I would say flush it every 5 years. I add Rislone supercoolant too, especially to keep upper cylinders cooler.
Smart tip! A 5-year flush and Rislone super coolant sound like a great combo for keeping engines cool and running efficiently.
First, you DON'T need to flush your anti-freeze coolant every year! You're pissing away money replacing coolant that's designed to last at least as long as the anti-freeze is rated to last - typically 5-8 years, or more. Your 'tiny coolant passages' will NOT get clogged. If you change your coolant at the recommended schedule, there will be minimal corrosion anyway. Yes, if you use a brand-name quality coolant, with anti-corrosion additives, your coolant will last as long as the coolant says it will. Also, when you flush your system with distilled water, there will still be some left in the engine, even after you drain it. Best to use the type of coolant that is not pre-mixed. Make certain to use the specific type of coolant your car requires. There are significant differences, and different types cannot be mixed.. Check your specs as to the volume of coolant in your system, then add exactly half that amount of undiluted coolant, and top-off to the 'full' mark with distilled water. This will ensure the coolant isn't over-diluted by the water left in the engine after the flush, which will degrade your coolant's anti-freeze capacity. Get a hygrometer or use a refractometer, that is designed specifically to test the cooling efficiency of your coolant, depending on what specific type of coolant your car uses. The old-style floating ball testers will not work properly with modern OAT, NOAT, and HOAT formulations. This will help confirm if your coolant is still good, or whether it's time for a change...
Great breakdown! You're spot on flushing coolant too often is a waste if you follow the manufacturer’s guidelines and use the right type. Modern coolants are designed to last, and testing them properly ensures you avoid over-dilution or compatibility issues. Solid advice! 👍
DO NOT use 'plastic body' cooling water filters on your cooling system. Reason: most 'plastics' begin to 'soften and deform' at over 180° F; and then, when under pressure (13 psi is normal in a vehicle) will 'begin' to expand and DEFORM. So, if you do choose a plastic filter *be sure* to choose one with a thermal rating of ~220°± .
Simple speak: Choose ONLY a coolant filter and filter housing that are *SPECIFICALLY RATED* for HOT (~220°+) *pressurized* HOT WATER automotive service.
Good advice! Coolant systems operate under high heat and pressure, so using filters rated for automotive conditions is crucial to prevent deformation and failure. Thanks for the detailed tip.
What an idiotic statement, NOTHING LASTS. FOR EVER!!!!!!!!!!!
You're right nothing truly lasts forever! Maintenance is key to getting the most out of anything.
