My next project is going to be a faux cement wall in my bathroom. Staying home during all the craziness right now makes for the perfect time to do it.

As someone who paints a lot of furniture and has used both the Annie Sloan & Waverly - plus their brushes.. Waverly brushes suck. Annie Sloan are really good however I've found the Dixie Bell brushes are far far superior to any others I've used. Waverly paint rocks. Seriously rocks. I love painting with it. One thing I would suggest though is when you add water to thin out the Waverly paint paint on the surface then spritz with some water. You'll have better control. Different Waverly chalk paint colors vary in how think they are. Waverly wax can be a little tricky to work with and not end up with brush marks. But once you get the technique down.. it's a wonderful wax! The finish is gorgeous and durable. I personally prefer to apply the Waverly wax with a cloth. Annie Sloan has some gorgeous colors I've not been able to recreate by mixing Waverly paints so there are times I break down and buy the expansive Annie Sloan paints. Not often anymore though. I'm not knocking Annie Sloan paints - they are wonderful! But they're very expensive paints. Dixie Bell is a good middle as far as price between the two and an absolutely excellent paint. All that said.. I bought a few synthetic brushes at my local home improvement center that are my absolute favorites.. bar none! I paid about $14 each for them. One last thing.. when using the Waverly antiquing wax.. don't mix it with the clear. It just turns everything muddy when you do and you don't get the antiquing definition.

I totally agree. I don't know why she said they look the same when Waverly gives superior coverage. (She did say Annie Sloan was her friend). Annie Sloan requires the use of at least 30 to 50% more product when it needs one or two more coats than Waverly.

I could see a large difference on the video for the comparison. Waverly did a much better job at coverage and vibrance. I use the antique wax paint full strength and it does awesome! You can even use it as a regular stain on bare wood! I don’t like the Waverly brushes, so I agree with you there. They are too stiff and the bristles fall out too much.

Chalk paint is matte or flat paint with calcium carbonate added. You can buy a bag of calcium carbonate for about $13.00. The simple formula is on the bag. It turns any paint into chalk paint.

I love the Annie sloan for several reasons. Perhaps the most important is that I was raised in a family of wood workers who thought it sacrilege to paint anything. I love that with using Annie Sloan ( sanded lightly) paint you can still feel the grain of the wood and see the craftsmanship of the piece. Any latex or acrylic based paint will no do this. 2nd, I can paint 5-6 medium sized pieces, accent tables, chairs etc, or a whole large china cabinet or dining set with one can of Annie Sloan. It is so versatile and the palette is perfect for mixing and blending. When you do the math Waverley 8 ounce is $6 ( x-4 =$24) and Annie Sloan 32 ounce is $ 38. I do understand if you are only doing one small piece that the Waverley is cheaper, but the results are not that beautiful old world finish.

I painted a thrifted end table for my hubby (with Waverly) It was really hard to get him to give it up for new furniture. 😂 He's a mechanic so things get greasy. The waverly held up through many washings, a mechanic and 3 dogs.

Sometimes there’s a few crafting items you just can’t cut corners. Like brushes, good ones if taken care of will last for years. If AS dark wax is superior, it’s worth the extra cost, you’ll use less in the long run too.

Enjoyed your vid. Have the same opinion about annie sloan vs. waverly in my experience....stumbled upon Folk Art brand chalk paint which I found at Michaels. I've used it on several small projects, and actually prefer it to Waverly, although I've heard this brand is actually part of the Waverly line. It costs about $2 but the bottles are small (at least at the store where I shop) so it would of course add up if one needed enough for a large project...but a little goes a long way, and their color palette is for me more extensive than the waverly. Maybe if you have a chance to try it, I would love your opinion. :)

I really appreciate this video. I’ve tried numerous brands of chalk paint and milk paint. It’s really good to see this side by side comparison. I have found that a good brush makes a huge difference. I’ve learned to invest in some really good brushes. Personally, I prefer Paint Pixie brushes over Annie Sloan. But, Annie Sloan brushes are definitely better than Waverly. After all the brands of paint that I’ve tried, DIY brand paint (by Debi Beard) is my absolute favorite. It is clay-based, with some chalk properties. Very highly pigmented, water-based, and all natural.

  • @maryjanesteinbrecher3953

I always used a container like a metal pie plate that I can wash and use repeatedly. I put my ASCP in it as a puddle then add about a tsp or so water to it. Mix then paint my clean surface using my Annie Sloan brush. A wet sponge distresses if you dont like dust. I use clear wax altho have pieces I've never waxed and the paint held up. Also I store my paint on a plastic dairy creamer bottle from Carnation removing the label so the paint color is clearly visible. I dont paint as often anymore altho my paint stays nice ( in the bottle not in a can) and can shake/ mix very easy. Stockists are getting harder to find.
Good to see your challenge. As for myself ,it would be hard to spend money on hard brushes especially if they loose bristles or less than desirable wax.

I’ve not used Annie Sloan simply due to the price. Honestly, after trying Waverly over a year ago, I’ve not gone back to anything else. The coverage is awesome and I love the color selection. The dark wax does take a bit of getting used to, but I’ve found that adding a tiny bit of clear wax to my wipe off rag keeps everything nice and prevents the muddy effect. Thank you for this video. I was impressed to see my favorite paint provide even better coverage watered down than the expensive stuff. 🙂

The Waverly without question has superior coverage. The two do not look the same at all and the side with Annie Sloan needs at least one or two more coats. I have collected several pieces of furniture to refinish and flip and I have been researching videos like yours, Kacha's and Bella Renovare's for weeks. This is super helpful! Thank you!! I know now to never buy Annie Sloan especially when the price is so inflated to the point it seems exploitive. I am now super curious about the difference between Waverly and Dixie Bell. Unfortunately lately Waverly is extremely low on stock so I am trying to decide if I might just go with Behr chalk paint (they have beautiful colors too) or I might make my own, at least on my first piece.
