    Excellent performance, very refined. The orchestra didn’t sound like students, very professional. Soloist was flawless. Bravo!

    Nicola Benedetti and the NYO under Mark Wigglesworth deliver a performance of this fabulous concerto that blends rigorous control and attention to the finest of details with seemingly unbridled spontaneity and sheer enjoyment. A clear sign of meticulous rehearsing and genuine passion.
    Thank you all for an unforgettable evening.
    Viewers: If you turn off the sound from 35:00 to 37:55 you'll spare yourselves the inane drivel spouted by the two radio presenters.

    Most of this is amazing! When I first saw it on TV live I didn’t think it was great, about a month later I saw her play it live and it was truly outstanding. I think it was way too fast, and I don’t think that was Nicola’s fault, as when I saw it live it was slower. The orchestra was amazing but overall it was conducted far too fast,. Not one of Nicola’s best, but it was still incredibly characterful and bright!

    The soloist was undermiked on the BBC broadcast, in my opinion . I would imagine that the sound here on utube is from the same mix but it doesn't seem quite as bad as the live broadcast.

    The sound of the video is low, but still enjoyable. The tempo a bit too fast for my taste. Benedetti wonderful, as ever. And the orchestra, boy, they're so young xddd but they sound fabulous.

      Couldn't agree more. It's not about being a Beckmesser and finding fault with every little thing, rather why do performers (not just her, Yuja Wang, among pianists) take such insanely fast tempi - faster than what the music will actually support, and, in this case, faster than the solist can play them? The 3rd movemnt is an absolute mess, which is a shame, because I'm sure this artist could play it better.

    I miss more agresivity in some violin solo phrases and in the FF of 1st mov theme of full orchestra less fast

  • @fingerhorn4
    @fingerhorn4 4 года назад +6

    Miles too fast for the soloist and orchestra, who cannot handle the faster development section of the 1st movement, let alone the final movement which is a blurred disaster of manic overspeed. It doesn't make the music more exciting. It just makes everything sound like a complete mess. The NYO strings sound fundamentally very good, as do the brass, but they lose rhythmic control when directed to play at ridiculous speeds. It's not their fault. It is the conductor. Nicola would also benefit from a much slower pace. She is rushing, seemingly out of desperate panic, smudging and glossing over many difficult phrases because again it is too damn fast. Mark Wigglesworth is very poor in this performance. He fails to reign in runaway speed.
    Having said all that I think that Nicola is a lovely person and a very good teacher.

      @@lesleyvivien2876 And you are easily satisfied !! I am used to listening to both live and video performances of far higher quality performances of many amazing violin concertos including this one by Tchaikovsky. To mention just one case of comparison, I have been on separate occasions to live performances of the virtuoso violinist Sarah Chang and Nicola Benedetti playing the Bruch Violin Concerto, Sarah Chang far more powerful performer and expressive violinist, just different class. As a few others have mentioned, she may have had problems with her microphone in this performance.

      SHe is ok, but nowhere near the very best violinist who I have watched both in live performances and on RUclips. Even when only 12 years old, the young Sarah Chang was far better and a lot more powerful and expressive violinist. She of course became on of the very best violinists in the world, Nicola Benedetti is not at the same level as Sarah and many others I could mention. As a few others have mentioned, she may have had problems with her microphone in this performance.
