- David Attenborough, BBC Wildlife, on the Royal albatross: “Otago Peninsula and Taiaroa Head is a unique and very special place. It is a place every visitor to Dunedin should see.”
I spent a delightful day in mid January of 2019 filming the Northern Royal Albatross (Diomedea sanfordi ) in the Otago Peninsula, New Zealand. The best time time to watch them in flight is after 3pm when the winds start to pick up. The Albatross needs the wind to take off and relies on the winds to glide effortlessly. It has a wingspan in excess of three metres ( 9 ft 8 ins) and weighs about 9-10kg.
Photographic notes: These footages were shot with a Sony a7iii+100-400GM lens.

Interesting facts:
"Albatrosses can live to 60 years and beyond. They mate for life and some do not find another if their partner dies. They have the longest wingspan of any bird, reaching up to 3.5m (11.5ft). In 2005, it was found that a grey-headed albatross had flown 13,670 miles around the world in the Southern Hemisphere in 46 days."
According to reports, more than 100,000 albatrosses are killed annually by getting caught in bait lines of fishing vessels - about one every five minutes.
Conservation status (wiki)
The IUCN classifies this bird as vulnerable, with an occurrence range of 63,400,000 km2 (24,500,000 sq mi) and a breeding range of 750 km2 (290 sq mi), with a total estimated population of between 28,000 and 29,500 (1997).
As a top-tier organism in its natural habitat, it has very few predators but major fishing industries are a huge problem for all albatross species among other seabirds.
The population is recovering from its severe downward spiral in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. By the 1880s, this albatross was extirpated from Auckland Island and Enderby Island. Pigs and cats are still a problem, as they take chicks and eggs, on Auckland Island. Longline fishing is a major problem and a possible emerging threat is Dracophyllum, a scrub that is taking away from their nesting range.
I went to South Island New Zealand in February/March and visited Dunedin. That day I saw penguins, seals and sea lions topped off with 2 soaring Royal albatrosses. Majestic sight. Two days later at Kaikoura I saw a sperm whale, various dolphins and a pair of orca just off the beach. What a fabulous country. Memorable trip.
Ive read that. During their long flights .they even take a nap while flying
That's the dream... Falling asleep in the clouds
Every time I feel down, I come to watch this sequence with my headphone.
It's really relaxing isn't it
When I die.....I will hope and pray with all my might to be an Albatross in another Life.
It's so soothing watching the Royal Albatross soaring so elegantly in the sky while hearing the waves humming in the sea so rhythmically.💖💖💖 It takes me away, from this currently chaotic world to the joy and freedom in the sky. I hope I can experience this in my dreams tonight. Thank you, dear Mr. Chew🙏. Wishing you and your family good health and happiness for a life time! 😊
Beautiful ! Elegant ! Impossible for human to mimic ! Human should be humble to these lives exsistenses !
Well actually, there already is a type of plane that can fly without any thrusters
@@spacesheep6547 No, !
@@kurosakamiwako8663 look up glider plane
@@spacesheep6547- Thanks; just looked up a glider dummy.
My God, how majestic! Only when the bird flexed its neck I was reminded that this is a living creature, instead of a world-cruising aircraft.
Marvelous albatrossen, but also a really marvelous piece of artwork you delivered here! Thank you so much for sharing!
How peaceful .... what a great escape from reality. Just beautiful.
i read a book recently about the lives of sea birds cry of the birds... i cried a lot too. and would love to see a real albatross and all the others that i read about. but i am so sad too and, in complete awe of all these wonderful creatures. thank you everyone for doing this footage.... thank you very much.
THANK YOU, FOR MAKING ME A DREAM COME REAL. SEE THE FLIGHT OF ROYAL ALBATROSS. With no words ❤And THANK you, YT😘
This beautiful bird has just joined a Kestrel and Swift as one of my favourites on earth 🌎 😍
That's what I always dreamed of seeing! Bless God for his creatures
It remind me of the rime of ancient mariner
Wow! That’s some bird!,with those airplane wings! God is magnificent with all these beautiful creatures he has made !🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Is anyone going to tell him religion is fake news..?
@@TheOneAndOnlyZeno A lotta these websites get offended if you knock on non-thinker's door so probably not. However evolution on this rock has certainly been hard at work. For example we have Sand Hill Cranes here in Florida that will walk right up to us. I mean eyeball to eyeball! Of course they're looking for a handout and we most certainly oblige. very humbling experience because these guys are BIG with a dagger for a beak that is quicker than a snake strike. Yep take food right from your hand (without touching same). Amazing. And very humbling.
@@TheOneAndOnlyZeno believing something came out of nothing is fake news.
Yes you're right. God is magnificent ♡
You should have been here earlier. God already killed 90/100 of his Creation!
Danke für dieses wundervolle Video mit den reinen Naturklängen. Der Albatros ist mein Krafttier und und ich war den Tränen nahe ihn so bewundern zu können....
Wonderful clip. My totem bird. Love this video.
I could watch this over and over. Amazing to watch them soar, and to watch them adjust their wings for different conditions in flight.
Inprecionante, tem um vôo mais bonito do que qualquer aeronave do mundo!! Tem olhos bem maquiados, que já vi lindíssimos!,, Show 👏👏👏👏
I have dreamed that I was flying effortlessly, I wonder if I was an Albatross in a previous life? 😴
What a stunning bird ! Gorgeous video, thank you for sharing 🙏
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? I think its both!
Ah, 🥰Albatrosses are my favourite sea birds! Since I learned to build and fly model gliders, and learned how these beautiful creatures soar, using the natural airflow caused by the waves, I am fascinated by them!
Mogwai // Ether led me to search for an Albatross in flight. The video conveys the message of life and how wonderful it can be. At the end of their video is an Albatross on the wind and it seemed so peaceful to me. Thank you for uploading this video and for the peace of mind and wonderous feeling it brings... Love to live . Live to love
Super video got a chance to watch great Albatross flight

Just subscribed, and found out that you put so much effort on giving such a detailed description. I have so much respect and appreciation for you! 😊👍
Jet W Thank you so much for kind comments and appreciation. It was a labour of love. So wonderful to have the privilege to film them. Cheers!
Amaizing piece of engenering
Meraviglioso, video spettacolare
My Goodness...This is beautiful....beautiful....👍👍👍👌👌😊😍😍
I will reincarnate as one of these amazing, beautiful creatures spirits of freedom.
What a fabulous video of a Royal Albatross. I have been watching a nest site of one - they are such a majestic bird and I absolutely love their skycalls in greeting each other. Thank you for the video :):):)
One wonders HOW they can mate for life but yet be 1000's of miles from one another during the course of a year. They're obviously using some from of quantum mechanics for navigation. Absolutely magnificent creatures.
...and I say to myself the world is full of beautiful creatures we must respect and protect - but leave in peace.
Finding videos of it just flying was harder then I thought
What a beautiful, beautiful bird!
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much -- truly beautiful and inspiring (and the sound track is lovely too).
Someone should put a camera on the bird, so we can see antarctica.
B H literally
It would drop
Absolutely agree
I completely agree, it would be amazing to see the world from the albatross point of view. Strap an action camera to an Albatross to record the migration, that would give us a whole new perspective to this majestic animal, and would be beautiful to watch too
Perfect video!!! Wish I could go there
QUÉ HERMOSO, GRACIAS Natural World Chew POR ESTE BELLO VÍDEO. ABRAZO DESDE COLOMBIA
Increíble y hermoso verlo volar y lo que dio la naturaleza
Absolutely stunning. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you...that was enjoyable to watch..
Meanwhile I am waiting for a flight to go to New Zealand..

Beautiful extraordinary creatures
A thousand stars for the albatross, its flight of the ocean's, with the mariners.!
Wunderschön 🌍👍😎
Can it be more beautiful- love it- the master of gliding that's for sure.
Amazing. I heard this bird can stay airborne for days!!
5 to 10 years to be exact.
The Boogeyman realy?
Marissa Lopes thank you for the info
@Marissa Lopes Maybe I was fooled by a website that states it can stay airborne for up to 10 years.
They go out to sea for the first 5-6 years without touching land then return home to New Zealand or the chatams to breed
So peacefull and gracious
Wonderful birds! One of my favorites! I love to watch them! :))
Mother nature is the most relaxing music

Superb gliding bird is this

EPIC!!
On Own 👍🏿💪👌👈 Wow Wow great 🙏
The Nature God ez Great 🙏
i never really realized how long their wingspans are wow
We have sand hill cranes here in Florida. the species here do not migrate thus they're here all year round. But they do a lotta walking around and in fact will walk right up to us (looking for a handout, of course). And they're BIG too. They're also one of the highest flying birds in the world. But although they're larger than the albatross overall they don't have quite this HUGE wingspan.. I love them though as they also mate for life. No.. we don't have the magnificent albatross anywhere around here though!
Awesome
I wonder whether a dedicated video camera is better or this type?
ALPHONSINE Aguillon Honestly, I don’t really know cos I have never used s dedicated video camera before.
Amazing n no chance done by Disney ✍👈
They look amazing but...
THEY LOOK LIKE THEY'RE NOCLIPPING
holy birds
Who is there after watching ‘‘Day Dreamer'' serial ❤️
I wonder if they ever think: Corr my wings ache!!....................... lol
No. They have a specialized shoulder tendon which locks the wings open. I only just learned this fact a few days ago :D
Looks like a seal with wings lmao
Looks like a dragon
