Genuinely I love that any time I want to research a lens a Christopher frost video is ALWAYS at the top and the familiarity has made me think “I hope Christopher made a video about this lens” and not once have I been disappointed! You’re doing photography Jesus’ work Christopher ❤️
Exactly! And that is why I signed up to his Patreon account for monthly donation. I really appreciate the work that he puts into his reviews. He addresses the new versions AND the old versions to help us make our lens buying decisions. Love it!!
The only truly unbiased review that mentioned the hazy image quality when close to minimum focus distance wide open (and up to about 1 meter focus distance in my experience) Subscribed immediately!
I am using my "old" EF glas with the EF-2-RF mount adapter with the control ring. So I have this feature also to my "old" EF and EF-S lenses. They are working pretty well on my EOS RP and R7. And my EF L lenses are performing very good on the R mirrorless system with the adapter. Thank you for your work for testing all this (for me Canon) lenses!!!
Thanks as always, Christopher! My 24-105 EF was my absolute favorite, go-to, walkaround lens for most applications. Having finally moved to mirrorless (R5 and R6 Mk II), it was a no-brainer to add the RF version to my bag (once I got my 100-500 and 200-800 lenses, that is). The 24-105 RF just came today, and I'm really looking forward to putting it through its paces!
I got one of the old EF 24-105/4 kit'd with my 5D mk2 back when that camera was launched. It's the only lens I've ever abused. I once managed to drop it by not having closed my camera bag and standing up, it fell out and landed on the sidewalk. It still works 100% but the filter screw thread got FUBAR bent. I've always been really impressed with my little 24-105 that it's still alive and kicking and I've since (knock on wood) never done something that stupid to my gear.
The fact every image in this review was taken with a "kit" lens demonstrates just how versatile this lens is. Honestly beautiful bokeh from an f/4 zoom.
@@beezymeech what do you call a lens that’s bundled with a camera body at a discount? I believe the overwhelming majority of photographers would call that…a “kit lens”. Haha the EF and RF 24-105 lenses have often been referred to as kit lenses for professional and semi professional bodies. I got my RF 24-105 included with my EOS R.
Thank you so so so much for getting the R camera, I got mine last month and love it! I’m really looking forward to seeing your reviews on the RF 2.8 lenses canon has coming later this year, again thank you for doing RF camera lenses!
Please dont change the way you reviewe in the future like some other youtubers. Your doing so great. These type of reviews are the best man. Oneday you should reach more than a million subs. Good luck!
I bought one of these for my wife. She uses it on her EOS RP. The focus speed on this lens is amazing. I have an EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L II that we used on her RP via the adapter and the focus speed on that lens isn't nearly as fast as this lens. Its also lightweight. We bought it pre-owned. We buy most of our Canon products either pre-owned or Canon refurbished. We save tons of $$$$$.
Thank you for comparing the IQ between the RF and EF models. I have the EF version and was curios if it was worth spending the money on the RF version. This review was very helpful. Thank you.
Absolutely fantastic review of the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4 lens. I was looking whole the RUclips community for someone like this guys to do these review biaselessly. Thanks #Chris thanks for being there.
Nice consideration given to filmmakers here. This lens looks to be quite viable for cinematography, and only a small fraction of the cost of a cine lens
Nicely done mate! Thanks a lot i learned quite a bit here. Bought my EOS R this weekend with the KIT lens and cant wait to test it. Cheers from Germany
great! honest unbiased review with tests, but more importantly your reasoned opinion. This is the one i wanted in my anticipated switch from Nikon to Canon, unless I look at it's lighter weight brother.
Whenever I search lens review in RUclips... There's always a top recommendation of a guy always saying and starting with very kindly and warmly welcome introduction saying "Howdy everyone"... Literally every lens clip you see... He explains so well in details vividly... Thanks bro.. hope you'll upload more lens reviews... Subscribed!!!
It really is that fast. I just tested it out yesterday and was amazed how nice the lens is. It feels good to use and the sharpness was amazing. I was actually there to test an older 17-40mm with no IS, also at f4. The results were very different hand held due to the extra zoom and the IS.
I've heard that the price disparity on camera equipment between the US, UK, Canada, etc, is mostly due to tax and import duties. If thats the case, I'd be complaining to your local government instead of the camera manufacturers. Great review, love your videos!
USA roads Really enjoyed new thing that you did in this review when you showed sharpness of 24mm 50mm 105mm in the center of the image one after another without zooming in effect, small thing but was better in my humble opinion
I really hope you'll be reviewing the RF 70-200mm f4 L IS USM soon. I understand few retailers started shipping it. I'm considering adding it to my landscape kit and really look forward to seeing you put it through its paces. Thanks for all the work you put into your reviews and for their invaluable help to us! All the lens I bought so far have only been those reviewed by you and which have gotten your "HR" or "R" ratings.
Thanks so much for this, clearly its no better than the average EF versions theres no option but to buy the 24-70 or 28-70 if image quality is important
I don't shoot Canon, however, 24-105 is a great zoom range. Not too wide of a range as to be a "jack of all trades, master of none", but yet wide enough to be highly useful in a majority of situations.
Great review! I like your method. Easy to see the difference from center to edge and the effects of stopping down. Any chance you'll review the new RF mount Rokinon 14mm f2.8?
@christopherfrost I follow you channel with high interest and am always impressed about your review and functional showcase. I do have a question, not sure if you easily could anwer this, but. After switching over to the Canon R system (R6), right now I am still working with my Tamron 24-70 f2.8 G2 lens. I do like this lens very much and I am happy about the image quality. I am a bit less happy with the extra weight and length due to the usage of the RF to EF mount adapter. I wonder, is going forward from the Tamron G2 to the Canon RF 24-105 f4 a step forwarth, even while you loose a stop of light. Do you think it is possible to give any opinoin about this question? I do appriciate any comment! Bless you and all the best
Looks pretty good to me, apart from the close-up image quality (and, related: minimum focus distance could be a bit closer). Of course there's always room for more improvements, for example regarding vignetting and work against light, but it's not too bad.
Judging by the flare test looks like this lens could produce some good sunstars, alot of times that bright light is just a white blob but saw some spiking here. I know the review of the wide angle 14-35 RF showed some amazing results for them, wondering if this captures anything similar...
I highly appreciate your reviews, Many thanks for suppoting my buying decisions. I got my copy together with the R5 last weekend and found in my converted files (from RAW to DNG) significant chromatic aberration, very pronounced at 105mm. I was thinking the exact same thing. All other reviews I've seen on the RF 24-105 says it's amazingly sharp. I personally have never been fan of the EF version specifically because it wasn't that sharp. I was excited to hear the new version was superb, but this review does not concur...
Really enjoyed your video, it's informative and spot on with what I wanted to know. In my opinion the ef works just as good but it might not be serviceable in 3 yrs or so years. I think the better choice is the much more expensive rf glass is a safer bet, for longevity.
Hi Chris, awesome video! Except as I was finishing up watching it I realised that this might be the wrong lens I was looking for. Would you possibly know if the Canon RF 24-105mm F/4.1 IS STM is similar?
7:19 "And zoom all the way in to a hundred-and-five millimetre, there's some fairly noticeable 'barrel distortion'." I'm sure you were trying to say 'pincushion distortion'.
Finally this review comes out. I was about to do my own testing. I got the EOS-R with the 24-105 kit lens for my new job. Super sharp. Your lens reviews are awesome. Test the RF 35mm f1.8 macro IS STM next =]

I'm currently waiting on a 28-70 to be delivered to replace my 24-105 and am watching this to assure myself it's worth the trade up. 😅 The fact that the RF version of this lens is almost indistinguishable from the EF version on sharpness etc reminds me of the "nifty fifty" which is clearly simply an EF version with a built in adapter and no noticeable optical improvements.

I don't have a copy of the newer Mark II lens unfortunately, but in my review I did find that the Mark II lens has about the same image quality as the Mark I
Thanks Chris, I purchased a used EF Mark II version because of the price drop. It seems some photographers sell their EF version because of this new RF version.
