I like the pitch for "live service". The idea that a game stays fresh as thing happen and stuff is added to a game in real time, a push and pull between the devs and players. BUT! the term very quickly changed into a calendar of new things to buy in a shop and JUST enough around it to keep a player there, "engaged", and buying. A store with flashing lights and rotating product. Gaming as made by the fashion industry.

Tbh while Fortnite defo popularized it, I personally think it does the ACTUAL "live service" part great since it's updated frequently with a lot of content and tbh the battlepasses are quite easier to complete than other live service games lmaoo
Sea of Thieves, Splatoon 3, Deep Rock Galactic, and of course, Helldivers 2 are also great live-services! It's just that the ones mad by notorius AAA companies aren't that good (of course there exeptions to this which are good games like Fortnite and Splatoon 3)!

There have been so many times I've started to reload and suddenly need to dive away from a threat, roll over to return fire from prone, only to realize my Diver never finished reloading. He ripped out the clip with 4 bullets left in it because I need a full clip right now, but he didn't get the chance to slap a new one in, or he did but didn't get to rack it, so it doesn't fire. So you panic, thinking your gun is empty, and instead of racking the slide to get a bullet in the chamber, you switch to sidearm to defend yourself.
Every gun has so many reload states and they can all be interrupted. It's such an underappreciated mechanic.

Very detailed and well put-together video! However, I could have missed it, but I feel like it needs to be pointed out:
The PAID PREMIUM CURRENCY, Super Credits, CAN BE EARNED IN MISSION and are not required to be paid for.
They are among many of the other currencies able to be found during a mission. In theory, if you collected enough, and used the warbond progression to also unlock batches of Super Credits via normal play, you could end up never paying a single dollar for all the premium warbonds. Medal progression is just slow enough and super credit acquisition is just fast enough, that you are likely to get super credits enough to open up a warbond before you even finish filling in an entire warbond. I understand the principle of the cash shop not being great, but the fact they even let you unlock it AT ALL for free is kind of staggering compared to most other live service games in the current landscape.

Wait... Super Credits, though you can pay IRL money for it, you can easily acquire in game... Whenever you go to a point of interest on the map, there is a chance that there are stashes of the different currencies at the point, and they will ALWAYS spawn. The same number of Requisition Slips, Medals, and Super Credits spawns no matter what the difficulty, so playing at lower difficulties allows you to more easily farm things. There are two main benefit from playing at higher difficulties, first is the end rewards multiplier gets increased, so more EXP for leveling (its all cosmetic after level 25), and more Requisition Slips for unlocking Stratagems (you will unlock all of the stratagems pretty quickly), and the second, is that you are only able to get samples of differing rarities depending on the difficulty, 4 for orange, 7 for pink. There are a couple minor benefits of difficulty, which include having a bigger impact on the numbers in the grand strategy side of things.
YOU DONT NEED TO SPEND A SINGLE CENT TO GET SC. I gathered enough SC to unlock my first "premium warbond" at about level 15 from just playing the game and cleaning out the maps when possible. The only thing you will likely feel extremely short on (at least for quite a while), will be samples, and that is all gathered from playing missions and actually collecting them while you play.

It had a lot more of an urban combat feel do to it being in established cities and towns rather than sparsely populated frontier operations, more than once it they'd had
special versions of even those missions where it was nighttime, foggy, and you had to use sidearms only while escorting documents or VIP's, mind you the sidearm

ZERO dollars were stolen the ONE time PSN was breached. XBL cost people thousands of dollars, weeks of time and months of no account access only to be given 14 days free after they had to fight to get their account back and get their money back from their banks
Protip though, literally everything gets hacked every single day. Its hilarious though when people try to claim its only Sony and still push the garbage trash "it happens all the time".

Helldivers 2 is amazing because it forces you to work together in ways never seen before in a game. It reminds me of Lethal Company in a way, how you can be antagonistic to your friends and still get the job done when it’s needed. On top of that, it also has the ability to make you feel as if you are really in a fight for your life with a friend. An example of this is when me and my friend were ending a mission and on our way to extract, at this point we had to make a division because we were running out of time and the bug hordes were becoming unstoppable. Since my role in the game when playing together is to be the crowd disperser, in charge of mowing down the massive numbers of enemies while my friend takes down the enemies too big or too armored for me to handle, I decided to call in my HMG turret and hold them off long enough to allow my friend to extract.
I wasn’t able to hold them off long, so I told him to drop his last cluster bomb before he embarked. By sheer luck he over threw it and I had no more than a second to run and dive out of the way of it, narrowly avoiding a charger as well. I could see the path before me, it was narrow, but clear, so I dropped a napalm strike at my feet and ran for sweet liberty. The strike somehow managed to not kill me and held off the bugs long enough for me to board the pelican without a second to spare. Literally! The timer was at 00:00:00, it went zero the second I boarded and we both extracted and it was the most XP and requisition I have ever made in a single mission to this day.

They are trying to find a sweat spot where guns have their own pro's and cons so there isn't just 1 gun that does everything. They try and be reactive and responsive to the community so if they introduce something that is universally hated (recent ricochet changes), it will probably be changed or reverted.

40:32 It runs VERY well on Linux & Steam Deck. No complaints except occasional connection errors mid game but I think all players are experiencing that issue. Also it gets a bit frame studdery on Helldive difficulty when there are TONS of enemies on screen during extraction. Overall tho it runs really well. I have 300+ hrs in game, every upgrade, every warbond item & all currencies are maxed out. No intention of slowing down.

Works on the Steam Deck, though performance is not great unless you really turn down the settings, nor does HD2 like the Deck going to sleep (outside the fact its an online game). Runs great on my desktop Linux PC though, ignoring the recent patch that killed performance, no issues with the anti cheat on a normal desktop Linux install. Anti cheat is stuck in it's sandbox and can't install its rootkit like parts because its not running Windows.

As a live service game, Helldivers 2 doesn't have that FOMO or exploitative factor you see in other live service titles. The battle pass system, called Warbonds, has no expiration, and no spending of real money to advance in tier. The only thing you can spend your real money on, is armor that shows up in the shop, but with the way that the armor stats work, you're never gonna feel like you're missing out if you don't buy a piece of armor from that shop, unless you like the look of it. You can also find Super Credits, the currency you buy, in game when you play if you choose to explore. More live service games needs to follow this example.

There is one other game that I find to have similar qualities, if a bit different 'general' feel. Except for the swarms in harder difficulties... they're pretty much spot on with each other. That game is Deep Rock Galactic.
I would love for your thoughts on it. However I do have one recommendation to help you in the game. Play a bit with your friends and learn some of the game. But when you are starting to get a good feel for it. This is probably the only game I'll give this to... but play with rando's. 90% of the people are great and helpful, for things you don't get when only playing with mics, as well as fun voice lines that bring a lot to the experience which are easy to miss.
The 1% are genuinely toxic, with the rest 9ish percent that just speed through missions with blinders.
Hope you enjoy whatever you continue with. Keep up the great work 👍

I recommend checking out Warhammer Darktide if you like Helldivers.
Reductively, it's Left 4 Dead in Warhammer but it adds alot of extra depth through massive replayability and player loadout/skill expression.
It had a very rough launch and is still a bit unoptimised but otherwise has been improving steadily over time.
The gameplay is visceral and feedback driven rewarding skillful play and has a remarkable melee system and gun system that allows both to shine without one becoming better than the other.
There's 4 playable classes, each customisable right down to their backstory and personality, which informs a mid mission conversation system where player characters will banter and chat during quiet moments based on their personalities.
The only problem it has, aside from optimisation, is the monetisation. It's a premium currency cosmetics shop with unnecessary rotating inventory. This could be ignorable as it's not in your face like alot of games but there's a definite difference in quality between the uniquely modelled fancy looking premium cosmetics and the stuff unlocked for free that are mostly recolours of each other. If the premium currency was earnable through gameplay like Helldivers that wouldn't be a problem but doesn't so it creates an implicit class divide in players.

Super Credits are of abundance. 20 per mission with ease, probably more if you focus on it. Then you can get many from warbonds too. You need 1000 to buy a warbond. The only catch I can think of are new players as there are more and more warbonds now. Will feel overwhelming having 0SC and looking at 4+ locked warbonds. But getting there is faster than I would expect for sure.
Haven't spend any extra money apart from buying the game and I have all the warbonds and like 5 or 6 armors from Super Store (+ 3 helmets).
It's not a pay wall per say. Only if you don't want to spend the time. Microtransaction prices seem reasonable tho

I do like it but I haven’t played in well over a month. The super credit grind got old fast and the honeymoon wore off after a month straight of crashing or disconnecting every 3rd game. 3/4 of the weapons are paperweights, they wafflestomp weapons that are actually fun to use into the dirt, and when they do eventually buff something it’s minuscule.

I liked the conversation about how enemies react to being shot when it comes to weapon satisfaction. A bio Titan requires a lot of hits to kill, but when it’s low on health, that thing is carved up. It has chunks missing, it no longer spits acid since you shot off its stomach and neck, it’s bleeding out of every pore, it’s a gruesomely glorious sight. Even if it’s still a problem, you feel like you did a number on it, and your guns feel effective.

As far as super credits go, I you earn them through gameplay pretty decently. Either by finding them on the map or buying them with medals, no real money. I honestly don't have much time to play. I only get a few hours a week. That said, I've gained enough super credits to unlock 2 of the 3 premium warbonds without spending a dime. I don't even have enough medals to completely finish them either so, while you can spend the extra money to get them earlier, you easily can earn it through gameplay.

The whole point of the warbonds is to offer alternatives rather than incentivising supercredits purchases with a "get this OP thing now!" push. I've unlocked the first 2 warbonds without paying a penny just by playing. This isn't a bad thing at all. It's progression, like stratagems.

8:54 - The ergonomics also go a long way to making the weapons feel realistic and it helps differentiate weapons. It also creates an organic way to differentiate big heavy support weapons and make their usage feel more organic. People zipping around and spinning in circles and one-shooting people with what is supposed to be a long distance precision sniper rifle has been a design challenge since Team Fortress for Quake. The weapon weight and ergonomics creates an answer for that which can be applied to all weapons types so they can all be tweaked in this way an it doesn't feel out of place to have these mechanics on something like the anti-material rifle because those mechanics are the same ones you've experienced in every weapon in the game. The only way I can imagine it being more accurate, not that they should do this, is if scopes got even more blacked out and out of focus when your movement would put you out of the ideal eyebox. (That would differentiate them from the red dot sites.)

I know the video is 9 days old, but I've been playing the game for a few weeks and it definitely runs (very well) on Linux - even better, somehow nProtect runs in user mode rather than in kernel mode.
My guess is that Linux players (excluding those on the Steam Deck) are such a minority that they're comparable (or even fewer) than those who put in the effort to bypass nProtect, therefore the devs decided that enforcing kernel-level anticheat measures is less profitable than simply... not.
