Still one of the best hip hop groups of all time. Their music is easily one of the easiest to go back and listen to and still enjoy maybe even more. They should've been a lot bigger.

Stakes Is High brings bittersweet memories for me. When it came out initially I didn't notice because by 94/94 I had graduated from college, working two jobs, dealing with life, family, relationship drama, landlords, bosses- I had less time for hip hop. When I finally got to hear it almost two years later, I felt like crying. Like seeing long lost friends. But Hip hop was changing during this time and I didn't like it (Flashy Diddy Era..ugh) this album reminded me of the things i used to love about Hip Hop, and why I hated to new direction the art form was going.

As we all get older we’ll have to come to terms with the fact that a lot of the rappers we love are going to be under appreciated and forgotten. Nas has had a helluva run in the last few years and that’s super rare. I think Tribe was a slightly bigger name than De La but there’s a lot of people that have no idea who they were. There are people profiting off Hip Hop that has no idea who Kool Herc is!! There’s some youngster coming up that never heard The Chronic or It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back and they’re fine with it. That’s just the reality of the Hip Hop Universe. The people that love De La Soul know what’s up and that’s all that should matter.

Bro, please do your research, you can find a video here on RUclips of Kool Yerc saying he didn’t create hip hop, and that black Americans were already doing it well before he ever came to America. He was just the first DJ in Jamaica to play hip hop at one of their parties. Rappers delight came out I believe in 1972, but hip hop/rap was a thing, even being mimicked by American soul singers in the 60s & 70s. Give credit where credit is due, hip hop was created and is black American music, started in the south as one of the many musical art forms to describe our life and struggles.

Look at the screen on 7:56 mark!! '93-'95 were such an explosive Golden Age for hip hop, i remember walking into a record store and being too confused to buy anything because so many damn dope artists and groups on the shelves!! Everything was hot! Everybody had thier own unique sound, look and spin!! Wow......we took that era for granted.

You really missed the whole Tommy Boy Records saga, huh?
The label never took advantage to digitize their back catalog until a few years ago when label founder, Tom Silverman got it back. Under the terms of their original contract, which never accounted for future format changes, they would have had to split only 10 % of the profit. They finally succeeded last year and set forth to release their Tommy Boy catalog, March, 2023. Unfortunately, Dave (Trugoy) passed away. And trust me, it was more than Spotify that it was released to and they definitely charted on Billboard from sales of 3ft High and Rising, 35 years after its original release

Stunt# 2 was absolutely fact. I didn't fully realize it was until it was shown how many albums came out those two years. The competition was heavy in that era. A lot of guys got lost in sauce. Not because they were wack. It's because there was so much good music and so little funds to spend it on, you had to cop only a few a year. You had to be really, really good back then or you weren't getting attention from hip hop heads. I miss that era for real

Legendary group! I believe another reason their growth was stunted was their long term battle with Tommy Boy records.
I believe they missed capturing a new generation of fans because their music wasn’t available for the first decade of streaming. And before that their music wasn’t even on iTunes.
The Cole, K Dot and other similar artists fan base could have been exposed to their music earlier on during peak streaming era.
I’m just recognizing their greatness. Would have loved to have access to their music during my college days.
