- Everyone talks about gloss topcoats. But what about matte, satin, and semi-gloss? In this video, I explain my approach to doing these types of clear topcoats.

You really do a wonderful job on your finishes. You've obviously done lots of homework and experimenting. Great work
This is the video I needed to help me through my project this weekend! Thanks!
Thank you so much Chris, this was a very informative video, you’re the best !
Very detailed, well paced educational video. Thanks, Chris! I have been wondering about just this subject - how satin and flat finishes are leveled out after spraying.
Great tutorial Chris.
thank you so much for these videos!!!
you are a very thoughtful, articulate teacher. i do have a confession: i hate amber finishes. ive seen these in your vids and never cared for them. the only finish i fell in love with was a sukop bass, mostly because it felt like an extension of my soul. but i would really love to see you with some nice brilliant dyes on figured woods that really pop. anyway, thanks for all you do, i’ll watch regardless of what finishes you use.
And I hate brilliant dyes. See how that works?
Wonderful video thanks
Iso..... I ran the pouring operation at the biggest urethane roller skate manufacturing plant and after about 6 years I got Isocyanate sensitization. (Chemical Asthma) I was an athlete and at the Olympic training center had a very high lung capacity. It took a while to manifest a little at a time but when I finnally went to the hospital I had 50% of an average persons lung capacity. Very scary shit. Fortunately, with steroids It came back a month later although muscle atrophy was a side effect at the end of my competitive season. Be careful. (I was in my 20s and elite lol) Its funny, when I go to visit my friend at his factory, if I smell the urethane, I get a scratchy throat.
Is there any way I could get / find a single cutaway body like that?
If you were doing a satin finish, what grit would you stop at?
High, Chris. Thanks for all you share 🙏. I am thinking about using Total Boat Teak sealer for a couple cheap guitar kit bodies. I am going for something like a TV yellow. Do you think it would work, perhaps with a few coats and maybe some added pigment? I am not concerned about a gloss finish, but if you could suggest a cheap and easy gloss finish, over the tak sealer, I would appreciate that too. Cheers, Mike
I have no idea. I have never used the product and I have never heard of it either.
Is the Centurion sanding sealer catalyzed? What is its product number? Thanks for all the great videos!!! You Rock.
No.

Hi Chris- as an auto painter who does guitar finishes quite regularly I am intrigued by this method- without actually buffing a sanded finish wouldn’t this leave the products chemical composition exposed, leading to accelerated breakdown of the product? We were always taught that the cutting action of a buff/polish re-seals the polymers in the product, preventing accelerated degradation. Interested to hear what your experience is with it at all? I’ve been a bit frustrated going back to re-spray my satin finished guitars because I didn’t think I could get away with any sanding.. cheers!
Guitars aren’t cars. They live in very different environments.
There are some waxes out there designed for matte and satin finishes.
@@chase_modugno yeah for sure, but not cutting compounds as far as I’m aware?
Chris is Centurions grain filler catalyzed ? does it sand quicker that Solorez ICBINL.
Do you mean Centurion's High Build Sanding Sealer? No, a catalyst is not needed. It sands about the same as ICBINL.
Hi Chris, I’m learning so much from your videos so a big thank you for sharing your knowledge. I have a future project in mind which would be a guitar body that has a 3 color stain pattern (water or alcohol based) that will need to be weathered. I then want to use a matte coating to keep the look. Any thoughts ?
Should look nice.
After watching this, my head is spinning! It seems finishing is a dark art. I’m about to assemble my first solid body kit guitar with a basswood body. Any suggestions for a relatively easy finish for the first time builder?
Danish oil. Wipe it on, let it dry, and you’re done.
@@HighlineGuitars Thanks!
What size / cfm is your exaust fan.Ive seem many versions on line which one works ?
8" fan @ 882cfm
I always thought you couldn’t sand a satin or Matte finish. You were expected to lay down a flew less final coat. So even with urethane, you won’t compromise the finish, with sanding? How do you gage the amount of reflection? I’m confused.
Modern high tech sanding abrasives like Super Assilex make is possible to sand satin or matte finishes. However, I strive to lay down perfect final coats. That's not easy for most people to do.
Chris what would happen if you buffed the finish. Would it come out high gloss or stay as matte
It shifts from matte to satin.
Seems like you had no issues thinning with water, eh? Did you consider trying to thin with the crystalac retarder?
What do you recommend as an alternative to the eagle abrasives for polish sanding (>P1000)? As much as I'd like to use them, I just can't justify the price, especially being in Canada and not the US. I currently use Brite-tone for all my guitars, and have no issues with level sanding dry with Mirka products up to P1000. However, in your opinion, what would be the next best thing for dry polish sanding?
My issue with thinning is that I have to apply many more coats and that takes too long. As far as a sanding alternative, I don't know of anything that comes close to Super Assilex. Go with Mirka Abralon above P1000 if you can get it.
How bad is the odor on a water based 2K clear?
Mild. But if you can smell it, you’re overexposed and it’s very toxic.
@@HighlineGuitars I was thinking more about the exhaust in a residential neighborhood....do your filters help?
@@TomL- there is no outgoing odor at all. That’s why I switched to water-based. I couldn’t take the fumes from solvent-based finishes.
yeah, that mask isn't doing anything...lol
Yes it is. According to 3M, as long as I frequently change the cartridges, the are very effective at filtering isocyanates. It's also noteworthy that the isocyanates in Centurion's water-based 2K products are highly refined are are far less dangerous than the isocyanates found in solvent-based 2K products. Research is a beautiful thing. Try it sometime.
