Very nice. I am actually getting ready to paint my cabinets in the same color. Annie Sloan has a great lacquer sealer/finish that you don't have to sand in between. Looks great! Thanks!
Thank you! Yes it does :) I have used it many times over the years. When this video was made they didn’t have a gloss finish, just the matte. Which I love but not what my client wanted.
I am getting ready to paint my kitchen cabinets. I have been painting for years.its great to see I have been doing it right watching your video.thank you
Can I just say THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for this?! I just tried chalk paint and GFHPF on top and completely ruined the top of my dresser. After watching another RUclipsr's video, I thought I was supposed to add a rather large amount of poly using a synthetic brush and apparently I waited too long to smooth things out and got the gnarliest globs. I'm about to have to sand down the entire top and start back at paint. I wish I would have watched this video before I got started. You are a great teacher!

Currently helping my sister paint her cabinets in her new house. The former homeowners did a cheap, lazy job trying to do distressed white look on them. Thanks for showing how to make the doors look so good!
Hi! I’m a stockist for Annie Sloan and you’re spot on. Thin first coat and large brush! I do all thin coats with water around (unless I’ve thinned ahead) as it moves easier. Especially with the European formula we now have. The water does not take the strength away...... that’s why color washes work! 🤓😉This paint rocks doesn’t it! Great job!
Thank you so much for your kind words! I need to make an updated video using the newer lacquer. That is what I use now... never enough hours in the day ❤️ (I am a stockist too :) )
I am so glad this came up on my you tube. You do a careful job, well explained. Am so glad because I am thinking of doing just this task. As an older person one wants to do it right and not waste effort. So pleasant a lesson giver. Thank you.

I am thoroughly enjoying watching your video. I have not finished it yet but I just had to stop and tell you this the detail in your work is beautiful. I have used General finishes paint and just love it. I painted a cabinet in my room and find it to be an excellent paint. It gives a very professional look to what I have painted. I am enjoying your video and thank you for sharing.
You have a great personality for this. I wish you would talk about the differences or the advantages of using A.S. chalk paint as opposed to interior acrylic.
I agree with you about lazy susans. I have a large heavy duty one someone discarded in alley. I've used it to hold one of those very heavy, large CRT televisions. In fact, I think it was created to swivel a large TV. If someone is shopping for similar, I would try an office, motel, or hospital supplier. I like lazy susans in several sizes for painting or crafting. Sometimes you don't want to constantly handle a piece more than necessary while you're working on it. I have a small table and the entire top swivels. My guess is someone used it for playing chess or some other board game. I love that one too and suppose it would not be difficult to build.
What a wonderfully produced video. :0) Your comfortableness with the process showed through your clear and precise directions allowing newbies like myself to feel more confident in attempting to emulate your work. Please continue to educate us on your techniques. Thank you.
mostly simple oh wow, thank you for such Ana amazing compliment. It means the world to me!! And no worries, we were all newbies once! Grab a brush, jump in, it’s fun!
C Clark thank you! My brushes are cleaned with basic dawn dish soap and hot water and then hung or laid flat. Never tip them up in a cup to dry, as it will rust out the metal.
It’s nice to see someone post a cabinet painting video that knows what they are doing! They turned out great! I will add that a final “light” sand to the top coat is usually recommended by the manufacturer when applying the product with a brush, foam pad or rag and it would have given the doors a more Flat sheen. Normally it’s recommended to use a fine grit steel wool, however, If my guess is correct then I’m guessing that the top coat you are using is a “polycrylic” of sorts which is not compatible with steel wool so a very high grit sanding pad or paper. Scotch-bright maybe? Just a little helpful tip 😁
Cara Hancox wow! Thank you so much for your kind words! If you check out my channel there are a few other cabinet tutorials with paint and wax or color choices :)
That is very good work. I really like that entirely neutral light olive color; pristine. Maybe antiquing the outer periphery of the chasm is a good idea. It certainly worked well enough. I might be too lazy to do that myself though.
@@OriginallyWorn my first project I think will be painting the counter tops. They are a "lovely" aqua color and the back splash has lots of blue to match! I'm so glad that paint offers a less expensive option for transformation than replacing whole kitchen!
Amy Jacob Paradise Farm oh yes! It is wonderful! I’m actually teaching a workshop in my shop tomorrow about painting backsplashes and countertops (and cabinets). It’s amazing what can be done. Thank you keep up the good work. I love the fact that you presented quality and time into your projects. That makes a huge difference...when you have some Free time, I could use you here in NC
Good results, I wanted to take time to help others by clarifying a couple of comments. Lacquer , polyurethane or other type of oil based products will yellow overtime, but waterwater-based Products such as poly acrylics Will not. A great way to the Degoss a surface besides sanding would be a liquid sanding solution that you can just apply with a spray bottle and clean off with a wet rag. This is a little safer method rather than sanding and risking possible exposure to lead poly coat.
Thomas Kleven Thanks for the tip on the degloss liquid sanding solution! And you are correct about the oil based products yellowing over time. Definitely not a good look on white! My cabinets are stained Honey Oak and have a very shiny oil based polyurethane finish. Should I degloss or sand before painting with the chalk paint?
@@deborahjellenburg4939 The only thing that I don't like about the use of Chalky paint is that you then need to use some type of top coat. Personally, I like using Valspar Cabinet Paint. If you look in the big box store you can find it. The paint comes in Semigloss and Satin, but the gloss is very toned down, meaning that it looks more like a flat finish on the display. There are two reasons why I like this paint. One, is that it is poly fortified, which means that it takes longer for the paint to dry, this will allow the paint time to level out more eliminating the brush strokes from the paint. Two is that it is an Enamel paint. Enamel is a generic term which means, it will dry down to a very hard durable finish. One other thing is that it has extra bonding agents which makes the paint super sticky, perhaps even enough to get away with not sanding. Lastly, this paint does not require a top clearcoat. I hope this helps!
Turned out beautiful!! I often ask myself why not just use a latex? Then I remember chalk paint is more environmentally better, virtually no smell, and cleans up easily, and so easy to make changes. The Lazy Susan is a great idea!!! Question? Why not just use a wax instead of the glaze? I know wax is basically the last step. Is it because it’s a kitchen cabinet? Last thing, who bored the cabinet for the new soft close gadgets? It’s another great idea. Thanks for sharing!
Hello! Thank you for your kind words! I actually do wax cabinets a lot and have videos on how to do that too. This was just an alternative for people that don’t want wax (like this customer did) I like to keep waxes & dark waxed together and poly & glazes together - not to mix types. We had a cabinet building company do this set but I actually learned how to do it after. Just takes a special Kreg jig attachment for your drill. Pretty easy actually.
Nice video! I wonder how white color would look? The gray is very nice tho. My brother said light sanding is really important between the different topcoats! The lazy susan is helpful idea.👏👏👏.
Did your chip brush need to be replaced at any point throughout the project? Like, did it harden? And you started with it totally dry? Thanks a million!
I bet I went threw a few of those brushes... but I was doing a whole Kitchen. I guess one would be fine for a top of a dresser. But I don’t think it hardened 🤔 and was totally dry, and I wiped it dry often in the project. ❤️
😂😂 you can do it!! I have faith in you! 😜 I have been working on our kitchen for 6 months slowly. Isn’t there some saying about how the cobblers kids never have shoes… same kinda thing I guess 🤪 glad the video helped you though ❤️
This is my first time using general finishes polycrylic + I’m using it on my chalk painted kitchen cabinets...do I apply it the same way to the cabinets as I would the doors?? I started to use it last night + it wouldn’t spread w a reg brush, so I stopped + thankfully found ur video! I used Dixie Belle chalk paint which I feel is thicker than Annie Sloan so I felt like it wouldn’t spread at all...hoping the foam brush will make all the diff! Thanks soooo much for this video!
Hey Rochelle, I have honey oak cabinets with a wood grain showing like the one in this video you are showing. this paint will cover my woodgrain like it did yours want it.
Brushing Annie Sloan paint like this will certainly help camouflage the grain. If you want to fill it completely I would suggest a grain filling primer first. (It’s kind of like a thin gel primer that gets in all the nooks)
Thanks for the video. It's the best one I've seen. I'm planning on doing my cabinets now because of how clear your instructions were. I'm planning on a blue. I like Annie Sloan Napoleanic Blue, but am wondering if that is to bright for cabinets?
Katherine Pye thank you! I do not think it is too bright, but you could also check out Annie Sloan Oxford Navy. It is a newer color that is a deeper, darker navy blue. Have fun :)
You got this! I’m guessing you mean fusion mineral paint? I have heard good things about it, but don’t really have much experience with it. I would see if you could find a cabinet video from their company to make sure the steps aren’t different. :)
I want to thank you for your video. I was very excited bc I bought French Linen yesterday before watching your video and my vanity is also in oak. I’ll send before and after pics. I also bought the AS clear wax. This will be my first big paint project. 😯
B B you’re very welcome! You will love French Linen, I have painted many projects with it - love it! Here is a video about doing cabinets with the wax - which I love too - ruclips.net/video/j09UR-QNmbw/видео.html have fun!!
Nice tutorial, and the cabinet door looks great. But also I hope you don't mind my saying that your makeup at the end of the video looks really nice. Maybe you should do a tutorial on that too!
Great video and very detailed. My cabinets have a thin coat of polyurethane on them. Do I need to strip this out before I start or move straight on to sanding? Thank you!
You do great work and explain very well❣️. Question: I’m want to refurbish my night stands. They are very worn on the top. Should sand them first and then prime before painting?
Hello, Great video! May you please let me know how long chalk paint last? I really love the finish of chalk paint but my only worry is having to do touch ups often.
Thanks for the great video! I have painted with Annie Sloan and used the wax. But I have never used the poly, but I hear it is better for cabinets. I'm just wondering how they hold up and how to do small repairs through the years on the doors?
Sarah Bailey hey! Thanks! I usually choose my top coat based on my customers familiarity with wax and care for it. Wax is easier to do and easier to repair in the long run. But “smudges” sometimes. General Finishes is beautiful and doesnt “smudge” like wax can but I feel is much harder to touch up and takes more time to complete.
Thank you so much for your tutorial on how to refinish the doors. This is exactly what i was thinking of doing to mine but didn't have a clue as to where to start. I'm a bit concerned as the finish on my doors is like some kind of plastic based stuff? Can i still use the same technique and try to paint them this way do you think. I'm in the UK so would probably have to source the products online. You are wonderful and talented at what you do. Thank you so much for taking the time to share with us. Shirley. X
Shirley Cranswick hey, thanks for your kind words. I would test it on the back of a cabinet first. Most materials work perfect to paint over, but no harm in testing first :)
Really enjoyed your video. I live in old farmhouse. The kitchen cabinets have been painted many times I think. Can I do a rough sand and still do your technique or would I have to do the more bare wood approach?
Yes I do want to sand I have washed them down and sanding will help them things out I don’t think them things ever been clean remodeling another place so yeah I’m sanding them down along with them walls if I had it I would tear everything out but unfortunately I don’t have that kind of money to just tear it all out. I have not gotten any paint yet but what will it cost if I went with this type
Hello Originally Worn, I loved your video. I have a question, my cabinets look very similar to the one you showed except that the wood grain is more pronounced and I'm afraid that it will show through the paint and will not look smooth like yours did, any suggestions to have a more smooth finish? any help is greatly appreciated.
P. Moody hello. You can start with a primer that is a wood grain filler. You will need to sand it before painting. And follow those instructions with which one you do.
Wow, you were very thorough. I have just starting looking into chalk paint and have painted kitchen cabinets in two of the homes I have owned with other paint. It is a LOT of work! I love the look you got but does it really take 30 minutes for one side of one door? Yikes.. I'm going to tackle office furniture first.. I hope it goes faster. Thanks for your video
You can do it faster when you aren’t explaining things to people ;) also, the fastest and easiest way is to use Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and wax. I have videos on that (one specifically for cabinets) too.
@@OriginallyWorn I have some furniture that I tried using normal latex on but even with all the steps of sanding, priming etc.. it has began peeling. The furniture is part real wood and I believe the rest is called MDF?? I believe it's a type of laminated/particle board material but I'm not positive. Would this paint work on that type of material? Your cabinets look beautiful!! I also have the same issue with our kitchen cabinets as I used valspar on them years ago so they are due for replacing but it's not in our budget so I may try to repaint if the holes and hinges aren't to worn. Any advice you may have would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you so much for this video!
Dawn S you can certainly paint that material in this way, but beware of the items you have already painted because your finish is only as good as what it is stuck to. So if you paint over peeling latex, when that latex peels it will take your new, expensive paint job with it.
Hey. I can’t tell you what Home Depot brand of paint to use, as I haven’t used any of theirs lately. Plus they carry many different types of paints. So not sure what one you are referring too, but in theory you may be able to. I believe this is a flat finish from general finishes, but the idea should tell you exactly what I used. (It’s on old video, I don’t remember, lol)
@@OriginallyWorn Thanks, I take your word. I will not use windex :) I just bought Annie Sloan chalk paint today. What kind of finish does Polycrylic paint? Shiny or matte?
Milena Pavliski different poly acrylics have different sheens. From matte to high gloss. Since this video came out, Annie Sloan has come out with a lacquer that is great to use that comes in matte or gloss. I also have videos on how to use wax (which I love too) I would talk with the store where you bought your Annie Sloan about your project and see what they recommend :)

Thomas Kleven Thanks for the info about the deglosser and the cabinet paint.
You’re a very talented lady. Thanks for the detailed video and tutorial!
Morgan valderaz thank you!!
Ditching The Grind 3 white looks great, although I wax that I instead of poly. :)
So detailed and informative, thank you! This is the best video I have seen on chalk cabinets.
Bridgette Ollenburger thank you so much! 😘😘😘
so very helpful - i am still new to this work, but you taught me a lot in your video! very nice, and specific! thanks for sharing
Kris thank you!!
Beautiful job. Would have liked to have seen the finished kitchen
Dol l thanks
Awesome, AWESOME Video!!! You've definitely given me some confidence to try. Thank you VERY much!!
Paul Nhar that’s so wonderful to hear!! Thank you ❤️❤️❤️
These look so nice! Wish we could see the final project on the video and the soft close hinge installation.
Ashley Lainhart thank you for your kind words! Those are points I will keep in mind for my next video :)
very nice color, when you said linen i expected an off white kinda color this is very different but getting popular ❤️
Thank you!! It really is getting super popular. This is the most popular sold color for cabinets in my shop. ❤️❤️
It's the best job I've seen in the chalk paint technique ... congratulations 👏👏👏
Rossy T wow ☺️☺️ thank you very much for your kind words!
Thank you so much! Frankly…will you come and finish my kitchen? LOL! 😆 actually you just gave me most valuable information which is so appreciated!
Hoping you had an easier time with this with the foam brush. That first coat is very draggy. Good luck to you. You can do this 👊❤️
Hey Rochelle, I have honey oak cabinets with a wood grain showing like the one in this video you are showing. this paint will cover my woodgrain like it did yours want it.
Brushing Annie Sloan paint like this will certainly help camouflage the grain. If you want to fill it completely I would suggest a grain filling primer first. (It’s kind of like a thin gel primer that gets in all the nooks)
Thank you for this video. It has given me some hope that I can do this.
You are welcome! You can! It’s not hard, just a bit time consuming.
wow, thanks for the detailed video. excellent and beautiful work.
Maxine Pierre thank you for the kind words!
This was a great video! Thank you so much for being so detailed in information and comprehensible! God bless!
Bailey Holder thank you! Glad you liked it!
What color is that? love it, Also this can be done over laminate...
Jo Jo hey! It is Annie Sloan French Linen. Yes, it can be done over laminate :)
I hope that this finish looks way better than other finishes because it's just a lot more work than regular paint that's for sure I hope it's worth it
Thanks for the video.
Have fun :)
I like the doors without the brown highlights. The doors are beautiful with that color.
Loved this video !!! I’m going to attempt my kitchen cabinets in black with FMP… I’m so nervous but 🤷🏽♀️… thank you for this video !
I don’t think I can attach pics to this.
B B no, but you can message me on fb with them if you want :)
Great tutorial! Very smooth finish!💯❣️
I wish I could have seen the finished project.
Hey! Thank you ❤️ yeah, I changed my website around since this video came out. So sorry! ❤️
Nice tutorial, and the cabinet door looks great. But also I hope you don't mind my saying that your makeup at the end of the video looks really nice. Maybe you should do a tutorial on that too!
MsTheUndone mind saying my makeup is good?!? Oh gosh no! You made me blush 😍 thank you so much for your kind words and I’m glad you liked the video!
Wow!!!!
I love it. Great presentation. Thanks
ida watters thank you!
Great video and very detailed. My cabinets have a thin coat of polyurethane on them. Do I need to strip this out before I start or move straight on to sanding? Thank you!
Brnguy80 hey! Thanks! No need to strip them at all :) you can sand if you would like (like I do) but a good cleaning is all really need.
Very helpful! They look beautiful 🙌🏻🌟 Thank you for sharing😊k
Kimberly Drake thank you for your kind words ❤️
You do great work and explain very well❣️. Question: I’m want to refurbish my night stands. They are very worn on the top. Should sand them first and then prime before painting?
Thanks! No need to, but I would follow this video of mine for your nightstands ruclips.net/video/7W2CIcMVBSI/видео.html
But you can sand if you want a smoother finish :)
Hello,
Great video! May you please let me know how long chalk paint last? I really love the finish of chalk paint but my only worry is having to do touch ups often.
Chantel Todd I would say not to worry about that. If you clean properly it should last as long as any other painted surface would.
Hello! Thank you! You certainly can just do a rough sand, or no sand at all when using Annie Sloan paint :)
Really inspired by your video. Thank you. Look forward to seeing the entire kitchen.
Lori Fraser thank you!
Audrey Young cost depends on the size of your kitchen and the color you choose and what tools/brushes you already have. Maybe $150-200?!? Rough guess
Originally Worn well I don’t need any thing but the paint because my dad has everything else ☺️
Thx for sharing! Have you ever bleached out soft solid all the way through pine? I painted bottom black and love them 7 years ago. Thx!
Thanks! I haven’t done it personally but have seen it! It looks cool!
@@OriginallyWorn is there a particular wood grain filler you recommend? Thank you!
P. Moody sorry, no. I don’t use them so I don’t know a ton about them. So sorry!
Super nice! Thank you for sharing your technique.
Thank you ❤️
THANK YOU SO MUCH, IT WAS SO DETAILED. IT TURNED OUT BEAUTIFUL. CAN THIS BE DONE ON BEDROOM WOOD FURNITURE?
Candy J thanks for your kind words! You bet it can be done on bedroom furniture. It actually can be done on Most surfaces :)
Great finish, and great color,
What shin is color though..?
Matte, satin or semigloss..?
Can we try same color from Homedepot for cabinets doors..?
@@OriginallyWorn really appreciate ur reply.
Thanks
The color looks fabulous. Could you tell me what color in Rustoleum paint would be compatible with the French Linen? How durable is the finish?
jolynn beck hey. I am sorry, I don’t know that. Those are different product lines and I don’t use it. Finish is great and very durable.
At the central picture of your video what's the colour if te right cabinet which it seems like chocolate colour?
All the cabinets are painted with Annie Sloan paint. The black is Graphite, the middle is duck egg blue and the taupe is French linen.
Hi I love what you did with these cabinet doors can I do the same technique with furniture
What is the best finish to give a matt look for black cabinets?
I'm learning the MOST from your video. Thank you! May I use windex to clean it prior to chalk paint?
Milena Pavliski thanks so much. I would not suggest you clean with windex.
