As always, I’m so grateful for these videos. I don’t have as much time for trial and error in my painting as I’d like, so the time I save by learning from you is invaluable. I hope one day you have a Dru Blair style school where some of us can go even deeper into learning!

Thank you Mark. I'm a fan of your portrait work. It is very inspirational to watch your detail come together. The depth you achieve is fantastic and learning anatomy is an added bonus. I look forward to your tutorials and appreciate all your content. Thanks for the lessons

Thanks so much, but I'm no master. Just someone who tries to paint and learns every day. I'm very glad that you like these videos though! The masters are the ones that we all try to learn from- Raphael, Caravaggio, Velasquez, Ingres, Bouguereau, Sargent, and so many more.
@@theartworkshopYou're welcome, Mark! ... and thank you for your kind words! I hopefully will be posting more videos soon. Thanks so much Mehmet. I've been loving the Schmincke line and will be ordering a few of the larger bottles. I don't know why these paints are so hard to get here in the US, because they are awesome.

Amazing well done Mark nice to see you using other paint/ink it's very difficult to get airbrush paint in south Africa nice to learn about inks ect well done keep up the good work cheers Trev 🍻
Thanks so much Trev! I know that this ink is very popular in the UK and Europe, but it's very rare here in the US. What kind of paints are easily available to you in South Africa?
Hi Mark I used to use the dala sun color, more like a ink, but the problem is I could not get white. If you have a lot of patience you can get the createx color's which I ordered through Amazon it took one and a half years to finally reach me 😅but all good keep up the good work and thank you for helping us 👍 amazing cheers 🍻

Sure you are, Dean! Don't ever think you don't have the skills for a painting like this. You can paint like this or better by just sticking to it. Plenty of mistakes will be made. And I make more mistakes than you can imagine, but that's how we learn. If you need any help, you just let me know!

Also using Schminke paints and im very pleased, they erase from Fabriano 140 lbs smooth paper and also Arches 140 lbs hot pressed. Nice tutorial Mark, i rushed from work when i got the notification on the video😂
Ah good old Fabriano Artistico- one of the greatest papers on the planet! It's the only brand I'll use other than Arches for my drawings. Those hot pressed watercolor papers are incredible but worth every penny. I've yet to try this paint directly on Fabriano but I have a block of their paper that I'll test it out on. Do you prep it at all or paint directly on it? Thanks Allan.
Thanks so much! Both a very good paints. So far the Schmincke inks remind me a bit of com-art colors which I loved and used for many years. Way too early for me to decide if I prefer these over the illustration line, but it's fun to switch up paints for a while.
I am a tattoo artist, i work specially with black and grey realism and this video is just perfect. I have watched many of your videos in the past few days and I am really excited to start my journey on airbrush. That being said i have a question, could I get a result as good as this in hard surfaces such as an automotive panel? I ask because i see you have a special use of erasers. And thanks for sharing such valuable knowledge!
@@nicomarrez Two INCREDIBLE airbrushes imo. Honestly that is all you'll ever need- great choices! Yes, you can absolutely use these techniques on different surfaces like automotive panels. Each surface will require different pressure for removing paint. Something you just have to experiment with until your comfortable. I stick with gessoed surfaces like canvas, panel, or cotton paper so that it's basically all the same feeling and techniques. Just makes it easier for me. Hope this helps!
Welcome! I hope you pick up some tips to use in your own work. All the photo references for the studies (like this one) on the channel are from adobe stock. So if you have an account with them, you can download them there.
I usually use a grid, but on this on I just traced the outlines from a large print out. It's a simple method. If you look at my eye tutorial from a few weeks back I go over the technique I used.
Would it be easier if you use the start out color over the whole face, And then switch to the next color and do the whole face. In this way, you would not have to switch colors in the air brush pin so much.
That is how I used to paint with an airbrush. I did it that way for many years. I found the odd color shifts difficult to manage when spraying opaque colors to lighten areas. It's also difficult to get a specular highlight as bring as paper or gesso with an airbrush, since layers are sprayed so thinly. I do still use a technique like that for oil painting and traditional paint brushes.
@theartworkshop that was deep. Really your way is better to prevent mistakes of too dark. You can work that section at a time. I just better make sure I have premixed paint to match all of the face. but I see your logic. I'm try your method on a black and white portrait today. Thank you so much
@@keviin20061 happy to help! I'm going to follow this one up with a monochrome painting only using transparent black, just to show the differences. Prob in a month or so

Titanium white is a very cool white, but that cooler color shift is most apparent when the white is sprayed over darker colors.
