Canon RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS Lens Review: The BEST kit lens?

    Canon 24-105mm f/4R ($1,099): sdp.io/C105R
    Canon EOS R ($2,300): sdp.io/R
    We've now taken over 1,600 photos with the Canon EOS R and the 24-105 f/4 lens... and it's a pretty fantastic combination for general, do-it-all consumer photography. The RF 24-105 f4 L IS is sharper than other kit lenses we've tested, including the Sigma 24-105 f4 and the Canon EF 24-105 f4 L IS. It's almost as sharp as the Canon 24-70 f/2.8, but not quite (and of course, it's a stop slower). While it's not a professional-grade lens, it's well-built, fairly compact, and extremely versatile.

      I actually switched to SONY when I saw the EOS-R. Basic things like a joystick, dual card slots and faster framerate + 120fps in 1080p made it really a no-brainer. And with the 3rd party lenses like the new Tamron 28-75 f2.8 - You can now get better value glass.

      Its interesting to see that lenses because of the distance and they are forced to design from nothing now seem to match some of the sony's that didn't really get enough praise. Many of the FE G and GM lenses are very sharp and we should not be shocked the R's will start showing a good jump over the dslr versions because of these reasons.

      Question: I've got an eos R body on the way and need to purchase a lens. I'm moving from an m50, so full frame is new to me.
      Will f/4 on the Eos R be fast enough to take decent shots in indoor lighting? Not being able to do that is my biggest pet peeve about using the m50.

    • @syeduzair7830
      @syeduzair7830 4 года назад

      @@relentlessburrito It depends. If there is very little light indoors, then you might need to crank up your iso but full frame cameras like the Eos R are good in low light because of their large sensor. So, just crank up your iso and you'll be fine until and unless you shoot in a really really dark environment, but you'll be able to take pretty good photos in decent indoor lighting. You'll still get decent/usable photos in very low light

    Sorry, I'm a pro and I am using the EOS-R as my primary camera. I do landscapes and portrait work for which I get paid (so I guess you might consider that professional. The focusing on the R is unreal and quite frankly for many if not most general usage the 24-105 RF lens is not a particular compromise in build quality (let alone it's high quality hood). Not sure you're being completely fair but then I understand you prefer the highest level of performing products in general.

      I am selling my 24-105 f4 for the RF 24-105 f4 version. I also own the 24-70 f2.8 II L. I love that lens and it performs very well on the EOS-R but I am still one of those who doesn't like to use adapters even though the EF to RF adapter is fine, it just creates extra bulk and length to the lens and more weight. With those new lenses they just announced I need to make a decision on selling my existing EF L lenses to convert to RF as it seems Canon will not be supporting them in the near future or just adapt them. Not sure what to do at this point as I still have my 5DM4 which can use them. At some point when the Mark 4 shows its age the L lenses will be sold to go over to the RF lenses. But to answer your question the RF 24-105 is nice unless you want the added benefit of the 24-70 f2.8 but keep in mind you lose image stabilization on the 24-70 f2.8 unless you buy the new RF version.

    Can you do a review on the 35mm RF? How does it compare to the Sigma 35mm Art? How sharp is it compared to the 35mm range on the 24-105mm RF and the 28-70mm RF?
    It's relatively cheap, don't know if it's totally worthless or if Canon was able to work some magic with it. Seems they wouldn't want to shoot themselves in the foot by making it a better lens than their EF counterparts, but they seemingly did that by making the 24-105 sharper than the EF 24-70 II (altho, 1 stop slower..)
    That would be awesome. Thanks.

      Bob, dpreview are an on line photography news site that is flogging advertising space - that is their business model. Writing something a bit contraversial means more clicks, means more revenue. Entertainment mate.
      Back in the real world, Canons best pro wide and midlength lenses wide do not even have IS eg, the 16-35mm F2.8 Liii and the 24-70mm F2.8 Lii (I have these) do not have IS as pros do not need this. Subjects more in the real world and is or ibis only stabilises the background.
      IS is usefull at longer focal lengths, eg >200mm if the subject isn't moving, but Canon argues that image stabilising is best done in lens. The irony is, that when I am birding @ 560mm, I often turn the IS of as it can hinder birds-in-flight photography. IS is for video.
      Yes, the EOSR is not a pupose built video camera, go and buy a BMPCC4K for video.

    I own the 35mm macro, the 50mm 1.2, and this. Honestly, this is my least favorite. It's boring, slow, and isn't particularly sharp. At least it's stabilized I guess. I normally don't expect much from a kit lens but this is supposedly L-grade glass. I'm just not seeing it.
    On a side note, the 35mm is seriously underrated.

Is my lens an older version of the more recent 24-105? Is it worth getting the newer 24-105mm lens with the lock or getting the 18-135mm F3.5 Canon lens? I gather the 24-105mm lens you mention in this video is for full frame cameras?

    Interesting video, Tony! I'm researching a FF System, and so far, was considering the Nikon Z7, Panasonic S1 (no need for S1R due to the "High Resolution Mode" in both these cameras), and also, one of the Canon FF models like the R, though I'm not fond of that "Multi-Function Bar" control. In terms of image sharpness and detail in large prints, do you have a preference of one of these systems? Thanks~

    • @RichFreeman
      @RichFreeman 4 года назад

      I can't vouch for the other systems but I was very happy with the R. It has the same sensor as the 5Div. You don't say what you're taking photos of and that is a consideration. You might consider the R6 at this point as it is a serious step up, except for resolution.

      I used a Canon Powershot Pro 1 bridge camera some years ago. It has an 8 megapixel sensor. I zoomed in at the pixels at some of my photos, and found that the real useful resolution was not more than 4 megapixels. So I set the camera to produce 4 megapixel files. There was nothing to gain by choosing 8 MP resolution. I now have an EOS RP. My favorite all-round lens is the RF 24-105 f4 L. This combination is very different from the old Powershot, because there is good and useful information in all the 26 megapixels. I would loose information if I were to select a lower than 26 MP resolution for my JPG files. So I am happy with the resolution of this glass.
