- In honor of World Mental Health Day on October 10th, James Blake sits down with Zane Lowe to discuss the state of mental health awareness in the music industry and his own personal journey. James Blake explains that there has always been a thread of mental health struggle in his records, but over time he has grown and realized his duty to unabashedly articulate the truth about his mental health in his first language, music. He has been an artist on the forefront of mental health awareness since the beginning of his career, but as society becomes more dependent on social media, he believes mental health is more important now than ever. James Blake is such a well rounded deep human and artist. I could listen to his music, and to him talk, forever. It's so refreshing to hear an artist talk about the deep stuff too, so articulately.
I just want to say that I love this man. The way he presents himself and of course I adore his music. He's one of my top 5 favorite artists along with Tame Impala, Sade, Beyonce, and John Mayer.
And handsome giant
@Trent Roseboro Thanks!
Sorry about Beyonce
As an artist and human, I really recognise all they are saying especially about getting away from the phone. But there’s all these loops and things that bring me back like ‘ahhh I need to promote’ or this very RUclips video to learn more and get involved etc etc etc there’s always something seems like it’s forever. Perhaps a moderate day or so here and there
Ayye I’m a human too whasssup
I don't think outright abstinence is a realistic solution anymore especially as an artist yourself because social media is a useful tool. The trick is learning the digital hygiene to actually realistically use it as a tool and only that which I know is hard when the app is set up to be addictive.
“do you want to make a statement or do you want to be heard?”
oof, bars. love that
GRATITUDE!! .. That's it ..straight to the point ..every time you sit down before you eat, close your eyes and start naming what you are grateful for .. little things .. thankful to wake up today..for the opportunity to change something .. for food.. just small things .. go in the zone and you will start naming a lot of small things and when you open your eyes it can be really powerful. peace to all .!!
Gratitude is the ultimate state of receivership 🙏❤️
I'm glad this interview is happening and people are being more open about their mental health.
James’ album release day : mental health talk with Zane.
Actually love this so much listening to many tips and tricks from two lads, albeit both are still figuring it out along the way 😩
Listening to Music and making music can help a lot with with mental health, sometimes. People don’t always realize even the basic sound of nature and silent is a huge benefit.
The problem these days: too much noise in form of media that triggers fears and worsen the mental health.
COVID has truly shown this to be true to me. Especially here in australia recently being stuck in lockdown, and watching every press release and all the chaos of covid discourse and opinions. So painful! Halfway through I decided to completely ignore it and get on with my own thing.
5:49 is the best sign of the times right now. If we keep talking like this we may just have a healthy entertainment industry 🙏🏾
This talk means a lot to me right now. Thank you.
Cool but now even our mental health is being commodified, especially by the music industry. It’s not in the public eye for charitable reasons. Watch out for that.
Excellent point. 👍
Absolutely spot on
Everything is inherently commodified in a capitalist system 🤩🤩
James Blake called Pitchfork out about this in 2018 and they've been arsey to him ever since.
one of pitchfork's most pathetic moves which is saying a lot
@@desapole Pitchfork gave ASSUME FORM a 5.9?! What a joke. A 9 is more like it!
@@dougxvale They gave it 5.8 (more like an 8.5 amirite?)
when is pitchfork not arsey? theyre basically satire at this point
18:16 "If you are serious about feeling better.. then the thing it did for me is getting away from my phone."
I love this conversation, I absolutely love James Blake, and I love that we're having more and more conversations about mental health in general. There were a few gems that I’m actually going to take with me in working through my own stuff. I also want to point out that Janet Jackson's The Velvet Rope is a deep dive into her own struggles with mental health, and it came out back in 1997. It was huge for an artist of her scale to be talking about those things in such a raw and open way, and I think it is one of many things that helped pave the way for the conversations we're having now, particularly in the music industry. I remember because I was struggling with my own mental health in a new way at the time, so it was very meaningful for me. And I don't even know enough to feel confident in saying that she was "the first"...I just know that she was significant and that she predates James and others considerably in tackling these issues through her art and her public presence. I think it's worth it to place all of this into a context because it actually makes the conversation richer and fuller.
I love James Blake as an artist. I'm getting to know and love James Blake as a person.
Insomnia lullaby is my bible when I meditate and have thoughts…Omg thank you so much James Blake
I'm obsessed with the new album but now I'm in love with this man.. lol ..
Spot on about music not being the only outlet.
Thank you for uploading the full interview
One of the best interviews Apple has uploaded here on RUclips
Stigma is real and still is about it
Love the album
Homai how did I only get to watch this now? Loved it.
Great conversation, regardless of whether it's to promote James' new album (which is great), Apple, Zane, etc. It's easy to forget that musicians, and others out there that we admire, are not necessarily super heroes and are struggling with the same issues we are. And they can be struggling with it, and figuring it all out, yet still be successful. Sometimes it feels like the two can't go together. Loved what James said about his commitment to himself to be more authentic and honest, and the positive impact that has had on his life. So, yeah, a little promo in there, but great things to take away from the convo too.
Love the new album

Great video, I don't know who needs this information but hope you know that Crypto is the best way to earn financial freedom.
Without doubt crypto is so money making.
It's nice to hear people discuss about investment, because investment always beat cash.
This is the kind of information that we don’t get from most youtubers..
@Hayley Forbs that won't bother you if you trade with a white-collar worker like Mr Brandon Hines.
Count me in, I’m placing my trades with Expert Brandon Hines ASAP.
This host ruins it.
I would say that Most Artists Deal with some type of Mental Health Issue.. Artists being so Brilliant, It's extremely difficult to manage all the THOUGHTS in the Mind...
I agree. ❤ your name - Cellular Integrity
