WOW! A big thank you to Landshark Picker! I had cleaned all of the contacts that I could see but didn't know about the springs in the back of the board. Mine are pretty worn with 3/4 of a circle worn in from the springs. I cleaned them and turned the springs hoping for a different contact surface. Total pages printed on my printer is now, thanks to Landshark, 11,825. Thanks again. Scott
You're a lifesaver! I don't know anything about printers, so I didn't know you could just remove the thing with all the ink cartridges in it. I took this out and then put it back in and that fixed the problem for me. I had been printing business cards and half of a sheet got stuck. I got the printhead message after removing the business cards. Thanks!!!
This worked great for me! I used an art gum (white) eraser, so there wasn't much debris, and it cleaned those contacts right up! What a relief when that message about the printhead being "unrecognized, not present, or not working" didn't come back after I restarted the computer! You saved me about $75.00 (probably more, since everybody is marking everything up now in the name of "inflation.") Thanks, Bro!

This worked for me! I just needed to get the correct screw drivers. Once I got them, it only took five minutes to get my printer up and running again. Thank you!!
Thank you for giving the size of the torx bit. I watched several other videos and your the only one that thought to share that critical info. Your right, not everyone has them any smaller then t9. Luckily, I was able to find a key set that had a t6 in it at Harbor Freight. After cleaning the printhead, my printer works again. Thanks again.
This worked for me! One of the springs jumped out onto the floor when I took the board off. After a few minutes of crawling around to find it, everything went back in and now it prints great again.
NEVER, EVER scrub gold contacts with an eraser. It may fix the problem for a while, but then the gold plating is porous (or removed) and will corrode more rapidly. Only use alcohol and a soft lint free cloth or Deoxit Gold G5 contact cleaner. Based upon 35 years experience in the computer industry.
Worked for me! Except... I used a little pipe cleaner thingy to clean as many contacts/areas as I could reach without having to unscrew the orinthead, since I didn't have the tools. I just got the areas/contacts on the inside perimeter, but those must have been it because it finally works. Thank you so much!
I did exactly as you instructed. It fixed the printer temporarily; The next morning I got the same error code that locked down all printer function. Had already ordered a new replacement printhead before I saw your video.... will arrive in a week. Luckily I have a backup printer. Thanks for the video
@@babagandu I could not get around the failed PrintHead. I tried cleaning all the contacts as showed in this video. Worked once but then went right back to error code and loss of all function. Ordered a new one (not reconditioned) and was up and running in a few days. The new Head did make me install all four "new" ink cartidges. Luckily I had replacements on the shelf; And I assume I can slip those back in once the "new" ones run out of ink.
Had same message and found one of the colour cartridges ink had dried up and was empty. After replacement fixed problem but would also suggest you clean the printer head by pulling out the unit after removing the cartridges and just use paper towel and hot water. Printer works like new.
Thank you so much. Worked on my first try (had to wait a day because I had to order the Torx bit from Amazon). Asked for paper and then calibrated the printhead.
Lucky I had a small set of torx bits....but hey, other then having to chase down a micro sized spring! this works and I'm just amazed and thankful!!! Took me about an hour though.....mainly chasing that spring!
So I have the 8620 with the same problem. No matter what I did I'd get the same error "not detected or faulty print head" This happened when I bought and installed brand new OEM color and black cartridges from HP! After doing a little research I unplugged the printer for ten minutes as recommended. This was suppose to clear the memory data of the ink cartridges. It didn't work. My printer is on my network so I found the printers I.P. address under Setup/Network Setup/Wireless settings/View Wireless Details. I then put the I.P. address into the browser on my computer. On that page click Settings/Preferences/Anonymous Usage Information Storage SET IT TO OFF ! ! ! I believe that solved the problem. The printer was evidently using online information from HP that would cause the Print Head/Cartridge error..... While you are on that page also turn off Preference/HP Cartridge Protection..... Additionally I believe to clear the Print Head or Cartridge data the line cord should be unplugged for hours. Not ten minutes. Hope this helps. Pass the info along.
Sadly here in Australia it did not fix my printhead. I thought that the above strategy by smithderf was quite clever and I did set my HP site to OFF. I hoped this would work but sadly it did not work. Even tho I am bitterly disappointed this error message came up on my screen [because it was working perfectly the day before] I guess I should not complain as I bought the unit in early 2014 so I have had 10,5 years of flawless service. It printed perfectly in colour and black and white. It did duplex double-sided printing and beautiful photos on gloss photo paper. But it is on its way now to the e-waste recycling centre. I bought a new Epson XP4200 one of the reasons being that it can use cheap generic compatible ink cartridges. For those who have HP printers you would be very aware that HP does not allow you to use generic compatible cartridges. HP has a "time-bomb" in the system so that exactly 4 weeks after inserting generic cheap cartridges the printer stops working completely with a message saying, "To continue printing remove all non-HP cartridges and replace with genuine HP cartridges". Even the ink on-line shop that sells me both original and compatible cartridges knew about this little annoying HP time-bomb. The sales lady at the on-line shop said to buy an Epson XP4200 as it does beautiful colour prints and does duplex and can use cheap compatible cartridges. So I immediately ordered one and it is on its way. And so this is the end of my HP relationship.
If you browse to the printers own website on your home network using it's ip address in a Web browser. It can give you a hint what the issue it. Mine was the magenta ink cartridge.
the same here. When I took off PCB from the print head, springs in the bottom row were literally corroded to the PCB contact plates. After cleaning them, all is working fine! But my error message was different.
Worked on cleaning off eletronics (mainly video game controlers for personal use) what works best is isopropyl alcohol with a toothbrush. The alcohol will be rough on anything that is messing with the contact points on the board while the toothbrush applies it thoroughly without putting too much force on the board
for cleaning the contacts on my canon camera lenses,i have been told more than once to use cotton headed swabs, and isopropyl alcohol, only as other things make wreak havooc on the coule of microns of coating on the contacts
Very helpful video, but unfortunately when I was able to inspect the contacts on my print head I found the springs had worn through some of the contacts to the PCB itself.
These are great instructions, and I had such hope when it asked me to insert a piece of paper and was aligning the printer. But after rebooting it, and trying to print, the same error message came up. Couldn't even get to utility to clean the printheads. But thanks for this. Really helpful, just wish it worked for my printer.
I have two HP 8610 printers. I had one show up with the missing or not detected printhead. I've used it a LOT and could understand if a part was worn out. However, the second is a bit newer and not used as much. It was my son's from his time in college. When he moved out he didn't need it so left it for us to use. I plugged it in to have a working printer and a couple of months later it has the same issue. I'm wondering if this is a fault from an upgrade? I cleaned the printhead and did some reset I found. It worked for a few prints and then failed again. I even bought a new printhead and tried it but it would not detect on either printer. Somethings not right here. :-( I keep forgetting to call HP to grill them about a possible issue with an update.
That was really useful, thank you. At my HP officejet 4622 has been that problem long time, and finally I fix it . I had to take aport but everything working 👍
Great tutorial. I initially was trying to clean the ink system. Now I am getting the not detected error. I ordered a replacement off ebay and a cleaning kit for this model. Is there a way to determine for sure if the printhead is dead or just needs more cleaning? I am also wondering if I could have damaged the connector between the main board and little board with the large springs?
I tried this on my 8600. It did not work. I then ordered a new print head, and it did not resolve the problem. I then took the printer apart, found a component on the main board had a burned hole in the center of the component. Did a lot of research and found the part description and number. It was one of the print head interface chips. Purchased a new part from a discrete component reseller from overseas, installed the part, I do not recommend doing this unless you have the training and equipment to replace surface mount components, reassembled the printer, and it worked with the old and new print head. Again, this is not a normal repair that just anyone can perform. I have years of experience repairing equipment with surface mount components including VLA, only because I have the equipment to do it with. The cost of the component was not that much, but the labor time made it cheaper to purchase a new printer.
I gave up trying to get it to work, I bought an Epson ET-2850 printer. The printer served it purpose but I will never buy another HP printer unless it is a Tank Printer and a real good price.
For my HP Photosmart 7525. I didn't even need to clean. I just tried taking the print heads out, but it wouldn't come out. So I just closed everything and it worked.
bro, thank you so much for your explanation this resolved my issue right away. I believe my issue was the actual ink head it was full of ink I wiped a few times like you did in the video and it worked.
Nice video... didn't work for me but I'm assuming HP has sunk my attempts to circumvent their consumables profit. One suggestion, flipping the springs may help if they've corroded on the other side (the one you can't see). By flipping them you eliminate that possibility. Just a thought. Would love a link to some kick booty contact cleaner.. just saying. :) Again, great job on the video. Cheers.
We have an HP Officejet Pro 7740. The yellow catridge prints black. We've tried this with an HP and HP compatible cartridges to no avail. We have now used the head cleaner and ran it twice. Problem remains. Do we need to be a new prinhead?
Possibly. This is not a guaranteed fix for every printer. The board can go bad as well. You may need to replace the print head. They are about $50 used on ebay
I have the same model, today I bought a non-hp cartridge, it turns on and then turns off suddenly, I haven't used the printer for several months. can someone help me what is the problem? Thank you!
So, question. I have a 8720. I've bought a new printhead, new ink cartidges and no, not HP ones...I've went through all the cleaning techniques. I found pressing once above the question mark, once below and then twice above brings up a factory menu. I've reset it...which then messes up because of the print head error. I really hate to junk a printer that has had minimal use as it's a home printer...but in the end is this actually fixable?
@@CraigsExpertTips apparently. I know it's a HP scam to get ppl to buy new products. I have messed with the printhead trying different suggestions and it will give a different message like it's going to work...and then go back to the error. All HP support says is buy a new printer. I just set it to MFG mode to make the print error disappear so I'll use it for everything but printing...and bought an Epson printer. Those last way longer than HP anyways.
I have tried all the tips and suggestions and still can not get mine to print, printer head is still not detected. I don't want to buy a new printer but it is a 140 dollars for a new head and ink, new printer is 150. Has anyone figured out the real cause and fix for this?
At the moment of typing this I'm not sure yet about the solution. But just letting people know I was able to get the screws off with some needle nose pliers.
I think thats what an 8600 of 8610 or 8620 is worth when its giving this message and useless is about $10 dollars. But unfortunately I didn't know all that and gave $50. I've learned a few things of what to try and what not to. I tried a reset to see if it would make the missing print head go away. I think with the partial reset I could get into the rest of the icons if i wanted to scan or something, But i still couldn't print as it would give the same message. I think I did the full reset and that halted everything as the menu could not be brought up any more. couldn't go past the message. The thing is that was even worse. If I wanted to pull the printhead. I couldn't now, because the the head wouldn't move over to the left when opening the print door. So here I was Locked on that message missing print head. nothing else in the menu would come up & the carriage wouldn't move left to work on it. So I pulled the wrong end panel off as I thought the green pcb board was on the right hand side like the 8500. they switched sides. So I pulled the end panel off the (left hand side) . I was looking for leverage to turn that shaft, that goes all the way across. And on the (printed circuit board) end I found it. There 's a white plastic gear on it. But it was to hard to reach, so I put a vice grip on the end of the shaft ( sticks out plenty far enough). One direction it wouldn't really turn, "hardley at all", (DON'T FORCE IT) but the other direction it did. So I turned it ( not knowing what I'm doing) and turned it some more . I was trying to see if the carriage would move. I didn't see anything. So I took the vice grip off. But!!!!!! When I reached my hand in there like, I did, several other times before. to tug on it a little, to see if it would come away from the far right. ONLY THIS TIME IT DID! So now it's back to the LHS where I can, "get it out of there", and try this method with either alchol and cue tip. or the eraser. And now with the head over Finally. I could also order a ebay new head, If I decide too.
I will never buy HP again, greedy woke company. First, I did all of this it didn’t work, however someone mentioned it was intentional and if I unplugged for a while the message would disappear, and so I did. When I turned it back on, I could print the report page quickly before the message appears without any issues, which suggests the printer head works fine, I think HP has built in this common issue and don’t want you to fix it but instead buy a new printer.

Possibly. This is not a guaranteed fix for every printer. The board can go bad as well. You may need to replace the print head. They are about $50 used on ebay
I have the 6700 Premium model. Will this video work for mine?
I think it is definitely worth a try. Majority of this style printer has a carriage that holds the print head.
Thank you for the detail video n instructions but my printer still doesn’t detect printhead
This is not a guaranteed solution. I has worked for a lot of people. You may have another issue that is causing it to not be detected
Thank you sir. I did everything you said in the video but it did not fix my issue. Thank you anyway
I have the same model, today I bought a non-hp cartridge, it turns on and then turns off suddenly, I haven't used the printer for several months. can someone help me what is the problem? Thank you!
Some models (and this may be one check for non-hp cartridges). I have always used HP ones
So, question. I have a 8720. I've bought a new printhead, new ink cartidges and no, not HP ones...I've went through all the cleaning techniques. I found pressing once above the question mark, once below and then twice above brings up a factory menu. I've reset it...which then messes up because of the print head error. I really hate to junk a printer that has had minimal use as it's a home printer...but in the end is this actually fixable?
it is a case by base basis.
8740 just started doing this. It’s definitely not a hardware issue…
So when I opened it up I realized one of those tiny springs was snapped, any idea what spring I should buy to replace it?
I am not sure. I have not had to replace one yet.
Do you have a link for the $50 Printhead? I can't find that price anywhere
Which model printer do you have?
I build circuit boards, you can use alcohol to clean the contacts.
Thank you!! This worked!!!! So happy❤🎉
So glad!
I tried this and it didn't work. I bought a new print head and it still says print head is missing. Is there something else I can try to do?
Sorry to hear that. Could be the contacts where the print head is seated. Also I think there are some leads behind it as well.
Fantastic! Thank you very much!
I assume this fixed your printer?
Yes, it did.
Great to hear!
Great tip. So far so good. Thank you!
great to hear it was helpful
Thank you! I had high hopes and it did not work for me.
Thank you very much! At least in my case it worked great. My HP OfficeJet Pro 8620 is printing again.
Great to hear!
I have tried all the tips and suggestions and still can not get mine to print, printer head is still not detected. I don't want to buy a new printer but it is a 140 dollars for a new head and ink, new printer is 150. Has anyone figured out the real cause and fix for this?
This is just one possible fix. If you read other comments this has solved the issue on multiple occasions.

Yes, you are right, it has helped others, it was worth a try. Thanks for helping others.
Hi quick question. It's possible to convert this printer in DTF printer.?? Thank you
At the moment of typing this I'm not sure yet about the solution. But just letting people know I was able to get the screws off with some needle nose pliers.
Thank a lot. It did work. I just cleaned outside connectors only.
I had a problem with my printer which printed blank paper. I replaced the print head. It’s working fine
That’s good to hear
Does not come out the same for a 6600 series, which looks about the same as your printer. No gray bar to lift up.
Yes, T6 is the right size!
Thanks for watching. Hopefully this video helped
Hi Dear, can you give a detail model of your screw driver? Many thanks!
I am not sure if the exact model but I mentioned in the video what size it needed to be
@@CraigsExpertTips Thank you. I heard it’s a T6. But not sure the head is flat, star or something else.
@@marinetao9147 it's the star looking one
I did the whole process and changed the inks and it didn't work out. Help!
Thank you. This isn’t a guaranteed solution but works for some. Thanks for watching

Good to hear!

Yes sir, it worked for me! Thank You.
Glad it helped

What do you mean? There is a paper tray
Print head will not move to the left...help please...HP 8610
Thanks
so when you open the front of the printer the print head does not move?
@@CraigsExpertTips I gave up on it, and tossed it...life goes on thanks!
worked thanks 100!!!!
Great to hear
best video. thanks !
If this makes my dumpster printer work, I owe you a beer
Hopefully this helped
Do these printers have Bluetooth?
I do not believe that this model supports Bluetooth
I think thats what an 8600 of 8610 or 8620 is worth when its giving this message and useless is about $10 dollars. But unfortunately
I didn't know all that and gave $50. I've learned a few things of what to try and what not to. I tried a reset to see if it would make the missing print head go away. I think with the partial reset I could get into the rest of the icons if i wanted to scan or something,
But i still couldn't print as it would give the same message.
And on
the (printed circuit board) end I found it.
Thank you brother trying this know with my printer
Did it work?
opened mine up and only 3 springs are here..wtf
nevermind... found them. My cats took them and were playing with them in the kitchen..
Your error still did not clear...?
this is not a guaranteed solution but an option to try.
Thank you! Worked for me.
Sometimes I use WD 40 to clean the contacts
That’s a great idea
Haha it worked thank you!!
That’s good to hear! Glad I could help you!
Thank you. it worked
Glad my video helped you resolve your issue!
Thanks!
You bet! Thank you for the $
I will never buy HP again, greedy woke company.
7:02 HP instructions say "gently" push
Bro, I have the 6700….there is no lever
I think I have one of those as well it’s much harder to remove snd replace
this should be a class action lawsuit against HP. absolutely ridiculous!!
It didn't solve my problem 😔😩
Thank you. This isn’t a guaranteed solution but works for some. Thanks for watching
Try updating the firmware, it worked for me
Does this guy not sound somewhat like Matthew McConaughey?!?! LOL! Gotta be from Texas.
