The Ball-Catching Expert Who Caught A-Rod's 3000th Hit

- Zack Hample isn't your typical fan at a ball game. He's there to snag baseballs, and do it with a studied, meticulous approach. In this VICE Sports exclusive, we hung out with the "Ball Hawk" in the days following his catch of Alex Rodriguez's 3000th hit. While in some ways it served as the pinnacle of his time in the stands it also brought with it a firestorm of media coverage and public opinion that wasn't always friendly. Life can be lonely in the bleachers, too.

So it wasnt just any guy....it HAD to be.....the guy that had an obsession with collecting baseballs from games and had over 8000 of them in his apt. Had to, just had to.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
He wanted it the most I guess
proof of simulation or fate
11000 career total now
@Huntero so he cheats
Say what you want, but 1) he gave up $150k for charity, 2) it is eerily amazing how he manages to do this, 3) he gives the balls away to kids frequently, and 4) he gave up $150k for charity. Also, he gave up $150k for charity. More power to him.
Thanks, I appreciate the kind comment.

This guy is a class act. Couldn't have picked a more respectful route to go with the ball.
+John Silva This ball was marked with AR and the number 1 as it was used for the first ball.

The balls were marked up for

he couldnt the ump authenticated it that night
The player is already rich and famous and can have almost anything he wants. Let this Zack dude have the fucking ball.
Or pay for it.
Thiago Monteiro the point is that A-Rod worked his ass off to get 3000 hits. He should be able to get the ball.
Thiago Monteiro that's not the point. the guy has 8000 other balls. You only get to hit number 3000 once. imagine working your entire life for that and this loser won't give up the ball.
Ryan157711 It's also an achievement for the ball guy to catch this particular ball.
Ryan157711 You also get to catch 8000 balls once. He has also been catching balls *his entire life* as well. Now imagine you having all of those baseballs you've worked so hard for your entire life, and they get robbed. Besides if you had something extremely precious to you, and someone asked for it you would refuse. Everyone would and they can't deny it.
When he started talking in different languages I was dying 🤣
Learning turkish so hes ready hah
Huge respect for the guy, on not being a douche and selling it, then keeping the money to himself and instead gave it to charity.
+Jackson Targarios most people saying he would've been a douche by keeping it probably would've kept the money for themselves.

Really sad that people decided to hate the guy before they even knew what the end result would be... Without him holding on to that ball, $150,000 would have never gone towards cancer research for kids... This guy did exactly what he should have done, and what I would have done... Hold on to the ball and don't jump to any quick decisions and try to figure out the best end result. He could have easily sold that ball at auction for life changing money yet decided to go the best route possible where everyone wins. This guy is a complete badass in my book. He handled the situation PERFECTLY while thousands of dumb asses would have never ended up doing what he did. All you haters are a joke, I'll end it at that.

Catching hit balls is a big part of baseball. Zack caught a special ball, after buying a prime location ticket, being ready and making the catch. This is a valuable ball and potentially worth a good bit of money (to him), that is pennies to the Team and even A-Rod. So let’s be fair, all the haters who trashed Zack, “claim” they would give it back immediately. But would they ? It’s easy to say that, until YOU have $50,000 - $250,000 in your hand. Zack was badgered into what he did eventually, but he could have auctioned the ball, gave $150,000 to his charity and still had plenty left over. He should have gotten something out of this, whether you like him or not. I just don’t believe all the hate mail was written by “saints” who would have handed it over. Sorry.
ya you right, anyone who gave it back is a chump.
Spot on!
@rizzo69cawould people really hate on someone who is one rung above an average joe and won't give away something to a millionaire employed by billionaires? i know sports fans have weird/non-existent logic but i don't get it.
Well said!
Dude sounds like a winner to me
People need to chill and stop hating this guy for catching the damn ball. There's no rule that says you have to return the 3000 hit ball. $150,000 is pocket change for the Yankees they should have paid him $500,000
It's funny how people hated a rod but then help a rod all of a sudden when he hit 3000
Maybe because they hated the other guy more?
Why is zack getting so much hate I would've kept it, I mean it's not everyday you will get someone's 3000 hit if anything I would congratulate sack for getting a legendary ball

This guy seems very intelligent but might come across weird to some people.
+Nick Cooper I would say it's because this guy is very passionate about baseball and most people will never be this passionate about anything in their entire lives so it's easier for others to classify him as weird rather than find something they can enjoy as much.
Yes very well said :)
I thought this was a comedy sketch at first 😂
he probably swapped it for an identical one
Shit, that ball probably had more ways of identifying it's authenticity then a 100 dollar bill.
They had the letter "R" for Rodriguez and a number for the pitch. They would switch the baseball after every pitch. It was also authenticated by the MLB
They don't switch balls after every pitch that would take forever.
i know. it was only for alex.
some indiana jones shit
I would have given it back for signed shirts from everyone on the roster, signed balls from everyone on the roster, free season tickets for life behind the plate, A-Rod's bat and glove, meeting all the players, throwing out the first pitch at the yankees game and free food at all the games.
They wouldn't have given all of that. Nice try, though.
Theyd give out free season tickets tho for like 5 years maybe in good seats but not behind the plate

Thanks. That's nice of you to say.
Zack Hample Keep the content coming, I love watching your videos!
People pressured him into giving it back
I don't really understand why giving it back to him was such a necessity. It's like the old adage "give it to the kid." You are not required to give the ball to them. Is it a nice gesture, sure, but they have many more years of attending games in them. Sooner or later, they can get a tossup themselves.
Same with A-Rod's 3000th hit. You're not required to give it back to him. I think of it as winning the lottery. You get $300M and according to this, people expect you to spend it on developing countries in Africa, helping the homeless, and not for yourself because YOU have money. (for buying food, gas, clothes, etc.) That's dumbass logic right there. He can keep the ball if he wants. So what if he has 8000 baseballs?
I think you're the only sensible person here.
+Zack Hample OMG ITS YOU!
Tbh I think most people in his position, even the people who are hating on him would've kept the ball.
I agree totally, except that analogy is a little off because the ball wont even save arods life like why does he need it so bad jeez ya know...?
I think the guy who actually bats the milestone deserves to have the ball he hit as a memento. Not some selfish prick who goes out of his way to hog all the balls he can.
If 'A-Rod' really wants that ball, he has more than enough money he's earned over his career hitting them, to offer to buy it.

I went to Yankee Stadium with my friend on around September 20th last year for a game of the Red Sox vs the Yankees. During batting practice I was blown away when I saw this guy standing a few rows behind me. I run to go tell my dad "hey this is that guy who collects balls" and before I knew it Big Papi hits one right over to us. I could never have gotten to it, but my friend who didn't come with me to talk to my dad runs and picks up the ball, beating out Zack. chinaboyhere when the guy makes 100+ million a year 50k is like nothing. If the player truly wanted the ball he could pay more than that for it.
Sirs _ I’m not talking about the player I’m talking about the fans
Those haters probably collect jail time and STDs. You have an insane collection of baseballs, keep it up man!
i will never fault a guy for weighing his options against a million / billion dollar player / company.
