I work at a gamestop (which is loads of fun lemme tell you…) and trying to explain the difference between all digital consoles and disk drive consoles to parents, grandparents, and little kids is the fucking WORST. NOBODY understands it, and people just usually go with whatever is cheaper only to end up more confused. It also doesn’t help that Microsoft needs to get the fuck over itself and come up with names for their consoles that don’t confuse the everloving SHIT out of everyone. Going from the Xbox One S and One X to the just changing to Xbox Series S and Series X has made things SO confusing for everyone. I can’t tell you how many times people come in asking for the “Xbox One X” when they mean the Series X. I’ll get halfway through a conversation before the realization kicks in that something ain’t right here. It’s just miserable.
As someone who barely keeps up with anything Xbox and could barely tell them apart: Your comment is the one that finally taught me the difference between these Xbox versions lol. Thank you.
Honestly I would totally buy physical PC games if they were still offered, it took me a whole damn day to download Deathloop and by then, a lot of the excitement of playing the game had worn off. Sometimes I regret switching to PC.
@@paldinox1 Meh, I don't really want a disc drive in my computer. Maybe physical distribution via USB stick would be cool though. As for the excitement part, I personally don't mind waiting for a download (especially with how often sales mean I buy games in bulk), but I can see how it would be a roadblock for others.
I love PC gaming. But my Series X/PS5 is fast approching the performance of my 1080ti PC. In some instances the better optimised console games (Halo Infinite etc) runs, looks and plays far better on the console. New games tend to crash less on the console too. And I am absolutely dredding upgrading the PC this time. It doesnt seem as worth it compared to 5 years ago.
I really think the biggest thing holding me back from All-Digital is the lack of solid ownership. I had a friend who lost his Steam account-every single one of those games, thousands of dollars spent over years and years, suddenly vanished. Or if my Nintendo Account is ever banned for whatever reason, valid or otherwise, I will suddenly lose all of those games. At least with a physical game, I _own_ it. No matter what happens, the internet could spontaneously explode and malicious AI could take over all the world’s interconnected systems and infrastructure, but my disc copy of Metal Gear Solid will in fact still boot up a copy of Metal Gear Solid no matter what happens.
The exploding is valid but Malicious AI would make your system useless as by that time your console is linked to the internet. Making sure that you cannot boot it up.
Physical games on a PC are useless. Why? There is a key in the box that gets bound to one account. Lose that account and the physical copy is useless too.
There are games I will buy physically and games I will buy digitally - and its exactly because I once had an Apple account with a few thousand songs that vanished! You don't own digital, you just pay up the butt to rent it before it goes away.
@@Anedime I'm saying that in the future consoles would be more linked to the internet with if there are still things like game disc. Therefore AI would just hack it if they dare to turn it on. Making the system useless.
The thing though is that the average person simply doesn't care about game ownership. There's even gaming enthusiasts who I've seen trade in their last gen console and all of their games with it because "it's time". Most people just want games to be convenient, and if owning games is inconvenient, then that's the way it goes.

The PSP Go had recently come out and the employee at the store convinced my Christmas shopping parents to get a PSP Go instead because it was the newer model. On Christmas day I got a PSP Go and PSN gift card. I charged the Go excitedly on Christmas morning, entered the PSN card, went to the digital store to search for Birth By Sleep.... "no results found". After looking it up I found out the game wasn't on the PSP Go due to it being larger than the max game size the Go could handle and I was stuck with an open product and being unable to play the single game I was waiting all year for. The amazing part of this is that all the benefits of physical mentioned here were actually the benefits that digital had on PC which is why physical PC games died.
Yeah, I don't think I've had a disk drive on my computer for over 5-6 years at least. Why would I go to a store or buy a physical copy online when steam usually has AAA games on sale for less than 10$
I was thinking about this when he said you can buy physical games cheaper, I feel like every time I've seen physical pc games they are like twice the price
To be fair Steam kind of did it right. Steam sales are hard to beat... And with game sharing it takes some of the bite off not being able to sell used copies.
Actually, games got sold that could be installed from the disc, and activated for use with a steam code. This is for example how Half Life 2 and Team Fortress 2 introduced millions to Steam, but they would then go and buy digital games..

Bought myself one early in year with an external harddrive and have been very happy playing through the GamePass library. I skipped the Xbox 360 and Ones generations so I had a huge backlog to go through. The Series S is hands down a great deal if you plan on paying for GamePass.
I have a series x and came to the realization a while ago when game updates became as big as the game that having a disc drive is becoming more redundant over time. If you add in game pass to the equation.

Realistically you’re not experiencing a new stress (i need two external drives for my 1 TB consoles minimum anyway, 512 internal doesn’t change much) 2) you’re entirely forgetting the targeting audience. the series X exists for hardcore gamers. The S is there for general audiences and families or as an additional console at a much lower base price and much smaller size. Plus with cloud streaming on console there’s a lot more ways to avoid huge downloads.
ever since I saw digital I always scratched my head wondering. Why isn't this cheaper! Especially with Nintendo. They like to charge full launch price for games in clearance bins.
Exactly! Why is it okay for Nintendo to still charge $60 for launch titles like Breath of the Wild five years down the line on their digital store when by all rights they should've had their prices permanently slashed to $20, $30 max?

Hi Scott!, great video as always! Here in Mexico is actually cheaper to buy digital games whenever they are with an X% off rather than buy used games in game stores. We are already paying a stupid amount of taxes for this kind of entertainment media, so digital-only video consoles will always find their market ✌🏽
Amazon has been trying to "match" prices whenever there are digital sales. Still love the fact I can buy and download a game when Im at work or just outside having fun.
I agree with your reasoning. Where I come from we don't have access to Amazon delivering and whenever you want to buy a physical copy you have to pay between 10 and 15 $ extra in taxes. Having the possibility to buy a digital copy, way cheaper without taxes, being able to predownload them so that I get to work in the morning and when I come back can easily start playing is just to good for me. And I think it's the same for many latin american countries.
10:00 Third world country inhabitant here - the difference between the digital and non-digital versions, after taxes, is a jump from $650 to $800 USD and I wish I were joking
0:45 in playstation consoles the physical games are installed on first boot into the hard drive so it doesn't matter if you have a physical or digital game, it will take the same space on your hard drive anyways.
The last physical game I bought for my PS4 was Fallout 4. Almost 30min later, it was installed in its entirety to my console. A few years later, wanted to play it again. But couldn't find the disc. So I bought it digitally on sale for around $5. It played the second I started it.
I like having physical games, but there are some games I’m glad to have on digital. The trend of creating consoles that are digital only is kind of worrisome to me. And like Scott said, it makes sense from the perspective of the business to make download only consoles. And I don’t like their reasoning.
I mean making digital only consoles is just the natural evolution. I mean I doubt many people would get pissy that consoles don't have slots for old cartridges anymore.
My major issue with the digital only Xbox One S is that they took out the disk drive, but didn't upgrade the storage. A digital only home console is a prime reason to upgrade the storage.
at least you can upgrade your storage with any drive you want. I find quite funny that after this Microsoft decided with Series S to halve its storage and make the only available upgrade more expensive than going for series X to begin with
MS even made a 2TB regular Xbox One S when it released for a good while, I actually have that model and I don’t even need an external hard drive yet, though those days are coming soon with the Series X or a check of Game Pass
I wished they'd stuffed a 2.5inch hard drive bay and caddy in under a flap to use the disc drives sata port and let you stuff it with as much full speed storage as you could buy.
@@Hayden2447 you don’t need an external drive anyway. Why do people not get that the Xbox One uses a standard SATA drive. You can literally pop an ssd in that bad boy
@@pixels_per_minute I think that’s one of the reasons I’ve mostly quit using my PC. I spend most of my time playing my switch and the decent library I’ve amassed.
The disk drive in my PC stopped working like a year ago, I've never even considered replacing it. In fact I kinda regret including it when building the thing, I maybe used it a dozen times total.
I'd say the 'you can always find physically' really depends on where you are. Here on argentina, you are lucky to be able to find real variety of anything in pyhsical format and will usually only have luck if you go all digital. And the fees for shipping and stuff are too crazy. Then again, given here they make you pay about 50% tax on digital purchases too, you are fudged anyway.
So basically, there are areas of the world where a full digital console makes sense and is the only way to really find games. So even if the difference is small, it still saves you money, since you'd never, EVER actually manage to get a physical copy of anything regardless. I have a switch, the only physical cart I ever got is kirby star allies, and even that one I ended up selling online eventually, and ended up getting a digital version instead a year or so in time. (since carts are rare here, it was enough tobuy the game again and still keep some cash XD )
@@Someone_is_me_12345 if it's the same price, sure, options are great. But why waste money on something you're not going to use anyway? Keep in mind I'm only speaking for cases like this one where it makes no sense to buy physical games.
I don't know man, i say there's quite a variety in games here in Argentina, you can choose fifa 21, and fifa 20, and fifa 19, and fifa 18, efootball if you're a maniac
Having digital options, especially for handhelds is great, on my Switch if a physical copy exists at the time I want to purchase I will go for it, but I don't mind having digital versions of games especially when I travel it's less stuff I have to bring and keep track of.
@@superC1266 I think it was mostly just a jab at newer entries in the series that seemingly don't even bother compressing the titles to any real degree. I'm mostly a PC guy, though I own a Series S. I have the same issue with Forza Horizon 5. I mainly play that on the Xbox, but the game, itself, takes up a third of my storage with the base installation, and is also being constantly updated.
Unfortunately even physical disks arent truly ours anymore as you have to download the rest of the game when you insert the disk. Its not all included on disk as we all thought once.. especially with games getting bigger and bigger where they no longer fit on a disk. Yeah they could make higher fidelity disks/bluray etc. But that costs money and these corporations dont wanna spend that much Unfortunately. So yeah physical does have more benefits than digital but times ticking even on that..😔 But i fully intend to continue to buy physical games till the day they stop being made. Despite the issues now facing physical media, it still provides something more satisfying regardless.
Just recently I found out that new boxed copies of Borderlands Legendary Edition and Bioshock The Collection on Switch are being sold with only a download code inside with no cartridge which is quite disappointing and makes me even more concerned about whether buying a physical game will even be an option in the future especially when you don't have anything tangible (aside from the sheet of paper with the download code) inside the case itself.
I'm fairly sure the game files are actually included on the disk, or at least some of it. I bought FFXV for the PS4 on day one, and although my internet was down, the game installation went as normal. I think it just copies the data over to your console so it loads faster or smth.
My take on things is that sure, digital's got a lot more that can go wrong, but it's not like physical was ever a permanent solution either. If anything I feel like digital has more longevity if you factor in piracy. definitely will be concerning once digital becomes the only option and companies can get away with worse however.
Y'know I totally get the entire physical thing, but where I live, you have to drive around 15-20 miles to find a Gamestop or Walmart. The Series S has been very nice so far, and I don't regret it at all. But then again, I only play 4-5 games at a time. It is genuinely so much easier just being able to buy a game right at home, and play it in a few minutes to 1-2 hours.
Totally agree. 400 gigs is plenty for digital, I have like 30 game pass games installed. When I finish one I delete it. Idk what's with all these ding dongs playing the same game for years, they must have a mental deficiency.
@@robofish312 Hey, there's no need to attack other people for their preferences when gaming, you know? You can have ENTIRE arcade library taking as much space as a single modern AAA game. Or, you know, have three installations of NFS Most Wanted with different mods take less space than Heat. I don't even bother deleting first Dark Souls or Assassin's Creed because of how little space they will save.
Now microsoft supposedly has a patent for a disc drive for the series s which will read the game and then let you install the digital edition of it and at that point just have the disc reader play the game
Tbf the series X too installs the game to internal storage, because disk read speed would be too low, it just uses the disk to check ownership once installed
@@themagicalgamer6522 Disc games are installed to the console from the disc, and then the disc is used as a DRM mechanism to verify that you still own the game. So it might be slower to download but should otherwise have no impact on playing the game.
Exactly. I was looking for a Series X for a while, but the more I thought about it, I am just probably going to use it for gamepass. So I settled for an S.
Being an old fart in internet years that's been around since the 2600 was still on store shelves, the all digital trend concerns me a bit. I still have every console, cart, and game disc I've ever owned. If I want to play them, I just pop them in. That's it. Now even with physical media you have to download huge day one patches on most AAA titles, so having the disc won't mean much when those servers are gone in - at _best_ - 15 years and you can't download the patches needed to finish the goddamn game since everything launches half-assed and half-baked now. If you're not into emulation, there are tons of games that are just going to be GONE when the HDD in your console eventually dies _because all HDDs eventually die._ I still buy physical whenever I can, but this trend is already making me savor the new games I'm playing even more - if they're playable at launch, at least - since part of me knows they're eventually going to be gone. Nintendo seems to be the only company releasing complete games on carts anymore, and that's not an across the board thing, just mostly.
I feel the exact same. I've been collecting games for about 15 years and the push toward digital only is really freaking me out. The servers that will eventually shut down, the HDD/SSD that might break or die, the dlc that have no physical form and will eventually get lost when the servers will go down... Of course physical have its own set of problems like disk rot and physical damage to the CDs but those things are all avoidable with proper care at least.
Or, just use emulation Or homebrew your systems If you take issue with what the companies are doing, you can give the. the finger and use third party solutions.
All discs eventually die too ... faster than hard drives do. You think that Nintendo card is future proof? The only thing that's future proof is things you can easily backup and copy, meaning if you're "not into emulation" and for some reason dislike PC gaming, then there's absolutely no future proofing for you.
All valid except for that part near the beginning, when you said buying games physically saves space on your console. This was true in the past, when games were small enough to run directly from disk. But for the PS5, for example, literally no physical disks you buy are running the game directly. They're all install disks, which means it still takes time to set up and doesn't save you any space, since the install that the disk does takes up the same amount of space as a digital copy.
And some dont even contain games they’re just discs with the license for you to download the game… couldn’t play halo until 6pm when the game files went live despite having the disc… absolutely ridiculous
As far as I know the Switch is the only console that doesn't do this (at least not as much) compared to Playstation and Xbox. Kinda funny that Nintendo being archaic actually benefits us consumers in terms of how they handle physical media.
That series s comment is spot on I've had mine for over 3 months now, and I've only played game pass games on it. It does help that this is my first Xbox console, so I don't have to worry about not being able to play any older discs I would of had.

I ordered the xbox one s thinking I was ordering the xbox series s and I was so confused when my coworker told me that I ordered the wrong one.

As someone that exists, I can confirm.
@@paldinox1 Meh, I don't really want a disc drive in my computer. Maybe physical distribution via USB stick would be cool though. For some reason downloading games on steam is like 5 times faster compared to my playstation so I don't have much of a problem with it
I love PC gaming. But my Series X/PS5 is fast approching the performance of my 1080ti PC. In some instances the better optimised console games (Halo Infinite etc) runs, looks and plays far better on the console. New games tend to crash less on the console too.

Good luck buying one anyways, unless you're stupid enough to buy from a scalper!

I skipped the Xbox 360 and Ones generations so I had a huge backlog to go through. The Series S is hands down a great deal if you plan on paying for GamePass.
Fun fact: using dev mode, you can install emulators without hacking your console on all Xbox ones/series x or s.
I have a series x and came to the realization a while ago when game updates became as big as the game that having a disc drive is becoming more redundant over time. If you add in game pass to the equation.

The S is there for general audiences and families or as an additional console at a much lower base price and much smaller size. at least you can upgrade your storage with any drive you want. I find quite funny that after this Microsoft decided with Series S to halve its storage and make the only available upgrade more expensive than going for series X to begin with
disks still make you download most of the game anyway, so you arent saving much storage
You can literally pop an ssd in that bad boy
as a PC gamer, i forgot there was physical games, i can't remember the last time i used a CD room in a pc.
Probably because DVD and Blu-ray killed CD ROM lol, but seriously... Don't you miss having something in your hands? I guess I'm just old
Medal of honor war chest and company of heroes double pack...........15 years ago lol wait 15 years ahhhhhh
@@pixels_per_minute I think that’s one of the reasons I’ve mostly quit using my PC. I spend most of my time playing my switch and the decent library I’ve amassed.
That's probably the thing I missed the most when I moved from consoles to PC, having a physical collection is really nice.
Ok but like still having a digital only console is just not a good idea
@@Someone_is_me_12345 so you want people to buy games with expensive ass shipping fees and go bankrupt? alright then
@@Someone_is_me_12345 if it's the same price, sure, options are great.
Scott: “that means you can store like, two call of duty games”
Literally every person who owns MW 2019: x to doubt
Not really MW 2019 is 187GB (ps4 physical with all addons ) and I can also fit cod cold war which is 228GB so ya like two cod games
@@superC1266 When he made that comment, he was speaking on the Series S that has roughly 350 gigs of usuable disk space.
@@jesserogalski1402 ah ok it still can fit 2 cod games vanguard is like 103GB and like bo4 which is around 130GB
Plus these aren't even mentioning older cod games like bo3 which is around 50GB
@@superC1266 I think it was mostly just a jab at newer entries in the series that seemingly don't even bother compressing the titles to any real degree. I'm mostly a PC guy, though I own a Series S. I have the same issue with Forza Horizon 5. I mainly play that on the Xbox, but the game, itself, takes up a third of my storage with the base installation, and is also being constantly updated.
Every time Scott uploads a new video, it fills me with immensely warm joy.
You can also resell physical, often putting a percentage of the money spent back into your pocket.
Sure, but digital game sales are so low, that who really cares? Gaming isn't expensive these days, unless you buy everything on day one.
@@collinsmcrae a 60 dollar price tag for games that often can be beaten in 20 hours is most _certainly_ expensive.
@@TheDamnWinner I don't ever buy brand new games, so I don't have that problem. I haven't spent over 30$ for a game in ages.
@@collinsmcrae okay well thats _you_ not everyone. How are you gonna make an authoritative statement based on an anecdote?
6/30/22: last video with the OG outro theme and it just makes ya sad 😢
Unfortunately even physical disks arent truly ours anymore as you have to download the rest of the game when you insert the disk. Its not all included on disk as we all thought once.. especially with games getting bigger and bigger where they no longer fit on a disk. Yeah they could make higher fidelity disks/bluray etc. But that costs money and these corporations dont wanna spend that much Unfortunately. So yeah physical does have more benefits than digital but times ticking even on that..😔
But i fully intend to continue to buy physical games till the day they stop being made. Despite the issues now facing physical media, it still provides something more satisfying regardless.
At worst case at least you have the game cover lol
It was _never_ truly yours.
The license used to be transferrable, but it was still technically exactly that: a license.
If anything I feel like digital has more longevity if you factor in piracy. definitely will be concerning once digital becomes the only option and companies can get away with worse however.
can we all appreciate scotts humor and dedication!
I also agree that Scott does seem to have a skewed vision when it comes to these issues because of the high availability of game options he's had during his life, but that's not an excuse to act like a jerk towards what people prefer.
@@Alfonso162008 anyone who can play the same game for years and not be able move on or delete it to free space is a real ding dong. Nothin' goin' on up there.
@@robofish312 basicaly gta 5 players 😂
@@robofish312 I literally installed Golden Axe on a PS3. I also have it on MAME. What's not to like about classic games that you can play for a few minutes when waiting for something or to just chill off? And older the game, less space it takes.
It woud probably be too slow to be read in real time, considering it will output info on a USB port
Tbf the series X too installs the game to internal storage, because disk read speed would be too low, it just uses the disk to check ownership once installed
@@SeleDreams Hell, the One X does the same thing.
@@fishactivation5087 they’ve been doing it since the original Xbox One for fuck sake!
@@themagicalgamer6522 Disc games are installed to the console from the disc, and then the disc is used as a DRM mechanism to verify that you still own the game. So it might be slower to download but should otherwise have no impact on playing the game.
As a series S owner the description of “for those who only kinda want an Xbox” was spot on. It’s just a game pass machine.
Bruh a verified user made almost this exact comment half an hour after yours and they have like double the likes already smh

If you're not into emulation, there are tons of games that are just going to be GONE when the HDD in your console eventually dies _because all HDDs eventually die._
I still buy physical whenever I can, but this trend is already making me savor the new games I'm playing even more - if they're playable at launch, at least - since part of me knows they're eventually going to be gone.
Or, just use emulation
Or homebrew your systems
If you take issue with what the companies are doing, you can give the. the finger and use third party solutions.
@@internetguy7319 If you read the entire comment I said _"If you're not into emulation."_
@@kriscynical May as well say "if you're wrong and live by silly constraints"
Seriously if you happened to not have an internet connection you couldn’t play the halo game you paid 60-70 whatever currency for
@@4hand561 damn bro I've been all digital long enough to not have seen that, just a license disk is a different level of dirty lol
This is why I'm fine with having a PC, like why would I buy disks that don't store anything?
As far as I know the Switch is the only console that doesn't do this (at least not as much) compared to Playstation and Xbox. Kinda funny that Nintendo being archaic actually benefits us consumers in terms of how they handle physical media.
