  • De La Soul’s debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising is a landmark album for multiple reasons. But one of the elements that is so groundbreaking is also the thing that nearly erased De La Soul from music history entirely.

Great piece! I am Al Watts, the engineer, mixer and "Game Show Host" for 3 Feet High and Rising. I knew we were making a great album back in 1989, however, we never could dream it would become this important. Thank you for sharing the love!

I would say I lived much of Hip Hop "history" I am 57 from New York.
I was at a the Block Party on Fairview Av Hempstead NY were the Disco Twins Rocked the Place.
I saw Grandmaster Flash at the Roxy.
The Treacherous Three at St James Park in the Bronx.
I was at Baisley Park when Mr Magic and the Juice Crew Rocked the House.
I went to the FRIST Hip Hop awards at the skating rink in Roosevelt, LI that was about 1980 or 81..
I started Spinning in 1977 and was down with Universal Sounds Crew.
Use to listen to the first Hip Hop radio show on Tuesday and Thursday nite from 2 to 4 with Mr Magic WHBI.
I rode the Subways that were tagged by Bombing Crews and always had a Fat Pilot Marker in my pocket.
My boy was an Artist and Bomb All City with TPA.

The 3 feet high album is such a part of my teen years, that I can't imagine not having heard these great jams. They are iconic in their own right, then mixed with the native tongue teams have shaped my musical tastes and thought process about "not being cool because you're different". Another Super Terrific video and one that is Perfectly timed with their music openly getting back out into the world today!!!🙌🏼🎉👍🏼
The very first concert I saw in LA once I moved there from NC in the fall of 1996 was the Goodie Mob, De La Soul, and Fishbone at the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip. Was an utterly unbelievable show that was FANTASTIC!! That show has always remained one of my personal most important and very favorite concerts of my life for a myriad of reasons. In turn, having made a career in music, I eventually saw De La multiple times having either shared concert bills with them or by watching my homies the Rhythm Roots All-Stars back then live years later.
De La Soul is Absolutely one of the VERY BEST and MOST important groups in Hip-Hop, as well as all, music history (as you terrifically explained here in this video)!!!

Alas, you missed the one last tragedy: Even after they’d cleared so many hurdles to get their catalog online, they *still* couldn’t clear all the samples. This is noticeable throughout their run, but is downright severe in some places; for instance, Cool Breeze on the Rocks is completely gone, with nothing but the sound of a rewinding tape in its place. It’s a grim irony that the generation being introduced to this music for the first time *still* can’t hear it in its true form. Everyone who’s just now getting into De La, I highly suggest seeking out their original pressings, in whatever format you can. They’ll blow your mind.

Great vid on this topic, I appreciate it. I actually heard 3 feet for the first time today and could tell it was groundbreaking at first listen. Folks in the hip hop community have been touting the re-release of De La's discography for a bit of time now, and I'm glad I heeded their recommendation. I'll continue to listen, as I know there will be more goodness from them I haven't experienced yet. Thanks again for the vid. ✌🏾

Excellent presentation on one of my favorite groups in hip hop. 3 Feet High And Rising meant the world to me as a teen, and still has a special place in my heart as a 40+ adult. De La was ahead of their time, and brought a different energy to hip hop. Appreciate your channel and all of your incredible content. Rest In Power Dave! #DeLaSoul4Ever

I am SO fucking pumped they're on streaming finally. I've been ranting at all of my friends for years (the ones that didn't know about De La at least) about how this hugely influential piece of music history was just absent for most modern listeners. I know you could find stuff if you looked for it on RUclips and the like, but it wasn't there to be stumbled upon like with streaming.
And I can't even imagine how the rest of the group and people in their circle must feel with them arriving on streaming right after Dave's passing. He hopefully was at least aware that they'd finally be given back to the world.
Besides the fact that they were together for so long, one of the most remarkable things about them was their growth as artists and men. I had a big long rant typed out but I'll spare everyone. Thanks for the work you're doing!

I was waiting for this since I was 18 when I discovered them and have had to RUclips their albums except 2 and 3 which I had on CD for over 5 years now. I wish the new versions kept all the samples in the songs, and the mixing feels weird now, but those are minor complaints, I’m just happy we can all listen to them easily now and their legacy won’t be lost. Rip Dove and thank you for the inspiration and influence you gave so many of us.

from the recent NY Times article on the reissues:
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Still, not everything could be cleared, or was worth the money to do so. The band rerecorded what it says are tiny elements - drumbeats, horn hits, vinyl scratches - and went back to some of the original analog equipment it used more than 30 years ago...
One track on “3 Feet High” called “Cool Breeze On The Rocks” - a pastiche of more than 20 fragments in less than a minute by Public Enemy, Jefferson Starship, Afrika Bambaataa and others using the word “rock” - was too impractical to clear, so it has been “reimagined". Close listeners may notice other changes like the disappearance of an Eddie Murphy snippet from “The Magic Number.”

Absolutely one of the best! Been a fan since 3 Feet High and Rising first dropped. Excellent historical context about De La being a total counterpoint to NWA and what was happening on the West Coast. There’s no better 2nd or 3rd album in an hip-hop artists discography than theirs. De La Soul is Dead is like the Empire Strikes Back to Star Wars. A bit darker and way more mature. If you haven’t listened to those first three albums, do yourself a favor and do so! I had the honor of seeing them live and they did give the stink eye to Me Myself and I. I did read an article that the new rerelease of 3 Feet is different from the original due to some lingering samples that could not be cleared. So if you ever come across an old pressing of the CD nab it! R.I.P Trugouy! Love your channel keep up the great work!

My abuse only lasted a couple years, but these 3 beautiful souls kept me from drowning. If A Tribe Called Quest's A Low End Theory is the Sgt. I’ve been so mad, especially lately, that there’s literally no De La Soul on any music services. And honestly, I don’t even use streaming, but i recently got Apple Music for free. I use physical media, original versions at that, almost exclusively, but even that’s nearly impossible for their albums as you already touched on. I was lucky enough to score a copy of De La Soul Is Dead for $12 right before Trugoy passed, still sealed from 1991, but thats been it. When I had my 3-4 hours of free time at work to listen to some music today, I saw that it finally happened: 3 Feet High, as well as the others, had finally made it!! And at the perfect time, too.
Thank you for making this video and spreading awareness of the real hip hop. We need more of this.

Hip Hop was generally a singles genre up until this album. The skits on 3 Feet gave it continuity and it felt like a concept album. Glad the 6 albums are available again.
