    Celebrity astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson discusses Apophis, a large asteroid forecast to pass dangerously close to the Earth in the year 2029.
    -----
    Neil DeGrasse Tyson discusses "Death by Black Hole: And Other Cosmic Quandries."
    Whether discussing the universe's origins as host of NOVA's "scienceNOW" or asserting that Pluto is a not a planet on "The Colbert Report," astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson translates the universe's complexities for a broad audience.
    Known as the great explainer of all things cosmic, Tyson first became known in the astronomy community by lecturing on the subject at the age of fifteen. He is currently the director of New York's Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, where he also teaches. Tyson has written seven popular books including the bestselling Death by Black Hole and the memoir The Sky Is Not The Limit.
    His professional research explores star formation, dwarf galaxies, exploding stars, and the structure of the Milky Way, topics which he writes about in his long running "Universe" column in Natural History magazine. Tyson's varied honors include the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal and People Magazine's 2000 "Sexiest Astrophysicist Alive" - City Arts & Lectures
    Ryan Wyatt is a science visualizer for the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. A longtime planetarian, he is actively involved in promoting fulldome video technology within the planetarium community. He manages the Fulldome Mailing List and also maintain web pages related to standards development for fulldome video. His work at the Museum relates strongly to the Hayden Planetarium's Digital Universe dataset, with an emphasis on creating content for the planetarium "space shows," including Cosmic Collisions and The Search for Life.

      As much as the right hates the left, they need to realize that despite how idiotic it all seems, it's no more idiotic than insisting we ban gay marriage, stem cell research, teach creationism in school, etc etc which is what the right wing wants. The right wing is just getting a left wing version of their own medicine. And they're so angry over it! Now you know how sane liberals have felt for decades by the religious/political proclivities of the right.

    Some slight corrections. If it goes through the CENTER of the keyhole it will hit in a specific spot. If it goes through elsewhere WITHIN the keyhole, it could move where it hits. If it does not go through the keyhole then it will NOT hit. In more recent news as we have tracked it with increasing precision we now know that it is very UNLIKELY that it will pass through the keyhole, and thus its threat level has been lowered.

    Preliminary observations by Goldstone radar in January 2013 effectively ruled out the possibility of an Earth impact by Apophis in 2036.[10] By May 6, 2013 (April 15, 2013 observation arc), the probability of an impact on April 13, 2036 had been eliminated.[3]

    So in the next ten years we need to develop technology to nudge that giant rock just outside the keyhole. Fortunately we have peeps working on that now.

      Or just blow it up

    • @pahtar7189
      @pahtar7189 9 лет назад

      Chev427BB
      Blowing it up might work well for certain porous or loosely bound asteroids and comets if we can get the nuke deep under the surface. But some asteroids are basically huge single rocks or even balls of metal, so blowing them up is essentially impossible without drilling down a mile into it (taking months under the best circumstances) and setting off several multi-megaton bomb, and even that may not work.

    • @jimmystoybox2577
      @jimmystoybox2577 9 лет назад

      Blowing it up would just take one giant astroid, and turn it into multiple astroids…. not a good idea. I would rather have one big rock, then multiple rocks hitting different locations..

    • @pahtar7189
      @pahtar7189 9 лет назад

      *****
      If you turn a one-cubic-mile asteroid into two half-cubic-mile asteroids you haven't done much good. But if you turn that one-cubic-mile asteroid into a quarter-cubic-mile asteroid and a bunch of house-sized and smaller pieces, you've dramatically reduced the amount of damage it can do as the smaller pieces will mostly burn up or blow up before they reach the surface. By comparison the one that blew up over Russia in 2013 was estimated at 20 meters across.

    • @jimmystoybox2577
      @jimmystoybox2577 9 лет назад

      I suppose that could work, but who's to say how it will blow up. What if it break into 4 quater peaces, or 2 halfs? I just think there's better methods thats all.

      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99942_Apophis
      As of 2014, the diameter of Apophis is estimated to be approximately 370 metres (1,210 ft).[3] Preliminary observations by Goldstone radar in January 2013 effectively ruled out the possibility of an Earth impact by Apophis in 2036.[11] By May 6, 2013 (April 15, 2013 observation arc), the probability of an impact on April 13, 2036 had been eliminated.[3] Using observations through February 26, 2014, the odds of an impact on April 12, 2068, as calculated by the JPL Sentry risk table are 1 in 150,000.[3] As of March 2018, there were seven asteroids with a more notable cumulative Palermo Technical Impact Hazard Scale than Apophis.[12] On average, one asteroid the size of Apophis (370 metres) can be expected to impact Earth about every 80,000 years.[13]

    This a great talk, but old. 2013's observations and calculations basically ruled out the impact in 2036 and set the odds of impact on 2068/04/12 to 1 in 256,000.

    • @alexdaland
      @alexdaland 7 лет назад

      1 in 256.000. Now, let's let that number stay in our heads for a while. It's hard to visualize odds.
      There is a 1 in 700.000 chance that YOU will be struck by lightning if you live in the us.
      There is differences, but let's say 1:10.000.000 for a jackpot in a lottery
      People spend 20$ on a lottery ticket(?)
      In 2012, NASA got 33$ per year from a household earning 49500$ (2011 money).
      Well, this is bleak. But relax, it's not like people ever get struck by lightning or win the lottery ey? Good thing we got to slashing those budgets again....

    @Bauks The idea is that the "keyhole" is the zone in which if it passes we will be struck, if it misses the keyhole it'll whizz past us. If it had a tight orbit than it'll loop around for a potential second pass, if it was a strong and wild orbit it may get thrown out into space. In any case we likely wouldn't see it again for centuries if not ever again.

    the earth has an escape velocity of 10,000km/s. that means that an object falling into the gravitational well of the earth will impact with a speed of at least 10,000km/s.
    that is assuming it isnt actually falling into the gravitational well of the sun, which it is. that means it will be going at 30,000km/s when the earth gets in the way.
    that is a LOT of energy to be converted. a LOT. this is why scientists have so much respect for objects travelling at cometary velocities.

    He is such a great spokesman for science. He has enough knowledge of pop culture to appeal to the layman. He is very entertaining. If you have streaming Netflix check out The Pluto Files: Nova. It is very informative and funny.

    @luckyguy11111 Depends. Merely sending a small warhead wouldn't pulverize the mass... there are no explosions in space... it would simply cause fission to occur and lots of energy and radioactivity to result. Near pulverization is an astronomically unlikely result in this scenario.
    However if we sent a large broad object with near equal mass at it, which we wouldn't considering the inefficiency of launching such an object, then near pulverization would be a likely result.

    @Whoknowsuknow In theory yes, but also in theory that could just make it so that instead of one big meteor, we instead are pelted by several smaller meteors that could easily cause more damage.

    Mr. Ty; I know this fellow that some people say he's an extraterrestial while others call him the atomic Cuban, and that's because he is able to explain things related to the universe in ways that make a lot of sence. His name is Jose Suarez. He has a fairly high I.K and at age 67 is sort of shy. He told me that a gravitational force field is made up of the harmonics of interrelated families of frequencies, and that it's made up of two sub fields. One excursive and the other incursive.

    I love Neil DeGrasse Tyson!
    Im not sure if this is all he said or if there was more, but I know that NASA already has a plan for how to deal with Apophis when the time comes. See, Apophis isnt very big as far as comets go, so it would be really simple to just land a retrorocket on it's surface, and decelerate it enough to put it off trajectory. It wouldnt really matter where you land the rocket, you can push it in any direction and prevent collision, it would just matter that you did it in time

    He says that the excursive component of of the gravitational force field is responsible for repelling other worlds and establishing what he calls their orbital corridors, impeding them from invading other worlds orbits and collisions; while the incursive component is gravity which serves to coalesce and unite matter compessing it towards a concentric point from whence it originates.A gravitational force field is an inherent component of extreme heat, but both fields accrue the same force.

  • @oenrn

    @siliexar If you watch it again, he says the impact would create a hole in the ocean 3 miles wide and 3 miles deep, while at the same time sending a tsunami wave that's 50 feet high into the shore. Then the remaining water would collapse into the hole (3 miles deep) to create another wave.

    @NUMUESTIKK no we would not send a ship up to blow it up that would just make a bigger problem , but i have then the idea that with a powerful lazer at the right angle you can evaporate said meteor creating a small "jet" from the vaporization moving it slightly but just enough to move it out of the way . plus i watch anime movies not Hollywood.

    friction caused by earths gravity, when something is hot enough and rapidly cools, it explodes.
    Similar to putting room temperature water on ice. Ice cracks because of the temperature change being too great for the ice to melt.
    Meteor explosions happen this way, except the temperature of the ice (being the meteor) is HOT and the water is cold.
