Herd Rescues Buffalo from Lions and Crocodiles!

- Over a decade ago, there was an epic battle between lions, buffaloes and a crocodile at a waterhole called Transport dam. That video was aptly named Battle at Kruger. Well, 10 years later, the next generations of lions at Transport Dam recently faced their own failed hunt due to a huge herd of buffalo and crocodiles interfering!
Thuli Khumalo, head of Atamela Tours, captured this heart-pumping sighting while on a tour to the Kruger National Park.
After lunch at Skukuza Rest Camp, Atamela’s game drive full of tourists arrived at the world-famous Transport Dam, in the hopes of seeing some action. Little did they know what they were actually in for.
They spotted a pride of lions lying in the shade, overlooking the water.
If you spot lions hiding in the shade at a waterhole, it is often a good idea to stick around. Lions are opportunistic, so they will often try and hunt any animal that comes close enough.
Surely enough, a large herd of impala went down to the water and the lions gave chase! The impalas were too fast for the lions, but at the edge of the water, they spotted an old buffalo bull.
The lions chased that buffalo and it ran into the water where out of nowhere, a crocodile starts taking a go at the already targeted buffalo.
The buffalo decides that the water is probably more dangerous than on land, where it can potentially outrun the pride of lions that are now waiting for him to re-emerge from the water.
As soon as the buffalo hit the surface, he makes a run for it, with the lions following close on its tail.
When buffaloes are under threat, they will call for help. Luckily, for this buffalo, his calls were answered!
A massive herd of buffalo that was on its way to the dam saw the commotion and chased the lions away, saving the life of fellow buffalo, unbeknown to us if it is from the same herd.

This is unreal. This buffalo went in water, then battled with crocodile, came out of water, kept lions in respect. I declare it the most couragous and powerful buffalo of the year.

The tenacity of that buffalo is legendary! Saved himself from the crocs and held off the lions including two big males long enough for backup to arrive. Good on him. The desire to live is strong in that one. Props given.

@@triplocore Actually the lions were hungry they were just strategizing because they had to bring down an animal that could deal them fatal damage with one hit. They needed to tire him out by keeping him running. Then one would jump on his back when he was distracted and attack him from that position until he lost his footing. Then they would pile on and the others would go for the legs and throat to gold him down until they could suffocate him.

That was one smart buffalo. I’ve seen buffalos defend themselves alone against a lion pride but this one defended itself really well.

The lions just grabbing 4 them by year, statistically, crocs are the most common predators of buffalos, so isn't rare a buffalo escapes.
Lionesses aren't capable of taking something like that down, but 4 lions probably could.

Sure, I would do that too if I weighed about 1000 kg an had massive horns on my head. But as I currently don't, I think my best chance against lions and crocodiles is definitely not going to be to face them head on...

Something I have noticed about the african buffalo, they are actually extremely agile for such a large animal. They can run and then turn completely around and stop on a dime to take on a lion chasing from behind.
Also the herd which normally comes to the aid of the victim always have that familiar determined trot when they approach, you know they mean business!

i've noticed through all my research that water buffalo are one of the few African herbivores that actually look out for each other and protect each other. Most other animals just run away- leaving every man for himself. But not the water buffalo, they are smart enough to realize that they have strength in numbers and empathy towards others of their herd. Elephants and monkies do that as well.
Some members of the herd look out for each other, not the majority. Most of the time that buffalos are other animals with herds are isolated from the herd is because of the herd cowardly disbanding and scattering because of a simple predator attack. Their natural instinct is to run putting themselves in further harm because of possibly being isolated. If they could comprehend that instead of disbanding the herd, they should always stand their ground against predators, just by their sheer size and numbers, the predators would ultimately leave them alone.

This is exactly what means to look at eyes of the fear!! A Brave Buffalo didn't give up, fighted in water and on the ground and this made him the winner! At first, it seems like the croc got the upper hand when the water was deep, once that bull started feeling land under the water. That's when the bull had the advantage take the croc.
