Painting PORTRAITS in Black & White | Tutorial Part 2

PART 2!! Painting portraits in monochrome is a great exercise in value study. Since there are no colors used besides black and white, you get to focus all of your attention on values and how they mold and sculpt the structures of the face. In this second part we will be painting the mouth, the neck and adding in the skin tones around the jaw and cheek. You will notice in this portrait that the black and white mixtures gives this overall painting a cooler temperature than one completed in just transparent black. I will follow this tutorial up with another grisaille just using a transparent black so that you can see the difference between the two techniques. This painting is a 24x18" canvas stretched over a wooden panel, prepared smooth with liquitex super heavy gesso. Thanks for watching!

Hi, Mark. Thanks for the video! Why aren’t you getting a blue shift when you add the opaque white?

Hey Sheri- the shift is definitely noticeable on the left side of the portrait where I sprayed it over the darker values near the ear. For the rest of the portrait I worked from light to dark to keep it at bay. This means that I didn't use any of the opaque mixtures to lighten areas, just to darken them.

That's what I love to hear! Oil painting is incredible. Yes, I've been painting in oils years before I started with an airbrush. I do plan on start adding some drawing tutorials to the channel.
