No exercise migraine or other migraines! Female, age 47, 137 lbs, 5’10, 20 minutes is all I can handle in the sauna before feeling lightheaded.
My 26 yr. old daughter is the same way. A couple of days ago a friend invited her to do a one hour hot yoga class. She was worried about faceplanting because she doesn't tolerate heat well. I told her to take a half teaspoon of potassium bicarbonate before class, and to her very happy surprise she survived the entire class with no problems which is a first.

I'm 75- Started using the sauna about 4-5 months ago after hearing Dr Ronda Patrick's "10 benefits of a sauna".. Best decision ever for many reasons. I have pretty good heat tolerance and started out at 25 mins (abt 170 degrees) and now stay in for 30 minutes 5 days a week. To your point about endurance--My cardio includes the "ropes". When I first started I could do, maybe 50-75 reps before my heart rate was -- Whoop reading of 160-165 bpm and recovery (catch my breath) was maybe 3-5 minutes. This morning I did 1 set of 225 and 2 sets of 125 with a max of 137 bpm (I'm not sure what the best-sustained heart rate is for my age but should probably push it a bit). Also my heart rate recovers to about 105 in less than a minute. I am interested in losing more weight and am interested in what you said about growth hormones. I wonder if growth hormones are as available at my age.. Our LA Fitness membership is free (benefit to being old).

Seriously. I always heard the way to go was infrared. I’m hoping I didn’t waste $4100 on the sauna I just bought! I’m sure there’s tremendous benefits in both though!
Infrared saunas are not legitimate saunas, any Finn will tell you that. Not sure the huge push for them here in the USA, it’s just lights that heat you up to a warm temp. We are talking 130F infrared sauna vs 210F plus 30-50% humidity in a traditional dry/wet finish sauna. I read that infrared saunas were first created by NASA so astronauts could experience elevated cardiovascular heart rates similar to a workout while being in antigravity. When you are talking about the legitimate health benefits and release of endorphins and HSPs that only comes from the intense heat of a dry/wet sauna and not those fake cookie cutter infrared toy boxes.
If you dont have access to a sauna, you can run a bath as hot as your body can handle and rest in that. It is a humid heat as opposed to dry heat sauna, but still has many of the benefits.
This week I got a Relax “professional” model. I got to use it for the first time yesterday. I can’t wait to get back home so that I can use it again. It’s going to be a nearly daily thing for me to use.
Hi, tanks a lot. The one thing that is always lost about sauna - its social. Instead of a double feature movie - spend the time, relax, talk to people, read a book.... Its not like going for dinner with you friends - in the sauna everybody is relaxed after being in the heat - maybe just wainting for the next session of heat. You really have time to talk to people - and afterwards you are calm, happy amd probably tired. When you use a sauna 4 times a night - does that count as the "4" or as going once? Have a great day, Best wishes from the south of Germany
Thanks thomas! I go to the sauna in my neighbourhood twice a week! It has everything; steam sauna, hot sauna, mild sauna, cold bath etc. My approach is a contrast bathing approach. There are sandtimers(english term?) Which last around 20 minutes I think. Today was my first time staying in the hottest sauna for a whole round, whoohoo!

Very nice!! How do you think saunas compare to clothing that mimic the effect? I also do Wim Hof Breathing so I’ve been more inclined in embracing the cold especially with cold showers. Is it possible to do both? If so would you try sauna first shower second or vice versa?
I’d think cold before would be much better. Seeing as how the benefit of sauna is in heating the core body temperature, whereas a cold shower afterward may diminish that effect.
Before watching the video, here are some that I HAVE heard about: 1- lower all-cause mortality, 2- increased HGH, 3- getting rid of Cadmium (and similar heavy metals) via sweating 4- heat shock proteins. Would love to learn more!
I love saunas. Have one at home. But ur study with Finnish participants. Finland is cold and dark a large portion of the year. In anyevent saunas great
Renaissance Periodization which I think is Dr. Mike Isratel's channel and Thomas DeLauer are right now my two favorite fitness and health youtube channels. These guys will answer pretty much all your health questions with Science and experience. I love these two channels and these two geniuses.
The EPO thing, as far as I know, is only a suggested explanation at the moment and no studies have found it to be conclusive. Plasma volume goes up first, then red blood cells increase after about 3 weeks (not always) as some sort of compensatory effect, but it is not known how/why.
I built a traditional finnish sauna in my home and get in it almost daily. I heat up till I can't stand it anymore, then cool down repeating this three times before calling it quits for that session. One thing I noticed after a few weeks was that the hair on my legs started growing thicker.
U know why thats so funny? I'm a natural haired black woman.......we do a thing that's called "greenhouse method" where you put a bag over your head with natural oils and keep it on overnight or all day if you want.........IT GROWS OUR HAIR VERY FAST from the heat thats trapped in from our body....this makes total sense.....its like your greenhousing your legs lol
@@rebel8440 Wow, that's amazing. I've had the sauna for awhile but never noticed the thicker hair until recently when I started putting much more water on those hot rocks to create more steam. I used to get into it dry but took forever to start sweating. So I started throwing water on the rocks right away and much more so this must be EXACTLY what's happening with the "greenhouse method"! My wife says the hair on my head is even looking healthier lately so the hot steam has everything to do with this apparently.
Thanks SO very much for this wonderful knowledge!! Use to sauna & infrared SAUNA EXPERIENCES were wonderful years ago!!! Have to have good hearted friends whom can afford the device. 😅😅❤❤❤ Dry heat sauna is best for what ?
I turned my mud room into a hillbilly sauna with a couple radiant propane heaters and a bunch of IR red lights for chicken warmers. I do it twice a day most days and refuse to live without it now
the chicken lights are ok but they are near infrared. you can buy cheap 100W medical use Philips IR bulbs easily which emit medium range infrared and that has more health benefits than chicken IR.
How dose sauna compare with steam room use? I have a steam sauna in my master bath I have setup and enjoy using it along with cold showers. Another question, have you ever looked into the effects of exposure to cold and the breathing technics used in Wim Hoff method of building up immune system and cold tolerance?
Where I live I'm in a sauna several times a day every day🤣🤣. Especially in the summer where temps reach 115 degrees 🥵🔥 outside for four straight months. I guess I'll just spend more time outdoors in the sun since it's not about the sweating although in those temps that's not hard either🥵🤣

My heat healer blanket is incredible I did so much research and found this one with crystals and zero EMF!! Feel so good!
You mentioned your weight loss was significant! and you now experience periodic pain, would love to hear more about this!
Even more Sauna vids please! 😁
America or the United States doesn't talk nearly enough about the benefits of saunas. It's really infuriating! Thank you for bringing more awareness.
This video was so helpful.
Thank you.
Very good info!!! Lots of details 👏🏻
Thanks 🙏 Thomas as always helpful - thoughts on sauna before or after exercise regime?
My wifes nickname is Sauna she gives me all the stress I need .
She must be 🔥
😂😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lmao
Ha... Hahahahah
Sauna is life! I do sauna sessions daily almost. Once completely sweaty, jump in a cold shower then repeat... perfection
It’s a secret of the pros. I’ve been preaching it on the rooftops for years lol
Same!
@@nicolenicole9928 pool not so much, to many chemicals but to each their own
I got the delivery from yesterday! thanks for making it possible thomas!!!!
Wow that was fantastic info. Thanks for breaking it down.
Awesome video and thank you for the acknowledgment
I was searching benefits of Sauna. And I found this awesome informative video. I started Sauna in my local Gym 5 days ago and guess what I am addicted now. I noticed the following benefits started from day 3
Good sleep
No more tired after wake up in the morning
Less Stress
Feeling awesome positive
Mood stays happy
Face shining fresh fresh
Thanks a lot I know some coworkers go into the Sauna and they said they feel great after a workout gonna try it.
Yes...me 2 on Thursday
How many of these benefits apply to infrared, dry, or traditional sauna?
good sir it's an amazing explanation.
I would recommend to try Eastern European sauna called ,,Bania'' it's with tree branches with leafs on it..the best sauna I've ever done
As Always!!! You've given an Answer, to a Question I was Trying to Formulate without knowing the right Words, yet!!!!👍👍👍👍
Enough that I've Downloaded THIS One!!! So I Don't Forget!!!!
I like the before and after picture you showed at the end of video. But sir, I think you look good either way. You probably feel much better, and I'm glad you are living your dream.
Before watching the video, here are some that I HAVE heard about:
1- lower all-cause mortality,
2- increased HGH,
3- getting rid of Cadmium (and similar heavy metals) via sweating
4- heat shock proteins.
Would love to learn more!
Really excellent scientific explanations! Just what I needed to understand why I do what I do! Thank you.
I love saunas. Have one at home. But ur study with Finnish participants. Finland is cold and dark a large portion of the year. In anyevent saunas great
Like how it helps remove free radicals after a workout.
Thank you for the Sauna video.
Every time I see one of your videos, I wonder if you are a living encyclopedia.... with all those terms and scientific names.... so knowledgeable 🧐
Yes he very detailed and knowledgeable. I love that
Renaissance Periodization which I think is Dr. Mike Isratel's channel and
Thomas DeLauer are right now my two favorite fitness and health youtube channels.
These guys will answer pretty much all your health questions with Science and experience.
I love these two channels and these two geniuses.
Which is better steam sauna or dry sauna?
Thomas you look rough, hope you're alright bro. Appreciate your info, as always!
Thank you, Thomas. I love saunas. How much sauna is TOO much sauna?
The EPO thing, as far as I know, is only a suggested explanation at the moment and no studies have found it to be conclusive. Plasma volume goes up first, then red blood cells increase after about 3 weeks (not always) as some sort of compensatory effect, but it is not known how/why.
thank you for sharing your knowledge and info in the video! the talking is a little too fast and I'm one that loves a fast talker!
Good info
This was refreshing to hear
@@rebel8440 Wow, that's amazing. I've had the sauna for awhile but never noticed the thicker hair until recently when I started putting much more water on those hot rocks to create more steam. I used to get into it dry but took forever to start sweating. So I started throwing water on the rocks right away and much more so this must be EXACTLY what's happening with the "greenhouse method"!
My wife says the hair on my head is even looking healthier lately so the hot steam has everything to do with this apparently.
@@DanScottChannel yup ....you got it....steam stimulates hair follicles......look up the greenhouse method....that is exactly it.....promotes extreme hair growth
@@DanScottChannel i will be going into a suana for the first time today
Is there a difference in health benefits of a dry sauna vas a wet sauna?
Curious about that too but I'd assume that the stress( regardless of source) would produce those results
What about wearing fat winter clothing indoors?
Or using fire
@@stillafool Would chemicals in the water such as chlorine, etc., being breathed in through the steam be a problem?
@@bac0129 I've put eucalyptus oil is the water but it's just for the smell, like "aromatherapy"
Thanks SO very much for this wonderful knowledge!! Use to sauna & infrared SAUNA EXPERIENCES were wonderful years ago!!!
Have to have good hearted friends whom can afford the device. 😅😅❤❤❤
Dry heat sauna is best for what ?
I turned my mud room into a hillbilly sauna with a couple radiant propane heaters and a bunch of IR red lights for chicken warmers. I do it twice a day most days and refuse to live without it now
becareful. dont become barbeque lol
the chicken lights are ok but they are near infrared. you can buy cheap 100W medical use Philips IR bulbs easily which emit medium range infrared and that has more health benefits than chicken IR.
great valuable super informative....thanks
Thanks for sharing, and love doing sauna every couple of weeks.
Before Corona-Virus I went everyday for months in a row : heaven on earth.
Excellent insights!
How dose sauna compare with steam room use? I have a steam sauna in my master bath I have setup and enjoy using it along with cold showers. Another question, have you ever looked into the effects of exposure to cold and the breathing technics used in Wim Hoff method of building up immune system and cold tolerance?
Who cares? Cold and ice water has it's own benefits. Sauna and ice water contrast has double benefits. Obvious facts
I love Sauna 🧖♀️ before and after work out fell so good ❤
I purchased that tea because of your channel 💛
Where I live I'm in a sauna several times a day every day🤣🤣. Especially in the summer where temps reach 115 degrees 🥵🔥 outside for four straight months. I guess I'll just spend more time outdoors in the sun since it's not about the sweating although in those temps that's not hard either🥵🤣
So it’s similar to my ice bath… training my mind overcome the hard- breathing is everything!
Saunas are very big in Japan 🇯🇵 as much as onsen ♨️. That’s why I love it here.
