I love Annie Sloan! Absolute Gem! She IS the real deal. And of course she did all the work and in a short period of time, her hands all in and with a genuine heart and smile. Love her! I've also Never seen a "host" leave to go pick someone up in the middle of a shoot lol. Speaks volumes as to the genre of today. Long ago are the days of Annie Sloan work ethic, she's beautiful and a treasure!!
A couple of issues that are not clear in the video: Water should be tepid. The website suggests 1 Tbs of paint per liter of water. I'd mix my paint first in a large jar, with water, shake well to disperse the paint and avoid blotches, then add to the remaining water in the basin, stir in well. After agitating fabric for a bit, remove fabric and wring out excess water. Hang to dry, over tub or outside. Once fabric is DRY, add to your Dryer, max heat setting, and tumble for at least 15-30 minutes OR iron fabric to heat set. If your end product needs to be washed, wash in tepid to cold water, dry as usual. I'd also wash it Alone, the first time, and take a peek in the washer before the rinse cycle drains, to judge how much, if any, it might bleed. Hope this helps!
Miss Annie, I absolutely love your ALL of your tutorials and can't tell you how much I have learned from you. I'm so inspired by you work and never stops to amaze me how real you are. Some ladies of your calbitor would not get in there, paint up to your elbows, no gloves in site... my kinda person, old school and real. I cannot say enough good things about you and I love your work. I now down to the queen of DIY.
This is life changing and I just love what you can do with Annie Sloan paints, my question is what happens when you need to wash it, will the stenciled areas wash out also will the dye wash out as well? Thanks Shenel
It doesn’t appear anyone answered your question. All I could say in response is that when the first color blue was added “ dipped” they put it in drier. The drier would set the color. In as far as the stencil, I’m not sure, unless they dried it to.
From Annie Sloan website: ;Once completely dry, iron or tumble dry the fabric to seal the colour. ... You can then wash your material on a 30ºC wash with no colour loss.
Love this so much! She said she put it in a tumble dryer...can this go in a normal clothes dryer? I feel like paint would go everywhere and stain the dryer.
From Annie Sloan website: ;Once completely dry, iron or tumble dry the fabric to seal the colour. ... You can then wash your material on a 30ºC wash with no colour loss.
Lovely, but more than a little vague. How long do you leave the fabric in the paint? What settings do you use to dry it? After stenciling it, do you just let it dry, do you wash it again ? And how do you wash that blanket after? So many questions, so few answers...

Hi, Joann Jacquin! We think it's beautiful too! Annie's website says that you can wash your material on a 30°C wash with no color loss, but if you use a stronger quantity of paint in your dye, there might be a little more fading. You can learn more at: www.anniesloan.com/techniques/dip-dyeing-fabric-with-chalk-paint. Hope this helps!
Hi Anjuli M! According to Annie's website, you should dip your fabric in the dye, allowing the fabric to soak it in, and then agitate the fabric until the whole piece is evenly dyed. But she says not to leave the fabric in the dye to soak. You should remove it from the water and allow it to dry. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching The Design Network!
This is amazing. I love it. I would just like to ask though... after stencilling do you have to put it in the dryer again? And won't the paint go hard? One more question, what if you don't have a dryer?
Iron it-From Annie Sloan website: ;Once completely dry, iron or tumble dry the fabric to seal the colour. ... You can then wash your material on a 30ºC wash with no colour loss.
Fun video. I'm just wondering if the paint was properly mixed in, why was there a concern with the blotches of paint getting on the fabric before it was removed from the dye bath? If the paint was actually thoroughly mixed into the water before adding the fabric, there wouldn't be any blotches to be concerned with. Thankfully, it appears the end result didn't look blotchy. I see many possibilities with this technique. Also, at the beginning (the outside interview) the girl mentioned she had a plain raw silk runner that she wanted to change but the item she brought was definitely just a piece of linen fabric with selvedge edges. Just curious if anyone else noticed that?

Hi, +Ann Haws! We checked Annie's site and it says the following: To stencil fabric with Chalk Paint, apply with a sponge roller. There is no need to dilute the paint, but to keep the image from bleeding around the edges, try not to overload your roller with paint. Allow the fabric to dry naturally, then heat seal by tumble drying or pressing with a hot iron. Hope this helps!
