A good challenge that I have set myself before, similar to your 'game' of beautifying the block in, is painting in several 1 hour sessions. After each session, the goal is for the portrait to look like it could be finished if I didn't do any further work to it. Each subsequent session adds refinement and clarity and allows for a few adjustments here and there, especially to areas away from the face itself.

This is a beautiful piece, Miss Lang. Even though I've kind of lost my will to paint, you are an inspiration.

Wonderful portrait and lesson. Love how you teach as you paint. This makes me want to try.
