My Mother told me that during WWII women used their men's ties to make themselves a skirt. This is a great idea. Did you think about opening the ties? My mother told me they opened the ties (which made them twice as wide). I never would have thought about using men's neck ties. No, I have not seen anything like this around here. This is Eastern Kentucky. It can take from 5 to 10 years before a new trend gets here. By then, it is no longer done anywhere else. Which explains why the stuff that will not sell anywhere else is shipped here. Thank you for showing us a new way to make our jeans bigger and give them that Boho effect. Your homemade Boho jeans look wonderful with your cute blouse. Great job.
Oh I like the idea of opening the ties up. That not only gives you more fabric but distributes the weight. They are surprisingly heavy. You don’t worry about trend, you do you 😉
I think bought that at first too but then I figured that since the denim is heavier than the ties, leaving them as is and backing them with additional fabric gives them the weight and stability to be closer to the denim's weight. If they were opened you would get more fabric to use but might lose structural integrity.
I’ve made a skirt with opened ties. It was so flowy and light and silky. It was beautiful. Taking the liner out make all the difference in the world :)
I can also see this technique used in remaking a shirt that's tight across the stomach looser with inserts in side seams to make it fuller. We did this in the 70's to make bell-bottom jeans, but it was done from the knee down.
I bought a lot of old ties at thrift shops to use the fabric - only the tie fabric; I was amazed at what was inside ties! - for the lining of a rain poncho. You have given me another way to use ties - to increase the size of jeans. When I`m thrifting, the size is what it is, there are no other sizes. If I like the colour, fabric and other details, I can work with it. Even if I thought it was awful as a tie, it might be great down the sides of jeans
These are amazing, and you looked fantastic in them! Thanks for walking us through the steps. They remind me of the jeans I used to embellish in the 70’s. Now I can purchase all of those “small sized” jeans I see in the thrift store. One question, I don’t have a serger. I guess I can get similar results with a zig zag stitch.
I'm so glad I found your channel. I like the way you explain how to do what you are doing, and I like your style of presentation. Thank you! Can't wait to try this!
❤ ❤❤i like. Super cute idea! And great use of six items that would have been discarded. Now we know what to do with left over ties and sheets! 😂😊 I love the ties on denim. Looks so retro! 70's vibe. 😎 Fabs!! Tfs.
I did something similar back in the early 80s. I opened the tie sewed it to the outside leg then sewed a piece of fabric on the inside because the seams were too scratchy. Thanks for reminding me how much I loved those pants and giving me the motivation to make another pair or 5. 😂 I had to laugh when you said you were short then measured the outside seam at 39 inches. It's no wonder I've always had to hem my pants when I measured 32 inches. My family has always said I was as tall as a mushroom and you confirmed it. 😂 🍄
I love this idea. My thought was to sew them in opposite directions. For some reason that makes sense to me. I really want to try this some time soon. Very interesting idea. ❤❤❤❤❤
I love this idea. I have been trying to figure out the best way to attach my dad's ties to a T-shirt quilt and this technique of adding them to the backing fabric will do just the trick, I think. I started by opening up one of the ties, which ended up being too flimsy for a quilt top, but with a backing fabric, I think that might work for me, too.
If you're like me you almost always come up with an alternate idea once you have completed the project. I think that is part of the joy od upcycling, looking at problem areas with my problem-solving hat on. 18:00 I would have removed enough of the top stitching from the tie to sandwich the waistband between the tie and the sheet. there would be no need to zig-zag in that case which would visually be a cleaner finish. Along the same line, I would have turned under the hem edge of the sheet before adding the ties, faster and stronger than a hand stitched hem. I don't share any of this from a critical point of view, you did a great job. I just want to share options.
I love it. Always looking for new and better ways to do things. And yes, creating always brings challenges you might not be prepared for. Thanks for the ideas!
I love this idea. You are a genius Wonder if the idea of opening up the ties and backing it with something heavier such as the washable decor fabrics to be closer to the denim weight. I bet slow stitching, to look like quilting could be a nice touch too. Thank you for sharing this !!!!
Do you mean the waist? I’m afraid I didn’t do a video but sewed in a little bit of wide elastic to help with the size. Sorry. I am working on another tie project though 😉
Those look great! I'm wondering how they did in the wash. My bit of rebellion against 1960's dress codes 👗 was to wear men's shirts and ties👔. About washing them... of course I did because teenage neck sweat happens, even on girls 😂🥵🤣, but I washed very gently by hand. Thanks for your video!
I actually threw them in the wash on delicate before I used them, then washed new jeans with the ties attached after on a delicate cycle as well. But honestly I think they could take the regular cycle.
Great video! I am a beginner, and my pants are too tight, only in the waist, so i guess i will use your method with ties, super video thx! Yours look cool!
Just found ya, I’ve done this same thing with ties several ways. One tie that added about an inch to waist, several ties to add color/interest but never thought to sew directly on a stabilizing fabric BRAVO 👏 love that! Thank you for sharing just subscribed, looking forward to more of your inspirations!
I think what I would have done for the backing hem under the tie tips is a little fusible interfacing and a bit of bias binding, maybe made with a piece of the matching tie.
Really nice job, Stephanie! Very clever! You found the perfect patterned neck ties to give the jeans a cute boho look. I was thinking, in order to make the waistband smaller to fit you better, maybe you could sew a short length of wide waistband elastic under the neck tie sections at the sides???
Cool idea. I have thrifted a bunch of jeans which all seem to be to small in the waist/hip area. Like you I really do need to be wearing my glasses when I shop. I'm looking for a way to get them to fit, but I'm not necessarily wanting to add any flare, some of them have enough of that already. Any ideas would be welcome. Thanks.
Well you can add some small wedges to the waistline without taking the fabric all the way to the hem. I haven’t tried it yet, but maybe I’ll work it into a project 😉
These were between 1-2 sizes too small. Try to measure what you need to add by putting them up against a pair that does fit. That should help you gauge what you need to add. 😉. And have fun
I through them in the washer on delicate. They came out perfect. Those ties are pretty tough, lol. Of course I washed them by themselves before I used them in the project. 😉

I inserted white eyelet in the side seams of a pair of jeans… using the sleeves from a blouse!! Love what you’re doing!
I bet that was beautiful! Thanks 😊
@b_stephanie it was so easy. I also added some eyelet patches. They are my favorite summer jeans.

There is an almost felt type lining in modern ties. Open the tack stitches and you can pull it out easily without harming the tie
