    Go with 24-105 STM and buy RF 50mm 1.8 for portrait and low light and buy speed light for your camera Done.

    My choice for light weight compact travel gear includes Canon RF 24-105 F4-7.1 STM, Canon RF 16mm F2.8 and Canon RF 50mm F1.8 paired with R5! Stellar performance for light weight compact package!! Thanks for the review!!!

      Thanks for this. I just picked up a refurbished RP for $600 from Canon and was able to get a refurbished RF 24-105mm STM for $100 and the 50mm 1.8 for $80. All three with one year Canon warranties. Planning for street and travel photography so want light and versatile while good enough because I’m not a beginner.

    After 20+ years of using only DSLRs and EF/EF-S lenses, I finally made the move to mirrorless this year. I've got the R5, and the R6 Mk II (and may add the R5 Mk II as well, not quite sure yet). My all-time favorite lens on my DSLRs was the 24-105 EF. Just a nice, versatile, all-around good lens for most situations. Thus, it was a no-brainer to add the f/4 USM to my gear bag, once I took delivery of my 100-500 and 200-800 lenses. In fact, the f/4 just arrived today, and went directly from the box onto my R6.2. So far, so good. At this price point (I got a used one from UPP for less than I had expected to pay), it's a complete winner. I had given a bit of thought about the newer "Z" model of the 24-105, but it's way too expensive, and I also read a lot of comments that it's surprisingly heavy as well.

    The STM version is for those who use the longer focal lengths only outside in good light. If you need so shoot I'm inside events like concerts and want to pick details then the L version is what to choose. If you have a crop DSLR with typical 18-55 mm and then the STM version is all around 1 stop faster.

  •  4 года назад +17

    Thank you for the review. I was also trying both of these lenses and came to a similar conclusion - the STM doesn't lens look that good on paper, but when you don't think too much about its technical compromises, it can be a very versatile lens thanks to its size and macro capabilities. I kept the L lens, but I would love it to have a better magnification (like the Panasonic 24-105 has). Maybe I will buy a Marumi macro filter for it, but I'm not sure how well it works. I also noticed that the L lens is a bit wider at 24 than the STM.

    Dude!!! You have resolved my doubts. Its not my camera, its the lens. All these little issues I was having were driving me crazy to the point that I didn't even want to use this lens.

  • @Chuck8541

    One of the best comprehensive and technical reviews I've ever seen for these lenses. Easily a subscriber now. Thanks for the work, and good points. I think for low budget travel where I'm often in hostels (cheap/light - plus that red band of the L just signals how expensive it is!), and its macro abilities, I think I'll go for the STM version. I'd like to invest in some better glass for my new R6, but I'll have it on the road with me a lot. So weight is a big factor, plus I rarely use Jpegs from camera.
    Slight critique - when looking at comparisons, sometimes it was confusing when the L or the STM was sometimes on the bottom, then sometimes on the top. That was a tiny bit annoying. :)
    Keep up the great work! I'm looking forward to checking out your other vids, and seeing your future videos too!

    So interesting - it's weird to think you have to make certain sacrifices in the L lens like minimum focus distance... you'd think if it's going to be 3x the price it would be better in every single way.

    • @giancarloarrobarodriguez5291
      @giancarloarrobarodriguez5291 Год назад

      The L lenses are more quality and reproduce better the image but paying 3X between a STM is kind of hard… now RF STM are really good quality, not like EFS and EF which you see really the image dropping quit a bit because of the lens.

    I just received my 24-105 f4 L this week, but I fear something is not right: does yours have some noticeable parts moving inside when you turn it in your hand or slightly swing it? I can even hear it. I also have the 24-105 STM lens and it does not do this.

    • @superstringsbro
      @superstringsbro 8 месяцев назад +1

    • @okaro6595

      The kit is better as it is wider. 24 mm on APS-C is IMO too narrow on a zoom. Even 18 mm is not ideal, it should be 15 mm.

    lol, I have an R5 and definitely opt for the 4.0-7.1 stm version ;D It just has a way smaller packaging which is perfect for travel or in outdoor situations where you might not be able to pack much equipment. As the 24-105 is more of a everyday, ease of use holiday lens for me, I definitely opt for the savings in weight. Its almost double after all. The much better alternative (but also pricy) to the 24-105 STM would be the 24-70 f2.8 from my point of view.

      If you can afford it 24-105 f/4 L IS is the one to get. 24-240 would be good all in one solution as well. Otherwise look at primes like 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, or 85mm. These are all quite good

Maybe the industry is more reliant on editing software than I realized. I didn't plan on needing edits, but looked to them as frosting on the cake.... I was mistaken.
