I purchased the Action 3 and sold my GP 9 &10. With over 1000 videos on YT, my history with GP is long and painful. I tired of the GP crashing requiring removal from the media mod and pulling the battery to reset. Overheating and shutting down were helped only slightly by putting the GPs in the freezer and then dealing with lens fog, plus the GP has no battery life. I just found the GP unusable in my workflow. On the other hand, the A3 mag clip is fantastic, plus the wireless mic receiver plugs right into the A3. DJI has made the POV infinitely more usable. I was at the point of giving up on POV before the A3. I would like to see the A3 shoot 5K DLog Prores so the footage would match up with my M3, but that is asking a bit much from a POV at this point. I am glad to have found your channel and looking forward to improving my drone video/photo skills. Thanks.😎🤙
I have several of both, the bottom line is the that Action 3 can be relied on to work EVERYTIME, the GoPro still freezes up and overheats and runs out of battery. No video from the GoPro is useless.
I love my Action 3 and the focus issue is not an issue with me. I think between the two cameras, the Action 3 definitely has more quality of life improvements. Battery life, front touchscreen, quickly swappable magnetic mounts. I love my GoPro, but right now I'm really enjoying the Action 3.
I can’t say I’m surprised about yours being out of focus too. I really think it’s a lens calibration issue. Hero 11 is a solid performer, but had high hopes for the Action 3
Your opinion was the nail in the coffin for me. After your livestream, I ended up buying the GoPro, and I’m glad I did. Not only did I get it for $350, but Capital One had a 6% cash back promo as well! Those focus issues on my DJI would definitely mess up my walking vlogs!
Great video, as always - thank you! 👏🏻 I am not getting either one for 2 reasons: 1. None of the features are improved enough over the original Osmo Action I own. 2. If my DJI Air2s and my 3 year old Xiaomi Poco phone have better IQ & sensors than the latest and greatest hyped action cams, we've been taken for a ride. Both manufacturers have the capacity and technology to give us better features, they just won't as we need to spend more money on the NEXT model, which is 1% improved and 350% hyped. Sadly, this is how the industry rolls and if the consumer does not boycott sales, things will remain the same. Wish you all the best, please do not stop with the quality content! 👊🏼🔥
Hi Jake, Appreciate that you were straight up with DJI as other YT’ers did not mention this at launch and once the focus up issues surfaced, they did not go back to update their videos. And seeing that GP has negative brand equity with unfinished products in the past, lots of viewers were quick to rush out to buy the A3. As a consumer of both A2 and GP10 I saw it differently and mentioned in several posts on pricing: - early buyers of A2 paid $519 full price for the dual screen combo and A3 is $329 and if upgraded to 10-bit and A2 doesn’t get it also, they will feel cheated. I don’t get DJI pricing as there is no consistent drive price, meaning that A1 is low, A2 high, A3 low so following this trend, A4 will be high again. And accessories are not backward compatible with each gen being different. GP has been boring for G9/10/11 but you get to reuse all their accessories. Something no one has mentioned additional costs added for buying A3. The starting price looks attractive but there is the out of focus issue + additional cost not mentioned. Furthermore, although the magnets are nice, you’re bound to lose the attachments and then need to buy more. - $329 entry looks really good value for money but is it really. A2 came out in 2021 around the same time as GP10 and the A3 was repackaged in a different body with similar specs as GP10 but more like GP9 from 2020. So we should compare to GP9 or giving the benefit of doubt to GP10 which sells for $349 with subs that has 1yr replacements. Add DJI refresh makes the $329 about same or a little more than GP10. And now GP finally don’t require subs to cancel and resub anymore. They give you the discounts as a new sub so the price should be $399 as you get extra accessories , free replacements, and unlimited storage. - you’ve already mentioned the higher resolutions and frame rates, 360 horizon leveling in most modes (limited to linear lens mode) but more available than A3, and 10bit right away + better dynamic range. And auto exposure and 8:7 reframing after shooting without losing resolution will be useful for my use case, similar to what Insta360 has provided for awhile. Anyhow good video and work to keeping it more real and honest. FYI, for the A3 out of focus, there are videos by Rush Media and others showing it’s a hardware issue and using diopters to fix it. I did the same with my Insta360 One R 1” when I added a 3D print to screw on a +10 diopter for macros and found it fixed the close up out of focus. They recommend a +4 diopter so I hope DJI or others will offer a screw on lens to fix this issue. Keep up the good content coming!
Hi Jake and Nomad, great video Jake, Nomad thanks for the information, interesting. I new to thus field and im confused should I go with gopro 9 or 10 or dji action 3.. What would you both suggest . thanks..
Edited: for grammar and typos @@nicthehunter9076, Well if you’re starting out and want an action cam, I would summarize as below: Price: - A3: $329, but you will need to buy accessories - GP10: $349 new off GP website or cheaper if you buy second hand off Ebay or Craiglist or other sites. From GP website, this price will include a one year subscription that covers 2-3 replacements and unlimited cloud storage. You can cancel anytime to not pay for a renewal. - G11: $399 with GP subscription on their website and now they have some free accessories included. If you are new, you will need to buy some accessories for both GP10/11. Highest resolutions and frame rates + 10bit + better dynamic range: - GP11 then GP10 and then A3 UI/UX (user interface/experience) + dual touchscreen + less buggy: - A3 then either GP10/11 Battery life: - this is a tricky one as people claim DJI is better but from a battery capacity standpoint, it’s 1770mAh (A3) vs 1720mAh (GP11). When YT’ers make tests, they don’t tell you that they turn off GPS or use same shooting settings and say A3 wins so I question this. Nevertheless say A3 wins here but GP has a integrated battery + remote with Volta (cost similar with the bundle for A3 at $439 - $329 = $110, you get a extended stick + 3 batteries + a fast charging case. The GP volta, you get a integrated tripod + about 3 batteries as it’s rated at 4900mAh + door that can plug in battery cable that is water resistant (it cannot handle a heavy shower but some rain is fine) + a remote for $129.99. With a subscription, you pay $90.99. For me, I prefer the integrated Volta because I can shoot uninterrupted with having to stop and swap batteries. And I have a remote to control the GP10/11. Alternatively, you have Ulanzi’s BG-4 5000mAh power bank + tripod integrated and much cheaper. The rest are other features that you might like and use or not for both cams such as the magnetic attachment of A3, which is nice but if you lose it, you have to buy more or hope other 3rd party sell it for cheaper. Other things you hear a lot about is overheating. This is a contentious topic for me as action cams are meant to be used outside with airflow. Since it is built small and compact and waterproof, then thermal physics kicks in. Heat needs to escape and dissipate out. So if you shoot indoor and stationary for long form (means shooting for longer than 30min continuous), then turn off stabilization + GPS + bluetooth and both DJI and GP will last for awhile (note DJI doesn’t have GPS). But for short form with airflow, you should be fine as you’re shooting maximum 1-3min clips as most are under 10-30sec clips. The overheating actually doesn’t overheat. The rated components and chips inside are either industrial temps of -40 to 85degC (-40 to 185degF) or commercial temps of 0 to 70degC (32 to 158degF). Note: So batteries temp ratings are more relevant to run during winter or summer weather. Both DJI and GP has solved this with their new improved battery temp ratings. Back to overheating topic, DJI lets the A2/3 run hotter, above 53degC which can cause 1st (~47.8degC or 118degF) or 2nd degree (55degC or 131degF) burns. So while it’s nice that A3 can run hotter and therefore “not overheat”, you have consumer safety risk at hand. This is why UK/EU/Aust have more strict consumer safety regulations than US (for some reason) and don’t allow DJI to use high temp settings that runs hotter than 53degC or 127.40degF. GP are playing it more safe and turns off camera which lots of consumers says “it overheats.” Then over time there is the issue of longevity and reliability due to pushing the components hot constantly. Just choose the tradeoffs that you want to live with. Alternatively, you can use a Xiaomi Black Shark fun cooler fan (either with phone clamp or magnetic) that needs to be powered but can let both DJI and GP run long form indefinitely. I tested out the A2 and GP10 and ran both for over 1-1.5hrs on 4K60/120 and 5K/60 (on GP10) and got bored because both didn’t overheated. I bought the magnetic version and just used a velcro strap to wrap around the LCD screens (it is where the heat is most generated). Make sure you don’t cover the lens in the front. If you need to see what you’re shooting, just use your smartphone. I use PGYTech extended tripod stick that has 1/4” attachment for either action cams + a phone clamp + tripod stand. If I can suggest for buying decision, you should ask what’s your budget and use cases to determine what you need vs what other YT’ers who are trying to sell you as they are sponsored with exception of Jake and a few other reviewers. But that’s okay too as they’re trying to make a living so no judgement required. Just know this and make informed buying decisions. Personally I own the GP9/10 (just gave the GP9 to my nephew as a hand me down) and keeping the GP10. I also own the A2 and like their modular magnetic design and premium magnesium alloy design (higher quality than the plastic of A3). Both work for my use cases. I was going to upgrade to both GP11 and A3 but I don’t grade my footages much so the upgrading was not necessary for me. And the A3 having out of focus issues needs to be solved for. I’ll wait for GP12 and A4 to come out to see if it’s worth upgrading. Nevertheless, I have a group that stressed test both and I’ve been with them on these rigorous tests to see if they both live up to their respective marketing hype. Good luck and sorry for the long message!
@Jack Boudreaux, good to hear it was helpful. I tend to write TLDR stuff but glad it helps you to hold off. It’s only 10mos more waiting or perhaps the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 might surprise us if they add a 1” sensor for lowlight. Having a hardware gimbal built in will help in lowlight situation as digital stabilization produces a lot of noise and struggles in lowlight. If DJI repackaged the P3 like the P2, then I will also wait another year and see.
Jake -- Great UNBIASED honest review. I also returned my Osmo Action 3 because of the focus issues. Hope they can fix the hardware (software CAN NOT fix it and will oversharpen the foreground but watch the background get destroyed) as the camera could have been a real go pro competitor !
this is probably the best comparison i've seen yet. I love the quality of video and pictures of my gopro11. only issue is the endless glitches and issues with the quik app and transferring files. I was really hoping not to have to constantly remove the SD card to edit content but it looks like thats the direction im headed. thanks for this video Jake
I just bought a Gopro 9, and having the same issues. I cant download files via USB. But I was able to connect to it via Wifi with a web browser to download the files in windows.
@@PremiumFuelOnly On connection menu you must select USB connection: MTP instead of GoPro Connect. And now you should be able to download directly on your PC using the usb cable! 😉
@@SuperDryFly I tried that but it didint work, it would only show the preview in the file explorer and freeze. With all of the glitches it has, I would return this camera but I like the form factor so I put up with it.
Good vid and obvs depends on your use. I’ll be keeping my Action3 as I run a motovlogging channel and can’t cope any longer with the unreliability of GoPro after years of losing footage. For me it’s a no brainer to keep the Osmo especially with the 10bit upgrade due soon. I also have the DJI mic running with the cam and it’s simply a superb setup which works all of the time. 👍🎥🏍
Man I'm new to motovlogging and I've been pulling my hair out with the GoPro lol. I just got the action 3 and haven't even turned it on yet but it already makes more sense for motovlogging! Hope it works well on the road 🤞🏼
@@ferVans1 Certainly. The freezing, crashing, non recording of audio, batteries dying even when they tell you they have 40% left are just every day problems especially with the Hero 9 and 10 models. For me as a motovlogger to have to keep stopping my motorbike to sort out the problem just became tiresome and extremely frustrating. This wasn't limited to one camera btw. This was on four cameras and GoPro's standard copy and paste reply to emails about formatting your card correctly added even more frustration the the whole saga. I should also mention I have been a TV Cameraman/DOP for the last 35 years so I know a thing or two about cameras and formatting cards etc.
Hi, well i just reviewed my atv osmo action 3 atv vlog footage.. i myself don't shoot from the distance where the issues are reported.. I did notice the issue once in my footage but most of it seems ok.. When you ride motor/atv i do not think its a showstopper at all..
I'm on the fence about them at the moment, but for me, in Canada, the cost difference is huge. 650 CAD for the Hero 11. No extras. 630 for the Action 3 Adventure combo. That's two mounts, a stick, 3 batteries, a 3 bay charger that can double as a power bank, and a vertical mount case. Oh and the suction mount. All I would need is a card. Also, as a free-diver/spearfisher, those extra 6 meters of submersible depth is huge. And in my instance, I suppose sharper image quality isn't a huge deal as 90% of my filming will be under water in the Pacific Northwest, ahah. I guess I'm probably already decided but I just like collecting as much data as possible. I still appreciate the heck out of your video and attention to details!
1:50 that looked like a huge rock. 👀 Great comparison, Jake. And thanks for running across the dangerous rocks to show us the stabilization! #SloanRanger
you could buy the ulanzi gp-4, btw turns out that magnetic bottom has flaws too, when attached, it can move front and back slightly, not a problem when hand held, but if you mount it to a bicycle handle bar, the microphone will pick up rattling sounds coming from there when you are riding.
That’s for the review. I film with GoPro now and have been thinking about the DJI. My problem with the GoPro is sound. Living in SE Alaska it rains here a lot.
@@JakeSloan I got it👍 Unfortunately it’s no longer waterproof. I just ordered a double clam to hold a small umbrella. I’m hoping this work out. Plus keep rain off the lens. However, I worry that it will pick up the sound of rain hitting the umbrella. Lapel mic is in the future for me I guess. 😂 Thanks for the reply.
Jake, one question. When the Action 3 first came out, all of the heavy hitters reviewed it day one. Not one of them mentioned a focus issue. Any idea why?
Must've either gotten perfectly calibrated cameras or they signed NDA's regarding the focus and asked them to keep the camera a good distance away from their faces when they filmed with it
it's possible that not every action 3 suffers from this issue but I and quite a few others I know have had this issue so I felt comfortable making this video this way. If there is an update I will make a new video
@@hanglooserecluse yeah, but a lot of them say that even though DJI sent me this, they have no control over my review. I get what you're saying, but I know at least 10-12 of the biggest tech youtubers reviewed this camera and none of them mentioned a word about focus issues.
I've had my Hero 11 now for a while because i was hoping GoPro had finally solved all the crashing issues that the 9 and 10 have. So far, it has not crashed, and it definitely outperforms both the 9 and the 10. I was on the fence about the DJI Action 3. I have the 2, and I really like that little camera, but it is the only action camera that I have nearly lost and its wide angle is not as adjustable as the H10. I was loathe to spend the money on another DJI Action until I knew where you're at on it, so this was really useful. I have spent the money on the Avata, Air 2S, and Mavic 3 so they did well enough out of me. Thanks, Jake, for really useful content as usual.
Hi. I'm planning to buy a GP11 soon. I have a MacBook Air M1. Do I need to upgrade to edit videos in 4K? Also, how has your experience been with GP11? Any problems? P.s. it's going to be my first go pro and I intend to use it for multiple purposes like sport videos, motovlog and travel hand-held vlogging.
@@aman.2912 Your editing software is going to be the limiter as much, if not more than 4K. I have a 32GB MacBook Pro M1 with 1TB SSD and 10Gb network connections to a 72TB NAS with RAID-5. I also have 4 external 2TB Thunderbolt SSD’s that I carry when I’m traveling for editing. I use Final Cut Pro and Apple Motion. Everything I produce (except shorts) is 4K 30fps. You need the beefiest hardware you can afford if that’s what you want to do.
Great video. The Go Pro seems so cloudy vs DJI in my opinion from watching your video. I don’t have either one but was thinking of getting one. Now I’m not sure which. Lol.
Hai From Malaysia, Sarawak. Thanks For Mentioning About The Focus Issues On The Dji Osmo Action 3 In This Video. The Main Thing I Would Like To Know Is Does It Also Overheats If Use For Full HD 1080p at 30 or 60fps for long periods of time? @@JakeSloan
I bought the gopro hero 11 to use it as a dashcam and to record family videos, but the battery does not last at all, and it overheats after 20 minutes of continuous use, it does not help to have better video quality if the camera turns off, for my needs, I would have bought an Osmo Action 3 instead.
thats unfortunate, to help keep things from over heating make sure stabilization is on low not high or boost and also lowering the resolution from 4k to 2,7 or 1080 will help dramatically
I’ve come to the same conclusion for now. Thanks for your valued feedback. I’ve had reservation over the blown out whites and flare as well with the A3.
Outstanding review but I would rather have the DJI that works in 4k with a little less features than the Go pro that will overheat in a few minutes and lose your footage. I have now had 2 Go pro 11's and they both overheat and freeze. I'm done with Go Pro. The DJI is rock solid, you take your pick.
Thanks Jake. Another great video. Maybe this is just me but I felt that the colors of DJI Action 3 looked better than the GoPro 11. I think if they fix the focus issue as you mentioned, they might be able to win the market. Until then, GoPro for the win.
Agreed! When they fix the focus issue it will be a terrific action camera. On the colors you can use a more saturated profile on the GoPro. I just don’t like the way it makes skin tones look.
I own an Action 3, so far I've been pleased with it's performance. Having owned previous generations of Gopro I'm just not prepared to take the levels of unreliability I had with those cameras. Add in the cost of media mod if you want an external microphone and the Gopro is vastly overpriced. So far great battery life, reliability and quality I'm happy with. Action 3 for me.
@@JakeSloan I honestly struggle to see an issue when I used the camera. A 4K version of the Staffordshire Classic Motorcycle show is on my channel. Filmed entirely on that camera with close ups of the bike. The only issue I did have was overheat shutdown filming in 4K 60fps. That's now happened 3 times filming indoors
I had high hopes for the A3 this time but it’s not there yet. I returned my Action 3 a few days ago. Too many compromises with video quality and options. GoPro video quality is unquestionably the best. I definitely like the usbc direct audio input and longer battery life of the A3 but that’s where the good stuff ends.
Not sure if my own Action 3 is affected by a focus issue, I'll check. That said, you didn't mention the perennial Gopro software lock-ups that have plagued the brand forever. I use my action cams for action, if the camera stops half way through the Action, and you miss out on the vision, then it's not an action cam. Glad to have cut ties again with Gopro.
How about stability and overheating? I keep hearing lots of issues with the gopro? This may be less of an issue when recording outside when it is freezing.
?? at 0:19 you said you spent the last couple of weeks testing out the action 3, but you commented on a twitter post a few days ago from worth it or not that you just got it in and you were looking forward to testing his findings about the focus issue. You Sir are a liar
I didn't know what the heck you were talking about, so I went to Jakes twitter and it took some digging but you're right, on Oct 16th he said this "Fascinating. I just got mine to start testing. I’ll definitely be looking for this" So maybe to Jake 4 days = 2-3 weeks LMFAO. His credibility just went out the window !
I have been testing it for a couple weeks, I just didn't have my personal one in hand... it's possible that I had access to more than one copy of the action. (one was mine that I purchased and one was someone else's while I waited for mine since I was traveling out of state... but beyond that (I can see how that could be misconstrued) I clearly show everything I’m talking about in this video.
Focusing issue is hardware and cannot be fixed via software. Some models has the problem some does not. I have seen many OA3 cameras with crystal clear focus and 1 with the problem and it clearly is hardware problem. That's why warranty is. The warranty won't come waiting new software you need to send it to service.
Great comparison. I am still on the fence due to the overheating issues with the gopro 11. Looking for a camera to use outdoors in the beeyard and as a dash cam. While I think the quality is a little bit better I can't help but wonder if the action 3 would hold up better in hot environments better.
5:36 the DJI colors look much richer and contrast more pleasing, contrary to what you state in the video. Is this because the GP video was not converted to correct gamma curve and color space or is that always how it looks so washed out on the GP? From that video sample, the GP looks bad! Video at 3:07 also shows the same poor color and contrast on GP 11.
@@JakeSloan At 3:13 there are minor vertical micro-shakes from your stabilization run test on the DJI. Subtle but they are there. The GP11 did not show the micro-shakes. Thank you for the info on the vivid color profile!! Very good to know. Great video thank you again.
I feel that the Gopro 10 was having issues detecting the right settings at bright light (like noon, clear sky, skin color too bright) - the whites were way too strong. I have a goPro 10. As most of us use action camera on automatic settings, the ability to deliver the right settings is super important and I feel that goPro does it wrong in these conditions. I wonder how DJI Action 3 will be in the same scenarios and if goPro 11 improved there.
@@JakeSloan thank you sir! Your videos have taught me so many important things that helped me create content on FB - that made it to tens of thousands of people in Israel! Thank you!
great review as always. Crazy I thought the image quality was better out of the DJI before I saw your video. Well one day I will get an action camera of some sort.
I video while I ride horses, so the closeup focus issues may not bother me. Where the A3 shines for me is the screen shut off and keep recording when it gets hot. I’ve lost a lot of good footage due to my GP10 shutting down when it gets hot. Enough for me to start using external power to get the battery out of my 10. Thanks for the review!
Great review! I decided to buy the gopro because of the unlimited cloud storage/automatic upload/camera replacement with the gopro subscription - this is a game-changer for travelling.
Great Explanation , as Usual , thank you Jake . In my opinion if the Focus issue in Action 3 is totally fixed , it will be the Best choice , according to its High Usability grade : Magnetic clips / Live view via mobile app / Long life battery / fast charging / front touchable screen etc. . . That's why i prefer to wait until Focus issue fixing , to Get The ACTION 3 .
@@JakeSloan they have to fix the dynamic range, clipped highlights, digital sharpening. With a larger sensor the action should have more tonal range than the hero 11
What bothers me about the Go Pro is the color profile. Between the two, I like the Action3 more in terms of color accuracy. And budget wise, the Action3 is the more affordable one.
I like the color of the Action 3! And the Action 3 never quits whil recording my. My gopro 9 quits recording even though it has good battery charging, dont know why!
Jeeez i came to the comments for some more insight and knowledge, wasn’t expecting the fanboy barrage wtf!! Thanks for your time, effort and hard work, the review was great and you’ve got a brilliant channel. Subscribed and thanks again.
To be honest I think in the video footage you're showing the Action 3 often looks BETTER than the GoPro on MY screen. It may come down to the issue of being "good enough" for the hardware it's being shown at. In "ye aulden days" of the analog music when making tapes/rcords they had the practice of listening to the music on very basic transistor radio's because it had to sound good on even those simple devices and not just on the high end audio equipment. With the GoPro versus the DJI it may be the same issue. The GoPro may make wonderful detailed pictures/videos on your high end computer/screen but most people won't have that level of equipment so they'll never (need or are able to) see that. The DJI 3 (I just bought the great value for money Action 3 adventure kit) is good enough and even better than my hardware. My hardware laptops and PC(Intel i7) may be a bit "underpowered" because it can't even handle 4K at full options. Many people will have the same issues, so an insane amount of detail (GoPro) is nice for the video enthousiasts but whether it's needed for the "average" user is questionable. The "average" user will find the DJI 3 option much more appealing because of its userfriendliness, much cheaper price, better hardware(mounts, batteries, waterproofing and NO overheating issues). The GoPro and the DJI are focussed on slightly different parts of the market, just like the insanely expensive professional photocameras and the cheaper compact cameras (which have been replaced by the phones).
The osmo has a focus issue for all distances, though it is a fabulous camera from the physical UI, not many of us will be hanging it out of a helicopter 🚁the magnetic clip is fabulous, though point taken. Being able to attach a USB mic without a media mod and 3.5 cable is a lot less faff and gear. The mimo app does preview while recording and I still find the GoPro a bit clunky while connecting, though I think I have now found the work around (turn off auto connect for all other networks) I'll be using the HERO 11 until DJI fix the focus issue.
For my use, I'll take a slight image quality reduction to stop dealing with GoPro junk. I do an automotive RUclips channel where I use an external or sometimes wireless lapel mic. The mediamod is basically a restaurant dumpster for that and the stupid GoPro audio adapter makes my camera setup cluttered and clunky. I have to do an audio test every single time I turn the camera on as it just randomly doesn't have audio from an external source. The DJI wireless mic setup looks much cleaner and will take up so much less space. I am 100% switching over. I hear at this point the focus issue seems to be solved from other videos I have watched.
You "forgot" to mention that DJI Action 3 can show preview on a phone or surfpad while recording but none of Hero 9, 10 or 11 cameras can do that. An absolute must when you need to control cameras mounted in difficult to reach places.
Hey Jake great to have you back home, great breakdown on the two cameras 📷 taking us through each of the sections. Just wondering 💭 as I miss one of two of the recent live stream. Did you every do the stream about getting started/ business end and set up you had mentioned it one time be very interested. And if you got your avata love to see your video. Take care hope all is well
Nice video, you’re not the only one to talk about the focus issue on dji and I agree it’s a Lense issue that can’t be fixed only a recall and replacement but DJI isn’t a honaable company so that ain’t going to happen.
I had very bitter experience with GoPro. It used to hang lot of times and it would be impossible to use use till battery was exhausted and recharged again. I am happy with my DJI action camera. Only issue is no custom built mic port. I want to know about the whether there is same problem in GoPro 11?
We all have our preferences at the end of the day. I’m saying goodbye to gopro. Osmo Action 3 seems more reliable and packed with features considering it’s more budget friendly than gopro. Stabilization and battery life are the major things I need for an action camera and the Osmo Action 3 performs so well in those aspects.
Appreciate the review and very informative for a possible buyer. I cant decide yet, GPH11 has strength on features and 3rd party accessories to choose from but the battery is terribly bad compare to OA3. OA3 has good battery and ergonomics separating the compartment of battery to charging port. Also the weather sealing of OA3 are best in its class. Please update if there's already a fix on the focusing issue on OA3. Thanks again and more power to your channel. Subscribed! 👍

I do not own either camera but I hear GoPro 11 has an overheating problem resulting in an abrupt stop of shooting. To me, that would be a deal breaker. Maybe because the test was done in Alaska during winter?
Thanks great video 😃 I have question I have GoPro 8 and every time I make video in 4k is walking video 20 minutes is cut my video to 4 small videos... So I can't upload to RUclips I need editing.. inaction 3 is cut too?? Or is 1 video of 20 minutes??? I'm the 800 like👍 🎉
thats due to the file formate limitations with FAT32, and there is nothing you can do about that unfortunately. either way you will need to edit together the files to make one long file
@@JakeSloan I LOVE the vivid profile. Looks like the a3 is using that setting or similar as I kept loving the color on it more. Lol. Still working on my side by side.

I got the 11. And it’s been working perfectly. I was wondering if you have noticed a battery 🪫 drain if you leave it in the media mod for say 2 days, and if that is normal? Great content. 🤘⚡️🤘✨✨
I haven’t used the media mod yet but is def possible. Also if your wireless connections are on it will drain the batter because it doesn’t completely shut off
@@JakeSloan ok hero9 in media mod for 7 days not used enduro battery 94%. Hero11 7 days in media mod enduro battery 🪫 54%. Looks like a drain on the 11 if stored in media mod. I’ll try the 11 out of mod. ( I should keep the batteries 🔋 out of camera till use I guess ).
Hi , I am bout to buy one of them - I have Quick question please- I am not an Expert AT ALL - however not only on your review even in other reviews i have watched- why do i like the colors of the action 3 especially in Videos - My eyes is the problem lol ? I am really asking because I know what experts looks at is different than what Regular people look at
Thanks for your review … I got the dji as I think it’s way better than the GoPro … and 10bit will fix the DJI’s problem … not sure the GoPros issues are as simple to fit
I am normally a great fan of yours jake, but this time I disagree. I feel like you are skipping all of the upsides of the A3 and focusing on the downsides. Also the part when you showed the quickstarts the A3 wins in every other video i have seen. (Hmmmm).
interesting maybe it was a firmware difference? I plan on buying another in a month or so to re test and see, without the focus issue its a great camera
I need a new cam for my driving videos, but the question is what to buy? I used to run with GoPro but i had so much issues related to software, storage and APP. Using the gopro was a nightmare have they resolved it or is it still just as bad with next to non software fixes and bad support?
How can someone go out there and compared 4k to 5.3k DOES IT MAKE ANY SENSE??? its unfair, i really appreciate your time but seriously do it better next time to waste our time ;) The Gopro 11 cant last more than 45min and it will turn off while the dji will go until the bat. dies... now thats a MAJOR POINT which most of these people like to hide, and they dont like to talk about major issues on gopro... dji on the other hand will definately take over just watch... Peace out folks.
Before you whine and complain watch the whole video we’re I do compare 4K to 4K. I won’t even address your other comments as you clearly didn’t watch the whole video…
@@JakeSloan Seriously you just acted like a child, i can watch and give my 2 cents perhaps that will help you to do your craft better but you're so bloody as if you're in those special days of the month. do you expect all of us to go with what you're saying? I got both of the camera and I can tell you point blank that the gopro is much of a hype because whats the use of an action camera i cant record on 4k for over 45 min? NOW TO ME THATS THE RETURNING POINT.
Actually friend, there’s a VERY distinct reason as to why the GoPro shuts down rather than just dies when the battery dies… ….FILE CLOSURE!! The dji can, (and has) lost lots of footage for folks already when the battery dies. “NOW THATS A MAJOR POINT which most of these people like to hide”
Does DJI have a method for controlling multiple cameras at once? I know GoPro has the remote thing (which has mixed reviews) but the ability to start/stop recording to a bunch of cameras at once is a killer feature.
GoPro has what remote thing? I've been looking for a way to start recording on 3 GoPros at the same time but so far only found 3rd party stuff that is hit or miss.
I think DJI has fixed the focus issue with the December update. I have literally just purchased one. 1 week in now . And I cannot see an issue with the focus at all. Awesome price, awesome features, awesome battery life, I can actually list nine reasons to purchase the DJI over the GoPro. And don’t get me wrong I’m not a fan boy I have head go pros all the way up until now.
Be sure and check out the updated comparison here: ruclips.net/video/akHxy-XrskU/видео.html
Thanks.😎🤙
excellent points hopefully they fix the focus issues soon
I have several of both, the bottom line is the that Action 3 can be relied on to work EVERYTIME, the GoPro still freezes up and overheats and runs out of battery. No video from the GoPro is useless.
I have had two Go Pro 11's and both has frozen and overheated with the black screen. Out of 11 generations and they still can't get it right.
They still not fix it yet?
@@vavalada98435 No.
I haven't had issues with the 11 the 10 and 9 on the other hand were very much problem cameras
I love my Action 3 and the focus issue is not an issue with me. I think between the two cameras, the Action 3 definitely has more quality of life improvements. Battery life, front touchscreen, quickly swappable magnetic mounts. I love my GoPro, but right now I'm really enjoying the Action 3.
excellent! it's possible you got a copy of the action 3 that doesn't have the focus issue

But what's the average time it takes you to swap in a new memory card and battery?
I can’t say I’m surprised about yours being out of focus too. I really think it’s a lens calibration issue. Hero 11 is a solid performer, but had high hopes for the Action 3
Me too and I’m hopeful they can fix it going forward! It would be a great action camera if they do!
Fantastic deal!

Great video, as always - thank you! 👏🏻 I am not getting either one for 2 reasons:
Thanks so much
Isn’t it the same for phones too lol
"yeah it's better, but I spent money on the last one so I'm going to wait until I feel like I need to upgrade" said every tech consumer ever
Outstanding Jake. Thanks for your honest review. I’ll always take your advice. 👊🏻👊🏻👍🏻
Thank you sir!
Ditto.
Hi Jake,
Appreciate that you were straight up with DJI as other YT’ers did not mention this at launch and once the focus up issues surfaced, they did not go back to update their videos.
And seeing that GP has negative brand equity with unfinished products in the past, lots of viewers were quick to rush out to buy the A3.
As a consumer of both A2 and GP10 I saw it differently and mentioned in several posts on pricing:
- early buyers of A2 paid $519 full price for the dual screen combo and A3 is $329 and if upgraded to 10-bit and A2 doesn’t get it also, they will feel cheated.
Thanks!
Hi Jake and Nomad, great video Jake, Nomad thanks for the information, interesting. I new to thus field and im confused should I go with gopro 9 or 10 or dji action 3.. What would you both suggest . thanks..
Edited: for grammar and typos
@@nicthehunter9076,
Well if you’re starting out and want an action cam, I would summarize as below:
Price:
- A3: $329, but you will need to buy accessories
- GP10: $349 new off GP website or cheaper if
you buy second hand off Ebay or Craiglist or other sites.
Highest resolutions and frame rates + 10bit + better dynamic range:
- GP11 then GP10 and then A3
UI/UX (user interface/experience) + dual touchscreen + less buggy:
- A3 then either GP10/11
Battery life:
- this is a tricky one as people claim DJI is better but from a battery capacity standpoint, it’s 1770mAh (A3) vs 1720mAh (GP11).
I think Nomad24 should be doing the reviews here. Nice one Nomad 👍
Jake -- Great UNBIASED honest review. I also returned my Osmo Action 3 because of the focus issues. Hope they can fix the hardware (software CAN NOT fix it and will oversharpen the foreground but watch the background get destroyed) as the camera could have been a real go pro competitor !
Agreed and I hope they do fix it because if they do the action 3 will be a terrific action camera
this is probably the best comparison i've seen yet. I love the quality of video and pictures of my gopro11. only issue is the endless glitches and issues with the quik app and transferring files. 👍🎥🏍
Yeah the DJI mic is a huge plus!
Man I'm new to motovlogging and I've been pulling my hair out with the GoPro lol. I just got the action 3 and haven't even turned it on yet but it already makes more sense for motovlogging! Hope it works well on the road 🤞🏼
Can you please explain more about the unreliability of GoPro that you've mentioned please?
I still appreciate the heck out of your video and attention to details!
test yours when you get it, some people have received action 3s that are working properly
1:50 that looked like a huge rock. 👀
Great comparison, Jake. And thanks for running across the dangerous rocks to show us the stabilization! #SloanRanger
Lol I’m not that strong 😂
Oh man, I’ve been loving the GoPro 11, but I do wish it had the magnetic bottom of the Action 3- that’s a killer feature.
you could buy the ulanzi gp-4, btw turns out that magnetic bottom has flaws too, when attached, it can move front and back slightly, not a problem when hand held, but if you mount it to a bicycle handle bar, the microphone will pick up rattling sounds coming from there when you are riding.
I do to, that magnetic mount is so easy to swap and move around...
That’s for the review. I film with GoPro now and have been thinking about the DJI.
My problem with the GoPro is sound. Living in SE Alaska it rains here a lot.
oh yes! have you thought about the media mod for gopro?
It’s Sky, another RUclipsr I follow, had the same issues with the Action 3
Paid promotions don’t talk about things that will scare buyers away

Thanks Daniel!
The main issue that I have with this review, is that nothing is mentioned of the over heating issue with the GoPro, and that can be a deal killer.
Because I haven’t had an issue with it. Even in Florida
@@JakeSloan See Overheating Test on David Manning Channel.
Fair enough!
@@JakeSloan Very true. I use the more saturated only when there is no human in the frame. Haha
Totally agree! Action 3 works much faster and stable than gopro. The focus issue is noteless if you are not zooming 200%
I hope they fix the focus issue soon because it will be an excellent action camera when they do
@@JakeSloan I honestly struggle to see an issue when I used the camera.
Agreed!
I have many times in other videos about GoPros but the hero 11 has given me exactly zero of those issues so thus I didn’t mention them
@@JakeSloan
Perhaps they have finally fixed the issue.
Thanks for the reply and good luck with the 11
How about stability and overheating? I keep hearing lots of issues with the gopro? This may be less of an issue when recording outside when it is freezing.
I haven’t had an issue but I also don’t film for long periods (15min+) at a time
?? at 0:19 you said you spent the last couple of weeks testing out the action 3, but you commented on a twitter post a few days ago from worth it or not that you just got it in and you were looking forward to testing his findings about the focus issue.
Busted 😂
Focusing issue is hardware and cannot be fixed via software. Some models has the problem some does not. I have seen many OA3 cameras with crystal clear focus and 1 with the problem and it clearly is hardware problem. That's why warranty is. The warranty won't come waiting new software you need to send it to service.
agreed
Great comparison. I am still on the fence due to the overheating issues with the gopro 11. Looking for a camera to use outdoors in the beeyard and as a dash cam. While I think the quality is a little bit better I can't help but wonder if the action 3 would hold up better in hot environments better.
I have another action 3 on the way to do a new test and comparison so stay tuned
You can always use the vivid color profile on GoPro and have a more contrasty saturated look
I have a second action 3 coming now to do a new comparison
@@JakeSloan thank you sir! Your videos have taught me so many important things that helped me create content on FB - that made it to tens of thousands of people in Israel! Thank you!
great review as always. Crazy I thought the image quality was better out of the DJI before I saw your video. Well one day I will get an action camera of some sort.
Well in some cases it might be. If you get one that isn’t out of focus I think it would be a great camera
You’re welcome and that is one area the action 3 does very well
Great review! I decided to buy the gopro because of the unlimited cloud storage/automatic upload/camera replacement with the gopro subscription - this is a game-changer for travelling.
Good call!
Where did you get your “spider” jacket ???
This is an Arcteryx shell over a Spyder fleece, the fleece came from costco lol. the jacket I bought from Arcteryx
Agreed. If they fix the focus issue the action 3 is going to be an amazing action camera
@@JakeSloan Right
@@JakeSloan they have to fix the dynamic range, clipped highlights, digital sharpening. With a larger sensor the action should have more tonal range than the hero 11
What bothers me about the Go Pro is the color profile. Between the two, I like the Action3 more in terms of color accuracy. And budget wise, the Action3 is the more affordable one.
Agreed
They both overheating when using continues of time that the bad side
yes thats true
5:47 I must say the background looks WAY better on the Action 3, but the near focus is fuzzy and I like the wider angle on the A3
Either way I have another one coming to test and compare again
I like the color of the Action 3! And the Action 3 never quits whil recording my. My gopro 9 quits recording even though it has good battery charging, dont know why!
I hated the GoPro 9. One of the worst
you're right about the focus issue , thanks for making this video
My pleasure!
Jeeez i came to the comments for some more insight and knowledge, wasn’t expecting the fanboy barrage wtf!! Thanks for your time, effort and hard work, the review was great and you’ve got a brilliant channel. Subscribed and thanks again.
Thanks very much!
I’m glad this video helped you out!
The mimo app does preview while recording and I still find the GoPro a bit clunky while connecting, though I think I have now found the work around (turn off auto connect for all other networks)
I'll be using the HERO 11 until DJI fix the focus issue.
Agreed and same for me! When they do fix the focus issue I’ll probably pick up another one
@@JakeSloan DITTO...
Thank you for so big and useful test with a lot of information. Subscribed!
Thanks for the sub!
What about the go pro overheating issue? I have read a number of people saying its pretty bad.
I haven’t had any issues with it
Thanks, Jake. Great info and video as always. Have a great day! 😀
Thank you
Are you going to make a video in the future when DJI fixes the focus explaining how they did it and if it is worth it?
Yes. I will wait a month or two and buy another to test and compare. I think it will be a fantastic action camera when they do
@@JakeSloan nice I can't wait. My hype level is through the roof
I hear at this point the focus issue seems to be solved from other videos I have watched.
being able to plug the dji wireless directly into the action 3 is a fantastic feature
You "forgot" to mention that DJI Action 3 can show preview on a phone or surfpad while recording but none of Hero 9, 10 or 11 cameras can do that. An absolute must when you need to control cameras mounted in difficult to reach places.
A more in depth comparison is coming when I can get one that’s focused correctly
Thanks for the great review! Has DJI resolved the focus issue? Sorry if it was posted elsewhere but I can't comb through 624 comments.. haha
I posted a new comparison yesterday with examples. in short yes they did in later builds. It seems anything made after January 23 is better
Take care hope all is well
thanks and I haven't yet done a stream about getting started in business although I did cover some of it in the last live stream I did
Nice video, you’re not the only one to talk about the focus issue on dji and I agree it’s a Lense issue that can’t be fixed only a recall and replacement but DJI isn’t a honaable company so that ain’t going to happen.
That’s why I felt comfortable posting this. I’ve seen enough other people post about it as well as sone people I know personally post the same issue
@@JakeSloan thank you for posting
I had very bitter experience with GoPro. It used to hang lot of times and it would be impossible to use use till battery was exhausted and recharged again. I am happy with my DJI action camera. Only issue is no custom built mic port. I want to know about the whether there is same problem in GoPro 11?
I had the same issues with gopro in the past, the hero 11 has been extremely solid for me
We all have our preferences at the end of the day. I’m saying goodbye to gopro. Osmo Action 3 seems more reliable and packed with features considering it’s more budget friendly than gopro. Stabilization and battery life are the major things I need for an action camera and the Osmo Action 3 performs so well in those aspects.
Yep and hopefully you get one that’s focused correctly
Is there any cage to get rid of that magnetic mount?
That is so vlogging stuff, not sporty or extreme stuff oriented
There is a cage as well
@@JakeSloan without magnet?
Appreciate the review and very informative for a possible buyer.
I cant decide yet, GPH11 has strength on features and 3rd party accessories to choose from but the battery is terribly bad compare to OA3. OA3 has good battery and ergonomics separating the compartment of battery to charging port. Also the weather sealing of OA3 are best in its class.
Please update if there's already a fix on the focusing issue on OA3.
Thanks again and more power to your channel. Subscribed! 👍
I just ordered a seconding action 3 to compare test and see!
Thanks Jake. Appreciate the honest opinion.
You bet
What wasn't touched on here is the overheating of the gopro. That is an issue when you use the camera and it turns off because of heat.
I haven't had overheating issues
Hai From Malaysia, Sarawak. Thanks For Mentioning About The Focus Issues On The Dji Osmo Action 3 In This Video. The Main Thing I Would Like To Know Is Does It Also Overheats If Use For Full HD 1080p at 30 or 60fps for long periods of time?
no the action has been very reliable for long recording compared to the gopro
Great video, Jake. Excellent comparison. I have the GoPro10.
Nice! Probably no need to upgrade then
nice comparison sir thank you for clear my dough 🤗
Cheers
I do not own either camera but I hear GoPro 11 has an overheating problem resulting in an abrupt stop of shooting. To me, that would be a deal breaker. Maybe because the test was done in Alaska during winter?
possibly but I also tested in florida heat lol but yes it will over heat durning long shooting periods
Thanks great video 😃
I have question I have GoPro 8 and every time I make video in 4k is walking video 20 minutes is cut my video to 4 small videos...
@@JakeSloanok thank you 🙏
Nice video Jake but what about the low light?
I will buy another action 3 soon and re-test on the focus issue as well as do a complete breakdown of the features and specs between them
the action wins
Thanks. Would you reconsider your recommendation after DJI released a firmware update in early Dec 2022? Thanks, Stefano
@Tony Fowler very unprofessional and could damage the brand on the long run
I have another unit I am testing now!
appreciate an honest review always
Cheers!
Was the GoPro in vivid or natural setting?
natural, I hate the way vivid makes my skin look lol
@@JakeSloan I LOVE the vivid profile. Looks like the a3 is using that setting or similar as I kept loving the color on it more. Lol. Still working on my side by side.
I have the gopro 9, it stops recording for some reason that I am unaware of. Battery is fully charged! But my DJI Osmo Action 3 always works perfectly! And I find that I now use the Action 3 ezclu!
I absolutely hated the hero 9. It had so many problems.
How about the overheating issue reported on for the GoPro? Any issues with that? Maybe not in Alaska.
I actually did my initial testing and comparison with the hero 10 and 11 in Florida this summer lol
My hero11 was a pain to pair with the app. Returned it.
Really? Mine paired super fast and easily
you never talked about the screen of death or overheating issue with the gopro hero 11
Haven’t had those issues…
@@JakeSloan oh
Jake, you’re awesome. Maybe one day I can get stationed in Alaska and enjoy that awesome scenery. For now, Colorado will do lol
Lol Colorado isn’t bad either!
I have waited long time for this video, thank you
You’re welcome
Hi , I am bout to buy one of them - I have Quick question please- I am not an Expert AT ALL - however not only on your review even in other reviews i have watched- why do i like the colors of the action 3 especially in Videos - My eyes is the problem lol ? I am really asking because I know what experts looks at is different than what Regular people look at
you may just prefer the action 3 colors and thats totally fine! I actually have another coming to re-test and see if it has improved!
Does the dji require a adaptor similar to GoPro to attach a mic or can you just use a usb-c to 3.5mm cable?
You can use some usb c adapters but not all
hey , how about overheating, waterproof, magnetic mount ( fast release etc. ), front screen, working temperature?
Covered (mostly) later in the video. Overheating I haven’t had issues with but the GoPro will have issues if you plan to record long format videos
Thanks for your review … I got the dji as I think it’s way better than the GoPro … and 10bit will fix the DJI’s problem … not sure the GoPros issues are as simple to fit
I haven’t had any issues with the 11. Which is more than I can say for the hero 9 & 10 lol
Jake, thank you for a great comparison video!
Wondering if you would recommend me to buy Hero 11, if I already have Hero 10?
Thank you again
I don’t think it’s a big enough upgrade to warrant it unless you really need 360 horizon leveling
@@JakeSloan Great! That's what I thought. I think I will stay with Hero 10 for now. Thank you! 🙂
DIJ has to solve "focus issues" , go pro has to solve overheating issues, i'm surprised you managed to use it more than 10 minutes.
I've had no issues with overheating with my gopro
Thank you very much for this video. I will stick to my Insta360 Go 2 for a while longer. Where did you get your awesome shirt? I want one!
I got that from Costco lol. It’s a company called Spyder and they make good outdoor gear
Which is best for my motorbike?
either one!
So since after this video was made 3 months ago, do we know if the DJI Action 3 has been updated?
I have another one on its way to test and compare!
I need a new cam for my driving videos, but the question is what to buy? I used to run with GoPro but i had so much issues related to software, storage and APP. Using the gopro was a nightmare have they resolved it or is it still just as bad with next to non software fixes and bad support?
I haven't had any issues with my gopro 11 which is a first for me lol
My only issue s with GoPros is freezing and loosing footage. If GoPro can fix that, will be happier
the hero 11 is the first one I have had that I haven't had any of those issues with
How can someone go out there and compared 4k to 5.3k DOES IT MAKE ANY SENSE??? its unfair, i really appreciate your time but seriously do it better next time to waste our time ;) The Gopro 11 cant last more than 45min and it will turn off while the dji will go until the bat. dies... now thats a MAJOR POINT which most of these people like to hide, and they dont like to talk about major issues on gopro... dji on the other hand will definately take over just watch... Peace out folks.
Before you whine and complain watch the whole video we’re I do compare 4K to 4K. I won’t even address your other comments as you clearly didn’t watch the whole video…
@Macadamia exactly, he's a fan boy and trying to ride the wave of DJI complaining
@@mohammedmehta2542 Salam bro, and thats something i cant keep my peace over lol.
Actually friend, there’s a VERY distinct reason as to why the GoPro shuts down rather than just dies when the battery dies…
….FILE CLOSURE!!
I've been looking for a way to start recording on 3 GoPros at the same time but so far only found 3rd party stuff that is hit or miss.
the Action does not
GoPro has a remote (gopro remote) that can be paired to many cameras and will start and stop recording on all of them
Great Video Man !!!
Appreciate it!
Hi Jake.....Nice review. I don't own either. But still like the info.
Thanks for watching!
I have another one on its way now to test and compare again!
