticipating this album for quite some time and was a little disappointed that many of the songs had already been released, but I think she possesses that off center brilliance of Beck, BrockHampton with an impressive vocal capability. I also think it's so fitting she is a reject from American Idol. She's a straight up Goonie and never said die.
i mean, the review's alright. I didn't think howling like a madman because her last name was "Wolf" for a good 2/3rds of the video was that necessary, but hey, you do you.
Glad it wasn't just me that felt like the vocals on the tail end of the album got a bit harsh. I didn't know if I was just getting tired or if it was actually different
