The jump from the first to the second one was enormous, after that it's really incremental steps but it certainly does sound reaaaal pretty near the end.
You only can compair pianos if they are tuned and intonated by the same person. The Baldwin is just miserably tuned, without saying that it ever will sound like the Altenburg. I like the Altenburg, not this rich as a Bechstein or Steinway, but to pay for this difference 50 times as much or even more ?
@@fmcom.stettler9742 The Baldwin was actually tuned as good as is possible, it wasn't too badly in tune, but pianos as old cheap and used as this is can't be perfectly tuned to begin with. But a lot of what you are thinking is an out of tune piano is tinniness. The piano is shot and no amount of tuning can help it.
The big jump happens between the wood frame and the steel frame. I grew up with a cheap spinet and only played when my mother made me do it. Then a few decades later my mother bought a Steinway and as soon as I touched it, I thought, if I'd had this growing up, I would have played voluntarily and become a pianist! I used to visit just to play the Steinway. In the video, the last piano was the most expensive but I don't think there were any concert grands in the list. The sound quality is not exactly proportional to price.
I guess the real question is, how do they feel to the player. Since the 2nd one and the last one sound about the same, does it feel 1000x better to play?
Me watching this with on my iPhone without headphones and the tv playing in the background: 🧐 ahh yes, a subtle difference but quite notable to the trained ear
Wasn't something a bit off with the tempo of the third mvt of the moonlight sonata, by the way ? Or is it because I'm used to hear another interpretation ? Or my ears are garbage.
To anyone thinking this is crazy they let him play on these pricy pianos, *an instrument is meant to be played.* its one of the most basic rules of music, don’t let it just sit somewhere and gather dust. Its for making music, not just looking pretty.
Unfortunately mine is playing by itself. I was too poor to afford piano lessons as a kid, I got the automatic playing type, because I still enjoy listening to a good piano. Thank you God.
That was a very, very misleading information (and I'm pretty sure you know that). You can't buy half of Venezuela for that. Not even somewhere close to that amount of land. You could certainly buy a pretty big farm for that value, but the relative value of one currency if compared to the dollar is nothing more than "relative". Considering Venezuela's super devalued currency, you would face three problems: 1. Nobody would sell any property in Venezuelan currency; 2. Converting from dollar to bolivar wouldn't make you have more purchase power or anything (to be honest, you would be left with - literally - tons of useless pieces of paper), unless you want to buy some basic items (like food), whose prices are fixed (but you would have huge problems to find people selling them at a fixed price, let alone selling them in large quantities); 3. The price you would pay would consider the state of the local economy, but you would pretty much pay not too much less than what you would pay for land in other countries in Latin America.

Same, that was the only one that sounded different to me and I know nothing about pianos. It was also the only one recorded from that angle and that room...
I actually quite liked the Baldwin in the beginning.. The 2000 dollar baby grand held up well against the bechstein and Steinway they were all comparable but there was a significant jump with the model D. The model D was clearly better. But the fact a 2000$ baby can sound comparable to 100k Steinway is pretty eye opening.
My issue wouldn't be the cost but instead the quality of sound and tuning. The final piano seems to cost that much because it was built as a work of art. It still sounds amazing though.
Actually, the Steinway model B has the most beautiful and smooth sound. "Pictures at exhibition" is an art object (also it's an excellent quality piano too)
Trust me bro, the pianos sound is not $2.4 million worth. I just hear a slight bit better sound quality with the more expensive piano, than the cheaper one. There is definitely not a $2.4 million sound difference. 🤣🤣🤣
The playing experience is surely very important too. That was difficult to assess on my small screen with small speakers... One would be less likely to put one's platform shoes on the keys on the more expensive pianos; just another consideration...
I love how the cheapest one sounds. It sounds nostalgic. Our late family saloon piano sounded like that. Too bad the only piece I knew then was Chopsticks
TU for some reason unknown, those pianos sitting in the background and him wearing black make me think of a funeral home or a coffin store I don’t know which.
Wow that Model D was absolutely fantastic. The final Steinway is more of an art piece it definitely has similar characteristics to that of the Model D in terms of sound quality. But the artistic beauty gets that price up!
@@DonnyPZ Are you perhaps thinking of "vaudeville"? That's a theater performance though. But more or less the same era (the end of its heyday at least)
That last piano was beautiful. I especially liked the artwork which was painted on it. You must have some really great connections in order to have access to a piano like that!!
@Satalurna Reading the article it sounds like if you are a professional musician looking to purchase a high end piano, they will let you visit the vault to try them out. There's only three people who have access directly but they bring other people in all the time.
@Satalurna Well, Lord Vinheteiro certainly plays amazingly well, so they might let him in just to see what he sounds like on their most expensive models :D (IDK, just guessing...) Also, free advertising for them?
That 1st piano has this special nostalgic sound including being slightly out of tune. I'm sure that certain genres as ragtime or silent movie scores will sound optimal on this instrument.
I've played 2 different grand pianos at 2 churches and there was an obvious difference in weight of the keys and pedal reaction, so yes there is a good difference in pianos.
I'll answer for him: yes, the difference in the touch of the keys (not to mention the sound quality) is brutal. But I've never played in a 2.5 million dollar piano, that must feel like heaven haha. I am a former musician, so I can tell those differences, and sometimes it sucks because I tend to be more demanding and I rarely have the chance to choose the piano I want to play on, but when I get to play on a great one, such us a Steinway and sons... It's such an experience. It feels like walking on a cloud to me. What about you? Did you perceive the differences in the sound quality? Regards from Spain!
The 1st piano was fun the 2nd piano was brighter the 3rd piano was smoother the 4th piano was richer the 5th piano was smooth and criptst. and the 6th piano was very bright and very smooth and rich sounding. I still like Yamaha the best!
@@elizabetharacelimaza2936 The last 2 are both Model d's. The difference between them is cosmetic, as the last one is pictures at an exhibition, a piano for art, not difference in sound. The 1st piano is piano is an older early to mid 20th century Console piano, where the strings are out of tune and the levers and hammers are a bit lower, giving it a slight disadvantage(not to be confused with spinet pianos, where the action is half dropped, giving it a very large disadvantage with response). The second one is an Otto Altenburg piano, which despite being based in The United States, makes European style pianos, due to the founders being immigrants from Germany. They Most Likely use different strings from the rest of the selection. It is also used, which might have affected the strings the slightest, since it looks great for a used and $2400 piano. The 3rd one is probably a late 20th century to mid 2010's c Bechstein. And it has a very reasonable sound since companies like Bechstein, Bosendorfer, and Steinway use really expensive material to make their pianos. The only downside to the Bechstein is that it is out of tune, which to my ear seems like it is in a tunable condition. The last one I am gonna talk about is the Steinway Model B. Steinway uses the same string for all their pianos(High Tensile Swedish Steel Core wire for treble strings, and Pure Copper Steel Core for bass strings). The only difference is that the model b is shorter in length with shorter strings, giving it a shorter lasting sound than the concert grand which is 9 foot (Around 300 cm) long. Hope this helped.
There is distinct differences in warth of the sound, how airy it is, the light or deep voice color and other factors as well. You must listen to understand
halley dziivi The more expensive One has a better sound for sure but i find the old and rusty Sound of the cheap One also charming and beatiful in a way

A good tuning would help, too. Personally, I didn't think the 2.5M piano sounded any better than the less expensive Steinway. It just had a lot of tacky stuff stuck on the case.

I don't know but, I just fell in love with playing the piano. Even though just played it for a year in school, I can feel that it has a perfect connection with me.
Yeah I think the audible quality started to plateau with the B. You could tell a little difference in the model D but not much. The final one was in different acoustics so it was kind of a wash.
Can confirm. It happens that the video was being played in background and i was reading an article. I turned it on to check, why the sound quality became better and yup, more expensive ones sound noticeably better even if you don't listen thoroughly. Not saying that the difference is huge, but who knows how it may affect your art.
The best happy playing of all these is the 2nd one although it cost 2400$ but listening to you while you are playing produced the best happy feelings like it was built to fit that music piece.

Since this took forever for me to find, the name of the pieces he plays are: 1) Arabesque No.1 by Debussy 2) Moonlight Sonata, 3rd Movement by Beethoven
Yeah they're definitely much closer from that point on, the 50k one is a bit muddier than the ones that follow it is probably the most notable bit. Feel like after that point its all going to be preference and none sound outright better (at least through youtube compression and then into my sennheisers)
A demonstration of the law of diminishing returns: the timbre of the second piano was a great improvement over the first, the third a much smaller gain over the second and the last three nearly indistinguishable. Of course, my impression was gained through a cheap speaker, a better sound system may have brought out qualities I did not hear.
And that is why I Bluetooth my computer over to a refurbished 1968 Sansui receiver & speakers. The thing with pianos & a few other instruments is that you have to match the right instrument to the right piece. Even the cheap Baldwins were a decent piano, and there is a certain quality to a piano that has been well maintained over many decades. A lot of early 20th century popular piano music was never performed on expensive pianos. The Baldwin is the only one that would sound decent in a small living room, let alone fit in one.
The clear difference I noticed over time was the improvement in bass fidelity; treble improved as well, but it was less noticeable. The "grand" sound of it got better, and I could tell that difference between the last two, however, there are several influencing factors: 1. the pianos are not all sublimely tuned as heard by the first one and have varying amounts of wear; 2. different recorders were used; 3. Audio compression, either in production or on RUclips; 4. I have a better than average audio setup, but it isn't quite what one would call audiophile. That being said, the results are inconclusive still. It's hard to make an objective decision with all of these defects, even if with my current setup, it is rather abundant for listening to compressed audio streams without hearing the defects. If you really want to get picky, then we can do some environment control to make sure humidity is low and temp is just warm enough to allow the instruments to produce the best sound. As a side note, I prefer to be a "practical audiophile" and think that anything over a few grand is absurd vanity (i.e. more than a pair of Abyss Diana V2 with 500 USD AMP and DAC) for just plain consumer listening and whatever mastered audio you can get your hands on without shelling unreasonable amounts of money. I mention something like Abyss Diana V2 because it makes sense given how long it lasts together with its high fidelity, and the AMP and DAC necessary to drive it are justified in that case. I'm quite certain that less money would be wasted if people would just buy these kinds of products that survive our lifetime instead of a product with a lifetime that we surpass and has to be repaired every now and then. There is a lot, however, that can be done with some good EQ and information on your headphone's frequency response, and very simple tuning such as setting the highest sample rate and bit depth natively supported, even if you think you couldn't hear the difference in your headphones. If the curve isn't flat, you might consider something simple like Equalizer APO, loading the graph of the frequency response, and just flip it over the x axis and you're done. It could be the cheapest pair of headphones and it will sound just that much better.
I kinda liked the 2nd and 3rd the most. The latter were only Steinway; they're very rich, mellow and crystal sounding, but also very "standard" and "typical" in my opinion. The second one wasn't specially very rich, but I can appreciate how clear the sound is. It doesn't feel muffled nor anything. The third one sounded round and mellow (although it can be mistaken as a muffled sound), as can be expected from a C. Bechstein, although this specific piano doesn't sound nearly as rich as the latter Steinway.
I can hear the second piano has more pure sound than the fist one, and the third one is definitely better than the second. But I can't tell any difference between others
I agree with the first part. But, it is obvious for me that the 4th one was considerably better than 3rd, and I felt how 5th was better than 4th, and thought :"wow this one sounds awesome". And yeah, no difference between the last and prelast. Sorry for my english. I don't know how you and other people liking your comment did't feel that. Maybe y'all should stop fucking in your ears? I was thinking about that the other day. I bought a 4 bedroom house on a quarter acre of nice land for less than $150k in the Midwest. If we moved our house to New York, rich people would live in it.
The reverberation of the metals and wood used inside gives it that sound, the best materials are usually the most expensive, and when you build a piano you need a LOT of material.
@@trueredlucky954 Yeah even with constant tunning and maintenance eventually the material degrades. Maybe highly tuned synthetics will last longer who knows?

You only can compair pianos if they are tuned and intonated by the same person. The Baldwin is just miserably tuned, without saying that it ever will sound like the Altenburg. I like the Altenburg, not this rich as a Bechstein or Steinway, but to pay for this difference 50 times as much or even more ?
@@fmcom.stettler9742 TOTALLY AGREE
@@fmcom.stettler9742
The Baldwin was actually tuned as good as is possible, it wasn't too badly in tune, but pianos as old cheap and used as this is can't be perfectly tuned to begin with.

Lol are you even a musician
HOL' UP
No dictator would sell land

The 2000 dollar baby grand held up well against the bechstein and Steinway they were all comparable but there was a significant jump with the model D. The model D was clearly better. But the fact a 2000$ baby can sound comparable to 100k Steinway is pretty eye opening.

Good question! I hope he answers sometime.
I've played 2 different grand pianos at 2 churches and there was an obvious difference in weight of the keys and pedal reaction, so yes there is a good difference in pianos.
Good question. Um curious for his answer.
Of course you can notice when you play a piece of litter and a brand new steinweys

And some people prefer more expensive piano

On second thought, if one wanted to play Remembering You by Roger Kellaway, piano #1 is priceless at $500
Certainly the difference between the second most expensive and most expensive ones isn't the playing quality, it is the artwork on the case.
But I can't tell any difference between others
highly agree
Highly agree too!
To hear sounds properly. (Может перестанете долбиться в уши. Чтобы блять нормально слышать)
Айбол Садмет wow that was just rude
If they don't tell you the price first do you still think the difference is obvious?
You are welcome to discuss music with me but if you say it that way then stop commenting
Agree af
Half a country or a 2 bedroom house in London
If you buy half of Venezuela you would just get a civil war
@@alessandrotortia7671 just buy the whole mate
I was thinking about that the other day. I bought a 4 bedroom house on a quarter acre of nice land for less than $150k in the Midwest. If we moved our house to New York, rich people would live in it.
@Sc C I've lived in England for 14 years now and I'm liking it so far so sure mate
blksky I live in Hong Kong and 2.5 million is about as much as a parking space. Yes, a parking space for your car.
The steinway & sons piano sounds perfect especially the bass tone
The cheaper ones sound closer to percussion instruments while the more expensive ones sound more string like
The reverberation of the metals and wood used inside gives it that sound, the best materials are usually the most expensive, and when you build a piano you need a LOT of material.
@@I8THEmagictoaster not only that, but pianos, unlike stringinstruments, does not bet better with time, they actually gets worse.
@@trueredlucky954 Yeah even with constant tunning and maintenance eventually the material degrades. Maybe highly tuned synthetics will last longer who knows?
No
That's because pianos are percussion instruments 😂😂😂😂😂
Calls 500 dollars cheap.
Me: * checks bank account
Bank Account: $12.75
That piano probably costs at least 4x that for real too. Notice it said (very used). He got it for cheap, but it's not cheap.
You could always get a job
TheBigMclargehuge don’t take it literal man. It’s a joke
Its cheap for what it is.. Pianos are expensive instruments, so yeah 500$ is a pretty cheap and low quality one..
@@mrblackace3 That's the problem though, he didn't even show an actual cheap one. He only got it for $500 because it was 'very used'. There are many types of pianos for $500 and less, especially digital ones.
1. Arabesque No. 1
2. Moonlight Sonata Movement 3
Thank you.
@@0718114 your welcome
Omfg thank you, I commented a month ago asking after looking for twenty minutes in the comments and it’s not listed once. Thank you very much
I was looking for the arabesque... sublime
Many thanks
Aside from the massive sound difference to the ear-trained musician, the intonation and mistakes become increasingly known on a quality board. 👌
