Jacob has never said that it's more important for technicality to be on display than whatever "artistry" means to him (and it means different things to everyone, might i add). no one aspect of music is "more important" than the other, and if you wanna stack a bunch of harmonies on each other and switch time signatures a bunch cuz you think it's cool (just like Jacob does), i believe you have every objective right to do that and it's dangerous to say there's a right and wrong way to approach how you make music, let alone how you listen to and interpret it.

I say this all the time as someone who’s studied music theory for years - you cannot take a purely logical approach to something as subjective as sound. Theory is only one side of music. You can’t treat it like math where every tiny thing must be explained with formulas and reasoning because then you just prevent yourself from seeing the bigger picture. I truly love music theory but I’ve found that focusing too much on it really hinders my creativity. It’s like comparing a robot to a human - robots can understand human emotions, but they’ll never completely grasp the human experience because it’s more than what can be explained with programming. Same thing with music.

im honestly so tired of the mentality that knowing music theory automatically equals better music. plenty of musicians, especially nowadays, can't even read sheet music, because they just don't need to, and their music sounds great regardless. just cause your music is more technically complicated and has an intentional lack of consistency does not make it better. i think good music can be enjoyed _and_ dissected, but it's clear that this album wants nothing _but_ to be dissected.

Even if your music sounds good to the ear, I have a hard time calling those people credible musicians if they can't read music. Some thoughts from me, a failed nobody musician.
JC's voice is an interesting spectacle. He's got impeccable technique and the intonation is perfect, but the simple fact is the tone of his voice is deep, throaty, and not all that expressive. It's the kind of voice that works great in an ensemble (hence why he was so successful with those vocal covers he was doing a few years back) but doesn't work as a lead voice.
And this new album to me seems like a betrayal of where he comes from musically. Think one more light by linkin park. Collier is a pretty capable jazz pianist. How many people have heard his first album? 'In My Room' is actually pretty decent because it's a lot more focussed than his new stuff. It's modern jazz/neo soul. No doubt about it. Pretty much all 4 djesse albums (yes there are 4 of them) are very broad in their scope, array of different timbres and genres. Doing that and getting it right takes a group of very talented people, usually a band. Sure, he's super talented, but he's the sole artistic director for all Djesse albums despite the massive number of feature artists. And these tracklists read like the most generic pop albums ever. Every song having multiple features is what I'm getting at there. Not good, not the sign of innovative and interesting music.
I've never liked how he's sometimes upheld as the most talented musician in the world. "Multi-instrumentalist". Sure, I'm a little jealous. But I'm a guitarist with 15+ years experience I can tell you that when he plays guitar or bass, it's all flashy stuff that sounds harder to play than it actually is. On live shows, he might pick up the bass for a few minutes and show off a bit but no way is he doing a whole show on bass. Doing that is a physical role. The instrument is heavy, big, the strings are tough to pick, tough to fret. Hard on the fingers. Only an experienced bassist who has put in a lot of time on the instrument can keep it up for a whole show without fatiguing. He tunes guitars differently so that it's easier to play chords. Not knocking that technique, but it's something to keep in mind. It's a way to avoid putting in the hard work required to be able to play loads of chords on standard tuning. Percussion is another issue. All 4 albums are full of sped up fills and grooves. It's like studio trickery/magic turned up to a deceptive level. And I get the sense that his fame comes more from videos of him doing tricks than the music he makes. Videos of him doing a 2:3:4:5 polyrhythm with his fingers come to mind. 21:22 polyrhythm. Making drawings on a piano roll with a midi keyboard. Singing microtones inbetween semitones. What do you think he gets out of showing off like this? It's all flash. I mean, try and make an impactful piece of music with any of those tricks. Maybe it's possible, but has he done it? Show me.
Listen to Louis Cole if you want a good version of Jacob Collier. He plays loads of different instruments like JC, but uses that multi instrumentalism to make captivating and hard hitting music. His 2018 album Time is better than his new album.

I listen to mostly electronic music and I do think some of the inclusions on here do already sound dated. Like, I get the impression Jacob doesn’t really listen to much music like this and plays around with these genres anyway, maybe including a surface level idea of what future bass or brostep for example sound like. It’s kind of neat, I would see it as an outsider perspective where his own sound always shines through, but sometimes generic. Like, just because a kpop group is on a song for example.

@@christopherswanson5849 everybody and their mother has been stacking unison supersaw chords since like 2012. It's nothing new but it's also nothing old. The sound is still very pervasive in electronic music. The argument could definitely be made that a lot of this edm
is derivative of older sounds, but that requires a knowledge of the genre that I am very skeptical to think Brads fan base has. From what I've noted these people have piss poor knowledge of electronic music outside of a few artists. So to me their complaints just read the same as calling edm "youtuber intro music."
I should also add that it seems to me as though the reason they think supersaws sound like 2013 music is because that's when it was generally breaching into the mainstream. But anyone who has kept up with edm since then would know it hasn't exactly fallen out of general use. A large large number of future bass and melodic dubstep artists are doing the same or sonically similar stuff to the example in this video.

28:17 I think that this is why many people dont like Jacob's music. On a fundamental level, people are looking for different things to connect to. Jacob's music is driven by his curiosity to see what he can do. He's very talented in some areas, but he does have his shortcomings. Above all, he's here to have fun making music.
I want to give you the perspective of a person who has been a fan of Jacob for years, but kinda grew out of it (me):
i got into Jacob as I just started studying music. My views of music were pretty narrow to be honest, i didnt really know a lot of music, nor did i appreciate all of the details of what makes a song good. That made me feel a bit like an imposter. I was also super interested in learning more theory because I believed it would open the doors to writing good music (it certainly did, but there's so much more to making a good song).
So when Jacob Collier came around it created the perfect circumstances for me to like his music:
    - I was looking for harmonically complex music to feed my hunger for theory and Jacob certainly delivered.
    - Musicians I personally knew and looked up to praised him, so that gave me the idea that it must be good and that if i didnt think it was, my ears were just untrained. Me liking his music made me also feel less like an imposter. It was easier to grasp what made his music impressive
As the years went on and I listened to more and more music, I started looking for different things in music, and subsequently I started feeling more and more disconnected from his music.
My two main motivators initially for liking his music aren't nearly as important to me now, but i still occasionally put on a song of his, though it will usually be one of the ones where he keeps it simple.

This is the best comment on Collier and it sums up my feelings for him. I don’t think he’s dry everywhere on this album. I genuinely like his songs such as never gonna be alone, bridge over troubled waters, and little blue, but as you said, a good chunk of this is him experimenting with different genres and not getting much out of it because it’s not made with the intent to invoke an emotional message (such as the butt Rock well.)
And that’s a large criticism I have for him to: love songs. A good chunk of these are not helped by the stereotypical love lyrics in some of these songs. DJesse 3 was better because it pushed beyond the lyrics of falling in love; it talked about miscommunication, loneliness, and break ups.

I don't really think this album is about flexing or sth like that. It's more about looking for new sounds, exploring new music and colaborating with more and more artist to see what's going to be created. Jacob is experienced with music enough to just create something more tasteful for his listeners, but that's not the point. He even said in one of the interviews, that all the DJESE albums are about his journey trough exploring new music and for example for my fellas (all of them are musicians) this album is something that they really appreaciate and treat as a new experience and something that we can learn from. For my parents some of the music from this album i showed them was really enjoyable for them (not all of them). Saying that this album is simply horrible is not okey. There's even that saying that when it comes to art, you can't just say is good or bad, but how you received it. In my opinion this album is something new, that should not be criticized for it's original form and I actually really liked it.

As a person and musician with perfect pitch, I wanted to add on to Brad's points during track 3 and his thoughts on perfect pitch. By definition, perfect pitch doesn't let you do anything except know what a note is without hearing any reference note before it. Literally everything else comes with the way you're taught. A lot of musicians, especially classical, with perfect pitch tend to be pretentious because they are taught to be - they're taught to be special, unique. Of course, it is a great tool to have, but the culture behind it very often causes people to roll their eyes when they find out you have it. I am at a classical music academy, and I try to avoid ever mentioning or showing my perfect pitch because I know the reputation it gets. So yeah, great tool, shitty people. Oh and terrible album wow

I understand that it's a bit frustrating when everyone puts him on this spiritual-miracle pedestal while the music sounds a little bland and manufactured, but to me it's clear that the man REALLY loves his music, pours hours and hours of work into it and tries to bring it to the to world candidly and positively. It's a bit sad that the music community bonds just as much over hatred as they do over love for music. I can already see tons of JC fans being bullied out of liking his music just as it happens with Imagine Dragons, AJR, or whatever other artists. I understand that this is entertainment and part of being a music critic is being harsh, it just doesn't really sit right with me to look down upon something a man spent years of his life working on.
