      I just saw the thumbnail and havent watched the video yet, but, wouldnt it be infinetely easier to have a centre front opening busk? Theyre not that hard to order online. Or at the very least front button closure like a ferris corset? Wearing one often with just back lacing makes me tired and sore just thinking about it, even my 1780s stays front lace! Not a critique, tho, your work is amzing and i love watching your channel!

      @@RychaardRyder Thanks Kendrick! I specifically chose this one as just back lacing, as it's meant to be a lightweight summer sports corset. I'm really used to lacing into stays often or into corsets, so while I do have some with busks, this specific one doesn't have a busk 😊

    Big busted here: corsets give fantastic bust support (at least the ones I have from 1780s and 1900). A corset actually feels "lighter" because a modern bra hangs off your shoulders (yes the band is supposed to provide the support, but modern elastic bands are not that supportive, more just tight). A bra feels like it pulls down and in at the ribcage. But a nice corset transfers all the support points of a bra (narrow band, shoulder points, underwire poking) across the entire torso, so that you feel uplifted and secure.

      @@MostBoringNameEver I don’t- I wear just a corset. I wouldn’t want to wear a bra under a corset, I think that would be uncomfortable. I know some people combine bras with underbust corsets though, and that works for them, but I personally prefer just a good overbust corset.

      My ex was a big girl, and spent quite a lot of money getting fitted for a gorgeous front-laced corset, red trimmed in black, of the style with the separate board-like thing behind the lacing (not sure of the correct terms, sorry!). She'd wear it out when the occasion suited (and looked fabulous in it!) and she'd often get "aren't you uncomfortable in that?", to which she replied precisely this. 100% secure and supported. She said she always felt more comfortable in the corset than anything low-cut/scoop necked/off the shoulder due to the fact that "mishaps" simply weren't a possibility. Of course, it's not always appropriate to be showing that much boob, even if they are very safely ensconced. :)

    I can't remember where I saw it but somebody has pointed out that historically ladies tight laced their corsets just like modern women wear shapewear/spanx: sometimes you just want that look for fashion or to show off for someone, or maybe you need to fit into a special dress. If you only did it now and then it wouldn't be any more uncomfortable or damaging than the high heels you'd probably wear to the same event.

    • @VBirchwood
      @VBirchwood  2 года назад +30

      Exactly! It would have been reserved for more special occasions, and likely was only done by wealthier individuals.

    • @sixstringedthing

      I suppose that a lot of negative perceptions come from portrayals in media of women/girls being "forcibly" laced into corsets and the whole affair being made to look distinctly uncomfortable and tedious, whenever this suited the narrative. In real life I'd assume that it was simply a necessary part of a rather more joyful process, that of getting dressed up in finery for a special occasion. Although, as with modern formal wear, I'm sure it would have been nice to kick off the shoes and change into something more comfortable at the end of the evening. :)

    I have a larger bust, and I find that corsetry can provide excellent bust support. Because it takes the weight of the bust from below and distributes the weight of the best evenly across the entire torso, it’s a much more comfortable form of support to me than a bra, which only adds to my back pain.
    Different eras will support the bust in different ways- the 1870s has a fairly low bust, and the regency period has boobies up to the chin! So it’s more about where you personally prefer your bust position to be, I find. I prefer corsets with a lower bust position, because I sit in a wheelchair, and corsets (and bras for that matter) can push the bust up higher when sitting. But if you want the best push up bra ever invented, regency is the go.
    I won’t go back to a bra. I need the back support, but it’s also more supportive and more comfortable than a bra (and it does the job of a back brace).

    • @VBirchwood
      @VBirchwood  2 года назад +7

      Thanks for sharing your experience Katherine! And you make a very good point about how different eras support breasts differently. The part about Regency stays and boobies up to the chin made me giggle 😂

    A Historical note on corsetry: women had many types of corsets (seen in antique magazines) as in a morning corset, riding corset, maternity corset (has the same job as a pregnancy belt), corset for married ladies (seen it in Der Bazar and it has a pouch in the bottom and I think it looks really similar to maternity corsets) etc...

    I personally wear more modern corsets and I wear them over a tank top or camisole (to help keep them clean and to prevent chaffing). They do not provide the same silhouette as a modern bra under modern clothes but, personally, it does not bother me as they do provide me with a more sleek silhouette and better bust support. I know some work places require "proper or adequate undergarments" and if I would ever have to deal with one that thought corsets were not "proper" or "adequate" I would willingly argue about how painful and uncomfortable I find bras as well as the other advantages I've found wearing a corset over a bra.

  • @kiridpatterson
    @kiridpatterson Год назад +16

    I am someone with a rather large bust and as such, have struggled for years trying to find a bra that is both comfortable and supportive enough without success and ultimately started seeking out alternatives. I wound up hearing about corsets but then hesitated for several years to try getting one due to cost. Ultimately I stumbled upon a site called Corset Story that sells premade and generally more modern looking corsets that are at a price I was willing to pay. Again though, I was still a bit wary of them and it took over a year (granted they were in storage for a large part of it) before I did more than wear them more experimentally. I've been wearing one at least 5 days per week for over two months now and will say that they provide far superior bust support than any bra I've ever tried, and without the irritating band and straps that are always either too tight or too loose.

    I stopped the moment I got to Bulgaria and everyone was taking off their shoes at the door; it had just NEVER occurred to me before. ALSO - outside clothes. Bulgarians get changed to go out the door. They dont slob around the house in nice clothes crumpling them and wearing them out OR go out in slobby clothes. I FULLY recommend this from a mental health perspective...! >>>
    I work with victims of abuse and depression and its really GOOD to have that set of nice clean clothes that you KNOW you look nice in when you go out - even if its just to the shop or the supermarket. Its a great habit to get into, and your clothes last much longer, need much less washing.

      good for your friend, but I hope she's aware brastraps are supposed to only carry 20% of the weight of someone's bust. • @katherinemorelle7115
      @katherinemorelle7115 2 года назад +5

      @@gittevandevelde2208 there’s just no way that an elasticated and very narrow band around the ribs could ever provide that much support, and especially not when you’ve a heavy bust. I could have my bands so tight they’re breaking my ribs and they just can’t support the weight of my breasts all that well. Certainly nowhere near as well as a corset can.
      I think that 80% figure maybe works for people with smaller busts- like DD and below. It doesn’t work for me, that’s for sure. And I’ve decided I’m not paying corset prices for bras that are much less comfortable and where the elastic rib band gives out so quickly anyway. Much comfier and cheaper to go with a corset.

    I've recently started wearing a corset everyday while working from home.
    Before discovering corsets, my desk job requires a lot of sitting, and I noticed my posture starting to deteriorate.
    I accidentally saw a video on corset history and a light dawned. The pay-off? I can't slump over my computer, my digestion is better (reduced GERD), my corset bears the weight of my heavy 38G breasts like an exoskeleton. I lived daily with mid-back pain between my shoulder blades, but my underbust corsets redistribute the weight load to my hips. I rest the underwire on top of the corset, and I can feel my back relax.

      I can’t stand underwear pressure during periods, because it’s one thin band that kinda digs in a bit. But a corset provides even pressure over a much larger area, so it’s more like a hug, or the weight of a hot water bottle on your abdomen.

    I made my stays with a pattern from Redthreaded, but manly because it was the only Ressource I knew about. I very much adore the outcome, though. However, I have the slight suspicion that I might be short waisted, too, because I had to shorten the back and the stays are still poking into my armpits. I think, I'll have to rip off the binding and trim the whole thing back... yey! (I'm still procrastinating😁)
    I don't wear my stays on a daily basis, also because they don't work with all trousers that I like to wear, but by now, they're broken in, and apart from the armpit-stabbing, I don't really notice it as well. Touching my feet is tough though, and I wouldn't dream of cart wheels, but that's not the stays' fault.
    Generally, a very wonderful video (again), with you speaking Russian as an extra delight on top. (I looove it. I only speak a teeny tiny bit, but that will change, I promise 😁)

      Hahaha I don't blame you for procrastinating, it can be such a pain to go back and alter old projects! Especially big alterations. But yes, if you are feeling it digging into your armpits, most likely you are short waisted. You could measure C7 vertebrae to waistline and then waistline to hips, and compare those to what is available on your pattern. The standard centre back length for most patterns is usually somewhere between 16-17 inches I've found. My centre back is 14.25 inches for reference lol. So perhaps you have a similar thing.

I sent them my measurements and they were actually able to take one of the ones they had in stock and alter it to fit me. I fully expected changes would have to be made but that wasn't the case. They got me a perfect fit the first time!

I have severe allergies and I've had days I've deliberately choosen to wear one longer as its helped ease the pain in my diaphram and abdomen from coughing so much as the boning helps to brace the muscles in front as much as they do the back.

    I wear an underbust corset (20” TT Gemini is my favorite) every day when I’m home and most nights when I sleep. I find it calming and helpful for anxiety, and it helps me sleep. It’s hard to explain why but I really love the pressure. I have never found an overbust that fits me well enough to wear for long periods - most of them don’t have enough curve at the waist and don’t give me the compression I want, so I generally wear a bra with the underbust corset unless I’m going for a fashion effect with the overbust. My body, for whatever reason, seems to take well to corsets and I definitely get the most benefit really cinched in. I don’t generally wear them out though. People like to comment on things that are none of their business. Most of the comments seem to come from women who think it’s anti-feminist to wear a corset - I’m a strong feminist! - or who just have to ask silly questions like whether I can breathe. Corsets are just an article of clothing that seem to help some people feel better (and make some people feel worse) - we should all do what works for our bodies.
    During the day when I can’t get away with stealthing a corset I often wear a latex waist trainer or some kind of shapewear which gives some, but not all, of the benefits of corseting.

      @@VBirchwood Hi and thank you for our kind and thoughtful reply . I truly appreciate great content and historically accurate information regarding corsets and corsetry . There is [ are ] so many that think a corset should be worn with laces closed . In doing so you chance damaging the corset and possibly getting needless irritation and discomfort . As you mentioned a corset should have at least 1 ~ 2 " of space and ideally the grommet stays should be parallel , to allow for natural 'spring" of the corset.
      I purchase my corsets from Etsy as well , although I have not purchased a newer one for several months , it is so true that ' off-the-rack corsets very rarely fit properly and are for the most part poorly made. Another great video. Thanks for answering some of my questions. I know I had so many and you couldn't answer all. One thing I am really interested in is what age would be appropriate for my 13 eye old daughter to start wearing a proper corset? She has been watching all the corset videos out there lately and really wants to try corsetry. I come from a dancer's background and i know most girls aren't recommended for pointe shoes until they are at least 12, due to their bones are still too soft. So naturally I don't want to put her in a proper corset before her body is ready, which is still growing and changing. I don't want to risk altering her development by allowing her to wear one too soon. Another was for closure options aside from a busk, you briefly said something about buttons but didn't go into great detail about it. If you wouldn't mind taking a few moments out of your busy day to answer those it would be awesome. 😊
    I wore a cheap corset from amazon, during a family outing a few weeks ago. I've been having a lot of back pain lately and I wanted something more discreet than wearing the ugly elastic back brace. While we were out I got my period. Usually the pain is crippling for me, especially when the sciatica flares up. The corset allowed me to walk around relatively pain free all day. I hardly noticed the pain until I took the corset off. So I highly recommend corsets for menstruation. 10 out of 10 😉

    • @VBirchwood
      @VBirchwood  2 года назад +7

      Hi DesertRose! Thanks for your comment.
      I answered the age question in the description box, but I'll just summarise here. Typically 18+ is recommended for corsetry, as I think there just isn't enough research on how it impacts the bodies of minors, since the body grows and develops even into our 20s. Because of that I've always just read 18+ is best, though I'd ask her doctor perhaps to see what they say. (Since I'm not a doctor, only saying this for legality reasons, because you KNOW I'm not a doctor 😂).
      As for the busk alternative, you could do a combination of front, back, or both lacing, along with button or fastening closures, which you see on some later 19th century "health corsets". If you Google Victorian health corsets you should see examples of this style. Those ones are super convenient but I don't think you have as much control with them as you would with a busk and lacing. Though, I don't have a ton of experience with health corsets.
      That's super cool that it helped with your cramps! I have a similar thing, I don't notice my cramps until the corset comes off often 😂Perhaps this is our secret remedy to menstrual pain haha.

    • @SimpleDesertRose
      @SimpleDesertRose 2 года назад +4

      @@VBirchwood thanks for answering those two questions so quickly. I think we will start with jumps and stays until her body is fully developed. Then after she gets a feel for them and chooses to continue we can look at corsetry more seriously. I will google the health corset for sure. I just want to have options aside from a busk and laces for opening. Just for more mobility for bending over. That way I can stay bent over longer for digging in the garden and all. Not so worried about being able to sit and milk goats when we get them or do school with my kids. Its more the manual labor that comes from the gardening than anything.
      Before I had kids my menstrual cramps used to be incapacitating. I would spend 2 days a month curled up in a little ball wanting to die. I tried lots of different home remedies for them, none worked. It was actually having kids that helped me be able to function, even if just barely. I wish I had known about corsetry back then, it would have made my life so much easier. I'm totally going to start wearing one when ever that time of the month comes around from now on. I hate not being able to function.

    • @VBirchwood
      @VBirchwood  2 года назад +2

      @@SimpleDesertRose yes jumps are a super nice in between option because they’re so soft and don’t create much shape, so they’re more just like a vest or little waistcoat 😊
      I definitely understand that. I do a lot of gardening in a corded work corset actually. They’re far more flexible but they still offer some support. I would perhaps recommend that, and some of them open and close just with back laces and a hook and eye closure on the front. They’re gently stiffened, but nothing like a fully boned corset.
      Awww I’m so sorry to hear that! Well I’m glad this is now and option for you to use. I can understand why you hate not being able to function. It’s a very disempowering feeling sometimes!

    Bought 3 styles from voellers and they stopped working during the covid virus, they sold the company and despite me having fully paid for the corsets they charged me again to finish them. The question about comfortably lounging, I wanted to ask the same thing but be more detailed. When I lounge comfortably it involves basically slouching into a round squishy lazy lump in a chair. How would one go about comfortably lounging in that fashion while wearing a corset? I realize most people only do this at the end of the day prior to going to bed, however there are some days where there's absolutely nowhere to go and nothing to do, but you don't want to take off your corset just in case something comes up. Just in case you get invited somewhere last second. So you want to comfortably lounge as a lazy lump, while still dressed to go out at a moment's notice? This may be TMI, and I apologize if it is, but I was just hoping that there was a way to possibly lazy American lounge, well dressed to the nines.

    • @VBirchwood
      @VBirchwood  2 года назад +6

      Oh no don't worry, this isn't too personal 😊 You can't exactly get into a super lazy lump as you describe, but your body will relax the same. As in, physically you might not be slouchy, but your body is still resting and it is possible to be comfortable. Also jumps are great for this too, or even a corded corset, as you can still wear them out and they do provide support, but they are even easier to lounge around in. Hopefully this makes sense! haha

    I also love wearing my corsets while I'm sewing. I wear them all day too. I always had a bad slouching/hunching habit, but the corset prevents this now. Since I'm a man, wearing a corset didn't occur to me initially. I'm glad to have learned that men did historically wear them too. I've always been fascinated by corsets & other underpinnings since I was a kid. My first one was an impulse buy after I measured myself & learned I have a long torso. I got lucky since it's a mass produced corset, but I get a perfect parallel fit from it(despite it being made for women).
    I also find that I often forget I'm in a corset. Found it was intuitive to adapt to and figure out how to lace & unlace. No breathing issues. It does feel like a soothing hug imo. I also feel more confident & sexy lol.

    • @VBirchwood
      @VBirchwood  2 года назад +6

      If it's custom fit and well made to your exact measurements, it won't ride up and it'll stay in place. When I wore more ill-fitting corsets early on before I started getting them made extremely bespoke by my current corsetmaker, I dealt with things like the corset riding up as well, or at least cutting into my armpits, but that all went away once I started getting every single measurement custom, not just the main ones. It could be a centre back length measurement error as well, as that can cause a lot of discomfort if you are shorter or longer waisted than what is considered "standard" for patterns.

      @VBirchwood  2 года назад

      Hi! This will depend greatly on your body, the corset type, and also how it’s made by the corsetiere. My corsetiere asked me how much reduction to aim for, and did so for the pattern. I only wanted one or two inches reduction, and because I don’t squish much, the corset actually tends to even add bulk to my waist. I’d say that if your goal isn’t to tight lace then a couple of inches is generally a good balance, but also if the corset fits well, it shouldn’t be uncomfortable regardless of the reduction.

But if you lived in the times they always wore it you would start when you were still a child and lacing down even more wouldn't feel as tight. Imagine growing bigger inside the corset. But the bodies we have are shaped this way for a reason, we need squishy bellies to belly breathe.

    I want to know, and see really, what the frames are like on those wide upside down umbrella like dresses. I like 20min from Gettysburg, and I see them puffed out dresses on reenactments a lot! And I'm always wanting to go look under one girls dress to see it! I don't care if she's old and gross, young and hot! I just want to see what it's made of, how it's made, how it's worn. I'm sure I can see online, but with some many around me, I wanna see how they work in real life and be explained. I see my wife nude, and she knows my curiosity is deep on these dresses, but she doesn't know either.
    You don't have to reveal anything. Just put on some yoga pants and then one of them wide dresses, and show us how they work! 🙏

    People usually criticize because it was obligatory to wear a corset as it is in some countries today obligatory to wear scarf/hijab or niqab . The perfect thing with our society is that someone can dress as she or he wants . I bet you couldn't dress out of time period in Victorian times as you do today without being completely ostracized from society. Some like corsets and some not same with headscarves and numerous other things some find them entirely uncomfortable that s connected to the individual person and biology and everyone finds different things restrictive or uncomfortable or the opposite the important thing is to have the freedom to choose.

    • @VBirchwood
      @VBirchwood  2 года назад +5

      Yeah I agree, it’s a true blessing to have the freedom to choose. There were other options though historically as well, and Western women often still chose the corset. For example, they could have worn jumps more. And yet some chose to wear the corset. The Victorian period though was still very restrictive in so many regards. But absolutely, the corset isn’t for everyone, and it’s wonderful we are able to decide what we want to do with our bodies and how we want to dress. I would never ever want to live in a historical time period for that exact reasons (and many others) 😂

      @@VBirchwood well women who wore tea gowns loose gowns bloomers etc on the street were ridiculed , someone could hardly find employment with no proper clothes , in many cases they were considered immoral and loose ethics women etc so if someone had a few money tried to be dressed as fashion dictated . We see women in brick making manufacturing dressed in jeans but that was in the job and this was a very low paid job and such workers were scorned in that society , in fact few were the freedoms back then even less than before the industrial revolution. Some women yes choose them and they like them as you do but anyway they would be scorned if they did otherwise and many chose them because of social pressure.

      Oh yeah absolutely! I’m definitely not defending the standards placed upon women in Victorian society. I truly believe in an individual’s right to choose and I don’t particularly like dogmatic systems, so women indeed put up with a lot, and in many places still do today.

    Part of me wants a corset, but I can’t even wear underwire bras, I can’t stand them! They are so painful! But I have very severe abdominal muscle diastasis from having my daughter, meaning my muscles were ripped apart while my baby grew during pregnancy and they now refuse to grow back together again. I quite literally am stuck looking pregnant forever (she is 6) unless I have reparative surgery, despite being the same weight as before I had her. So it would be nice to have my belly squished into a normal figure while dressed.

    The corset covers the top of your pants, and you can’t pull them down and pull them up while the corset is on - correct?..
    So how can you go to the toilet then - especially in public places???😮
    Do you wear split pants like Victorian ladies? Or no pants at all?..😊

    • @VBirchwood
      @VBirchwood  Год назад +2

      Women with all breast sizes have existed and worn corsets all throughout history. There are a number of people in the historical fashion community as well who wear corsets and have larger busts. You’ll often find people discussing this topic in my comments section on corset videos too, as many larger busted individuals will share their experiences of how much corsetry has helped them. In fact, I think larger busted individuals probably benefit more because the weight gets distributed between different points along the back and torso, rather than how it is with a bra where it’s just a few straps. I can’t speak from experience but this is what I’ve seen to be regularly said in the comments 😊

    Regarding driving or riding in a car while corseted, it's extremely dangerous to wear a boned corset. If you are in even a minor accident, the boning can break and puncture your body. Depending on where that happens, you run the risk of puncturing vital organs, and therefore, it isn't recommended.
