Thanks for this. I made a stunning bag out of an old jean that I cut in to patches for my sister's birthday. I'm super proud how it came out. By the way I love your furbaby
I am so glad that I found you! My 11 year grand daughter wanted to make lined tote bags for the females in our family as Christmas gifts. We have made approximately 5 bags of various sizes and fabrics to date. She can now make the totes, all alone, with me just there for problems and handling the iron. Thank you for your simple easy to follow tutorials.
That's so awesome! I'm glad my video was able to help her out! Make sure to subscribe because I post a new video every Wednesday and I have more bag tutorials coming in 2017 :)
Thank you for the simple to make tote bag tutorial. I am new to sewing and was asked to make basic tote bags for a women's shelter. I zipped one up quickly and easily and know the ladies will love them and have so many uses for them. Thank you.
This is so so good. Elderly mother's birthday next month, but just lost my job and wiped out by a vet bill... Now I have a beautiful bag to give her, with customised short handles to her taste. Thank you, Whitney! x
I've just come across your channel and wanted to thank you for your clear tutorial. I've made my first two totes! It's a bit addictive, especially the bit where you pull it all through. For some reason I didn't believe it would work and it did! A practical piece that's easy and a lot of fun to make. Thank you once again for sharing such a great video x
This is great video, I have referred this video to a lot of people. When leaving an opening for the bag to turn the bag out, I leave the opening at the top of the bag between one of the handles. When I turn the bag around and iron it down I close the opening and then top stitch the bag, usually I top stitch it twice around and don't see where your opening was. Thank you!
I've been card making for a while but had a project in mind to try some sewing again after getting some basic instructions on making a little bag to house a piece of card making equipment from a friend. I've been looking for videos on how to make bags ever since and this one is brilliant! Absolutely brilliant! Thank you so much. I'm going to try my project in a couple of weeks without fear! Thank you!
I made several tote bags watching your tutorial.I have had my purse bag for 4 years. The only thing different I did was I added fleece to the handles for a cushion feel. Thanks for you videos. They are easy to follow.
Thank you so much for your video! I have now sewn multiple tote bags for the shoebox ministry (Operation Christmas child) for the second year now. The bags are quality! Many children will enjoy them I'm sure. Thank you Whitney!
I have referred back to this video several times. I've gotten the tote bag down pat now. Thank you! If I could post pics I would. I just watched your DIY 5 Minute Zip project and that's next on my list. As a new "sewer" you have made it so much easier for me. Thank you!!
+Cathy Fijalkovic I'm so glad that my videos are helping you :) If you have a facebook you can post pics on the Whitney Sews facebook page for me to see.
This is an excellent tutorial. I was able to make a tote and it came out quite nicely. The tutorial was easy to watch, to the point, I did not feel like my time was being wasted, and the instructions were clear. Thank you so much!
I made this a couple years ago for my husband's lunch bag, I measured a little smaller to accommodate his protein shakes. He's gotten so many compliments on it! I'm back again to make another one for him bc it's time to replace the old one. I really like this tutorial bc it's so simple and the end result is just so nice! Thank you 😊
So easy to follow! Turned out beautifully. I added 2 inside pockets. I sewed the to the lining in the same color as the outside of the bag. Incredibly cute!!
Hello Whitney!! What a cute tote that was!! You made it so simple to sew. Thanks a lot for sharing. Just one thing, I found it much more easier to stitch the handles on the right side of the main fabric first and then I completed the project.
I just love your tutorials! They are clear, simple and fun...just perfect for teaching my six and eight year old nieces to start creating their own treasures! Please keep these tuts coming, I am enjoying watching a few here and there and you are inspiring me to get back to the machine. You are like a breath of fresh air doll...keep up the good work!
I just found you're youtube channel, been wanting to try and make a Tote bag. I followed you're direction and Made one.. it was so easy.. my first ever tote bag, and Im happy with it.. Thank you so much for sharing your talent
This was so much more easier to understand than other videos - I made a long lined bag for my Pilates stuff - top tip, ensure the 4 pieces of inner and outer fabrics are exactly the same size.
Thank you Whitney! I made a tote with additional pockets inside (which didn't turn out quite as I liked them to). Your instructions are super easy to follow, which gave me the courage to start the project.
I'm so glad my tutorial helped you gain some extra sewing confidence! Don't worry that it didn't turn out just right the first time. I've been wanting to do a video about how to add pockets to a DIY bag...hopefully I'll get it filmed soon :)
I'm a late-bloomer in sewing. This wonderful tote tutorial was just enough inspiration for me to decide to make one instead of buying.. The instructions are easy to follow! PS. I love the tote you made - so cute with color coordination.
Whitney you are amazing. Been only following you for a few months but have learnt so much. I have made many of your projects and love each and every one of them. Thank you for giving me the courage to get the sewing machine out x
Thanks so much! I really appreciate you watching my videos and I'm glad they are helping you learn to sew :) I would love to see some pics of the things you've made!
Awesome tutorial! You really made it easy! I love my new bag. I added a flower to the front and a piece of fabric covered cardboard in the bottom of the bag, so it would keep its squared off shape.
Thanks to you (and my friend that introduced me to your website), this 60 year old beginner made this bag! Your instructions are so clear and easy, even I got it! Just wondering if you have a tutorial to add an outside pocket to this bag? Thanks again!
Whitney - thanks for an easy to follow tutorial. I added pockets inside and used tote bag straps from Joann's. Also my outside material wasn't quite wide enough, so I added a contrasting color to the top and bottom and also used it for the lining.. Normally I would have used material that didn't need to be added to, but it's Downton Abbey fabric showing the home....and it's my friend's favorite show. I know she'll love the bag and I couldn't have done it without your easy steps.
Brilliant. As a sewing newbie this was so easy to follow and I whipped up my first tote in about an hour. Now I want to make some more in different sizes. Thanks Whitney, great video tutorial. :)
Just discovered you today, wow thanks. I made a great lined tote bag using this video. I just got the strap the wrong way round, but I corrected it. The whole make took only 3 hours. not bad for my first attempt. I will be making more and hopefully from more of your tutorials, you explain things so well. I am a great upcycler rarely buying anything new, so I will be enjoying more of my sewing machine. Thanks Whitney! :)
I am in my very early 40's and am learning how to really use a sewing machine. I have never done anything more than repairs and decorative pillows and pillow cases. Thank you for this video as it was SO VERY EASY to follow. I completed a bag for my sister with major success
I made one for my daughter - I added a pocket inside. I did mess up by twisting one of the straps. She loves it! Perfect for her knitting and the pocket holds her book - she just started reading and knitting, age 7, so it is perfect!
I just finished this and it turned out perfect! I was looking for a simple bag to make, as I am still pretty new to sewing, and this was exactly what I was looking for. The only part that was confusing was when you said to put the straps between the layers of fabric - it took me a few minutes to figure out which layers. Anyways I love my new bag so thanks for making this great video!
Thank you, Whitney. I love your video and made your lined tote bag for my daughter, You are easy to listen to... Sewing was on my bucket list .. I love crafts and I am a crocheter but sewing made me nervous. I tried going to a class a few years ago... The teacher was upset because I did not know how to sew... and would not let me ask questions. Then a few months ago I bought a class online but they are so wordy and talk so slow. Did not work out for me. So I tried RUclips and found you. You have a great voice and friendly and to the point. and i love you have extra info video if needed. I even find myself listening to you getting into Coso with your husband and the yard sale finds... 8) Again thank you.
I’ve created 4 bags like this from concert shirts using this technique. It worked out great! All 4 sold in my Etsy shop. I’ve tagged you in my IG posts. Thank you for this tutorial!
Aloha all y'all... I certainly enjoy the simplicity and ease of construction of many of your DIY projects... completely overlooking your complete disregard for 𝒔𝒆𝒘𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒆𝒅 𝒍𝒊𝒎𝒊𝒕𝒔 ... LOL pedal to the metal and straight on until dawn... (grin) * * * Your techniques amaze and inspire me to alter things to suit my own techniques and purposes... thank you for that... * * * Until that time
Just followed your lined tote tutorial and it is brilliant!!! Thank you so much! Having a look at your other projects now! Very easy to and clear to follow! XX
Whitney, I love your tutorial. I have searched forever for a simple easy to do, easy to understand tut on a bag like this. Thank you so much, I'm making bags to sell this summer at a craft fair to supplement my retirement income and this is perfect. I like to make them with charm packs for a patchwork look. I will post one on my FB page and tag you with it! Thanks again.
I am so happy! Just found this tutorial after looking over a bunch of DIY tote bags on google that I just did not understand. I look forward to using this video to help me make this bag!
I was making a couple of Halloween totes for my 2 lil grandkids. I had all the fabrics cut out and ready to sew, but I just couldn't put the steps together in my brain (Grammy moment, or maybe I'd eaten too much candy..lol). I googled for video tutes and found yours. Thank you so much! I've got 2 smiling lil grandkids who thank you as well!
I just made one of these for the beach. I added pockets. It came out perfect. Your tutorials are so easy to follow, you explain the steps really well. :D Thanks!!

Thank you for this! I was able to whip up 2 bags for my kids to use as their trick or treat bags. It only took me an hour to do both from start to finish. And I am a beginner sewer.

Thank you Whitney for a very helpful tutorial, I've just started out learning to sew and I got the bag right the first time. It was very logical and clearly explained!
TY, this is just what I needed. My granddaughter asked me to make her a tote bag for her ballet class. I have to put a couple of pockets inside on the lining, but that should be pretty easy.
I made this bag for my daughter to use trick-or-treating and it was so easy to understand the instructions. Would you consider doing a tutorial for a basket apron? Your tutorials are the best for beginning sewers like myself.
Cute bag! I love the detail on the outer material that you used. This is perfect for me to make instead of a large detailed purse like I made before... way too busy for that 😕 So yay my step mom who is coming into town in a couple of days will get her surprise after all 😁 Thx!
You make the best tutorials! So easy to follow. I received about 50 upholstery sample books from a store that went out of business. Do you have any good ideas for using them? I've made bags and runners.
You are doing a great job. and your dog is adorable!! But thank you for your visual well spoken instructions!!!!! Nicely done, and I needed this. I am always struggling with the inside outside turning upside down leave a hole in lining pull bag thru..... AHHHHHHHHH:) So I am watching you tube for lots of good instructions and the visual is so helpful!
Thank you for your very easy method of making a tote. You are very sweet and fun to watch and listen too. I like your sewing machine in the background. You made a pretty tote. God Bless.
I am going to use this pattern to make two "Trick or Treat" bags for my grandsons. I plan to embroider on the sides and put their names on them. Thanks for the video.
Hi Whitney! I did a bag but not good enough to show you. My very 1st one. Would you do some tutorials on making 18" doll clothes from a pattern? I would like that! I can understand your instructions! Thank you for all you share. Bless you!
Great video!! Making one of these bags for my granddaughter! Love your work and your videos are so clear and easy to understand! Thanks for all your hard work!
haha...I just re-read my comment and of course I meant to say 'tote' rather than 'tot'...although I think any 'tot' would love a version of this 'tote'...:)
Thanks! I love totes so much because I always have too many things to carry! I hope you'll check out the other tote tutorial I posted yesterday! It is my favorite one :)
Awesome tutorial! That was EXACTLY what I needed to be able to complete a project I'm working on. Do you make more complex bags? I'd love to see tutorials if so. Thanks so much!
Hi Whitney-- I love this video. Well done. I have a question for you. When you stitch diagonally at the corners and are leaving 4", how wide does that give you for the width of the tote bag?
+Kelly Webster I'm glad you like them :) I'm working on a new one right now that should be up in a day or two, so make sure you're subscribed so you don't miss it or any of my other ones.
I’ve seen many tote tutorials and I found yours to be the most concise and easiest to follow. So easy and simple! Thank you Whitney!
Thanks for this. I made a stunning bag out of an old jean that I cut in to patches for my sister's birthday. I'm super proud how it came out. By the way I love your furbaby

Beautifully done!! That fabric is lovely. Do you have a tut for one with waterproof lining and zipper?
This was so easy to follow! I'm determined to learn how to sew this year and your channel has been such a great help to me so far!
Hi Whitney-- I love this video. Well done. I have a question for you. When you stitch diagonally at the corners and are leaving 4", how wide does that give you for the width of the tote bag?
Thank you so much for a great and detailed tutorial! I was able to make a beautiful tote thanks to you! Can't wait to see your other videos!
No prob! I'm glad that you like the tutorial :)
Just made her bag. Came out great. Pay attention to when she says “right side.” I almost made it to where the outside part was with seams showing.
Yep, anytime I say right sides o wrong sides it's important to do it that way
Thanks so much, Whitney! Please keep cranking out the how-tos. They're very helpful. Have a great day! :D
+Kelly Webster I'm glad you like them :) I'm working on a new one right now that should be up in a day or two, so make sure you're subscribed so you don't miss it or any of my other ones.
