    I totally see the point in that the intestines have to migrate during pregnancy to make room for a baby and I have a feeling that corsets don't cause harm but, to be intellectually honest, one must also take into account that during pregnancy, hormones make many changes in the body making the bones and other structures more flexible so there is a difference in what's going on with the body and those changes when one is pregnant than when at other times.

      Yes, but if your lacing is done slowly over time, in a similar way that pregnancy happens over the course of 9 months, your colon would also likely not be pinched, but would gradually shift out of the way.

      Yikes. I have done pretty awful things to my body. I have also studied and taught Pilates since 2000. I wore a mild waist trainer around for a couple of days and basically put myself into a bed rest only pain situation for two months? I had heard that they were good for helping keep your posture good, by constantly reminding you to stay in attention to your movements. No way, ever again....

    I think it's a pity that they didn't take the time to lace down slowly, this way the test is not really representative.
    I once read a book by a doctor, and of course he was against corsets, but he had to come to the conclusion that in his experience healthy women had no adverse effects from corsets, I think the book was about a hundred years old, it was on a wiki page, but I can't find it :(

In today's age of instant gratification, there is a risk for young people to rush into things without doing proper research, or without really taking the time (such as the nine months a baby takes to push your organs out of the way) to learn to use the corset properly. On a personal level, I think girls also have too much self worth centered on their looks. They shouldn't have to change their bodies to feel accepted. :)

I wore a medical back brace for severe scoliosis throughout high school and I think you're right: there needs to be more research on how it affects different parts/systems of the body. However, corsets are less rigid than braces and I spent a lot of time being x rayed, so perhaps we just don't know what orthopedic surgeons know.

    +andrea your comment settings are not allowing me to reply to your comment. Some of my friends started out asymmetric and the corset helped restore symmetry - but it depends on the cause of your asymmetry - for instance, it could be muscular, or it could be skeletal. If it's skeletal, it could be mild scoliosis, or it could be a twisted pelvis, or it could have been the result of one side of your ribcage not being the same as the other side from a past injury, for example. The corset can help with muscular asymmetry and even scoliosis in some situations, but for a rotated ribcage, not so much. I have another video on corsets and asymmetry here:

I wear one every day, I have an umbilical hernia and refuse to do the mesh surgery(or ATM any surgery) and the dr said I could manage it as long as it (the intestine) doesn't collate(?get stuck out so you can't retract it) at that point it's immediate surgery.. she was surprised when I asked about waist clinchers and corsets, and said to cinch slowly... I did.. underbust corsets make my boobs big (man boobs at 150lbs..?) which I don't mind and usually actually like😉... overbust ones give me a more real looking chest for a guy, either way my bowel movements are much better,guessing it was a posture thing, my belly button stays in longer after wearing a corset and my back is forced to stay straight,a big help as I'm in construction type work and I homestead so garden firewood etc is pretty physical too.. I always pick the pretty ones and occasionally wear it over the skirt!!

    interesting that the brass was not a problem in a MRI, as use an oscillating magnetic field, which is also what they use to remove aluminium cans in recycling plans after having used a non-oscillating magnetic field ferromagnetic parts.
    I think it has something to do with changing magnetic field inducing a current in the metal which then create a magnetic field opposite the original field.
    and good video, to bad that they video isn't as easy to rip as youtubes.

    • @LucysCorsetry
      @LucysCorsetry  10 лет назад

      Given a strong enough magnetic field, any metal can be magnetic - maybe the field is stronger in recycling plants than they are in an MRI machine? Brass is an alloy from copper and zinc, and although it's pretty well-known that copper is weakly magnetic, I suppose not enough to react in the machine. It was good that they checked it first, though. :)

    • @steamcastle

      ***** well depending on the length of the non-magnetic but conducting bones and frequency, I thing that it would mess up the data more then it would be dangerous for the person being scanned. but German plastic boning I do think was a good idea.
      and in that case it being a ring means no ends to arc from, which is a good thing and mean that at most they will just heat up a bit
      ***** are you left handed ?

    • @LucysCorsetry
      @LucysCorsetry  10 лет назад

    The misconception of corsets lies in the fact that most women do not follow the main rule when lacing up, yet afterwards all too many claim they can't breathe properly, and what's sad, is the rule is so bloody simple. 1) the corset should not be lined in satin, but linen or cotton, this will allow for better grip & a lit less slippage. 2) the boning must be spring steel, not plastic. Coil is ok, but spring steel is the absolute best. If the one you buy has plastic, then change the plastic pieces for soring steel. 3) You must remember that the object is to create a nice silhouette, & waist training takes time. And 4) The corset/bustier should be snug, but Not tight around your ribs, tight about your waist (approx 2" above & below,) & snug about your hips. Here's the easy way to achieve this.
    Placement is very important. Once is place, & lightly snug it up. Next adjust as needed. Now reaching behind you, grab ahold of the strings, & standing as erect as possible, take the deepest breathe you can, lifting your chest as high as possible, whilst sucking in your tummy hard as you can, & while holding your breathe, pull on the stings as hard as you can in one pull. Do this by bringing you forearms towards your tummy. Crossing the strings, you can carefully transfer the stings to the opposite hands then tie either in front or in back. Of course with help, it wont be so much trouble.
    now that your laced, you will not have any trouble breathing. Why, because you took the deepest breathe possible; ergo, you still can.

    In my opinion corsets are beautiful for special occasions, and dressing up. Not for a daily garment. Also I tend to favor making corsets that don't use the steel boning. Some people may consider rigilene and plastic boning to be "cheap or lesser quality". I beg to differ. At least these materials allow for movement while offering support. My concern is supporting the breasts, then I consider the waist. Any good corset will cinch the waist steel boning or plastic boning. Also, I think in 2017 we should look at alternative ways of making corsets. Currently I am experementing with different style lines, materials, etc. It is really fun to challenge my sewing skills. Currently I am working on my second sample corset. Lots of trial and error, but I am certainly not making anything that will shift organs!

    Do you get that the human body is more complex than just some organs sitting around in the body? There is lymphatic fluid moving through the body, blood pressure, the way the colon is able to make peristaltic waves and so much more that people just ignore because they think wearing a corset is healthy. Honestly, something that hinders you doing activities like running, yoga or other sports ultimately can't be healthy. Doing it longterm won't be healthy for sure. And if it's only a few short periods of time, then do as you wish, but do not believe that you can alter the shape of your body without having to pay for it with you health.

I have videos on corsets and blood pressure, and my upcoming book features several people who have had their corset-wearing cleared by their doctors to help stabilize their orthostatic hypotension. Moreover, I never condone wearing a corset during physical activity (I've made several videos and articles about this as well.) A well-made, bespoke corset made by a corsetiere trained in orthopedic technology is structurally no different from a medical back brace, and is in many ways more customizable. This video happens to feature a tightlacer, but there are many other practical applications to corsetry that can't be ignored, and studying their affects on the body will help to improve the safety and functionality of other medical ortheses as well.

    the trick to get benefited in shaping while not harming urself is a lot easier. be moderate dont be extreme. if its meant to be as tight as it makes uncomfortable and even give some pains at the beginning, then go for one size upper. at least it helps to shape and give postur, comfortable but not lazy comfy, it is a type of comfortable that u find easier to rest ur straight postur, that is without the waist tights the effort to maintain that postur is more difficult that the waist thing helps make it more convenient. this item should works in way it helps not trouble u, except with some moderate efforts. let the bigger part of slimming and losing fats go to good diet and exercises. dont depend so much on waist train. this thing should just be the coating that support the real works within. be real, be healthy.

      They can shift but if it is in a way where there is not proper blood flow,that is deadly. Blood clots,organ necrosis. The problem is some women wear them way too tight,and for too many hours during the day for faster results. Like she said slowly is fine. With pregnancy the shifting is gradual and a different force of pressure. Do you know what they use in corsets to push everything in,strips made of steel.

Can you suggest a good value for the money corset? My goal is to use it as an assistant in weight loss and a good posture reminder to help me breathe around my asthma better. I also love your hair. Mine is down past my tail bone and very wavy. You inspired me to keep growing it in spite of peer pressure to cut it. I'm 45 years old and it's turning white. My in-laws say I'm too old for such girlish hair. They're Danish and I live in Denmark. My American family grows their hair long to honor our American Indian ancestors. Best wishes

      I don't suggest using a corset if you are asthmatic. Corsets can push up the diaphragm causing little room for lungs to expand. We are meant to "belly breathe" which allows for maximum air intake and corsets do not allow for easy belly breathing. I am not against corsets but I advise against using one in your case where your breathing is already compromised.

It has had no adverse effect on my asthma, but I did find something interesting in that my incidence of anxiety attacks has dropped quite dramatically since I started wearing the corset. +LauraBeth Scibetta Your corset might be a little small around the ribcage - there are different types of corsets (for instance the one in this video is designed to cup around the ribcage instead of compressing the ribs). This allows you to take a deeper breath. You can give yourself more room in the top by lacing the corset with a lacing gap like "V". It might not be a perfect fit, but comfort should come first.

      +StarKnightizm Hello! With exception to the reproductive organs, the peritoneal organs are very much the same. Men can perform vacuum stomach and Nauli Kriya, so they can definitely shift their organs temporarily and rapidly - and if they wear a corset that is small or dramatic enough, it's my opinion that males can experience some organ shifting from corsets as well (although so far, all of the live scans on corset wearers have been female). If you have any concerns specifically I'd always recommend that you speak with your doc.

      Actually, yes. The TV show host is an MD. I've discussed corsets with two other local MDs, a chiropractor, and multiple psychologists. I personally know of several nurses who wear therapeutic corsets for POTS or hypermobility, at reductions comparable to that shown in the MRI. I also know of doctors who prescribe corsets (not just braces - corsets, like that in the video) for patients who have connective tissue disorders, to prevent their liver from dropping into their lower belly. The only organ notably changed is the large intestine, as stated in the video. Intestines constantly squirm on their own due to peristalsis. Bending over to tie your shoes or eating a big Thanksgiving meal also change the position and shape of your organs temporarily. Changing position is not the same as changing morphology or function.

    It is not accurate at all to portrait the accommodation of organs in pregnancy vs corset use. Pregnancy pretty much changes female physiology not only from the physical appearance but also chemically/hormonally point of view. Changes are huge and until this day we do not know 100% all the changes from a scientific and medical establishment. The strong hard data is lacking regarding corset long term use and the effects on the human body. However, one has to think about the fact that the human body is so perfectly rearranged and created that everything is in the right place from the get-go...Human organs, and the symmetry of these have rearranged in a way influenced by gravity. There is a reason why astronauts do not stay a long time in space...Interesting topic.

  • @r0xanner0cket
    @r0xanner0cket 9 лет назад

    Every persons body is different and organs can be positioned differently. For this information to be viable you'd have to do a huge study based upon many different factors. You also mentioned this is a game show. Sorry, but I think that this should be studied, not gossiped about.

    • @LucysCorsetry
      @LucysCorsetry  9 лет назад +12

      +Roxanne Wright 4:15 of the video, I said that I would love to do a broader study on how different silhouettes of corsets affect many people who have different size and orientation of their organs - also how experienced they are, whether they're male or female, and if they've ever been pregnant. True that a study of n=1 isn't a comprehensive study, but scientific evidence doesn't count for nothing. "Gossip" in my opinion is the 200-year-old game of broken telephone where people have spread rumours of women surgically removing their ribs for aesthetic purposes (this wasn't a viable procedure during the corset era) or that corsets were the cause of "hysteria", sepsis, etc.

  • @Fizzypopization
    @Fizzypopization 6 лет назад

    • @LucysCorsetry
      @LucysCorsetry  6 лет назад

      Fizzypopization Good point! But different types of steel have different amount of iron content depending on its use. Tool steel is different from spring steel. Spring steel needs to be softer and more malleable/ flexible, which also makes it good in corsets, while tool steel is a bit too rigid. Tool steel that has a rainbow/ blueish color to it has also been incorrectly tempered and can be brittle / shatter if stressed too much!
      I have never seen steel bones for corsets that are non-ferrous, so it was probably cheaper and easier for the maker to source plastic boning. :)

      No one wants their organs permanently reshaped. This scan demonstrates that the organs move readily, mostly just air pockets in the intestines move out of the way and go back into their natural positions when the corset is off. A well-fitted corset worn responsibly does not impact the health of the wearer. Practices like yoga will move the organs too, as well as natural phenomena like digestion and pregnancy, and medical devices like back braces. That's the summary of the video.

      then they either are wearing significantly less restrictive types, or wearing them less tight, and the illness is under control hopefully. good for them. i hope to get my ailments in good order too.
      and...... i Definitely dont remember writing asthma patients Dont or Cant wear them.
      i wrote, ask them having properly placed lungs are any good, if the breathing function is somehow (in their case its airways) restricted.
      ......... do they really say the placement of lungs are the only thing that effect breathing? really? ......... ? that so long as lungs, like theirs, are normally placed, like theirs, that means its as good as it gets breathingwise?
      i know you didnt say that! but i havent said asthma patients cant wear it too.
      i meant the video says, chest cavity organs were not displaced appreciatively. (that i disagree as i have written) i meant it doesnt matter, because, chest cavitys organs are mobile kind. like bowels. unlike kidneys, spleen, liver, pancreas, uterus etc....... but even if it was, properly placed organs are, yes needed for good function, but not enough! for especially mobile organs! such as lungs and heart.
      and people always dismiss heart. chests inner pressure effects blood flow of main vessels, and changes the rythm of the heart. corsets may not affect it that much, because lungs and diaphragm changes it every moment. some arithmias can be controlled by controlling breathing, but i am not a cardiac doctor, so could have misunderstood its theuropatic capability.

  • @ismata3274
    @ismata3274 5 лет назад

    so have i misunderstood or is the video really saying that a constricted abdominal cavity didnt have an effect on breathing? not even such constricted one.
    let me say i reeeeeeeeally doubt it.
    to breathe,
    1) you pull your ribs up by your muscles, which increases the diameter of the conic barrel we call chest.
    so anything not letting chest expand Will decrease the end volume. how much it will decrease will depend on the restriction ofcourse.
    2) you have a diaphragm, which is a tight elastic sheet under the chest, above the abdomen. its shape when you exhale is a high dome. like an open umbrella.
    when you inhale it contracts, by doing so becomes flatter, presses the abdominal organs down, and pulls the underside of the lungs down to its newly conquered space which was abdominal cavity land just a second before.
    and when your diaphragm presses down on guts and the like, abdominal wall expands to give space to them.
    so, firstly, by restricting stomachs expansion, you re not giving the space needed to the organs of abdominal cavity at the end of inhaling.
    secondly, by pushing the abdomen in, you re creating a positive pressure there, which is working in the opposite direction to the diaphragms pushing down effect, so it cant get as flat as it can now.
    like the plunger of a syringe thay you cant pull all the way because some wise artist added an arch that stops it midway, say, when the plunger gets to the 5 ml or 8 ml mark. good job administrating the usual, say 10 ml drug dose now, you need to use the syringe more than once, thats a fact you cant escape. now how many times you need to use the syringe depends on the artists archs restricting point, meaning how tight you lace the corset.
    if a corset doesnt effect the expansion of both chest and abdomen (those muscles are all small and are not strong enough to rip the restricting clothes apart, so corset needs to be really loose, or if you prefer to call it barely if any laced one can, for this to apply), and somehow dont put positive pressure on the abdominal cavity thus fighting against diaphragms pressure, yes Then it will not negatively effect breathing.
    other than that, one just needs to look at the athletes clothing, or martial arts, or a full plate armour (real ones! not metal corsets!).
    as far as i know, admittedly i am not a historian and might have missed much, males Really Using their Body didnt restrict their chest and abdomen.
    aaaand now let me sit and watch examples of such males pile up.....:)
    edit: i am only against the notion that corsets doesnt effect breathing. not saying anything about working class womens garments. again, not a historian here, but those women must have barely if any laced their corsets, or somehow the didnt constrict all the abdomen, giving space for organs to expand. which might only result in less restricted breathing, good enough to work, but let me recommend a google search. intraabdominal pressure hernia -with or without pregnancy-.
    ukhealthcare.uky.edu/wellness-community/health-information/pregnancy-hernia
    www.medscape.com/answers/189563-45205/what-increases-intra-abdominal-pressure-and-may-cause-an-abdominal-hernia
    dont look for the word corsets in these pages please, they probably havent thought of tight lacing while writing them.

      As I explained under your other comment... my videos and my written posts discussing corsetry’s effect on the respiratory system can be found with a quick google search. This particular physician said that the large bowel was the most affected system, based on MRI imaging, not based on symptomatology. You’re welcome to watch the video clip.

      @ismata3274 5 лет назад

      @@LucysCorsetry and,
      as i have written in my edit (before you have answered my comment) i am not saying they allllll were restrictive devices, and the ones that are for sure could have been worn less restrictively, for obvious work related reasons. one can don a sports bra, or one can put on such a bra that digs and results in sores. or two person can wear same regular kind bra, one very tight for keeping a respectable chest shape as some rigit work environments would not let one look sloppy, and another one loose for their work would not let them use a tight one.
      again, as i have written before the edit, on the main part, if a corset doesnt restrict expansion of chest and abdomen, and doesnt put positive pressure on the abdomen yes then breathing may not get effected. (that would mean different kind s or models of corsets. maybe they exist. in fact they must exist, because you have said in another answer to me that asthmatic people wear corsets. so either the illness is under good control, and/or the corsets they use are not that restrictive)
      and yes i have watched some of your respiratory videos. not all i admit. but even there you yourself say the basal parts of the lungs generally get restricted. yes, i know basal third of lungs are not used in normal deskwork environment. but not using something but perfectly being able to use it if you, say, need to run to catch something, or worse run from something as a female is not the same as not being able to use it if you dont thake it off.
      and some youtube videos show lung respiration capacity loss about 200 to 300 ml per every breath. and document the body starts increasing the breath rate to compansate.
      yes. they can, and for sure had been worn less restrictively, (for how would women collect harvest, but i dont think they were called corsets. stays? i dont know the name.) even you re not saying they didnt restrict breathing as far as i understand. but if i am not mistaken the answer "it restricts effects lungs" was the wrong one among the 3 answers. that implies breathing was not effected appreciatively. which can not reliably be tested by mri (not by the regular ones at least and not if extreme changes are present). the video implied, -yes didnt say buy solidly implied- the bowels were effected. period!. bowels are such organs that get effected only very extreme luminal restriction is somehow gained or something restricts its blood flow, which both are very hard for a corset to do, without doing something worse to other organs, but its possible to harm bowels too, we re human 😓 and are capable, yes.

    Can you wear corsets under things like shirts

    • @LucysCorsetry

      Yes, of course! Before the 1980s punk/ goth movements, everyone wore their corsets and girdles under their clothes. Nowadays it’s called stealthing.

    Corsets are fine as long as you're not extremely tight lacing and crushing your organs!

    Is it true that corsets can cause or worsen uterine prolapse?

    • @LucysCorsetry
      @LucysCorsetry  7 лет назад +2

      While there's no definitive research that shows that corsets cause prolapse (because prolapse has been said to be caused by many things, including loss of muscle tone, pregnancy, heavy lifting, etc.), it is true that corsets can exacerbate a pre-existing condition. People who already have a uterine prolapse may feel an uncomfortable pressure if they wear a corset, and I discourage people from wearing corsets if they cause discomfort or pain, or have contraindications. I have a video about corsets and the reproductive system here: ruclips.net/video/lZc-0GXhluc/видео.html

    I was wanting to do waist training but with a corset ( i dont know the proper term sorry) not to an extreme extent just to give me a more defined hourglass shape. would it have a negative impact on my body internally? I was thinking about asking my doctor because i have had trouble with my kidneys in the past. I am also a softball player so i do not want to cause any harm to my body. If anyone could help that would be great, im sorry if i sound clueless im only 15 lol.

    • @LucysCorsetry
      @LucysCorsetry  7 лет назад +1

      Wearing a corset at a light reduction usually isn't an issue for someone perfectly healthy, but I don't recommend corsets to people over the age of 18 because it is a form of body modification. Also because you have a history of kidney issues, I recommend you speak to your doctor about it (if you're still interested after you turn 18).

    Hi Lucy, I have recently stumbled upon your channel and i fell in love instantly it persuade me to purchase my first corset from orchard corset the cs-411 and i am in love there is not one thing i dont love about it until today i ran into a little situation with my corset. I was in a rush this morning i was all laced up and ready to go until i got into my car. now how in the world do you drive with a corset? I mean i was all over the wheel and i couldn't help it lol not to mention i felt all eyes were on me. I even drove with my hand over the wheel like i was cool but it wasn't working. please help have you ever had this situation and how do you do it?

    • @LucysCorsetry
      @LucysCorsetry  10 лет назад +1

      Driving in a corset is honestly one of the trickiest things, which is why I haven't made a video about it yet. I did write a guest blog on Timeless Trends about it though:
      timeless-trends.com/traveling-in-your-corset
      But the bottom line is, if you cannot drive safely (turn to check your blind spot, etc), then loosen or take off your corset until you get to your destination. Safety and proper operation of a heavy machine always comes before fashion!

I'm a stay at home mom and I'm in the car a lot. Any ways thank you for bringing this to my attention, in reading the link Lucy corsetry left I am thinking I will wait many months before if ever I attempt to drive in one (probably not haha). Three beautiful children I have to be fully in control. Anyways thank you so much again😉

    Lucy, if you truly believe their would be different results for the MRI scans under the various conditions you mentioned, then you should demonstrate it, instead of talking about it. It definitely seems, from an outsider's perspective, that your video is based in self-interest to allay your viewer's/customer's concerns about corsets. Please, use evidence, anything else is disingenuous.

      Corsets don't hurt if they fit you properly. :) Eden was tightlaced in this video, but even she mentioned that she wasn't in pain. There's also no requirement to wear a corset nearly as tightly as her - some (tightlacing) corsets are the equivalent of 4-inch heels, while other (orthopedic/ bracing) corsets are the equivalent of orthotic shoes.
