  • Dr. Amrita Kapoor from Synergy Eye Care explains about Convergence Insufficiency, it’s symptoms and Treatment.
Convergence Insufficiency is the inability to keep the two eyes working together while working at a near distance. One of the eyes may turn outward when focusing on an object at near.
The symptoms of convergence insufficiency can be double vision, blurred vision, headaches, eyestrain, trouble concentrating on what one is reading, squinting, while reading, general debility, psychological instability, overwork, and worry may be the precipitating factors for convergence insufficiency.
So, convergence insufficiency is caused by an imbalance of convergent eye movements, i.e. either inborn deficiency or acquired. It is most common in the young adult population, seen more commonly in children with increased school work, prolonged periods of reading.
The treatment for this insufficiency includes proper refraction, orthoptic treatment, prism therapy and even surgery. Pencil push up exercises, convergence card exercises, and office-based exercises using the Synoptophore can also help in this condition.
