Windows users - i downloaded “loopmidi” for the aggregate midi device and was good to go. Had the lights done for a 30min set the next day 🤙 and I’ve never done it before Windows 10- Pro tools - emu usb pro- emu program That’s all that was needed
You saved my bands life. I have a show later this month and I’ve been going Grey trying to figure this out. I formally used DMXIS through Logic X on a MacBook. I no longer have the DMXIS box and my MacBook is now too outdated to be used with Emu. I went around in circles trying all of these other garbage lighting programs out there and hitting a wall until I found your video I think you might be the only guy on RUclips addressing simple program switching via midi and somehow I can’t believe that it’s that scarce on RUclips when so many bands need this stuff I’ve used logic for 15 years so I figured how hard could ableton be just for simple backing tracks with midi light programming around them so I got the 90 day trial which will afford me enough time to do the show I am also amazed at the lack of content / tutorials of substance from Enttec when it comes to Emu. All of this stress for some stupid songs. You’re the best 😊
Hi Julian, So glad I found this video! Your 1st video on DMXIS is what got me into doing lighting for my band! With the previous version (DMXIS) you were able to have multiple MIDI tracks, all with their own individual DMXIS VST running. With this I was able to make a track for each of the lights in my rig, this kept things clean and I was able to only have the faders I needed for that light configured and macro'd on the track. With EMU, it seems you can only have 1 track with an instance of the EMU VST attached to it. If you try to make a new MIDI (Or any track for that matter) and attach the VST, when you go to configure the sliders for automation nothing happens. The 1st MIDI track will still let you configure, but none of the others will. I had a work around for this, which was configure all of the sliders on 1 MIDI track and just duplicate the track, but it only allows for 125 faders to be configured, and I have about 278 faders in my rig. Just didn't know if maybe you had a work-around or had any ideas on how to fix this? I know the "best" way would be to link programs from EMU and trigger them with a MIDI note like in your video, but for some reason I was really comfortable just controlling all of my lights with automation lanes. Any help you could give me would be awesome! I'm kind of at a loss right now. Thank you again!
Thanks for this video man it's very well done! I've been diving in to this a bit to set up some stuff for a smaller lighting setup for some shows next year, and randomly stumbled across this. Very helpful stuff. Hope you are doing well :)
totally did not expect to see Lamorn here but now I gotta ask - did you end up giving this a go, and did it work out for ya? What kind of solutions do you usually use for this kinda stuff?
Amazing Julian! Thanks so much for this. Super helpful as I'm trying to wrap my mind around building my lightshow for Aromi... I may be using Ableton so I can trigger lights and video clips for my livesets... it's a huge jump from using FL Studio for the last 10 years. Anyways man major props and mad respect for you. I'm just amazed by how far you've come in the years I have followed you. You're a big inspiration! Keep up the great work.
Hi Thanks for the great video. I have a set of DMX512 LED pixel lights. These are plane basic fixtures. Can I use QLC+ to set the address of the fixtures, before I can use them
Could you make another video on EMU? I still can't understand how to save programmes, there's just so many updates.. I feel like might be missing a few steps..
This is such an amazing thing but sadly dealbreaker for me is the subscription model of software. Id rather pay 3 times the yearly price and own the software.
I am new this software as well as dmx. I'm trying to add my two different Shehds lights to the EMU list. I just purchased the "DMX USB PRO" My ENTTEC download is in my "Programs Files" folder NOT "Programs Files (x86)" and there is no DMX LIBRARY Folder? Did I do something wrong in my download or is it because I'm on the 3 month free license trial? I really want to get into this software. Thanks in advance for any help or tips?
Does anyone know if theres a way that a Max 4 Live that can control this hardware device? I would love to use this on an Ableton Push 3 standalone, but it doesn't have VST support (it's version of Live is a port of Linux)
Many thanks for explaining some things the manual failed to address entirely! How would you go about controlling a 16-bit dimmable fixture through the vst or even through the main app? It seems like torture to manually automate the fine dimmer fader in accordance with the coarse dimmer fader? Is there a way to automate the intensity in a way that it automatically does both the coarse AND the fine control? In the newer pan/tilt widget it has the fine motor control embedded, but I don't find this happening when using 16 bit dimming fixtures.
Some of my lights are 5 pin and some are 3 pin. Can you still daisy chain them together with the proper 3 pin to 5 pin cables without issues? I also noticed that the Enttec DMXIS is 5 pin but the light in this video is 3 pin. So I may already know the answer just want to confirm.
You can easily make adapters by wiring the according Pins together on each connector. Usually they're marked with numbers from 1 to 3/5 (1= Ground, 2=+, 3=-, so basically the same as audio XLR)
I'm having an issue when I bring in multiple lights that are the same type unit. They have different dmx addresses and work fine in emu but when I bring them in using vst they all get controlled by the same channel.
Hi. Thanks for video. I have purchassed Usb Pro and firmware on it is 0.0. When downloaded 1.44 Firmware Ia m unable to instal it. I have contacted Enttec but so far no luck . Just wondering if you had any issue with yours and possible solution. Thanks.
The software licensing for EMU is not good. Neither is the fixture definition system, as you pointed out. The free version has extremely limited fixtures available, and you can't add your own. So you have to sign-up for the subscription, then you have the full available list of available fixture definitions, and if the fixture is not in the list, you can ask Emu support to add it, which reportedly takes a week or so. I purchased the Enttec DMX USB Pro adapter and tried the free version out. I'm a new user, and wanted to demo it to see if it would work for me. But the free version is so hamstrung there is no point in even trying it out. Your fixtures won't work, unless they are Enttec or one of a few generic models. Why they decided this free demo version was a good idea, I'll never know. As a new DMX user just starting out, I'm not subscribing to software I can't even try out. For that reason, I'm going to pick something else. Ultimately I think this decision is going to limit their user base for this software, most likely to DJs that were already using Dmxis.
Awesome tutorial. I got everything setup on my Mac with EMU and Ableton. Only problem, Ableton loses the automation all the time. I am running this in session view, using the VST plugin on one midi channel to trigger the banks the other one for the programs. I already mailed Enten and Ableton, they said the problem is too complex and I should look for some help somewhere else (which really upset me since I paid spent some money on the software). I need help very urgently, for we run shows every weekend and it is not working without resetting it all the time. Any ideas?
What do you mean by Ableton "loses automation"? Explain more in depth and I might be able to help. Do you mean the signal stops working? Or something in Ableton goes wrong? What EXACTLY is the problem?
Exactly, the signal in one or both midi channels turns white and doesn't work anymore, the lighting program then stops. One has two reset the automation with the back arrow in the toolbar.@@opperhoofdrampeneer8324
@@muffamuffamuffa hey there, I actually contacted the Entech Support another time. They got back to me and told me that they found the issue I have with the automation, they will solve the problem and get back to me as soon as possible.
Well that answered my question from the 5 year ago video. Rad, thanks. NTW, Showsync still had the DMXIS as recommended hardware/setup in official docs. I shot over a message, but just FYI.
Hi Julian! I've just recently programmed my first dj lighting show which went down really well. However, im limited to only being able to assign 16 faders in ableton to control the emu parameters. I've got my second gig coming up and I would love to have more faders setup to further enhance the light show. Thanks! Goron
I would not recommend EMU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i got the subscription and it will not work with Ableton on a windows pc. Not being able to make your own fixtures, no chanel mask and a subscription. I will just keep using my already paid for and still working DMXIS

For LED strips you need universe control which is more involved than what you can do with EMU.

That would be because you’re using the free version. If you’re using the subscription version, you get 512 faders with the VST3
It seems You're using Ableton Live Lite, which limits user to 16 tracks max. Upgrade to Suite
