Frontiers are criminally underrated. Larger version of a Dana 44 rear axle, fully boxed frame, full depth frame channels, last NA v6 in a midsize, stayed small, and are reasonably priced. Fantastic trucks and they deserve more spotlight versus people pretending the Tacoma is God's gift to man.
Frontiers are great. Bought one brand new in August of 1999. Nissan frontier desert runner edition 3.3L v6 . Drove it without an issue for 23 years. ( regular maintenance). Awesome.
22/23 Nissan Frontier Pro-4x is the best bang for the buck in midsize trucks. Its 4wd capability is severely underrated by most enthusiast. Ive been loving my 22 (I got an 3” Dobinsons suspension lift) Pro-4x and haven’t needed to use the rear end locker yet off-roading, 4 low has gotten me out of everything so far.
Was giving a Pro4X as a rental in Fresno and I really loved it! Also has the Tacoma TRD as a rental and the frontier was way more comfortable and just felt better! I usually drive a Audi so both were a nice change.
I ended up with a taco because I couldn’t find a Pro4x anywhere. That was in 2018. Ive always preferred Nissan, but the taco is still with me and going strong.
Idk about “underrated” considering every car youtuber says it’s a great midsize truck. I do think the frontier will be in trouble once the new Tacoma comes out next month.
I just think at this point vehicles are so overbuilt that there really are no wrong choices anymore. Not just trucks, but literally most vehicles with their intended purpose kept in mind. This hit me a while ago when I was reading people complaining that 250hp and a 0-60 in the 7-8 second range wasn't enough, for a family crossover. You know, a frumpy people mover designed to get you from A-B at the speed limit. 250 was not enough somehow to do that. That was a huge reality slap for me, that people will never be happy unless this years specs have higher numbers than last years, even if last years was already more than they needed.
I had a 2018 sv drove it on skid roads trails off road on a regular basis 8 months a year never had a problem aside the occasional alignment traded it for a 2024 pro4x with nismo 2inch lifted shocks and 31 tire its a beast on trails and economical on the road Nissan's are tough tested and true and so reliable i just love it
Would love for you guys to get a Frontier long term tester. It would be awesome if you guys kept it stock for a period of time then mod it out an build it.
That’s the trail I pushed my Maverick FX4 on. The way up to Fort Piute was the worst section. Being on the highway ready Scorpions and the low chin made it difficult. Thank Ford for the skid plates. Ended up blowing one of the tires near the end.
Thank you Jesus! I’ve been looking for a video like this for the Frontier because I wanna see how it performs in this scenario. Found some stuff here and there but this is exactly what I was looking for!
Great video. I think the Frontier is a fabulous rig. The Gazell tent is an amazing tent. I have had one for three years and love it. Thanks, Tommy. Good job my friend.
I love my 2024 pro4x , it's rock solid , my only complaint is turning radius ! But what a great truck ! It's so good . I'm to old to lift it , but it's awesome !
Hello TFL. Have you all thought about creating a say "TFL Trail" channel to solely do offroad trail and on pavement scenic drive type reviews. I would love to get your perspective on different trails and drives. I know you mix in, like this video, trail reviews with vehicle reviews, but maybe have a dedicated channel for trails you all go on. Just a suggestion, thanks for all the great content.
Great video as always, Tommy. But, a couple of things: $40K+ for a mid size truck without an adjustable steering wheel? And - for all you other manufactures out there - for the love of God, give us a top end off road truck without a crew cab, but with a 6' bed. Please!!!
@85mackey1 I'm there 💯% trucks aren't SUVS let's get back to making truck with the standard 6ft bed and put sunroof back in and everything that belongs Nissan!!
finally more frontier content been kinda bored with all the other trucks you showed that are new, while barely even giving the frontier a decent off road drive
Not a turbo 4 cyl engine? I'm on the market for a brand new mid-sized pickup that will be my first mid-sized pickup I think that one detail made up my mind. I have owned 2 Nissans, A Fairlady Z (in Japan), and an Xterra in Canada, so I know i love and trust the brand. A few very small modifications will resolve the few tiny issues I have with this truck, easy. Awesome and VERY helpful video, Tommy! A few years back, Tommy encouraged my purchase of my 4Runner TRD Off Road, over the TRD Pro, with excellent logic that saved me money! Here he goes being super helpful, again!😊 Thanks again, Tommy!
Maybe Nissan could start a trend of using late pre-production vehicles for off-road press demonstrations. Sounds like a great idea to have vehicles where light cosmetic damage isn’t a concern because, as you stated, they’re gonna get destroyed anyway.
@brad4527 You didn’t watch the video, clearly. Government requires a certified piece of paper for every preproduction vehicle, showing it was completely crushed. It is specifically stated on the video. Or did you want to buy the crushed cube version of it?
Glad a friend sent me this video. I am planning to take my 2-whl drive Frontier out on this trail. I have made some modifications for overlanding. So, after watching this video I feel better equipped to tackle this trail. Thanks for a very informative video on the trail and the truck.
I was at Ft Irwin in the Mohave desert December 2011 for 4 weeks of training for my Afghanistan deployment. Had a nasty sandstorm come through one night as we were loading up to convoy to another base for the night as part of training. I was the driver of the second HMMWV behind the trainer. The sandstorm was so bad he had no idea where he was going. I had my goggles on. Couldn’t see a thing. We were off roading all over the desert because he couldn’t ever find the road. Our tents were blown over and our duffel bags were blown all over the desert the next day. If you go out in the Mohave make sure you’re well prepared.
The boxed frame limits flex and articulation., Much weight in the back it crack the frame. The frame should flex (c channel). At the least the suspension should flex. Tires being off the ground is a failure. It dispersing all weight to fixed points. Not good. Also if they aren't on the ground no traction. This truck, like all boxed rigid frames will break with this setup. Long suspension and channel articulating is way to go. Doing what they are leads to changing lots if front end parts, wheel bearings. It failed in its setup.
@@itsallminor6133 How then do you explain Toyota's decision to finally go with a fully boxed frame with the 2024 Taco. Also, rear disc brakes as well. Playing catch up?
I'm a local in Eastern area of where you were driving. I camp all over the BLM, Mohave Preserve and the National Trails monument. That must have sucked, camping at Goffs with all the trains rolling by. They should have brought some port-o-lets and let you sleep further away, up Lanfair road, away from the train noise.
The scenery/tour was great. HATE that those vehicles have to be destroyed. WASTED $, time, parts, etc. They should donate them to a charity or something if they are not allowed to be sold. Horrible no logic sense that they make companies do that. As for your opinion on the "onX Offroad"trail rating....lmao I dig your honesty here. That would be a 2 on my rating scale as well. Which raises the question, how can you promote them when you don't agree with them? 🤔
I wish it had front lockers, the price and everything else is just fine and good up here in Canada, but for the type of overlanding I would need it to go through I need both front and rear locker 😑. I can change the suspension to longer travel and and a 2 inch lift on my own expense with the money I'd be saving compared to buying a ZR2 colorado or an AT4X canyon which are really over priced up here.
@oogleboogle123456789 adding front hubs aren't lockers, hubs don't really made the wheels lock their spin and roll at the same speed regardless of traction, tho if they did add an e-locker or a semi-locker for the front of the wheels it definitely be good enough.
