I've had the atoto a6 for 3 years now and have generally been happy with its performance.
I have made several 14 hour trips using this headunit, and overheating has never been a problem "it did get hot enough to burn you but not hot enough to cause it to fail".
The Bluetooth module however did die on the second year, though I'd chock that up to bad luck.
Oh on a separate note one of the major selling points of this type of headunit is its boot time. From turning the key to music playing it is faster than many factory headunits.

Thanks for this! I bought this a while back for my Civic and just got around to installing it with the Sub/Amp. I was using the standard 75% volume (about 35) and it seemed really low while doing gains. I just ordered an AudioControl LC1 to fix the voltage. One thing you can do if you don't want to turn up the head unit so high is purchase a line driver. I ended up just getting a cheap one from a company called install bay. It says it can boost the signal up to10v RMS. I found that it sounded distorted with the gain all the way up and left it around 4V which is a big improvement over 1V or so the head unit produced. I'm using it to send an audio signal to the amp for my door speakers. Turning the head unit up half way sounds louder and cleaner than when I used to turn the head unit up much higher.

Thanks for this review, I just picked up one of these brand new off of eBay for 150 bucks. I'm going to be installing it either today or tomorrow, I may be able to answer my own question but I am curious as to whether or not you can disable the onboard amplifier. I'm a little concerned about the heat that you are talking about being generated by this unit, I'm replacing a very nice 2017 model Kenwood that has a built-in cooling fan that turns on and off, and it has been rock solid and bulletproof. Of course, the screen doesn't hold a candle to this one, which is why I'm replacing it. Anyway, I've heard about a few heat issues with this and I'm not going to be using the onboard amplifier whatsoever, just my OEM amplifiers that are built into my old Honda Element. Element so if there is a way of maybe turning off the onboard amps on the unit it would probably be beneficial. Do you know if you can do this? Thanks again for a great review

I had a Pioneer stereo that I loved for three years. Then, just like everyone else's, it died because of the trash tier SD cards they put the firmware on. They don't release the firmware, so it was basically dead. I replaced it with an Atoto unit, and it's been so much better. The screen is waaay better quality, and the audio is not as good as the Pioneer, but still good enough. The feature set is better too. Plus, without the SD card flaw, it should last me more than a few years. At this point, I would struggle to call Pioneer "name brand". More like expensive junk.

So I finally took the plunge and installed this thing into my Honda Element 2003. The thing that pushed me over the edge was a guy who has a YT channel called "lifewithabox" who has a f7 Pro 10.1 and I liked the way it looked on his video so I thought I would give it a whirl. My impressions:
    1) using the factory amps and sub, the sound quality is, as expected, worse than my DDX-9904S. No big surprise there. Not horrible, except the subwoofer I would estimate has maybe 1/6th the output using the same amp. I do not think the DAC in this unit is really that comparable to my Kenwood, it sounds a little tinny in comparason, but it's passable.
    2) I noticed that after about 4-5 seconds after you turn this headunit off or deapply power/remove the screen, a "thump" or "thud" can be heard through the speakers. I don't like this, but I don't think it's big enough to do any damage to my woofers(hopefully)
    3) At first, the unit would play Android Auto for a couple of minutes and then turn itself off(Source OFF). This was annoying AF. I clipped the stripped ends off of the unused wires just in case some of them were touching together/shorting out to cause this issue, did not help. Replaced my USB cord going to my phone, that seemed to stop it from doing this. The USB cord must have to be a certain quality or gauge or something or else this issue occurs.
UPDATE: Wireless AA works flawlessly so I'm just going to use that from now on
Also worth mentioning, I have a digital voltmeter in my car and this thing is a POWER HOG. My vehicle ran at 14.1 volts with my previous stereo, this brings it down to a maximum of 13.8 while charging the battery
    4) Screen is a huge fingerprint magnet, hard to keep it clean, and it is almost too big especially at native 720p resolution, it seems to dominate my view
UPDATE: I'm used to it now and I kinda like it, except for when I'm shifting gears and accidentally hit the bottom of the screen, which is rare but happened once
    5) I HATE the screen dimming when you turn your lights on, it makes it hard to see the screen during the day(even at max brightness) and it's not very adjustable, so I will probably be tearing apart dash again to clip the dimmer wire just for this reason
    6) so far I have not found a USB flash drive with a file system that this thing supports, unless all of mine are just too big (128GB) - on the other hand I do have an SDXC 256GB card in the slot that it seems to recognize, maybe I'll have to put all my media files on that instead
UPDATE: Plays NTFS formatted drives just fine. Annoyance: Android Auto always trumps whatever you may be listening to and starts playing as soon as it automatically connects. Lame
also, sometimes the unit does not initialize the SD card properly on startup, it's hit or miss
    7) most annoying thing so far is that volume down makes the tracks skip forward if you push on the top of the button. Weird.
UPDATE: Caused by the button mount plastic being pushed in slightly, fixed by applying pressure to the sides
Weird and glitchy but functional. My own personal opinion is this, it might be the best 10.1 inch available for under $300, IF you are using the built-in amplifier. If you are planning on using factory or aftermarket off-board amps, this is (IMHO) not the unit for you unless you have additional line drivers laying around to boost up the preouts, in particular the subwoofer out. That subwoofer output is tragic, unfortunately.
I have hardware revision 2.0, and I have not noticed any heat issues to speak of.

After adding a line driver for the sub and still being underwhelmed with the performance and sound, and now having a significant parasitic drain on the battery, I would have to say I regret purchasing and installing this unit. Atoto, Joying, Daisata, Teyes and a few others are the better ones. Realistically once they have a few upgrades like higher RCA voltage output and some software refinement in the coming years there is no way any of these traditional groups will hold up. Traditional corps are years behind and don't take any real risk or spend the R&D necessary to push the envelope. That is why a lot of these android units tend to be more raw.

I think the two things that are big with people that want these are that digital spdif and/or the ability to use the android store. Aka its an android tablet in your car. You might want to explore the use of apps in android headunits in the future. Netflix, Offline Maps(Google Maps). I have even seen people streaming games onto their android head unit from playstations like red dead redemption. I think the ability to use an app like torque to read from a bluetooth OBD device for all sorts of different sensors the computer looks at is really cool and the ability to say read engine codes on the fly.

It doesn't matter for the sub out since its mono. If your amp requires both input RCA's to be used, just buy a Y splitter.

@DIYAudioGuy sorry, a little more description.... press and hold the mute/off button for 3 or 4 seconds, screen turns off, then release button. Key still in accessories position and the rear speakers still play the radio in a lower audio but through the red and white rca jacks that goes to the amp. If I unplug the rca jacks the sound goes away or If I turn the key off to get out of the car it's stops playing the radio too.

"most android car head units are duds" - Um, sounds like you have been out of the game for awhile as the android head units for the last couple years are way better than the early days. Lots of review videos if you do a little searching. There are about 3-4 brands to stay with to be safe and retain proper customer service\support. Android head units have the potential to destroy the Name Brand market if some company would step up and manufacture them with the same plug and play that Kenwood, Alpine, Pioneer, and others enjoy. Android is open source so its not super hard to do some coding that would surpass any Name Brand out there.

    • @DIYAudioGuy
      @DIYAudioGuy  Год назад +2

How many of those review videos do any actual testing? I see a lot of them that just power on the unit and go over the features. All of those features don't matter if the darn thing puts out a dirty distorted signal.
