    In the early 80's I did a set of corsets for a cast doing "The Importance of Being Earnest". At the end of the run, the girls refused to return the corsets. I had to resort to extraordinary threats and giving each one a copy of the pattern I had used to get them back. They LOVED their corsets.

      That is awesome! That means you made them to fit correctly! LOL. I find a corset SO much more comfortable than these stupid bras and the current undergarments. They hold better, they support much better, they're just REALLY comfy for me. And NO BACK PAIN!
      The fact that you had to run ragged to get them back means you did them well. Be proud of your work. You made GOOD corsets that fit properly! :)

    I've been learning to just not be ashamed of my corset line. I used to not be ashamed if the texture from the lace on my bra showed through, or the line from the straps or whatever, why should I care about my corset line? But also, sometimes that corset line is really cute and adds a little layer of texture to an outfit. Texture can help break up a solid blouse and can be really great if you don't want to go for a more plain look.

      Your corsettes are lovely and look comfortable on you but the best way to get information was by wearing them!
      How good to know about the back pain issue. I've heard that from many people and tho I can easily go braless at home, cuz I'm an A cup, I would like to see if wearing a corsette out and about would solve my body's total rejection of even the wide bottomed elastic and easy Lounge bras.
      With fibromyalgia, anything around my ribs like a bra is so uncomfortable to the point of pain, but I wonder.... Has anyone out with fibromyalgia ever worn a corsette comfortably?

    I started wearing a waist trainer a week ago. While the shape it gives to my waist is nice, it's the pressure it takes off my back and the aid it gives me in keeping good posture that have been the greatest benefit. And not to mention the pain reduction! I have chronic pain issues, especially in my back and neck. I've taken fewer pain meds this week.

    The Boudoir Key does such divine work, and I'm so glad you had a chance to showcase all the different stays/corsets in your collection and to conduct this experiment! I feel like *so* many people forget how easy it is to control the tightness and level of cinch in a corset with the use of lacing, and how difficult it is to force yourself through the discomfort of a too-high reduction, and how much of it is a visual illusion because your waist goes from a flatter oval shape to a more evenly-distributed circle; it's always a huge sigh of relief to hear from people who've personally actually experienced the compression and support of a corset firsthand, instead of the same many myths about broken ribs and fainting couches.

      @@LadyoftheDreamless14 if you have the opportunity, it really pays to have actual lessons. Then a professional can check your work and tell you how to improve which means your learning will be accelerated. If you can’t tho definitely study up on the importance of grainlines and bias in a fabric and how to read wrinkles in a garment. Most fitting issues can be solved by working out what is causing the wrinkles and how to ‘delete’ them. I’m in my second year of a BFA for costume for theatre. Getting the fit right and learning how to do that will have the biggest impact on how a final garment will look. The final finishing touches on how to finish seams and that can be easily altered later if you keep your old projects, and there are always multitudes of traditional and inventive ways to do so. I really encourage you to look at vintage sewing books and magazines. The oldies really knew how to do it. A lot of common information has been lost due to the rise in fast fashion but can be easily found in free publications. (After 100 years the copyright usually ends on written works).

I live in a small city where niche things like that are limited and... pretty much non-existant. That sounds about right, I've been struggling to wrap my head around the concepts but I'm also in school so its even harder lol. Thats awesome! If money where no object i think id go into historical dressmaking and archival work. I love the idea of knowing how the garments are constructed and how to preserve them. I'm terrified of surgers (they are loud and scary and they make seams sooooo narrow...) and zig zag stitching my ends. i got myself pinking shears and i love them! I'm hoping to try felling my seams down (I have Bernadette Banner's video saved. its not a tutorial but i got the idea). I want very much to read and browse old sewing books but I have no idea where to find them honestly. They did! They had an awesome handle on these things and I'm so sad that I'm struggling to find it. Ah fast fashion... a horrible temptress for my shopping problem, I do try to be responsible but thats so hard.
      Could I ask if you know of any online things I could browse/read? Or of any online classes that happen on weekends with video meetings? I'm about to sew up a skirt that I am no idea will sit right since I have no strong ideas on how fabric works lol, I'm crossing my fingers for myself!

    I love the shapes i can get, but mostly, i truly hate bras. I've resorted to use sports bra all the time, as they don't hurt me as bad.
    And corsets can give me the support for my breasts and my spine, so I would be prevented to keep my awful posture. And living in a such hot place (Brazil) I guess they would be an improvement.
    And yes, would love the video about all your corsets!
    And maybe a video about how to keep them... is there a special way to store them? How do I clean it? And how often? I guess machine washing is a no 😂

    If you make that in depth video about all your corsets (please do!), I'd be really interested in the pros and cons. Especially what shape or pattern works well in which situations since I'm looking to have one made our even try it out myself. I'm doing a lot of manual labour but I'm just so annoyed with bras. Where just aren't many well-fitting ones for women with a large bust but quite small waist. (I really like my curves but fashion designers apparently don't 😅)
    So, what I'm trying to say is, what would you from your experiences recommend to be a pattern that would be ideal for every day wear for someone with no office job?

    • @CatsCostumery
      @CatsCostumery  4 года назад +2

      oooh very interesting topic! I don't have personal experience with this as I have a very sedentary job, but I've found that a lot of corsets for more active people have less boning and more cording, which gives lots of support while being more flexible. I've heard of the 'Pretty Housemaid Corset' which was an 1890s mass produced corset that was aimed at the active housemaid in the 19th century - it might be useful to do some research into that one :)

    I am sure that corsets would help me with my back pain, the bra straps digging into my shoulders, as well as the constant self-conscious checking everything is right in place. Bras are enemies of big busts.

    • @ciannacoleman5125
      @ciannacoleman5125 3 года назад +1

      If your bra straps are digging in then your band is too loose, they are meant to stabilize not support. You likely are wearing the wrong size bras. Personally I like my everyday bras but think a corset might be perfect to replace my strapless because I have a large chest as well and think it would be more comfortable than the strapless bras I have tried. The back support is also a good point on the side of the corset.

I have been able to maintain the 24 inch waist for some 21 years and my reshaped wait is permanent and I have to keep wearing the 24 since all my clothes are custom altered to my measurements 42-24 -40!

    So. I have watched the Cosplay group of fantastic people making historical clothing for nigh onto a year now. ...and I'm not a historical seamstress. Yet. I'm moving forward in my plans of what I want to make, materials lists, etc. Then, my husband hits me with plans of wanting to move my office/craft room. This should get done soon...as soon as E. Texas weather permits. We've had a hurricane and a tropical storm in the past month. Once my building gets moved, I get everything back in and placed as I want it...THEN I'll start sewing my underthings. I'm excited! And YES!...I'd be >thrilled< to take a tour of your Historical Underwear! (that didn't sound weird at all, did it? lol ) Thank you for taking the time to share the more practical side of your craft! It was extremely informative.

    I'm in Kentucky so it way to hot an humid for a bra much less a corset during the summer for me, but the rest of the year I live in them. They are great for light house work and save my back while sewing. They also make a great base layer in cold weather, I can skip a bulky coat when doing outdoor chores in winter. I always get a lot of questions about were I got mine when I wear them out. I'm of course happy to send them to the Bad Button in Frankfort. Funny you put this up I just pulled mine out for the first time since spring and am getting used to them again
