  • In this video we are going through three different, easy ways to get a nice smooth satin finish. Satin finishes can be challenging because you can't really polish them, but they look very clean and can give that nice vintage look that many people love.

    good advice on satin being the last clear coat. i usually tell newbs that all paint is naturally full gloss, and flattener is added to get different finishes - flat, satin, eggshell, semi-gloss, etc etc.

    Never knew how complex painting a guitar was until I ran into your channel. I used to paint houses with my old man when I was younger as a side job. So watching these videos is kind of a therapy as a painter. Learning alot on guitar painting and materials out there from you. Subscribed!

    Brad, Thanks for your help, especially your series on the Solo ES335 kit. It inspired me to try it myself and after a few mess ups I am very pleased with the results. I don’t have a well ventilated shop and my wife is very sensitive to strong odors, so I thought I’d try something water based. I found some varathane water based poly that I could brush on with a foam brush. I used trans tint red stain and found I hadn’t sanded all the sealer off. What a mess! I eventually added the tint to the poly and gave it three coats sanding lightly between coats. Then I applied about twelve coats of clear poly gloss and let it dry for two weeks. I started sanding with 400 and gave it two more coats of clear and let it dry a couple days before using 800, 1000, 1500, 2000 and 3000 and 3M rubbing compound. I had my doubts but it came out pretty nice. Installed some epi probuckers that sound great after some wiring repairs and adding an extra ground between the tone pots. I appreciate your channel. Again, thanks!

    Hello brad. I’ve been following your videos, and I’m working on a tele finishing project. I think I’ve decided on sealer (shellac aerosol) paint (rust oleum 2k purple paint+primer) but I am not totally decided on what clear coat to use for a satin finish. Let me know if my choices are ok so far, and what your recommendation would be for a clear coat! Much love from Wisconsin, hope you and your family are well.

      Hi Sam, those should work. Although I don’t love the combo paint and primer cans, they generally perform ok. Rustoleum also has their painters touch satin clear, which is probably a decent option based on your selections.

    2:15 Dear Brad many thanks, I'm painting my guitar with satin white, then spray with satin clear coat, after the clear coat, do I sand or wet sand? what grit please? or do I polish with buffing compound?

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove  5 месяцев назад +1

      I generally dry sand, then polish. I have several videos on sanding and polishing that will be much better than me trying to explain in a reply.

    Do I have to lacquer a sanded guitar neck? I like it how it is after sanding but people say you have to lacquer it or use satin paint.

      I prefer using a thin oil finish because I don’t like the feel of a heavily coated neck.

    I used a hard wax oil on my last build, and it's my favourite finish so far. It's easy to apply, quick to cure, looks and feels fantastic! Really great for the back of the neck as well.

    Ive recently bought a Suhr modern in Satin finish but have some slight dents that look like scratches.....
    Can i steam out a dent through a finish like this or would it ruin the finish?

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove  4 месяца назад

      I expect that would ruin the finish. Almost like a water mark on a wooden coffee table.

    Tried the satin look using Varathane for my last build to have a clear finish over barn wood. It did the job, but is still soft and still leaves fingernail imprints after many months. Have you ever used the CRYSTALAC products from Solo? I have no place to use anything spray, or with harsh vapors. These look like they would do what I am looking for but can not find to much on how they work. Have the urge to do another build, but unsure how to get the finish I am looking for in the space I have to work.

    MAH-MAN! I stumbled upon your channel out of a search I did for finishing ideas for guitars - I just ordered an "M6" guitar from PRECISION GUITAR KITS. You should check that guitar out if you haven't seen it already! It's quite a gorgeous piece. Anyway, the neck and body will be African Mahogany, and I was thinking of finishing the neck and headstock without color, more "natural," then taking some black stain to the body... I was curious as to what the combo of African Mahogany with black stain would look like... 🤔🤗🤣

      Ok, that is probably solvent from the prior layers bursting through the dry top layer. Does it look like pin holes in the finish?
      You’ll need to sand back and re-apply the lacquer if I’m right. It’s caused by coating too heavily and quickly. The top layer dries from air exposure while the earlier coats are still a bit wet and the solvent makes holes/bubbles as it escapes.

    • @davidlishman4656
      @davidlishman4656 Год назад

      @@BradAngove Most of the bubbles are just trapped in the finish. I sanded back and went through into my stain. This is the first guitar I've ever done and I've had every problem you could imagine. I thankyou for all your help I do appreciate it. After sanding it back and applying more lacquer it appears like there are more bubbles.Grrrr, I need to send you a picture of this maybe.
