Oh my lord.... Linda Perry is a legend. I'm almost certain they were a one hit wonder. I've heard other songs of theirs but NOTHING got as big as this song. If anyone is a pink fan, they will be able to hear Linda Perry on Pink's misunderstood album who Linda helped write, produce and lend vocals to on a couple of songs. She is definitely a power house.

Lead singer "Linda" is a f. living legend in music history! She didn't only wrote this hit, but also songs for Pink, Celine Dion, Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani and others ... She has her own record label with artists like Faith Hill, Sugarbabes and so on. Just to name a few beside Britney Spears, Kelly Osborne with support of Lisa Marie Presley (< dauther of the KING) ... The song "Pray for Forgiveness" from Alicia Keys was written by her, ... and on and on and on! Just to name a few more: Courtney Love, James Blunt, Skin, Rossdale, etc.

Linda Perry’s steampunk vibe…along with those loud boxers are magnificent! Such a shame that she works as a producer rather than a performer now. She’s definitely a one of a kind vocalist.

Linda Perry (lead singer) is the song writer & she's written songs for some of the biggest names in music. She's also a good friend of Dolly Parton & they just released a cover together of this song, with Dolly singing & Linda playing guitar. It's on Dolly's RUclips channel. They changed the lyrics a tiny bit & it's nice with the Dolly touch. Their video for the song has some throw backs to this video too. It's a fun watch. And Linda is somewhat known for her hats. She's got a different but equally large & unique hat on in the Dolly video.

@@kathybwell It's really, really good! Highly recommend hopping over to Dolly's RUclips channel & checking it out (it's fairly recent). You can tell the 2 of them are good friends & genuinely like each other in real life. Of course Dolly's voice just adds a whole new layer/meaning & you can tell Linda is pleased with it all.

I was on the last buddy trip I took before my first child was born. We went to Panama City Beach and we went on a bender--beer, weed, and shrooms. We were standing on the beach drinking beer, high as fuck, and this song started playing through these loud speakers at the bar behind us. I'm 53 and still telling this story, because this song was fucking badass.

The song is more or less about struggling to survive in a world that is inherently designed to keep you down. Various lyrics allude to this:
_"Twenty five years and my life is still trying to get up that great big hill of hope for a destination."_
_"I try, oh my God do I try in this institution"_ (referring to the broken system)
_"I pray, oh my God do I pray, I pray every single day for a revolution."_ (praying for the system to change)

Linda Perry is super talented. Check out 'Beautiful' or 'Hurt' both written by Linda Perry and performed by 'Christina Aguilera'. I recall a great story from Linda Perry about how Christina recorded 'Beautiful' in one take, Linda loved it, kept it but Christina constantly hounded her to do another take which never happened. When you know it's right! Cheers.

The second part of the first verse suggests to me that she’s singing about a woman trying to compete in a man’s world (“this world was made up of this brotherhood of man, for whatever that means”). Or perhaps that she just doesn’t fit in. The praying for a revolution is that we put away our old preconceptions and open our minds to new people and new ideas.

Dude, this is from MY era. Teenager in the 90's. At the time, we understood it for the movements in our time. Listening to it now as a middle age Gen X, I'm SHOCKED at how relevent it is to todays trials. This should be the Millennial's and Gen X's anthem. What I'd like younger adults to know is that most of us get you. 75% of our generation is divorce, many of us leaving our homes, selling everything we dont need, using tax returns to buy cash cars that we van carry liability insurance on because we can't afford a car payment and full coverage. Cutting costs where we can to save up enough for a down payment on a rental in a decent neighborhood so you can move yourself and your teenage kid out of your retired parents' house where you had to move in "temporarily" because youre starting completely over. And you still can't quite get ahead. Dont listen to the few soapboxers that think youre just lazy. Most of us get you. We remember what it was like moving out on our own the first time. It WAS different. You could afford rent on two minimum wage incomes. Maybe not the best place, but good enough to move out on your own or with a roommate. My young husband and i bought our first starter home in a decent neighborhood for $23,000 when he was 22 and i was 20. Neither of us came from privilege. I was 17 when i got pregnant with our first child. Pregnant with #2 when we bought the house. We had our son and i turned 21 two weeks later in that house. Here's the kicker...he worked in a lumber yard and i worked as a nail tech on commission, happy if i cleared minimum wage, despite constantly being booked, as I was very good. Still we were able to make it. That is a pipe dream now. I remarried two years ago. My husband and I left the homes we owned and started over together. We both have pretty decent jobs, we, toegether, rent a nice home with a deck and a fenced yard for our dog. My husband took over the lawn maintenance for the three houses here on our cul de sac, so our rent is $200 cheaper than our neighbors. If, god forbid, we were to split up 9r one of us pass away, neither one of is could afford to stay in this house. It would be back to a two bedroom apartment in a complex for both of us. Dont get me wrong, we're happy and doing our best with rising costs of MOTHERFUCKING EVERYTHING, like everyone else, but we will never own a home again. Ever. It IS different now. Its much harder. And, whether its true or not, you often can't an help but feel like every aspect of your life is rigged against you. Trust me. We get you. I have so much empathy for the young adults that are trying like hell to get out and màke it work but are making ZERO headway. If youre truly doing youre best, it not your fault. NO ONE should have to work 70 hours a week just to survive. Not even live comfotrably in many cases. JUST to survive. We get you. So many of us try to want to go back to school so we can afford to stay off welfare as a single parent, but a degree costs as much a house. Starting out with student debt... I have around $16,000 in student loans from goingto college when i wasn't ready because that's what youre supposed to do immediately after high school, right? So with my payment schedule ($200/mo), i will pay for 25 YEARS, and WHAT'S LEFT will be forgiven. I will be 60 YEARS OLD, will have paid $60,000 on a $16,000 loan, and it STILL technically will not have been paid off. Darlings, WE GET YOU.
We understand the mental health struggled of trying to come up in a seemingly hopeless world with nothing to look forward to and work for, when there's no reason to try. The loss of pride in being self-sufficient, and even comfortable, on a blue collar income. You can't do it without selling your soul to your job at working class pay. With NO HOPE of achieving the American Dream, let alone retiring. We can look forward to semi retirement at best. No wonder your (and our) mental health and emotional stability are suffering in so many different ways. Its hard to not break when hope has become a luxury. We get you.
This is just MY story. It's not special or unique. A LOT of our generation are going through the exact same thing.

This song also had a dance remix that was as popular as the original. They have totally different vibes, but both are equally great songs.
