@@makotoplush9776 How homogenized their current output is and the state that the PS5 is in even a few years later (Although that's not to say Xbox isn't screwing up big-time either) goes to show that they're repeating what made the PS3 bad (or at least extremely rocky) at the beginning. God of War: Ragnarok has some writing problems, Sony killed Japan Studio (their own first-party development house in Japan) in favor of an Astro coalmine, Naughty Dog is a one-trick pony with toxic crunch culture attached at this point (The Last of Us), and Destiny (they bought out Bungie) is literally everything wrong with live service games. I remember the PS2 days when they had a game for everybody (SOCOM, ATV Offroad Fury, sports games, JRPGs, you name it) filling different niches and interests, but nowadays, games (especially western ones) play it so safe, that they make a single overly expensive game that attempts to appeal to everybody while not having anything particularly special or interesting (beyond a thematic sense) about it.
Except only this time, Sony doesn't have the OtherOS (Fun fact: The PS2 and the PS3 had the ability to run Linux on it, so they could sell the systems in European territories without dealing with an extra tax for game consoles that only play games), free online multiplayer, the vast majority of the multimedia functionality (CD playback coming straight to my mind), and backwards compatibility (With PS3 games and older) going for it. The PS3 mostly felt like a premium product, and the PS4 was a breath of fresh air (at least early on) from what Microsoft was pushing. Honestly, I'm fine waiting a few years for Sony's games to come to PC, because I still have zero interest in buying a PS5 except for when it gets a custom firmware and homebrew, so I can play older PS4 games with better performance (Lance MacDonald's Bloodborne patch comes to mind) and single-player mods. My bluray drive can rip my PS3 (and older) disc based games just fine, so I'm fine with emulation as well. Final Fantasy 16 has enough issues, and even if it was a perfect game, I'm not paying $600+ (keeping in mind sales tax, being forced to buy a Horizon bundle because Sony doesn't sell just the base system anymore as a way to pad out the cost, and the cost of the game itself) just to play that one game either. I can say however that their controller (outside of having analog stick drifting problems) is the best one on the market right now.

And yes, those $600 machines are losing money. Remember that the store you bought it from takes a large cut, often up to half. and the graphics cards and shipping and such are pricey. The biggest issue with Xbox is just how corporate its prevailing mindset is at the top. Rather than fostering a position in the industry, they just throw money at existing studios and use them to pillar themselves up. Sony is just as much a giant conglomorate, but there are countless historic games that would never have existed without Playstation taking an active role with them. Conversely, it's hard to think of any games that were organically homegrown by Microsoft rather than simply bought from someone else. Even the first Halo was deep in the pipeline before Microsoft stepped in.

But XBox (and ultimately Microsoft), has been lacking in games that set it apart. And their acquisitions aren't really helping since they have to appease other companies (mostly Sony). But if they can develop Halo back to where it was under Bungie, a couple of dormant franchises, and possibly two new franchises, they could be more competitive. And that should be the easy part. controversial, but xbox and sony are better than nintendo. we all know the only reason people would buy a nintendo switch is because of the exclusives. if it was for handheld, then a steam deck is a much better option. the standard steam deck COMES with a case, 2x the storage of the nintendo switch, and has a much bigger library of games. if you get the 2nd type, you get eight times the storage which is an ssd, faster storage, and an entire bundle for your profile. the 3rd version is just a BEAST with 16x the storage, and anti-glare etched case. keep in mind the steam deck alone is 10x better (in hardware) than the nintendo switch.

All this goodwill with gamepass, backwards compatibility and PC compatibility doesn't mean anything, when your competitors have all the exclusive games which keeps them more popular. Halo being neglected in the hands of a caretaker studio was the worse thing for the brand. People used to buy an Xbox just for Halo. Now nobody cares. I love being able to swap between my PC and Xbox when playing something and be able to pick up from the same save. I love having the option to try an indie title through the Cloud to see if I want to download it and invest more time with it. And Xbox has such a strong lineup of devs that they could start releasing some amazing titles, if they can just keep them focused on making what they're good at. Damn good and thought provoking video. As someone that works in a used game store, it's enlightening watching this and comparing notes from the things we get traded in and that actually still sell in store. PS2 era games and systems as well as Xbox 360 games sell like gangbusters, while Xbox one's get traded in way more often than PS4s, while 360 game actually outsell anything current gen that we get in (but not nearly as much as anything PS2 related). think all the companies need to go back and see what made PS2 and 360 such massive successes and draw from that instead of acquiring massive studios, destroying the IPs that come with them, and crapping on gamers on a whole with their shoddy 'AAA' experiences on a whole. If Baldur's Gate III has proven anything, people LIKE not having battle passes, micro transactions, etc, in lieu of paying ONE price for a COMPLETE game that's actually enjoyable! BGIII proved it's possible, just not possible for most AAA companies that put profit over enjoyment. This is an ENTERTAINMENT industry first and foremost, and the bigger companies have forgotten just what that means on a whole. Until they kick their mentality of corporate greed over true art and entertainment, I'll happily be playing mostly indie titles and BGIII 😁.

Japanese devs knew what Sony's, Nintendo's and Sega's vision for their games were, Microsoft never had a vision, they didn't knew what made Halo so important.
This goes beyond exclusives. Nintendo makes games that are juat fun to play, prioritizing gameplay over story. Sony games games that push the limits of what videogames should be and focus more on story. Sega tried to bring to life all sort of crazy and wacky game concepts, and they had a good grasp on what makes a good arcade game. Xbox had... multiplayer?

They have everything at their disposal, choose not to use any of them, yet get shocked and cry that it's "unfair" when the competition uses what THEY have. Right, yes, it's so "unfair" for Sony to have third-party marketing deals. The exact same marketing deals that Microsoft also made, many of which with the exact same companies, during the years of the 360. They're MICROSOFT. They could outspend any deal that Sony or Nintendo has ever or would ever want to make and still be in the black thanks to Windows keeping them afloat, so miss me with those "Please let us compete" crocodile tears about buying ActBliz.
All this could be turned around by using what they already have and making great games, just like both Nintendo and Sony have pulled themselves out of similar holes. But instead Microsoft is doing literally everything BUT make great games, if any at all. And if Spencer's and Greenberg's recent statements are any indication, they have no intention of changing that in order to put all their eggs into the Game Pass and Cloud basket, quality be damned. I used to respect Spencer, when he took over it looked like he was really trying to right the ship for a while. Now he seems almost no different from Sony's Jim Ryan, overpromising, underdelivering, and disrespecting longtime customers.

    2. I feel the series S might've been more harm at the beginning of launch because at least where I lived during the PS5/XSX high demand and lack of supplies, I would see XSS just sitting on shelves fully stocked using transistors that could've been used to feed the XSX demand instead.

Microsoft also mandates that any game releasing on the X have no feature loss or content removal when being put on the S, it has to be as close as possible to the X just with downgraded graphics.
Baldur's Gate 3 hasn't cancelled the version yet but they said they'll have an answer by the end of the year so by microsoft's own polices, they keep giving playstation more games. They did the same thing with indies where it had to release on xbox first or same day to be on the store. So a bunch of indies just straight up skipped the xbox to focus on playstation. Took them a while to remove it leading to undertale finally getting a release on the platform. (Which is why the playstation release was such a big deal at E3)

Well turns out you ran out of budget, the PC version is ready to go but you have to make a choice. You can promise one version with the other coming at a later date.
Well turns out Xbox is forcing you to release there first or never at all. Instead of putting in the work on an xbox version that may not even succeed, why not go towards the platform with the biggest install base instead? So a lot of devolpers in this position straight up didn't bother an xbox version because it saved them money and ps4 had the bigger install base to launch towards anyway. Imagine if Fortnite had dropped as an Xbox exclusive. Fortnite broadly might not have been as popular, but it could've been a new Halo for them and could EASILY have saved the Xbox One.
They just don't know how to manage talent. And they never have. This isn't a Phil Spencer vs Don Mattrick debate. They NEVER knew how to handle devs. They need to learn how to treat developers as well as they treat their customers. Even if the Activision merger goes through and MS doesn't owe anyone else any cross platform titles, they will simply run Cod, Warcraft, Tony Hawk and the rest into the ground or just sit on the IP and never use them.

I believe the current identity of Xbox is accessability. Think about it, the Series S is cheap and was one lf the only things you could find during the pandemic. Xbox is pushing cloud gaming services and wants to partner with smart TV makers to have an xbox streaming app where all you need is a controller, or at least considered it at one point. Xbox has had their adaptive controller for years now. Even the backwards compatibility feeds into that. No part of your library is lost, even old CoD servers are up again. I can transfer a game from my TV to my phone and continue playing where I left off in a different room, or when my kid or wife wants the TV either by streaming directly from the box itself or by cloud. Xbox also backed Bethesda's desire to bring a mod menu to consoles before Bethesda's acquisition, making modding and having a tailor made experience more accessible.
I agree right now that what Microsoft needs is games, they lost a lot of brand identity with the Xbox One and the leaderships choices there, but now with Phil in charge its clear to me that he simply does not want to build Xbox's old identity of being the "social compettitive" brand, it simply will not work today because everyone is at that baseline now. He wants to take the broken pieces of Xbox and build a new brand around the idea of it being the "everyman" ecosystem. A brand that is present in all forms of gaming, Mobile, PC and console. Heck if you count the licenced Bethesda table tops, they are there as well. Thats why the acquisitions seem all over the place, because they are intentionally so. Getting more games, more variety of games and getting them to more people, through Xbox services of course. Starfield I think is going to be a glimpse at what to expect from the future of Xbox games, while it was well into development by the time of the acquisition the delay was clearly an Xbox move, and not necessarily a BGS one. I think Phil knows this game is not only BGS chance to fix their reputation but also Xbox's chance to build its new identity. Im willing to bet Starfield has significantly more day one players than any other BGS title and it will be thanks to Gamepass. Even playstation players are getting PCs and Xbox Series X/S consoles just to play it.

You're ignoring my point, the're two reasons why anyone would choose a console over a PC in the modern way.
      1st: Ease of use/convieniance
      2nd: Exclusives
The 1st meaning that full PCs are so much more complicated and take a lot more effort to maintain compared to consoles, you can fully brick your PC by downloading viruses and deleting certian files, and often have to update drivers and manage your files yourself.
I adore the freedom, customization, and unique potential that PCs offer, but not everyone is tech savy enough to use them, same way that Linux has a large number of benifits but many people still choose Windowd over it due to comand prompts and dependacies being extremely confusing.
Consoles are much more uniform, convienant and reliable, PCs have far higher potential and scope but some people aren't equiped to manage them, the Steam Deck is fantastic but I have had many technical difficulties with it, and that is why someone might choose a home/handheld console over one.

What ruins Xbox for me is surprisingly not really related to the games. It's the fact that they've abandoned me. You see there are 2 types of gamers in this world, those that like to collect/own their copies and those that don't. The consoles should function just as well offline as they do online when it comes to single player games. Unfortunately if you're offline on a modern xbox you can't add a user account, you can't earn achievements and the backwards compatibility won't even work without a download. All Playstations work offline.

Game Pass is not a good deal and I’d argue that it devalues their brand and IPs more. Everything is just a limited time event where no one cares about anything except the newest addition to the service. Yes SOME not all AAA games are 70 now, but people forget that Game Pass keeps going up too, and assuming you only play 3-4 major games a year, you’d still be better buying actual physical copies and reselling them towards the next thing. Or hell, owning it if you like it. Game Pass is very much conditioning people that games are just consumable and should be discarded once they aren’t popular anymore. They’ve also completely abandoned backwards compatibility, there are very few games that are actually BC. Xbox is trying to take over the market, push physical copies out of the picture, and force you to be connected and paying them 24/7 to play anything at all.

Xbox 360 was great! But the red ring of death KILLED the system and the brand
Xbox One/S/X is where this system got VERY CONFUSING....the launch put the nail in the coffin (ie. must have internet to use system/no sharing games)
Xbox Series X is the system NOBODY wants...I swear to God I had to look up the name of the system...SERIES X...I keep forgetting that name (they ALL BLEND TOGETHER with the Xbox One S and Xbox One X)
    I would buy a ps5, or a ps5 pro.

    Edit:

As a PC gamer, in my observation the reason why Xbox never recovered after the E3 2013 disaster is the fact that they've been releasing their 1st party games on PC. So for people who owns PC, they never cared to buy Xbox at all. While on Playstation, there are tons of 1st party games exclusives that are hardware sellers. Although that changed already when the pandemic hit in 2020, and Sony figured that releasing games on PC would be a feasible strategy to survive and make profit when people are stuck in their homes. But this doesn't mean Sony are always the good guys either, they also had fair share of bad decision including the backward compat for their latest consoles and many more.
And speaking of Microsoft, the reason why majority people are not interested in Xbox brand is the fact that Microsoft as an arrogant company has never had a great history to begin with. They are the monopoly in PC OS and Cloud service for a long long time, they pretty much wants to kill any competition they come across with. Oh and a fun fact: Did you know that Bill Gates even tried to buy Nintendo corp and Playstation brand to Sony back in the early 2000's but thank god they refused. Microsoft pretty much wants to be a monopoly in every aspects of the tech industry and that includes gaming which is why people hated them.
Don't believe everything that I've said? Look at the disaster that they've done in 2013 about the mandatory always online DRM for the Xbox one, it goes to show how arrogant they were. They thought they were untouchable at the top spot in console race that they started to implement their draconic strategy to gamers just because they managed to beat PS3 by small margin. But all thanks to Sony when they implemented the exact opposite and suffice to say they managed to recapture the hearts of the gamers. And the rest is history as they say and Xbox never recovered since then.

Idk. I like to own physical copies of my games. Game pass seems great for poor families with small budgets cuz it's a 10.00 rental service except the games don't expire as long as you keep paying the 10.00 fee. But at the same time, if you ever want to move the game between consoles, you can't cuz they're bound to the 10.00 fees and so are the saved files and your progression (which is the life blood for a gamer but I guess it wouldn't matter to a casual). My save files are as precious as the physical copies themselves cuz I don't want to have to worry about having to be bound to a 10.00 service to have access. I also prefer to buy games directly from devs if possible on PC so I tend to stay off Steam. I think I only own 6 games on Steam that were gifted to me. Portal 1 and 2, half-life 1 and 2 and left 4 dead.

@@N.G.H.It's actually the other way around with save files and progress. I have been able to jump between my owned version of Fallout 4 and the gamespass version easily, and the cloud saves have enabled me to switch between multiple consoles. If it where not for the mods I have downloaded (those don't transfer) I could switch from my Xbox Series X to my Xbox One X in my bedroom, and then stream the game to my phone directly from Xbox servers later all continuing the same save.
