thing is, separation anxiety is a very common debuff in dogs that can cause a lot of trouble for their human, particularly humans that don't spend a lot of time at their base. cats are more independent in nature so you rarely see this debuff at all in them. cats are also excellent at hunting down insects that have found their way into a human's base, which is very useful seeing as humans are very easily intimidated by even harmless insects.

  • @LauraSti
    @LauraSti 2 года назад +408

What about the cat's "purr" ability? They use it to maintain muscle tone with a sedentary lifestyle, and they can also use it to assist their human allies when they have major debuffs such as injuries. Cats have different "purr" styles for different injury types too. They have a "bone purr" ability which increases tick speed on the debuff, allowing it to count down faster. The same goes for other injury-type debuffs, and don't forget the cat's role in pest control.
Selling the cat class short is all I'm saying. That "purr" ability might just be the strongest single support ability in the game, besides the "cute" ability.

Toxoplasmosis is only slightly true, what really helped the domestic cat soar into S tier is when humans unlocked the farming skill. All that experience and loot attracted a ton of low level players like rats. Which gave cats a ton of players to grief on. A ton of human players also prefer that the cat isn't as much of a support class as a dog. With a dog you need to learn how to play as a team, with cats they take care of themselves and do their own thing.
In other words, a dog would be a healer, war monk, or paladin type of support class while cats play more assassin support roles like Bards or Tricksters.

You forgot to mention their passive healing ability: Purr. It actually promote healthy bones, and the pest control aspect, which puts them as a good companion, just in a different way than dogs. Toxoplasmosis is more common in Outdoor and Stray cats, and while human infection rates are high, they don't suddenly make humans like cats.
    The Stray
Stray is almost a complete no go, and most are forced into it due to a bad spawn or human kicking them out of the party. You're playthrough usually only lasts a few levels, since you have 0 medical care, unless you are taken in by a Human.
    The Outdoor
While the outside cat build looks tempting because of the mixed, it's not very good, since your average run is only a about 2-5 levels, and depending on the exact human-made biome, that could be lower or higher. High traffic areas could end your run early, especially if you're caught by a Animal Control Human, which for most, is a guaranteed game over. The medical care helps, and some really lucky playthroughs could go all the way to the max level for cats, but that is more of an exception and if its your choice of outdoor or indoor, you should always choose indoor.
There is some exceptions, like pest control on farms, which uses your natural stealth assassin skills to hunt rodent players. Low traffic and large territory means you're lifespan is typically higher, but because Veteranary Humans are farther away, immediate medical attention required incidents are more likely to end you're playthrough, however they are rarer.
    The Indoor
This is the premier build. It's passive farming, with little need if you can put up with humans, and even then you may not need to. You have almost completely guaranteed protection at all times without needing to work at all. Indoor cats are relatively low maintenance compared to dogs, and are available in far more human areas than dogs. Example being apartments, which are detrimental to even medium sized dog players, but are perfectly fine for cats. Plus on average, you're increasing your average run to 10-max level.
I currently have a cat player in my party, whose level isn't exactly known. She's around 8-10 according to the our local Vet Human. She suffers from a skin condition annually, which causes her to scratch to the point of cutting herself.
She was originally a stray for her first couple of levels, where a Human found and helped her, turning her into an Outdoor cat for another few. Those logs are muddled, but when she continued her run with us, she was suffering from her untreated skin condition, flea players, and was completely covered in injuries. Based on her previous logs, we decided to change her playstyle to indoor, and now she is thriving with constant care. She loves the free loot and mutual buffs. She already broke the Stray and Outdoor playthrough averages by a mile, and we hope her playthrough never ends.

    • @seraphina985

Sounds like they were probably actually a stray which means that they almost certainly were socialised during the critical period as kittens and then got abandoned or ran away. A genuinely feral adult cat that has never been socialised will rarely let any human get close enough to try and socialise them much less find the attempt to do so a positive experience that builds trust rather than a scary event that reinforces their existing aversion.

Eh, the effectiveness of Toxoplasma as an ability is still being debated. I would argue that the reason cat players are so strongly preferred by a portion of the human playerbase is that they present the same morale boost as dogs with significantly less investment in time and XP to level them up. They also work well in smaller spaces, which is an advantage in the increasingly popular city servers. Since many human players don't need higher level dog perks in the current meta, they can save valuable resources opting to partner with cats instead. Of course, which is better for an individual human player is ultimately up to their playstyle.

From there the cat player was able to move to the inside class though some players still prefer to stick with the outside class as many find the inside class pretty boring.

Hey TierZoo, cool channel and awesome concept! I was really looking forward for this video after seeing The Cat Tier List, but was left a bit puzzled after watching it. To get straight to the point that bothered me, this one in particular felt like a serious disservice to f. catus and a strange shift from what so far have been a very entertaining and informative journey. I absolutely love dogs, and agree with everything you said about our canine companions, but was quite perplexed about why you left out some very important patch notes about our feline friends, their presence in history, and their contribution to the development of our civilization.
Unlike our amazing canine friends who often get (most of) the credit they deserve, cats have been (and still are) getting a bad rep for centuries, and very unjustly so. So in defense of our feline friends, I’d like to mention a few patch notes.
I'll start with the "spookiest" part which usually has the most controversy surrounding it - T. Gondii. First thing first, It's important to note that most humans are far more likely to contract T. Gondii from eating raw meat or unwashed fruits and vegetables than getting it from a cat (assuming you don’t eat cat poop or touch it with your bare hands, and / or don't wash your hands before you eat).
Secondly, the "Bold and Brash" debuff in fact does NOT work on humans in the same way it works on rodents, and will ONLY proc on a rodent spec that comes in contact with an armed Toxo Dookie Trap. This type of trap is only spawned by a cat for a duration of 1 to 3 weeks following infection with T. Gondii and is NOT permanent (a cat needs to be infected via rodent / bird consumption to be able to spread the parasite, so if your cat is an indoor cat the chances of it contracting and spreading the parasite are quite low). What's more, the effects on humans are widely debated if existent at all, because T. Gondii has been so far assumed asymptomatic except in cases of individuals with deficient immune systems or in cases of spawning with it (if you wish you can also check out the CDC's FAQ about T. Gondii on their website, it's quite informative without being overwhelming).
As a cat main, I was surprised to see no mention of the contribution domestic cats had made to early agricultural societies who utilized the cat’s epic "Vermin Control" skill (a job many cat companions hold till’ this very day), cats kept rodents away from our granaries, as a result humans were able to store large quantities of food, which lead to more people being able to settle in one place, who in turn built stronger and longer lasting homes, creating security and eventually civilization.
The whole ancient Egypt cat worshipping practice started because of the cat's ability to kill venomous pests like snakes and scorpions (which cats also do till' this very day, thanks Kitsu!). It had also been speculated that cats have a secret buff, "Song of Bastet", the purr - resonating in a consistent pattern in frequencies between 25 and 150 Hertz, which according to various investigators had shown to improve bone density and promote healing.
The last one may not have been researched thoroughly enough to be considered a fact, but I personally appreciate the purr’s calming effect and its +50 to relaxation and good spirit buff!
I think the most amazing thing about cats is the fact that they were never truly domesticated, Unlike dogs that have been shaped by tens of thousands of years of selective breeding in order to achieve traits desired by us humans, not to mention having a good starter social core humans could work to begin with, the solitary cat had moved from the deserts and jungles into our homes with barely any intervention on our part. Cat breeding is a relatively new practice, so as a result cats had retained most of their wild traits and basically adapted to living with us humans, our other pets/farm animals, and even each other in the wild.
This brings me to another important yet little known patch note about f. Catus, differently from their wild ancestors, domestic cats are actually quite social and require social interaction for a healthy wellbeing!
Domestic cats even form matriarchal colonies in which they live together and help one another in tasks like taking care of each other’s kittens, and providing food for the colony. Unlike lions though, domestic cats have no pack mentality nor do they develop any social strategy, so each member hunts individually and contributes on their own, which I personally think is a wonderful demonstration of how adaptive and unique this animal is.
Despite remaining widely misunderstood by most of us. Cats have highly individual and different personalities, and most of them bond very deeply with their humans. Each cat also learns to communicate with their human individually, even the all familiar “meow” is not as obvious as we think. Each cat learns to use this skill - which is essentially a kitten’s cry to its mother (and as it turns out is also very effective in getting our attention) - with their human, either on their own or by observing other cats, creating a communication system that is custom tailored to their human.
I personally love how cats, despite being solitary animals, were able to form meaningful relationships with us not because they were genetically conditioned and shaped to do so, but because they chose to.
Lastly, I'm gonna suggest that if you're using Wikipedia as your main source of info, look more into citations and sources, and check out some academic papers on sites like NCBI - NIH and CDC rather than relying on info scratched from the (ever changing) surface of Wikipedia. I enjoyed your other videos so please don't take this the wrong way, but as an educator you have a certain responsibility when spreading information (or avoiding misinformation), I know making these videos is a great effort (and result), keep your research thorough and keep on the great job!
Side note: I wrote this like 2+ years ago, then some stuff happened that made me forget all about it until discovering it again while cleaning my drive folder today. Apologies for the belated (and possibly somewhat irrelevant by now) comment, but hey, better late than never.

Love your comment! I agree that cats are often misunderstood and sometimes even vilified (perhaps a remnant from the middle ages). It's also unfortunate that some folks feel entitled to touch an animal at any time they feel like it, and call it an 'asshole' just because it want's some time for itself. Cats aren't mean just because they still have their own will.

You forgot to add all of the negatives of adding a dog as a support. Once you add a dog, it is a heavy multi-daily commitment of feeding & "walking", plus bathing. Essentially adding the dog as a support is also adding yourself as a support character at the same time.
The cat comes with the "independence" trait; which includes being able to leave as much food out for it in advance as needed, the super advanced litterbox perk, and the self-cleaning buff.
While you may try to argue that the cat doesn't have as many support traits as the dog, the cat doesn't require you to spec yourself into support yourself to choose it.

Sounds more like a bypoduct of the assumptions those who party with cats make. Cats can absolutely be trained to come when you call, if you always make it in their best interest to follow your commands--those who party with dogs but don't spend enough time maintaining the Homeward Bound buff will find that their dog won't come when called.
Oftentimes human mains just assume their cat party member can't be trained, so they don't try. Don't get me wrong, getting the Homward Bound buff to even activate isn't as easy with a dog, but the same principals apply. if you always make sure to reward your team member as soon as you do what you asked (even if it was an accident), your partymate will want to do that more often

Some major oversights I'd like to point out: cats have a higher level cap. You can work on honing a cat's support skillset for a longer period of time before having to get a new one and level it up from its base build all over again. Additionally, when playing on Hard Mode (impoverished PC, lower GP accrual rate) and you have to live in a dungeon with a DM rather than a base run by the PC, DMs often invoke a No Support Class Debuff, but cats have a much easier time bypassing this debuff than dogs because of their stealth abilities.

Like you mentioned, outdoor cats playthroughs have benefits with support aide from human players as well as freedom to explore the map. I think this CATagory of domestic cats would be especially good to mention when discussing the benefits of playing a cat build. Indoor cats, though less reclusive and a more loving to their human supports, are weaker when fighting, and the opposite with strays, who are sadly neglected and often suffering some sort of hp loss. Dogs on the other hand, despite being one of the most loyal builds in the game, don’t possess this ability at all, meaning if they ever escape the bases humans make for them, they will likely become strays without the help of a kind human, which can often lead to a Game Over!

I have gathered info from many different sources, including Radiolab.

  • @kridocaign5722

Humans have a resistance to toxoplasmosis. It can't establish itself inside a human unless they're affected with a strong immune system debuff, and leaves no lasting changes.Further, cats don't trigger the fear effect in humans. Even if toxoplasmosis was viable against humans it still wouldn't give cats any affection bonus
The real reason cats became a top-tier support class is that they're a hard counter to birds and rodents specced into thief or plaguebearer builds. Human settlements with cat supports didn't have to worry so much about birds eating crops or rodents eating stored grain.

@KridOCaign that explanation works if the cat players simply occupy the same space as the humans, but the active “alliance” between them (ie, humans giving cats free XP and safe spawn points) essentially destroy any need the cat players might have to grind XP for themselves, thus the rodent pests in the same vicinity go unchecked because although there are stray/outside cats everywhere, they are in no danger of being eaten because the cats are already full. The only time cats actually work as a pest control method under these circumstances is when the cat mains themselves get so bored that they end up hunting for sport and then offer the elim to their human party members as payment for the free XP and personal sleeping quarters, but it doesn’t happen nearly enough to be of notable benefit in an area with a highly active rodent player base. The end result is that the human ends up burning the candle on both ends by not only carrying the cat main, but also has to deal with the rodents with traps and poisons because the cat isn’t doing its job.

Did you know that cats will purr to try to make themselves feel better? When a cat purrs, it releases endorphins within its brain. These endorphins are hormones that cause feelings of happiness, sociability, affection, excitement, and much more.
Studies show that not only does the cat’s purr release endorphins within themselves but also in humans. This can decrease stress levels, assist with coping through an illness, and even lower blood pressure, there’s also many studies showing that if a cat purrs on you while you’re feeling down or sad, they are trying to heal you and make you feel better. So if a cat does that to you keep doing what you’re doing because they truly love you.

while i acknowledge that dogs have higher skill ceiling as a support paired with human, they also require more resources. Most of the dog players spent so many points in support skills that their own survivability is F tier and completely depend on the human to share loot. Cats have a much lower investment floor for the human player to pair with, since as you said, they're not really a support, they rather form a pact with human as their kits synergize really well. Historically, their pest control ability is part of what snowballed the human power level in certain servers.

As part of their stealth abilities, cats have access to self cleaning and waste burial, this makes upkeep costs in terms of time for their human partners extremely low allowing them to access the “good boy” trait for much less work than a dog that requires baths, walks, trips outside to handle waste, and the occasional cleaning accidental waste inside. Also, again because of their stealth based skill set, cats are generally quieter and more peaceful than dogs who will sometimes negate their entire “good boy” trait by using “Bark at nothing.”

Wait, wait. Cats also have the ability called: "Purr", which has a healing bonus effect on human players. Most (all cats have different personalities) cat builds require less assistance/involvement from their party members, and can do a lot on their own, calling to them only when needed. (Their human teammates still must give them a lot of attention and love on their own nonetheless). While dog mains need constant movement and help of their team for the most essential of things. The "walk at 3 am in the middle of winter" quests are a tiebreaker to me.
Cats are great companions to human builds with lower energy output.

My main currently has a dog support and two cat supports. The dog support is VITAL for getting her through things like other human players, but the cat supports actually have proven very useful too. The passive buff Purr has helped combat her numerous debuffs from the Abusive Family start, and the two cat supports she has have learned to mitigate their Claw usage enough to allow Snuggle interactions, including the Belly Rub interaction, typically reserved for dog supports.

I hope your main's situation has improved since this game log. It's definitely a difficult start condition... It can be escaped, even utilised for greater empathy bonuses and resilience if the long-term status debuffs can be mitigated, but no-one could ever call it easy. Humans may be OP, but the intra-hominid meta can be sadly very challenging for individual players if one ends up with a toxic group. That doesn't mean that there's no hope, however! You're already making exceptional support plays, after all.
      You can do this.

This does have a minor downside if the cat is using Nap with a Human executing the Lap move. Minor damage can result if the Nap is terminated by the Noise environmental hazard or if the Human executes a Sneeze move.

      1) Explore early; roads and paths double your movement speed.
      2) While you're going to need a steady supply of wood, twigs, and grass, food is the biggest initial concern. Finding a Savannah biome (yellow) with Beefallo or a pig village will give you easy sources of poop (feed non-meat to pigs to get it), which in turn lets you make farms and relocate grass tufts and berry bushes.
      3) You will need at least a few pieces of gold to make your science machines. Look for a rockyland biome where ore is found or a graveyard where you'll find some lying around or able to be dug up. Generic gravedigger items and meat can also be offered to a Pig King for gold.
      4) Build a backpack; it helps.
      5) Build a crockpot, learn to cook. It's the most important structure in the game.
      6) Have a stone firepit. It's useful.
      7) The wolves will first hit around Day 9; you'll be warned by growling noises and a line like "did you hear that?" from your character. Either get yourself a spear and some wood armor and learn to kite them or lure them into critters that will do your job for you like Beefallo. Later attacks get bigger and come more frequently and with less warning.
      8) For winter, use a heat stone and warm clothing to survive the temperature. Store what food you can. A caged bird can produce eggs from meat, including fire-cooked monster meat, which satisfies numerous recipes.
      9) Don't starve.

I think you glossed over the cats "Pest Control" ability, which led to them allying with Human players in the first place. The history of the domestic cat build can be traced back to a long gone patch in the Egyptian server, where this allience first developed when the humans increasingly skilled their "Sessile" and "Agriculture" abilities. Rodent players were abusing these strats in a highly parasitic manner, which was then subsequently curbed by the cats.
This relationship later transformed with increasing levels of domestication. Many of the negatively attributed kills on weaker builds involve builds that are generally considered to be parasitic or pests in the city and suburban servers (E.g. Rat and Pidgeon mains) , although granted some builds outside this classification may also suffer collateral damage.

Props to cats for that but that stuff took place during a different patch and doesn’t have bearing on their effectiveness as support builds in the current update. A support class needs more than resting on its laurels. Today “pest control” is the short way of saying “devastating populations of birds and small mammals causing severe damage to the ecosystems their introduced to”. I’m not saying this to hate on cats but I think dogs have a lot more to offer as a support build in the current meta.

Dogs can also spec into tricks that greatly boost their stats. The current dog build in my server is a mix between the Scottish Terrier and the mini poodle, and his current level is about 9-10 months. He has a near-limitless amount of energy, can pull with a force equaling up to five times his own weight (he's like 20-21 pounds as of posting this), is very vocal, and super fluffy. This last perk boosts his already-overpowered ability to negate mental debuffs in nearby players. He also likes it when I hold him in a hug, giving me the "Calm Mind" status effect until I have to let him go.

Dog's AoE Morale Boost is called "Good Boy", I think the Cat's AoE Morale Boost is called "Purr". There are some cats that do upgrade to specialty tasks such as "Mouser" or "Snuggler". • @GhengisJohn

First of all Toxoplasmosis only effects a mammal player's reaction to the smell of cat urine. It doesn't effect a human's impression when they look at a cat, or a picture of a cat which has more to do with their large heads and forward facing eyes than anything else. It is a scapegoat, at this point really a meme, which I have heard parroted by salty dog mains over and over again on the forums as the only explanation they'll accept to the fact that cat memes outnumber dog memes on the internet 10 to 1. Secondly, not ONE mention of the purring status effect and it's proven connection to lower blood pressure, decrease heart disease and negate the stress debuff!
Given that it's been linked to the healing of soft tissues, bones, lowering the risk of heart attacks and improving the ability to fight off infections it's one of the few AOE heals naturally available in the game, and yet TierZoo has the nerve to suggest that cats are not a support class! This is to say nothing of how their rodent catching (which is depicted here solely as a negative) has helped the farmer prestige class and helped shut down plague players by knocking down their host numbers where it matters most, _near human spawn points._
Too great of a deal is also made over the usefulness of dogs in this video. While it's true that they _can_ be used to find loot and negate the blindness debuff, due to their slow talent acquisition and the sheer amount of grinding that it takes for them to attain a prestige class few dog players ever develop past the level where they acquire the "bark at strangers" and "shit in the yard" skills. This is to say nothing of the sheer amount of troll builds that exist for dogs such as chihuahuas who for reasons most of us will never be able to fathom, place most of their points into expanding their hatred resource pool and their tremble ability.
I would also like to add that as a support class for humans, new dog players have to learn the "housebroken" trait where as cats begin the game with the "use a litterbox" quest. This video shows a plain bias and sadly TierZoo doesn't know what he's talking about. It is always hard to say that when you see a bad video by a pro who's opinion that you normally respect.

    • @GhengisJohn

As a somewhat serious aside, all of this is to say nothing of the fact that dogs have and do, in certain places of the world pose just as much a threat to native ecosystems as cats ever have and a legitimate threat to the health and safety of humans. A wild dog might kill a man, a wild cat, might not let you pet it.

Can we also talk about how the current meta wouldn't even exist without cat players?
When the agriculture skill tree was introduced and human players began using Pack Tactics to raise crops instead of hunt, millions of rodent players saw an easy way to steal XP from human players. The Storage Banks that the humans had for their loot were little more than a few walls with a door, as proper locked chests had yet to be added to the game, and rodent players could easily slip through cracks in the walls and take what they wanted.
A few enterprising cat players saw an opportunity here and offered to ally with the humans. The cats would use their expert assassin skills to keep the rodent players out, and in return, the humans would provide shelter. This alliance between cats and humans had just as much impact on the meta as the dog-human alliance had. The dogs continued to protect the humans while they went questing, while the cats guarded the humans' loot. This allowed more humans to go questing, which allowed the Agriculture Meta to flourish.
Even today, after several patches which brought about the Medieval Meta, the Renaissance Meta, and the Industrial Meta, the Information Meta we are currently in still needs cat players to function properly. All those billions of kills that cat players score every year allow humans to grow crops without rodent players eating it all.
I recommend this video if you want to see how crucial cat players are to the current meta: ruclips.net/video/gqOzTh2pjEw/видео.html

Okay, here's the lowdown on the relationship between cats and humans:
Cats are the nature's pest control, and self-sufficient to boot. Back in the old days, farmer could take a cat, plop it down in the middle of their field, then walk off fully confident that their rodent problem is dealt with. A sailor can leave a cat on a ship, and they won't have to worry about rats anymore. A hotel can let a cat prowl through their rooms, and it'll clean up all the little roaches, bugs, and mice that would normally bother residents. This is especially true since cats will kill things even when they aren't hungry. Cats will just kill, and kill, and kill, and kill, until all the crop-eating pests in its territory are gone.
Even nowadays, many farms keep a colony of cats around because it's a heck of a lot cheaper than hiring exterminators, and longer-lasting instead of happening only once a visit. They'll still use exterminators of course, but much less frequently since the problems are a lot easier to contain.
Cat's *could've* held the black plague in check by killing off the mice (and mice fleas) that were transmitting it, except the dumb peasants back then blamed cats for spreading the plague and killed them off instead. As a result, rodent populations exploded and lots of people died.
So, yes, cats were extremely important to human civilization. By controlling pests, they helped humans to maximize crop gains, and minimized the spread of diseases. They don't do anything else because we've never needed them to do anything else, since the one thing they're already perfectly specced for is extremely important already. And now you know why ancient Egypt worshiped the little genocide engines.
Give the little furballs some credit. They aren't the freeloaders everyone thinks they are. Unless, that is, your house is already pest-free and you keep them indoors anyways.

Some human players use cat players to help out with depression traits. Cats are much more relaxed than dogs, so if human players just want some company that is adorable and fluffy without being so playful and jump on you, cats are generally the meta. Plus, most human players just use spider players to deal with pests.

Humans and a lot of Dogs have a rather special shared ability when partnered up. "I'll Protect You" is a buff that is applied if another player attempts to attack or run an intimidate check on the Human or Dog player, where the other player will instantly hard-aggro onto the attacking player. Human players have been known to power through even harsh intimidation checks and, even unarmed, attacking builds FAR outside their weight class if their partnered Dog player is threatened.
Human and Dog players absolutely cannot stand seeing their partner be attacked and fighting off both is extremely challenging. It's extra risky because if the human player has a high-level weapon craft on them attacking their partnered dog player is one of the fastest ways any build can wind up on a attack from it. When human players might seem to be unaggressive they can often become downright merciless in this scenario. Don't be a player foolish enough to attack a Human/Dog combo.
